There has been a lot of speculation written in the popular pres this week concerning Pablo Aimar.

Pablo Aimar - on his way to Newcastle?
We issued a report on Pablo very early yesterday morning, saying that Newcastle were back in for Pablo, and that was after his agent had said he was about to sign for Benfica.
However, all the papers yesterday seemed to cite the agent’s comments he had in fact made earlier on Sunday, and said that Newcastle’s latest pursuit must therefore have failed.
But again the latest Newcastle approach was made after his agent Gustavo Mascardi told the Portuguese newspaper Record on Sunday:
“I’m awaiting at the moment a phone call from (Zaragoza owner) Agapito Iglesias telling me that Benfica’s money has arrived.â€
“As things stand, Aimar will be a player at the Portugese club.â€
And today, his agent, Gustavo Mascardi has spoken to Portugese newspaper O Jogo, and said:
“We have begun to speak to an English club - not Everton - and already we have offers for the club and player.”
We think that club is Newcastle United, and the club may just have put themselves into prime position for the player.
It certainly will not hurt, that new Argentine signing Jonas Gutierrez began training yesterday at Newcastle, and that we are today linked with 19 year-old Argentine full-back Emiliano Insua, from Liverpool.
We believe Newcastle United have made an offer for Aimar, and his agent is confirming it is a Premier club and not Everton, that have indeed made the offer.
Everton were the other club, along with Portsmouth, who were also interested in the player, but we believe Portsmouth have been put off by the £7M fee.
The agent of course is refusing to say which club the offer is from, but indications out of the Portuguese press today are that it is indeed Newcastle United.
Twenty-eight-year-old Aimar was expected to complete a move to Benfica this week, but we believe Newcastle made their move on Sunday evening, and they are trying to get the player tied up quickly.
Real Zaragoza president Eduardo Bandres said:
“There are offers from Portugal, England and Greece.“
“We won’t sell Aimar for anything less than favorable terms.”
Real Zaragoza president Eduardo Bandres is also insisting that no deal has been agreed with Benfica for Pablo Aimar.
It’s our belief that Newcastle are trying to get the deal sealed for Aimar right now, and while we could certainly be wrong about this, the events of the last 3 days are very consistent with that.
We certainly hope so.
Comments welcome.

there is nothing to suggest it is indeed newcastle in talks with aimar.
it simply says, “it is not evertonâ€. this means it could be anyone besides everton. like portsmouth for instance.

Cheers Ed - Even if it is just the same facts over and over again, people want to talk about this deal and it’s spilling over into other threads - Keep us updated please!
As for the deal itself - I’ve said a couple of time - IF we get him, I hope it’s on a pay-for-play commission style deal like Owen has apparently been offered…Makes perfect sense for the club and it would be a good gesture by Aimar implying that he ISN’T just here for one last pay-cheque and he does genuinely want to get his career going again!
13 toonarmy08 // Jul 15, 2008 at 15:03
i think we are the club in for him ,as his agent hasnt said who the club is ,and lets not forget our new transfer policy is to keep all negotiations hush hush until we have actually signed the player .Great player imo ,seen him many times ,hope we get him before nxt week as im off to the donny friendly !!be good to see him in toon shirt!

Unlike Redknapp, KK says NOTHING about the players we are interested in, however, i hope they are right about this one. Im confident KK can get this lads form back.
Theres one Argintinian at the club already with another about to come on loan, if we get Aimar he will settle quicker and it will give them all a lift streight away.
Sign this lad up

toonarmy08. you could argue that our new transfer policy doesnt include ageing hollywood signings such as pablo aimar?
19 Davies // Jul 15, 2008 at 15:05
Either sign him, or don’t sign him, just get it over and done with.
Is it just me, or does the transfer window get more farcical every year.
I used to want football back because I don’t like to be without it. Now I tend to want it back because I get sick of all the speculation and “hijacking”.
Not sure about Aimar anymore. Past his best but still talented some say. Others insist that Keegan can get the best out of him.

42 Geordie Nick // Jul 15, 2008 at 15:20
dont know why everyone assumes tht because we have a new youth policy tht means EVERY single player we sign has to be young, our youth policy is in full swing with the players we’ve already signed and i think we’ll be looking for a few more experienced players to compliment them and aimar wud do exactly tht IMO and i cud certainly see KK being interested in aimar, i reckon we’ll sign him

As i’ve said on previous threads I’ve always been a fan of the player, but hope and think he won’t be coming to the toon any time soon.
I feel his too old, too expensive (both transfer fee and wages!) for what were looking for at the moment and has also not played alot later an been out of form when he has.
just can’t see him shining at newcastle next year, can only see him being another super star that lets us down.

DAVIES, we don’t know if it’s the club pflaffing about over Aimar or whether it’s just the press pflaffing about with stories and rumours. KK and the recruitment team might have been very decisive behind the scenes, one way or’t other, for all we know.
Uhmmmm…I’m thinking now about those 3 Liverpool players reportedly offered for Milner a few weeks ago. Of course we have now signed Guthrie but – though I like Milner – I might have been tempted to have taken L’pool’s offer at the time. Insua sounds very good and Hobbs is said to be a great prospect too.
There seem to be quite a few posts saying why go for a 19 year-old lb (if we do get Insua on loan) because of Kadar but Kadar is surely not our future lb. Tozer is, with Kadar cb.
Anyway, no harm in getting another loan player in either way.

i think our regimes gripe is paying a fortune for a player who we will only get a couple of years out of and cant get the money back if he flops, aimar maybe getting on , but he’s not commanding huge fee’s and wages . and if he flops we are not throwing 10’s of millions away ala luque

Spurs fans should not be welcomed by this site unless they have something genuine to contribute, not just pent-up aggravation from a few defeats to us!
By the way, you know the way Doctor Who gets re-generated and you see the face of the new doctor appearing over the previous one? Maybe they could that with footballers, so the official Toon site would show Emre collapse in a heap and, say, his face transforming into Aimar’s?! Well, maybe not but it might work with managers.
Errr…okay, it’s quiet at work this morning….

Hi Everyone, I’m a spurs supporter and I just want to tell you all that I am a closet Geordie, but I am also into Beastiality. But I really do love my little cocker spaniel, I want to marry her.
Anyway, back to football, we won the Carling cup and we’re amazing, so we’re now ranked with teams like Middlesbrough, Blackburn and lets not fofget Leicester too!!!
I hope Spurs can improve there record against Newcastle. I suppose it can’t get any worse. It’s funny how Newcastle have a London curse, but yet they always spank our ass’s! STRANGE!

Hope we get Pablo and with Keegan and his back room staff working with him i am sure they will get him firing on all cylinders pretty quickly.
I have got a gut feeling we will sign a fair few new faces over the coming weeks and I am alot happier than I have in a while.

undoubted quality and will show some of the other younger lads what can be done with a football. 5 yard passing is not the way forward, he may even allow a few to realise there potential! Geremi for example was regarded as having a very complete passing range prior to him signing for us.

from the wiki website : )
At 3:53pm on Tuesday 15th July 2008, Aimar was transferred to Newcastle United from Real Zaragoza for a fee of £7.6M. He will wear squad number 8.
Later that day, at 4.19pm he was sold to Sunderland, although the deal is resting on his nationality being changed to Irish. Although he has previously stated he will never play for a football team such as sunderland.
At 4.21pm, he was seen staggering out of Gotham Town, after a couple of pitchers of White Russian. It is believed he went to Subway for a 12 inch steak and cheese, with south west sauce. Though sky sports news have yet to confirm this.

159 Kash2 // Jul 15, 2008 at 16:52
@Robertsa: Rangers got to the UEFA cup final because they’re an excellent team overall. Walter Smith and Alex Ferguson are both similar in styles and thinking. Rangers defend and attack as a unit.
Lets put it bluntly, Cuellers distribution isn’t great. If we are to ever play possession football, then we need at elast 1 CB who can play football on the deck. Cueller can’t!

164 Kash2 // Jul 15, 2008 at 17:12
Lads, putting it simply, Manuel Rui Costa, one of the best playmakers to grace Serie A that Milan bought to replace Boban wanted Aimar to be the playmaker for Benfica.
If Rui thinks he’s good enough for Benfica, then I know he’s good enough for the mighty TOON!
165 jettson // Jul 15, 2008 at 17:15
would be a great signing if he can find the form of a few years ago, he was class, KK is the man to bring the best out of him, lets hope so. Defenders next must be a prioity, CB and LB (cover) Collocini anyone?????
Derdiyok as the CF then we are cooking with gas!!! howay the lads, lets make it back to where we belong!!
166 ObaFan2 // Jul 15, 2008 at 17:16
Agree Kash but there’s too much rumor about it, not like our other signings but we can blame the other club/player/agent for that i suppose.
167 steve // Jul 15, 2008 at 17:17
Too much money - you are joking aren’t ya
Think 7 millions cheap if KK can reinvigorate him - if we’re asking 3 million for Ameobi, 7’s about right - how much are inter paying for old man Lampard?
Although saying that we have no proof that toon have any interest - pure speculation and second guessing going on here.
168 Graham // Jul 15, 2008 at 17:19
Piers - how the hell is a supposed £7m bid too much for a 28 year old? Alex Ferguson has apparently bid £25-28m for a 27 year old Berbatov! Does this mean Berbatove will be worth £20m less this time next year??? Me thinks not!
Aimar has at least 5-6 years at the very top left in him. £7m for a decent player (albeit I dont know a great deal of him) is the going rate

171 Obafan // Jul 15, 2008 at 17:23
I’ve got a good feeling about the Aimar stories. I think we will get him from under the nose of Benfica. If we get him, then we need our defence to be stronger.
Insua: don’t know that guy, so I don’t judge him
Cuellar: good CB (maybe his footballing skilmls are not the best, but his positioning and his air strength are very good)
Colloccini: very good CB
Shorey: would be a good attacking LB
a new RB as back up for Beye
Then get Derdyiok and our squad looks strong again.
Given / Harper
Beye / ???
Taylor / Cacapa / Faye / Collocini / Cuellar / Edgar
Enrique / Insua or Shorey (prefer Shorey)
Geremi / Milner / Gutierrez
Butt / Guthrie / Barton
Aimar / N’Zogbia / Barton
Duff / Gutierrez / N’Zogbia
Owen / Martins / Viduka / Derdyiok / Smith / Carroll
Just try to sell Smith and Ameobi and we will get a good season next year. Then next summer to build further.
I also think a few youngsters can sit on the bench during this season;
Kadar
LuaLua
Carroll

Kash2 - Yea I’d rate him, but wouldn’t say he’s especially amazing. Tom_Toon seemed to have rated him during the Euros though and it turns out a club like Everton wants him now. I wouldn’t have predicted he would draw such interest but then again he’s just 21-22 years old or so. He plays everywhere in defense and midfield too (except the left wings) but is a defensive type of player with some effective long range shots every once in a while.
I just don’t want him to be a scouser lol! Next thing we know he’ll be doing the Liverpool kiss while he plays for the national team!
