As we had suggested yesterday, Newcastle made a £7M bid for Pablo Aimar and seemed in the driving seat to capture the Argentine star.
Pablo Aimar – Argentine on way to Newcastle for medical
It now looks like Pablo Aimar will be signing for the Newcastle club, probably today, after he undergoes a medical at the club – and it’s a brilliant move by the club.
The Daily Mirror is reporting in an exclusive, and we believe their report, that Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan is about to sign Argentine star Pablo Aimar in a £7M deal, which will be the biggest signing he has made since returning to the club in January.
We believe Newcastle made a definite move on Sunday night for the player, and all events since then have suggested a Premier club was negotiating with Real Zaragoza and the player, and we were sure that club was Newcastle.
Newcastle have already agreed a price with Spanish club Real Zaragoza and have moved with tremendous speed when they had to, right under the noses of Portsmouth, Sunderland and Benfica, and were willing to pay the slightly increased fee of £7M, that Portsmouth had balked at.
Aimar is 28 years old and is a Keegan-type attacking player. He was getting close to joining Benfica, more as a default move, but Newcastle made their move, and we think he’ll become a Newcastle player, maybe even today, after undergoing a medical.
Agents for Aimar are due to fly into Newcastle today and close the deal, and since the policy of Newcastle is not to announce anything until it’s all complete, we may still not hear anything from the club today – but we hope to.
We still need to be a little cautious, but we expect the deal to go through, since the hard work has already been done.
We believe that signing Aimar, a player with the football skills and talent that Newcastle fans just love, will be a popular signing for the club, and may rid the club of rumors they are not willing to pay out the cash to attract the players they want and need this summer.
It’s been a very frustrating summer for Newcastle fans, but let’s give credit where credit is due and Keegan, Wise and the rest of the recruitment team have done one fabulous job in getting Aimar – a great great signing for the club.
Credit is due to Dennis Wise, Tony Jimenez and Jeff Vetere, along with Kevin for pulling off this deal – which will be great news for Newcastle fans everywhere.
The first three, and particularly Dennis Wise, have come in for lots of undeserved criticism this summer, but this is great work.
Some good news on the transfer front, at last.
