Newcastle Move In For Hamburg Midfielder

More good news today for Newcastle United fans, as well as getting close to signing Pablo Aimar, are now said to be interested in young Holland star Nigel De Jong.

Nigel de Jong – would be another excellent signing

The bad news is that it’s being reported by that bastion of truth, The Sun, 😀 but the deal is for £3M, and we think Nigel would be an interesting and very good signing for the Tyneside club.

The 23 year-old, who stands just under 5’9″ tall, starred for the Dutch in the recent Euro 2008, and he fits the bill of a young very good player who should get a lot better.

He moved to his present club Hamburg, from Ajax in 2006, who he joined as an eight year-old  youngster in 1993.   De Jong has played about 60 times for the German club, 96 times for Ajax and 26 times so far for Holland.

Nigel can play defensive midfield or right wing back, and seems to fit the type of player that Keegan is looking for, almost perfectly.

The German club are now managed by former Tottenham boss Martin Jol, and seem very keen to do a deal with Newcastle, as long as personal terms can be agreed with the player, but we would be surprised if that proved to be a difficulty.

For £3M we think De Jong would be another excellent signing for the club.

Let’s hope we get him.

Comments welcome.

    Very good, young talent.
I imagine he’d be a holding mid player for us – but can also play right wing back – so must have a good engine on him

Ed, what makes you say they are very keen to do a deal? Are they struggling financially?

I think he would be a good signing, but I reckon Jol would be loath to lose him. If we did get him, I reckon the fee would be closer to £6m. Which would still be a pretty good deal.

Ok am I the only one worried about the height in our squad, we already have one of the shorest teams in the Prem, and Gutierrez aside, Guthrie, Aimar, and De Jong are not gonna compete aerially in the middle of the park which does worry me as well as defending corners etc. Although I cant believe one of Hollands best players in Euro 2008 would go for £3m specially at 23 yrs old. Its rubbish at least the price. I know I may seem incredibly pesemistic but Im not sure Aimar is the best move either as if we plan to play him and Guthrie neither have defensive abilities. I like Aimar just worried he may be in it more for the money. If we have him fine hope he proves me wrong, and if we get De Jong good signing at £3m, but I would personally look at someone at least 6ft in the DM role.

A good capture if it is true – but it is a Sun report after all. We still need defensive cover and another striker who can help Viduka on his crutches, and Smith with his hair gel.

Great addition to the midfield squad, his versatility will be a huge asset. Hopefully he can be the new Steve Watson, someone we have missed since we let him go all those years back…..

Hopefully some defenders are being lined up too, this is the area we now need to concentrate on.

Please tell me we’re getting him, great player in Football Manager, and it took me a structured deal worth 9.5 million to get him from HSV 😛 , so anything below 6M would be an absolute steal.

A defensive young midfielder is a priority considering Butt and Geremi are getting a bit long in the tooth.
Can also play wing back, great !
Looks like the midfield is pretty much settled, providing we dont sell anyone.
Need Anelka or Bent up front to link with the two dwarfs, a decent central defender (Colloccini ?) Evans to back Beye then a backup
    leftsided wingback .
And we are set for the season, top six.

I tried to send this post about 20 minutes ago but the site seemed to have gone down so here goes again.

Ross I agree with some of your points, re. Aimar and De Jong. I would be somewhat surprised to get De Jong so cheaply but what a coup if we did. I can’t help feeling that Aimar won’t do the biz but would be very happy to be proved wrong.

Whilst height is preferable in defenders I think speed and strength is more important, a six foot plus giant might be good at heading but hopeless on the deck. Also some shorter players jump better than some of the more bulky ones so lack of height wouldn’t unduly bother me.

I’ll get excited when he’s signed. The fee just seems rediculously low for a 23 years old international.
Plus it’s coming from the Sun. Same with Aimar, it’s still only newspaper talk. I hope we get both but I’m not over confident just yet, fingers crossed though!

i sadly cant see this happening as the strength of the rumour is nothing more than someone (eg some idiot at the sun) claiming we might be interested in him.
however, can always hope, he’s a great player, i really enjoyed watching him at the euro’s and would love him in a toon shirt.

no offence, im a toon fan too, but i really think a player of his stature going to sign only for big4 or top 6 PL clubs,if he were to play in the EPL
