We have heard rumors over the last two days, from some of our readers, that Newcastle United are close to signing three new players this week.
Nigel De Jong tacking that Russian fella
While we don’t know if this is true, it does come from people who work within the club, and the news today on Pablo Aimar, and Nigel De Jong suggest that Newcastle are getting close to signing some players, before the end of the week.
Let’s be clear, if we can sign Aimar and De Jong for a combined £10M, that is good business in anybody’s eyes.
Newcastle will not participate in the madness seemingly being reported in the transfer market that Robinho is worth £48M, and even Robbie Keane, who Graeme Souness was interested in during January 2006, for just £5M, is said to possibly bring £20M, seems so over the top.
There’s no way these players are worth that amount of money, and the deals will not go through for that type of money.
But to suggest paying £20M for Keane is more than ridiculous, because he’s not worth that money, although he’s still a very good player.
We’d rather see the club buy some of the players they are after for £2M-£5M, because there seem to be many of them available this summer, and they could turn out to be excellent players for Keegan.
A huge transfer buy doesn’t mean it’s a good buy, and in fact in Newcastle’s case it generally means the opposite, if our history is anything to go by.
We are after Aimar and De Jong and it looks like Anton Ferdinand doesn’t want to come to Newcastle.
That’s not a blow to most Newcastle fans, since 61% in our poll don’t think Ferdinand would be a good buy for Newcastle.
If we are to bring in a young defender we’d much rather go after 20 year-old Jonny Evans from the Red Devils. Since Sunderland seem to be after 27 year old Romanian Dorin Goian, that could mean they are no longer interested in Evans, and could possibly leave the way open for Newcastle.
Newcastle need to look at some defensive captures and at the very least we will need to bring in a left back and a central defender.
We do have 6′ 2″ Metz defender Sebastien Bassong on trial at the club this week, so the three signings could well be Aimar, De Jong and Bassong, all good captures, and Bassong would cost Newcastle no more than £3M.
Things may be looking up by the time we play Hartlepool United on Saturday, and if we can get these signings done and dusted, Newcastle fans could be feeling a whole lot better very soon. Â Â 😀
