Reports That Newcastle After Chilean Striker

July 16th, 2008 · 135 Comments

There are some reports coming in that Newcastle United, who still need to sign a striker this summer, may be interested in Chilean International, 27 year-old Humberto Suazo.

humberto-suazo.jpg

Humberto Suazo - can score goals - but In Premier league?

Reports today suggest that Turkish giants Galatasaray have moved to sign one of the most consistent goal scorers in world football over the past 5 seasons.

He is the Chilean striker Humberto Suazo, but there is now word that both Newcastle United and Tottenham may be targeting the South American star.

We have to say immediately that we have no idea if this story is true.

And even though Humberto has scored goals galore over the last four years, we think it debatable whether he could continue to do that in the Premier league, the toughest league in the world.

Humberto Andrés Suazo Pontivo was born in 1981, in San Antonio, Chile, and currently plays for CF Monterrey in Mexico.

Here’s his playing record since 2004, which is strewn with goals.

Season Club Games Goals

2004-2005 Audax 62 40
2006-2007 Colo-Colo 75 70
2007 - Present CF Monterrey 31 19

2005-present Chile 24 10

In the last 4 years he has played 168 club games and scored 129 goals.

We’ll have to see if anything comes of these reports, but at 5′8″ tall he is hardly the holding big striker we think Kevin is after this summer.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

tells you something about the standard of there football when half the people on this blog probably didn’t think mexico had a league

  • 3 geordiekk // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:37

how do u know tom toon

  • 4 euanpolo // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:39

He has a good scoring record but I’d prefer a big holding striker like Huntelaar, Gomis etc. We already have two good, small supporting strikers who are probably better than him anyway. Good to see Aimar on his way, lets add De Jong, Insua a striker and a centre-back to that list!

  • 5 neil009 // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:39

Off topic guys, but does anybody think we should have went for Robbie Fowler on trial? experienced head, would have done the job for a season

  • 6 Davies // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:39

I aksed about this guy earlier and nobody answered. Will playing in Mexican and Chilean leagues make him compatible with the EPL.

  • 7 Tom_Toon // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:41

Davies, i answered you about 10 mins after you said it, go back to the thread.

  • 8 natedawg // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:42

not fowler , he hasnt played since he left liverpool first time round

  • 9 Graham // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:42

Neil009 - Please stop taking those pills you know they’re no good for you! And theyre probably not legal with comments like that.

  • 10 Graham // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:43

Sorry Neil009 - No in answer to your question, Blackburn are welcome to him

  • 11 Irish toon9 // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:44

Dont think its true..we def need a player to hold the ball up though for our midfielders and attackers to run onto..can anyone think of someone that can do a job like that? no one springs to mind thats available and has prem experience..

  • 12 toooooon fan // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:45

has neil009 been hit over the head with a shovel
    ROBBIE FOWLER????
    ARE YOU SERIOUS???

  • 13 beye the great // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:47

the mexican league is actually a lot better than people think and is actually as good if not better than the argentinean league and not far of the brazilian league i may be wrong but i think one of thier teams actually won thesouth american champions league wheather or not he would be a good signing or not is devatable coz as ed said we do need someone a bit bigger but you never know just look at rooney and tevez did any 1 see abas interview on skysports i am not sure whether or not he is trying to say he wants to stay and also his voice is a lot lower in pitch from when i last heard him

  • 14 sean667 // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:47

tom toon are you still upsettin people lmao.
i don`t think i believe this one, anyway does de jong think he`s better thn us or wot?

  • 15 neil009 // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:49

Hey Tooooon fan, not hit over the head with a shovel, but as a back up player, 2nd best striker, of his type in the history of the premiership, behind Alan Shearer, and besides, a dead Robbie Fowler, in a box, cremeated and scattered over Stanley Park will still score more goals than Alan Smith and Shola combined

  • 16 Patrick // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:49

This is making no sense at all. Ed is right. He is not a holding big forward. Additionally, he is PL-unproven and he is already 27.

…if he comes on free, that makes more (unrealistic) sense.

Robbie Fowler… again, if he’s free, that could be a yes, but is he satisfied playing 1 min each match (like backup’s backup)

  • 17 geordieboy // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:50

Slowly but surely we are getting bodies in,are there any other supporters in the world who are as optimistic as us Geordies when we make a signing or two?????

  • 18 ramalama // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:50

hey neil any chance of havin some of what your on mate?

still think we should make an audacious bid for SWP tbh, i mean even ian wrights sayin he should leave so maybe he might see sense now
shame to see bridge agreein a new deal today aswell would loved to have seen him here, but at 80k a week i think its best he’s stayin at chelski

  • 19 Irish toon9 // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:51

    Good point neil haha

  • 20 Lutterbach // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:51

Honestly, he won’t be able to make this quantum of goals in the English Premier League.

  • 21 Geordie Nick // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:52

neil009- dont be so silly, robbie fowler, u obviously dnt have much ambition for the club if you want to see players lyk fowler being signed for us ffs

  • 22 toooooon fan // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:53

    neil
maybe 7 years ago but dont you think we should be setting our sights a little higher than fowler

  • 23 Geordie Nick // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:57

we shud be setting our sights A LOT higher than robbie fowler, we shudnt be thinkin of bringin in backup players we shud be getting players tht are younger and better than wat we have and using our current players as backup, ie bringin in a top young striker and using viduka as backup, not bringin in robbie fowler to backup up wat we alreayd have

  • 24 geordiekk // Jul 16, 2008 at 17:58

i would rather sign tom toons idea of dave kitson than fowler and i think kitson is awful

would be a good replacement for joint transfers of Smith and Ameobi!! I personally would take him for £6 - 7million even if he can get half his goal record in the premiership!!

when you consider alot of european clubs have south american players!! and the PL!!

  • 38 neil009 // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:14

Woah, alright lads, didn’t expect such a backlash, was just a suggestion, not even a suggsetion with any conviction behind it either.

C’mon Pablo Aimar!! one of the 125 people Maradona has said is the next Maradona

  • 39 nufc09 // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:14

yeh i think cuellar could be on his way once rangers have a replacement, they were after shittu but his wages were to high.

  • 40 Andy // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:14

Nobody may have not heard of this guy but had anyone heard of bafetimbi gomis before we were linked with him? His goalscoring record is sensational for club - and country so it shows he can do it at a high level. We should just go for him, none of our strikers exactly have a good goalscoring record do they? If we don’t get this guy, we should go for falcao from river plate or Rodrigo Palacios from Boca. These are top quality strikers and any of these 3 would be quality.

It’s been confirmed by itv that we r close to signing aimar and his agents are on tyneside to finalise deal. A fee of £7m agreed. Also nigel de jong has denied reports linking him with us-shame

  • 41 Lacedaemonian // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:14

Has anyone/everyone seen the goals this Suazo goals has scored - it’s on YouTube? He might not transfer it to the Premiership but he knows where the goal is and he scores all sorts of goals, some cracking efforts.

  • 45 geordiekk // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:22

i think aimar is a done deal

  • 46 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:22

Defo.. a Keegan player!! remember Tino!!!

  • 47 Tom_Toon // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:23

    Suazo is nothing like Tino.

The closest person i have seen to Tino is an Egyptian called Shikabala or maybe Farfan, but he has just moveds to Schalke.

  • 48 Obafan // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:24

I don’t think this is true.

I hope that the signing of Aimar will get announced soon.

Because De Jong said that he is concentrating on HSV, does not mean that if a good offer comes that he will not take it. What a midfield we could have:

Gutierez - De Jong - Aimar - Duff

  • 49 toooooon fan // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:26

  • 55 sean667 // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:33

should be able to get him at a reasoable price too

  • 56 Finnish Mag // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:35

Actually Humberto is very good and strong player. Last Copa America he was one of the best players of whole tournament. So yes please for this transfer :)

  • 57 geordiekk // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:35

i dont rate milner at all imo he is getting worse not better and i know he was injured alot last season but i would rather play a promising young player who has potential than persist with milner who has wasted potential just my oppinion he seems like a nice lad but wanting a pay rise after a crap season makes it all the more clear that we should get rid

  • 58 geordiekk // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:36

Farfan likes Tino?…Tom, you must be joking

good striker, time his run perfectly and very good finisher even in International level, score some beautiful goals

but not what we need…he is a goal scorer rather than a target man…

so, we wouldnt go for him

  • 63 toooooon fan // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:40

i think we all know if aimer comes it will be for the money and to be honest i think he could go the same way as luque
although in my opinion luque was very unlucky and was not given a fair chance to prove his obvious ability

  • 64 Tom_Toon // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:40

Farfan and Shikabala are the most similar players i’ve seen to Tino.

  • 66 cdonno // Jul 16, 2008 at 18:41

Anyone seen the “Exclusive: Boys are back in TOON” video on NUFC.co.uk yet?

We get to see Guittirez and Guthrie play a bit, but anyone recognise the tall guy in Orange Boots playing on the left? It’s not the 16yr old bulgarian and deffinitely not Bassong (as this guy is cocaisan).

He’s tall, looks like a cross between Christiano Ronoldo and Albert Luque. you don’t see him play, just run about a bit when the article moves on to talk about Milner.

    Anyone?

I wonder if we are still in for Arda Turan? Thought the lad played really well in the Euro’s and would definitely prefer him over Duff or N’Zogbia.

As for Milner i think he could learn a lot from Jonas and will improve for next season.

Hopefully we will sign Aimar and also another central midfielder.

Would love it if we got rid of Smith and Ameobi and signed any striker that will score goals. (apart from Robbie Fowler)

Davies, Humberto Suazo IMO is a tad too tubby in the midrift and he only stands 5′7″ tall …..
We already have a team full of midgets (Owen, Oba, Milner, N’Zogbia, Geremi, Guthrie, Duff, Smith and Butt) all of whom are 5′7 to 5′10 in height. Add to that the potential signing of Aimar and we would have a world championship limbo team on our hands. The last thing we need is another short player

  • 105 chikitita // Jul 16, 2008 at 19:36

Oba is stayin. great news! i can picture guthrie sliding through balls through to him all day long.

  • 106 Obafan // Jul 16, 2008 at 19:36

toooonfan and sean 667 - I think Duff will play his best season next year. He never was 100% fit in the previous seasons. Milner is way overrated and I would not give him a starters spot. In fact I think the board did not to good by keeping him, he will never be worth £9m and we could have got that for him. We could have used those £9m on buying a good and better (not difficult to find) replacement.

  • 107 micepie // Jul 16, 2008 at 19:36

Uhmmmmm…why are the Daily Mail so out-of-date!

“Newcastle ready to offer Duff in bid to land West Ham defender Ferdinand”

The Daily Mail - Newcastle 19:13

It was funny to see some headlines saying “Ferdinand the latest to snub Newcastle” too first thing this morning, because most of us don’t think he’s good enough for the Toon!

Id sell Duff and buy a youngster like Andrew Surman at Southampton for about £1mil because they are in so much financial trouble.

  • 111 ToonTimbo // Jul 16, 2008 at 19:43

    Congrats sean!!! :D

  • 112 Punk Skunk // Jul 16, 2008 at 19:46

TT, i take it that Surman is a winger then?..
…Any good?..How old?..Who does he remind you of?..

…All the best Sean & you Obafan!..

  • 113 cdonno // Jul 16, 2008 at 19:46

Theres a guy training with Newcastle that wears orange boots, plays on the left, is tall and looks a bit like Luque (same stance, hair colour). Anyone know of someone we might have on trial?

He’s built like Taylor and is similar height. Looks about 20-23

  • 114 ToonTimbo // Jul 16, 2008 at 19:49

Kadar is still not sure whether he is going on loan to norwich!! U would have thought they’d told him if it was iminent!!

  • 115 Punk Skunk // Jul 16, 2008 at 19:53

ToonTimbo, don’t believe everythin’ you read man… :D

  • 116 ToonTimbo // Jul 16, 2008 at 19:58

wot d’ya mean hu said i read it!!

  • 117 Punk Skunk // Jul 16, 2008 at 20:07

    Why, d’y'know him?..
    …Humblest apologies!..

  • 118 Matt Lacey // Jul 16, 2008 at 20:17

PunkSkunk, Surman is 21 and plays on the left wing, though So’ton are going to be using him as a left back in their new look formation. Good workrate, good at getting the ball in the box, can score goals too. 1m is a bit optimistic though, he’s one of So’ton’s best players so they’ll want to hang on to him, they’ve made a bit of cash out of selling Safri and also the 15% sell on clause from the Crouch deal anyway.

As for Saints youngsters, Jeffrey Imudia (right back) and Adam Lallana (attacking midfield) look very promising indeed, both of them have got pace and technical ability.

  • 119 ToonTimbo // Jul 16, 2008 at 20:19

well i have his facebook (so technically i dont know him) and lots have people have asked if he is going to norwich!! he says he does not know sounding like he really has not a clue!! Apologies accepted m8y :D

Oh and it is his facebook (not a fake)!! someonelse on this blog said they had it aswell!!

  • 120 Obafan // Jul 16, 2008 at 20:21

Thank you Punk Skunk ;-) !

  • 121 Gooderz // Jul 16, 2008 at 20:24

Just looked up Shikabala, who Tom_Toon mentioned earlier, and he appears to be a very good player, but may be a diamond in need of some polishing. He’s like a Cristiano Ronaldo impersonator if you look at some of his youtube clips.

  • 122 Punk Skunk // Jul 16, 2008 at 20:27

    Cheers Matt, appreciated!..

…ToonTimbo, yea soz man, maybe he’s been told to keep shtumm, or, maybe, like you say, he just doesn’t know yet?..Prob do him good tho’, if he ain’t quite ready for the step up?..

    …Y’welcome Obafan, njoy mate, i know i am!.. :D

  • 125 toon4ever(malta) // Jul 16, 2008 at 22:16

Hi every one… Well I check every single site to see news of incoming players at the toon and so far I think we made good signings. I wish we can get aimar hi will be a good adding to the team. The dejong news it’s not true coz he said he’s happy at hamburg and he has no intention of leaving. So let’s wait and see I think King Kev knows what he’s doing we need to give him time and see what he will bring.

  • 126 GeordieinChile // Jul 16, 2008 at 23:01

Wow! I know he is good for the Chilean national team and is well admired here in Chile, but for Newcastle, who knows? However, Id love him to sign purely so that I could watch Newcastle all the time on the TV, and it would be funny to see my South American work mates wearing toon tops.

  • 127 Mexi-Toon // Jul 17, 2008 at 0:23

whattttttt. this guy is class. i watch the mexican league alllll the time at home, and this guy has alot of skill. would be happy to see him try his luck in europe, as there is alot of skill in the mexican league. but of course, who knows if he’ll be able to handle foortball in england. i really believe that KK should look in to more young mexican players. they won the U-17 world cup a few years ago, beating brazil 3-0. theres so much skill in the mexican league, hopefully we have scouts down there.

  • 128 T-Nem // Jul 17, 2008 at 0:53

this guy is pure quality. In the last copa america, he scored the sexiest chip over the keeper against brazil after a nutmeg. i reckon he could deeeeef do well in the prem

  • 129 Potski // Jul 17, 2008 at 2:58

Robbie Fowler - are you kidding? He played a bit-part role in the championship last year and would be way out of his depth in the premiership now!
Don’t like the sound of Insua - if he was a decent prospect, Liverpool simply wouldn’t let him go, besides, we already have Tomas Kadar - same age, same position to back -up the promising Jose Enrique.
What NUFC need is a tried and tested premiership centerback and a solid midfielder or two who can compete against the best in the league.
Without these, Newcastle will struggle to mid-table mediocrity - again.

  • 130 gorskino10 // Jul 17, 2008 at 10:05

He wont cut it i dont recon in the Premier League just buy Monnet-Paquet he will be amazing believe me, and being with a relegated team he will be cheap.

  • 131 eric crammy mag // Jul 17, 2008 at 10:05

what,s up with dean ashton big strong centre forward

  • 132 spudgun // Jul 17, 2008 at 11:51

we seem to get linked with just about every player going - personally, I think it’s agents playing silly beggers just to get their players’ names in the press and hopefully get some interest from other clubs.
If we go for any strikers, then a big strong one is what we need - not another member of Snow Whites 7 dwarves.
And a defender…for fecks sake…our back line is as sparce as a mackems brain cells. Come on Kev.. get the defence sorted out.

  • 133 Barry Venison // Jul 17, 2008 at 11:58

i’ve always thought this guy is class, never seen him play for his clubs, but runs the show for chile

  • 134 Micky Magpie // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:01
