There are reports today that Newcastle United have had a bid for Blackburn Rovers’ former Liverpool left back Stephen Warnock rejected.
Stephen Warnock – good player but unlikely to leave Blackburn
The Times is reporting today that Newcastle placed a £3M bid for the full-back, but the offer was not surprisingly turned down by the Ewood Park club.
We’re a bit late trying to sign Warnock, since he was available from Liverpool for around £1.5M 18 months ago, when Mark Hughes picked him up at a bargain £1.5M, and he’s played well for Blackburn ever since – another great buy by Hughes.
Stephen had joined Liverpool back in 1998 as a 16 year-old youngster.
Many Newcastle fans at the time wondered why Newcastle hadn’t moved for the player, but it looks like his price has doubled, and we’re not at all surprised that Blackburn have rejected the bid.
Obviously Newcastle need to sign at least two defenders this summer, a left back to challenge the impressive Spaniard Jose Enrique, and a center-back to replace the departed David Rozehnal, Peter Ramage and Lamine Diatta.
The search obviously continues.
