Today’s Toon Transfer Targets

After yesterday’s rather turbulent day, when it looked like we may be signing Pablo Aimar from Real Zaragoza, we are after even more players, according to the morning papers today.

Eren Derdiyok – are Newcastle still interested in Swiss 20 year-old?

Here’s a list of players we have recently been reported to be after. We have to keep remembering to take some of these with a pinch of salt, although it looks like we were in yesterday for Pablo.

He may have chosen Benfica, although his situation is still far from clear even now.   Here are some other players we are reported to be after.

  • We are said to be in a battle with Everton for Spurs defender Pascal Chimbonda, according to The Sun. The price is said to be £4M. Martins Jol’s Hamburg is also interested.
Everton are probably the 5th best team in England right now, and can offer UEFA Cup football next season – so that’s what we’re up against to get Pascal to Tyneside.
  • The Independent is reporting that we’ve had a £3M bid for Blackburn Rovers left-back Stephen Warnock rejected. But the paper also suggests that  Newcastle may return with a better offer for the once capped English left back, who started his career at Liverpool.
He’s a decent player but let’s not pay too much for him.
  • The Newcastle Journal is mentioning another left back associated with Liverpool, 19 year-old Argentine full-back Emiliano Insua, but we had thought Liverpool had already rejected the approach and the player after all, just signed a new 3 year deal on July 2nd.
We think he would be a good buy, if we can get him – but not on loan.
  • We did report yesterday there were reports that Newcastle were interested in 27 year-old Chilean striker Humberto Suazo, who plays for CF Monterry in Mexico. That news is reported in several papers this morning, but we have no idea if the reports are true. We think not. Wonder what has happened to our move for 20 year old Swiss striker, Eren Derdiyok.
We don’t know if the club has been put off by his price tag from his club FC Basle, which was quoted at £6M, with Newcastle presumably willing to pay only £3M. He would be a good buy, and is still available presumably.
  • One report we were half expecting is from The Daily Star who are now claiming Newcastle United are interested in Sunderland 6’5″ central defensive target, Dorin Goian of Steaua Bucharest. The 27-year-old defender was a member of Romania’s Euro 2008 squad which was eliminated at the group stage at this summer’s championships, but he looked a very strong player.
It may be too late for him, since we’ve read reports saying he would love to join Sunderland – let’s forget him if that’s the case.   😀
  • Reports yesterday that we have lodged a £3M bid for 23 year old Holland star Nigel De Jong. The reports said that Newcastle were keen and his club Hamburg were keen to do the deal.
There were reports yesterday, that he had rejected the Newcastle link – but when you look at what he really said – he just indicated he was happy at Hamburg – a standard response from a player at any club.
So we may still have hopes on this one, although that hope has diminished significantly.
  • The Sun is reporting today that Newcastle are about to wrap up a deal for Pablo Aimar for £7M, and hope to have the deal completed soon.  What planet are they on?
Maybe they just read yesterday’s Daily Mirror exclusive. But the Benfica web-site was reporting late last night Pablo will sign for the club for around £6M if he completes his medical successfully today.
Do we think that’s true? – we have no idea – but it sounds like deja vu – all over again to us.

Comments are welcome, but please keep them civil.

I hope we can attract a few quality players. I know that nothins is confirmed about the whole Aiamar saga, but I must say that I am really disappointed that we did not get him. We could have used him in our center no doubt about that.

We still need a couple of important spots in the team to be filled:
    1 or 2 CB
    1 LB
    1 CDM
    1 CAM
    1 ST

That leaves 5 or 6 players to get in. It is possible to get a few younger players (LB and ST); but the central midfield positions need to be filled with proven players, cause those areas need to be stronger than this season. I think we need creativity to make our strikers (Oba and MO) more dangerous.

Of those mentioned only De Jong is worthwhile, but he will be alot more than any £3m.
And yes I agree with “nightfall”nobody seems to know who we are after.
    Not even KK.
One thing for sure, whoever it is we may sign, it wont be for serious money.

Bcause we are not in europe it is going to be hard to sign top players but i dont think that is all players look at.
If you are looking for a new job being in a happy ship with a great atmosphere also matters, so when players look at Newcastle the recent history what with Dyer & Bowyer incident the Bellamy shambles and now Joey Barton i think if i was a player with the choice of clubs i would think twice about Newcastle United considering that they havent acted decisively about Barton

Jeez! What a club. What a day!
Young Guthrie expects to get us into Europe (somebody please have a word). Steve Harper is pointing out, the fact that there are about 5 more empty changing-room pegs alongside the couple of empty pegs we already had last year. Not to mention the square pegs Sam tried to fit into the team.
… and then there’s Pablo Aimar, who said: “I am going to Portugal with my family to start a new adventure.” A New Adventure?? !!!!
You helped get ’em relegated, you muppet.
    Good riddance!

Having been offline for the last 10 days, this situation is something of a shock. Far from being highly organized in knowing who we were going after, it looks to be yet another shambles.

This is despite now having a full time team of recruitment specialists supposedly working flat out, earning a fortune, lining up the transfer deals. Nothing would appear to be futher from the truth.

With Mike Ashley’s parsimonious outlook to the recruitment of new players and the retention of existing ones, the current situation is far from positive. We are currently woefully understaffed and having great difficulty in recruiting even average players, which must have something to do with MA’s cost cutting, his failure to invest in playing staff, his stated aim to reduce costs and the noted lack of ambition in the recruiting department.

If things dont improve dramatically, fairly quickly, we could well be starting the new season in an even worse situation than the last, with the worrying consequences that brings for the fans and the club. I just dont fancy another season where avoiding a relegation fight is our only objective!!

Chimponda is a proper money driven no pride player hope we don’t sign him.

Shame about Aimar…but these things happen and to be honest he may have been a gamble anyway.

Onwards and upwards as they say i will be ignoring all transfer links on all media until it is on the newcastle official site or a statement is made from the club i am sure we will bag some talented senior players over the coming weeks and I am sure kk and his team are trying hard to get suitable players.

I’ve a feeling this is the striker that we are due to sign on Monday .. seeing that if we do get a striker in they’ll have to wait behind Martins and Owen .. n the duke if fit .. so this guy fits the bill in my opinion ie. one for the future.

DE JONG has to be looked at as a serious option, IMO he is better thatn INLER, good experience and would fit into the EPL without a problem.
He is a strong defensive midfield player and as we saw at the Euro’s , he looks very comfortable on the ball and looks to be a solid tackler.
3Million would be a snip as in todays market I wouldnt expect to get him for less than 5Million.

He was brilliant at Ajax a few years ago and now plays alongside Van Der Vaart and Kompany, another 2 cracking prospects, although particularly in the case on Van Der Vaart probably out of our limits.

Lets hope we get a couple more in quickly, that way they can benefit from a decent pre-season schedule.

RE Graeme..Good points but let’s be honest we don’t work for the club and we have no idea what is going on behind the scenes..yes I am worried like yourself but as punk skunk pointed out to me there is nothing we can do about is out of the fans hands and I would just sit back and see what happens and try and keep a smile on your face.

I was so negative on here about many things Wise, transfer funds,Ashley but at the end of the day i am just a fan and it is out of my hands…and yours.

i know sum people wil diasgree but i believe we only need 3-4 signings more, when u luk at our team our spine is more than capable with given/harper, faye, butt and owen thru the middle. we proved this the last 7 games of the season keegan changed the system and it worked, we luked solid!

ok 1st a cb is needed for a cover but ready 2 cum in play 20 games a season, luk all the top teams settled defences. right bck and left bck is where u brood d youngstars in e.g tozer, edgar, kadar

2 creative midfielders not necsarily tall but jus gud with the ball, know how to pass and move eg barton who is a gud playa but a complete tool

1 striker who does not have to be tall but willing to put himself about and is creative. luk at united rooney, ronaldo and tevez all hav football brains and are willin 2 work for each other.

    anyway thats jus my opinion

how is 6 mill to much i am wondering why is Daniels sources were right we pulled out both times on cash why bloody bid on them in the first place if you dont hav enough cash im really not happy him saying he pulls out of a 7 mill deal maybe thinking he only has 7 mill left, which would be terrible as Jonas was free and Guthrie was 2 so it cant be he was only given 10 mill if so thats worth a slap at Ashley these days you cant buy a Mars bar for 10 mill lol let alone a few players its waiting to see who comes in as i think he should have ALL transfers bar 1 by next week.

As long as the club is not spending big money on players that isn´t worth it I´m happy.

Much rather have a player for 3 million that´s worth it than a player for 10M that is worth 5…

Also belives 3 more signings might be enough… As long as it is players that can go straight in to the starting 11… The midfield doesn´t look to good in my eyes! And we can do with some better in both defence and attack.

Michael Owen isn’t going to sign a new contract if we don’t pay him properly. Why would he sign a deal for £30,000 a week less – which would be about £4.5m less over three years? This is his last “big” contract, after all and he’s not stupid, he knows he can get the same money somewhere else.

We need to buy a good young striker. In 12 months’ time Owen will leave and Viduka will be properly past it, leaving us with just Martins and Carroll up front, assuming Shola goes this year and assuming Smith doesn’t suddenly turn into a good player again.

Graeme’s articulate comments are so woefully true. We will end up signing breadcrumbs just to make the numbers up. I still feel that there is something disorganised about NUFC’s backroom organisation. Not on the coaching side but elsewhere. I get the impression that our so-called recruitment team are a bunch of suited muppets who are out of contact with KK, the team (as it is) and the fans. You cannot generate or have passion just because you have a big wad in your wallet and a bespoke jacket and trews on your back. Is KK in charge or some west end of London barrow boy? It is our team, our heritage, we are talking about not somebody’s toy!!!!

This may seem a ratehr stupid idea in a way, but as been as we need quick players, and fat sam sold all of our good players, why doesnt keegan go and get them back, dyer would love to work with keegan, as the style of play would suit him, bellamy…maybe or maybe not… and what about darren ambrose from charlton…which tosser sold him???? he was brilliant when he was actually allowed to play??…sell smith, butt, geremi ect, try to resign dyer and ambrose, use the extra cash to sign…say…a young brazillian called celsinho, and look at alot of other young brazzilians, tehyre fast, and play with flair, and is what KK likes to use, and then go and sign adefensive midfielder who is strong and will will win the ball, as well as supply the ball to the wingers and forwards, de jong??
