There are reports surfacing again that Kevin Keegan is reportedly still leading the race for the signature of exciting young Turkish winger Arda Turan. Let’s say right now that we don’t know if these reports are true, only that they are starting up again and Arda is still at Galatasaray.

Arda Turan - are Newcastle still hoping to sign player?
The 21-year-old Galatasaray midfielder, who can play on either wing, and looked great in Euro 2008, was a strong target for Newcastle before those championships began.
Unfortunately for Newcastle his form in June attracted other bigger clubs, including AC Milan and Juventus, but so far niether has made a strong move for the player, with the hype of Euro 2008, now died down somewhat.
One of our readers sent a note yesterday saying that maybe Newcastle are still in with a chance, since AC Milan seemed to have closed shop for
the rest of the transfer season (allegedly), and Juventus haven’t signed him either.
If Newcastle seriously still want to sign the player, we may well have to pay up to £13M for him, but earlier reports this summer suggest we were unwilling to pay more than around £8.5M, which were reportedly not well received by the Galatasaray President Adnan Polat.
Arda has won 22 caps for his country already (with 3 goals), and looks a potentially great player in the making, and we’d hope his Turkey team-mate Emre, would speak well of the Tyneside club.
We’d love to know what the real situation is right now with Arda, and of course we don’t - but the longer the youngster goes without signing for a bigger club, the better chance it would seem Newcastle have.
Hope so anyway.

I see McGready has signed a 5 yr contract with Celtic.
We are running out of options if we are to buy a LW. But then spiderman plays there, albeit rightfooted…..so is it a RW we need?
You know what i just havent got a clue anymore, i feel pretty low regarding Newcastle for the first time since Ashley bought the club. I have always tried to remain positive and will continue in this vain, but there are cracks in my armour.

agnetha.
why else would we call a press conference?.
if it was true, the press would know about.
A press conference is specifically for the press to chanel a message to the public/fans.
so if the press dont know about it must surely be lies.
14 The Entertainers // Jul 17, 2008 at 12:12
I hope this press conference, if it happens, involves Keegan.
I dont mind the club keeping silent regarding transfers, but come on Kev your the face of Newcastle United and i for one want to hear from you.
Are the preseason transfer targets running smoothly?
Do you have enough cash to spend?
Is training going well?
Are you happy at the club?
Just talk to us Kev, please. I’ve never felt this distant from the club. Even FF Shepard could feel the mood of the fans and would address it from time to time. Not always wanted and not always needs, but he tried to stay in touch with us.

I dont want Ashely to come out and make grand statements like Shepard did with Rooney. But we need to hear from Kev !
18 broon ale // Jul 17, 2008 at 12:17
i dont mind keegans silence.
when ever he says something the media give him a hard time over it.
there wont be a press conference just so keegan can say,
“sorry i have been on the quiet side, i am happy and i have a few quid to spend so i will try and spend it wisely”
i think we all need to excercise some patience.
and i know that is hard as i confess to being slightly worried.

why’s everyone asking for a statement from the club?
It would be bad buisness for the club to discuss transfer targets, how much we have to spend etc.
That type of buisness was done during the FFS’s reign, & we ended up paying silly money for way too many poor players.
Were all desperate for signings, but come on lads, stop slagging the club for gettin there game together & keeping our transfer buisness in house.
26 heads23552 // Jul 17, 2008 at 12:31
For once we are not paying over the odds, we are not( so far) panic buying, the press no nothing, we are running like a proper business and building a team carefully, the only problem I see is impatient and unrealistic fans.
27 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 17, 2008 at 12:33
Come on lads look at things logicaly!! KK wise and co. name targets and the board (derek and MA) take over when it comes down to contracts!! they arn’t offering enough money in salarys for quality to come to the club!!
the clubs first choice targets have probably went else where so we are onto our second and third options but still have problems with wages!!
sorry lads but Ashley doesn’t want to spend the money! yes we’ll end up with new signings but what about there Quality!! you only get what you pay for!! can you really see kk being happy? because I cant!! lads although we have over a month in transfer activity realistically we are going to be left behind by portsmouth, villa, even fulham are getting signings!!
and what are we doing just sitting back and paying our over priced season tickets! its not on! we deserve more!! ashley please sell up soon!!
heads23552 - watch the club, Yes I am impatient because I spend my money to be entertained!!
28 broon ale // Jul 17, 2008 at 12:46
i am willing to make a statement to summarise what i think will happen with regards to transfers.
we will sign AT LEAST 3 more players and the chances are they will not have even been linked with the club previously.
each signing will appear confirmed on nufc.co.uk.
more than likely the signings will not be the hollywood signings some of us seemingly crave.
they may well be in the same catergory of Guthrie and an unheard of Argentinian.
these types of sinings are more important to us than the likes of Aimar, deco etc etc.
players who want to sign for us who have their best years ahead of them.
how many had heard of ginola or rob lee before they had signed. I remember very well how people reacted at the time. we werent doing cart wheels i can tell you but we were content. we were content because we had no delussions of grandear. we had faith in the club and the manager.
now everyone suspects our owners of having a alterior motive and deep down we worry if KK is the man to bring us success(even though we love the man)
the 2 things that made us content are missing therefore we are all insecure and it presents itself in such a negatice fashion.
we took the aimar situation as a disaster but if you look closely you will the man is nearly 29 and his best years are behind him now.
even if we take the likes of the bobby robson era. how many people heard of charles Nzogbia?
we may well get more signings, like i say.. at least 3 new lads for definate.
they might not be the names you desire but just please try and demonstrate some perspective and awareness where newcastle actually stand in the grand scheme of things these days.
the players we end up with will be the best of what we can get.

£13m. ,first he aint worth that amount, second if you have`nt figured out this club is not about to spend any serious money, then you just dont get it.
Be patient, KK knows what he is doing etc. etc.
KK himself is probably wondering what the hell is going on.
Apparently theres going to be a press conference in the near future, it would behove both the PR dept. and whoever is running things to clarify the present situation regading both transfers and managerial decisions.
It would also be nice to hear what ambitions they have for the club , both present and future,
I recently read where Harper declared an eighth place finish would be welcome.
If a club rated fifth in the PL by EUAFA has an ambition to achieve an eighthplace finish, you may ask why ?

right ok so KK decides not to pay 7 mill as he thought over it as too much but now we have to pay over 8/12 mill for Arda not going to happen, these clubs are still blinkered with there estimates. its not worth it for 12 mill we can get Inlar for 5 and another player for 7 and as it looks like money is tight do this.We need a holding midfielder so why not Inlar for 5 mill its a bargin so why did they pull out of this deal as well. Mike spent 133million on our club , and got a football club for it !!!!
the ‘debt’ , is more likely still owed somewhere down the line , mike wouldnt have paid it off completely , whats the point in that ?
do rich people pay off their mortages early ?
no, its much more economical to pay it off over the 25 year like everyone else .
im guessing the club owe’s one of mikes companys that 80m still , just like chelsea owe abramovich 400 million .
mike is putting his head on the chopping board here , if we fail next season , it will only be said that he never backed his manager .
52 Jim // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:31
It’s time to kick back and enjoy the Summer. I believe Turan to be a better signing than Aimar but am not holding my breath.
The money that’s involved in these signings as well as their future contracts needs careful consideration and I’m very happy about our cautious approach. Face it, EVEN IF Ashley did decide to leave (and I don’t think he will any day soon) he would leave us with a healthy club.
There’s still lots of transfer time available, it’s just a pity that the good start everyone wants might not be with a fully assembled, fit and integrated squad.
Whatever happens, we’re probably in for the most competetive season of the Premierships short history and out major opponents will be West Ham, Blackburn, Everton, Villa, Pompey and Spurs.
I can only hope our squad will be able to mix it with these clubs come September. Ha’way the Lads!

david NEWCASTLE UNITED!-i like mcgeady but he reminds me of milner a little. not in the way he plays but in his faults. he’s got alot of pace and a great touch but he doesnt look up at the right times. when the pass is on he wont play it, he’ll look to beat another man and will at times lose the ball and squander a great attacking opportunity.
i didnt notice at first but i have numerous mates who are celtic fans and pointed it out as a problem for them, and after sitting watching him on umpteen occasions i can see what they mean.
