Celtic’s winger Aiden McGeady has finally signed a new 5 year deal at the Glasgow club, so he will not be signing for Newcastle anytime soon, another player to drop from the list.

Aiden McGeady - signs 5 year deal at Celtic
If Kevin Keegan has any plans of trying to get the player to Tyneside, this will certainly change those plans.
Celtic’s chief executive Peter Lawwell said about the signing today:
“Aiden’s performances in recent seasons have made him the outstanding player in Scottish football.”
“Clearly we are delighted that he has committed his long-term future to the club.â€
Obviously an excellent long term deal for both the player and his club.
The 22-year-old had a great season last year, and could have fitted in well at Newcastle, since he seems a Kevin Keegan type attacking winger.
McGeady has won Celtic’s Young Player of the Year award for the past 4 seasons as well as winning the club’s Player of the Year award, and the SPFA Player’s Player and Player of the Year awards for 2007/2008.
He certainly doesn’t seem short of winning personal honors, but we’re not going to dwell on this, because he’s not available to Newcastle.
We’ll need to move on.
Comments welcome.

It’s all very well saying that you didn’t want him after he chose not to go but slating his talent is showing real bitterness. The guy has proven it last 2 years running in europe’s toughest comp the CL. He has ripped defenders of higher calibre than newcastle’s apart. McGeady is the real deal and those who have played him agree- messi, puyol, ancelloti etc. Good luck next season anyhow and enjoy watching aiden in CL

Now now boys, one-trick pony? Spoken like you haven’t seen him play, as usual. Tell you what, we’ll stick to our easy league and our last 16 of the Champions League every year, you stick to the bottom half of the self-styled “greatest league in the world”.
A lot of Celtic fans actually like Toon but it’s uneducated comments that cause the pathetic internet point scoring I’ve just indulged in!! Hail hail and good luck for the new season.

you can stepover and run at defenders all day, but if you dont look up and play the killer ball at the right time then you’re effectively useless.

While I understand we can all be biased about our own teams and players, I am delighted Aiden is staying. Not sure where you get the ‘one-trick pony’ thing from Tom Toon. He’s been outstanding for us, not just in the SPL, but in the Champions League. Twice at Parkhead he turned Maldini inside out and the Barca players were raving about him after last season’s last 16 Champions League tie, many of them suggesting he should be playing in La Liga. Arsenal have been trying to sign him since he was 15. The guy has bags of talent.

Arda Turan
——————————————————————————–
Turkish Euro 2008 Star Winger Attracting Huge Premier League Interest: Newcastle Lead Arsenal, Spurs & Middlesbrough in Chase
Kevin Keegan is reportedly still leading the race for the signature of exciting young Turkish winger Arda Turan ahead of Premier League rivals Tottenham, Man City, Arsenal and Boro.
The 21-year-old Galatasaray midfielder has just enjoyed his most prolific season to date after scoring 7 goals in 30 League appearances last time out. However, since breaking into the first team he has scored an impressive 12 goals from 57 League appearances and has become a mainstay of the team that won the Turkish title last season. His match-winning performances in Turkey’s superb Euro 2008 displays only intensified the growing interest in the exciting winger.
If Newcastle do seriously want to sign the player they may well have to pay up to £13million as reports of the Toon’s reluctance to pay more than £8.5million were met with disdain by Galatasaray President Adnan Polat. The Magpies were reportedly in a hurry to get Turan signed up before the European Championships as they feared impressive performances by the player at the tournament would push his value up even further. Unfortunately for the Tyneside giants, that is exactly what happened. Arda has won 22 caps for his country (3 goals) despite his tender age after progressing from the U19 and U21 sides. The youngster is both quick and two footed and has been likened to former Galatasaray legend Gheorghe Hagi in his home country so could be Newcastle’s answer to David Ginola from Keegan’s first spell in charge.
The player generally plays on the left-wing so his arrival should signal the end of Damien Duff’s injury-prone stint on Tyneside with North-East rivals Sunderland interested although Turan can also play on the right if needed. He could also replace Stewart Downing at the Riverside if Liverpool step up their interest in the player or fill Spurs troublesome left-midfield slot.

why would mcgeady want to join an average sized provincial football club that has never won anything of note and probably never will?. I’m not tryin to be confrontational this is an honest question and i would like it if i could get an honest answer. Think about it, yes celtic are stuck in the scottish league but they play european football every season and have taken some huge scalps over recent seasons, now why would a celtic supporter leave the club he loves to sign for a team who probably wont play in any european competitions in the forseable future, will nufc ever break into the top 4? no!, will they be able to match spurs villa or the big spending man city? probably not imho. so why would he go to the epl unless to a side challenging for honours?

get off your high horse and actually watch some leagues outside of england and you might actually have a decent opinion on football that others might take heed off. at present your head is up your own epl ar$e
try being a bit more humble and reasoned in your assessments.
watch la liga; watch seria a, watch the bundesliga, watch erdvise .. you might learn about real football and not just over paid athletes going through the motions in the epl.

YER MAN- The scottish league is worse than the MLS in the states. celtic and rangers sign the players from first division sides in england. They only attract foreigners who want to play champs league football. You may have a big support but teams like stoke and hull who have just been promoted would finish in the top 4 up there.
30 Tasty Magpie // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:03

Looks like the question of whether McGeady would cut it in the prem isn’t gonna be answered any time soon, good luck to the kid at least he plays the game the right way.
Now we REALLY need another RW. In the past I would have been quick to suggest SWP but reading some of the Chelski fan’s comments RE his possible move to Pompey makes me think differently. NO MORE TOP FOUR HAS-BEENS!

agnetha- as far as the MLS goes i cant say alot, i did live in the states for a while but never seen alot of the football, a few players there did impress me. As for celtic, they can only win the league that they are in and thats is exactly what they are doing at the minute. Celtic are finding it hard to attract players as you say, which is exactly why they have to keep producing the likes of aiden mcgeady from the youth ranks. Take a look at the money in english footbal, how can celtic compete with that?l. For Celtic the only way forward is investing in youth development and the new training facilties opened this year will hopefully provide. NUFC imo are in the same boat too though, you may have the vast amounts of skt tv money but will it help you pass or break into the top 4? not likely, so what to do?. push more and more private money into the club and end up like leeds? or settle for mid table and hopefully get a crack at europe every know and then? I’d settle for the later knowing my team is safe.
39 Michael, Glasgow // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:15
Harrier, fair comment. And I remember the excitement in the ground when you beat Barca. Aiden McGeady samples that every year with Celtic. He may have to play at Hamilton and Falkirk but it does have it’s compensations. Why won’t the average English fan accept that?
40 Faustino // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:18
Glasgee fans…look your a decent side and yes due to the wonderful SP you get in the champs league every year, but howay…I think it’s shown every time we play you, friendly or not, there isnt a huge gulf in class. And realsitically, given the luck you’s score in Europe every year, pretty much everyone in the top 14 of the premiership could do as well as Celtic in the champs league!
Every side worth its salt has it’s historic victories in the Champs league my friends, it just so happens that due to your attoricous league your given the chance to gun for them every year.

Faustino, keep telling yourself that when your watching Newcastle toil against Wigan next season, while we’re beating the likes of AC Milan again. The EPL is horribly overhyped, overpraised and over-populated with mercenaries, quite a lot of them at St James’s.
43 yer man // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:23
NUFCAL-
Believe me the kid McGeady is good, excellent in fact, not only did he win the scottish players of the year awards he was Celtics main man in europe too. Only better things are going to come from him, maybe he never will play in another league to prove this to the arrogant fans some english clubs have. Take Larsson and what he showed he could do after celtic after he had passed his peak. Some players fair better in different clubs and different leagues so i think its unfair to rate someones potoential in a league he hasnt played in. Forlan too for example dud at man u, top scorer in europe the following year at villareal.
44 harrier // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:23
Don’t worry DC - Chimbonda hardly fits our transfer policy in the slightest. 29 year old injury prone fullback? I doubt that we would do that - it would be pointless with Beye and Geremi already there.
45 Ciaran // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:24
NUFCAl - that youtube vid was a selection from the first few months of last season. He’s been with Celtic for quite a few years. As I said, the players of Milan, Barca etc rightly praise him. That’s the level he’s at. You, though, accuse him of a lack of ambition for not being interested in midtable mediocrity at SJP. Laughable.
46 paul // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:24
agnetha .. whether celtic play in a lower standard of league is irrelevant .. my opinion on football is still the same .. we can all recognise a good player when we see one..
wtf have your mob ever done that should make us think you know about football?
your hanging onto the coat tails of good teams like manu, arsenal .. being in the same geographical location as these teams doesnt make yours a good team.
your inter-toto-the-dog standard!
and youve got some cheek into the bargain slating one of europes best young prospects as a mere one trick pony playing in a sub standard league.
ask people who work in football .. and they know talent whenthey see it.
your ar$e cheeks are obvioulsy affecting your eyesight. as i said unplumb your cranium from your epl rear end and you might actually see that players outside your bling league are actually good players.
hope you dont fall too hard when youre getting off your high horse.

Disappointing to see some negative comments about McGeady from some of my fellow Mags. The fact that he has decided to stay at “Paradise” and enjoy Champion League football and actually compete for silverware should be applauded. He could probably have enhanced his bank account quite considerably by moving south of the border, but decided not to take that option.Football has entered an era where it seems to be all about MONEY, and not about loyalty. What a refreshing change-TOP MAN!!.I hope he has a great season for the Celts, as he is indeed,a Class Act!!.

Fernando-Abba-Queen (as in dancing)-Agnetha are all abba references. Hello again Fernando. Nice to see you chipping in on our side.
I didn’t think we were still in for McGready. Might have been a good buy, but this whole “adapting to the premier league” thing may have caused a problem. It hasn’t worked with Scottish players that much in recent yearrs, not the way it used to anyway.
I wouldn’t have been disappointed if he’d come our way, Keegan rates him after all, but I would have been sceptical.

Just because we don’t get someone doesn’t mean he is any less capable, it maybe that we lost interest and signed someone else or it maybe that we did not value him as high as his club.

Pity, the wee lad was playing some really good football. He would have been a good signing. We probably would have lost him to Sunderland if he was wanting to leave but he would have been a really good signing. He’s a really hard worker, the improvement in his game over just one season is amazing. He went from being a selfish wee lad who never looked up, passed too late, did too many tricks..etc to a very smart hard working player, who looks up, doesn’t showboat, looks for the best option, stays on his feet for as long as he can, he wouldn’t try and go it alone like he would have the season before and the amount of goals he scored this season and set up is unbelievable.
The dramatic massive difference we’ve seen in just one season is staggering and he hasn’t even got anywhere near his peak. He didn’t get Scottish player of the year award, Players Player of the Year award and Celtic player of the year award a long with 2 other small player of the year awards for nothing. I don’t see why people are relieved we didn’t sign him. He would have been a great signing and definitely better then anything we have. He would have really sparked the team. When he gets the ball there’s usually only one way of stopping him and that’s by fouling him.
I’d suppose you’d have to be watching him play for Celtic and Ireland to see what a transformed players he’s become in just one season. He was amazing and when teams finally coped how good he had become he was double marked, which played to Celtics advantage as well because it opened up space. Some might and have said oh it’s only the SPL, not great players in there, of course they’d stick two guys on him and such but
the fact that he had 2 Barca players marking him in the CL says it all. His mentally and physically strong, the amount of grief he gets from some of the Scottish sides and he doesn’t even flinch. He was in scintillating form last season and he was no where near his peak and he’s 22 years old.
Why wouldn’t we want him?? He was a realistic buy, and not some washed up overrated has been, or some big name demanding big wages. How could we possibly get any better then him??

Thank god for that! He wouldn’t last 5 mins in the english prem

He looks about 14! If we’d signed him we would have lost him whenever he needed to take the weekend off to study for exams or gone off on school trips!

p.s - oh great, another long argument on here from rival fans!
I personally believe that if Celtic and Rangers were in the Prem they would probably be finishing between 8th to midtable (certainly well out of the top 4) but anyway….nothing so ugly and pointless as rival fans bickering!
I think we would have been very pleased to have signed McGeady – as Celtic fans are pleased he’s extended his contract with them – though having said that I don’t think we need a wide player so much as a central mf or two. Maybe if Zog goes, but there will be other winger options if so.

Got a bit ridiculous hasn’t it lads? My dad’s bigger than your dad… knew it would. Celtic play in Scotland, Newcastle play in England, that’s the way it is. If Celtic got access to the English money they’d be a top side in the EPL. They don’t. Instead they win the league every year and play in the Champions League. Aiden’s playing in a good team who he happens to support and is happy. Now he’s apparently rubbish because it’s the SPL. What a load of nonsense.
Celtic are a very good team in a poor league. Newcastle are an at best average side (sorry lads but it’s true) in a very good league.
Get over it.
Well done Aiden and good luck for next year.

Thanks for that Hamas.
Come on lads it was just a bit of banter. Don’t be ashamed. TBH if Man U fans turned up here I’d argue they were a poor side too!

Michael - alot of teams from poor european leagues would be good if they had the money from the EPL, as they could buy better players! Just think he would be another stilian petrov

Delighted Aiden Mc G has signed a new contract with the Celts and the best has yet to come - no doubt about it. I like Newcastle Utd and their great fans and would love to see them win a trophy someday and break up 3 team old boys club at the top of the EPL.
