Newcastle Offered German Torsten Frings

July 17th, 2008 · 113 Comments

The Evening Chronicle has a report today that Newcastle United have been given the chance to sign top German midfielder Torsten Frings.

Torsten Frings - German International offered to Newcastle

We’re always suspicious when we are offered players, and Frings is not the type of player the club is trying to sign this summer.

He turns 32 years old in November, but there’s no doubt he’s still a first class player, and while we are generally after younger players, he could well do a job for us these next 2-3 seasons.

It’s hard for a young side these days to do really well in the Premier league, and maybe Kevin needs to sign one or two older players, for short term use, if we are really after 5th place next season.

The Chronicle is reporting that Frings’ agent spoke to Newcastle’s Executive Director of Football Dennis Wise yesterday, and offered him the 31-year-old Werder Bremen star, who can operate anywhere across midfield.

Frings has played 77 times for Germany, so he’s obviously a good player, no doubt about that, but we feel the sticking point, even if Kevin wanted to sign him, will be his wages.

It’s exactly what owner Mike Ashley has said he doesn’t want - older stars coming to the club and getting huge wages, while they’re in the twilight of their career, and have already had their best days.

That’s one way to look at it - the other is that our youngsters can learn from somebody so experienced, and he could do a job for us in the next couple of seasons.

We don’t have the time to wait until our young players develop, which they will, if we want to get straight back into Europe.

If we were pushed on this, we think Newcastle will politely decline the offer, and that may be the right decision, given the emphasis on reducing the wage bill.

However, there is also a decent case to be made for getting him on-board at the club, unless we are confident there are other good players we can bring in during the summer.

Frings isnt on ‘huge’ wages, sign him! He is awesome.

  • 3 gorskino10 // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:06

Mixed feelings he is a good player but not worth much due to his age.
At 32 he will join Butt,Geremi type of players which is NOT what we want we need young fast players all of what Frings isn’t also i feel he would command too much wages so not worth it,but if we sign other young players like another 3/4 and then sign him and he is willing tobe on 30/40 k then thats an ok signing but dont he play Jonas Guhtierez posision??

  • 4 harrier // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:07

Maybe we are in contact with Werder about another player of theirs ;)

  • 5 Faustino // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:08

dude played with a broken rib didnt he? He’s a geordie…sign him!

  • 6 Taiwantoon // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:10

The chance to sign a player who is capped 77 times for Germany doesn’t come very often. Would love to see him in black & white if the rumour is true, but doubt it.

  • 7 reillers // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:11

What?? Sign him!! He was good for Germany in the Euro’s he’s kept them in so many matches they should have lost.
I don’t care if he’s not a wee lad, he’s a bloody good player. He’s good and has the experience to go a long with it. When will this club ever learn that you can’t get cheap, experienced, very good young players, they don’t exist, and the one or two you might find would be with the likes of Man U. We’re not going to get any better then Frings. Sign him.

  • 8 indian toon // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:11

CAN SCORE LONG RANGE GOALS ! SIGN HIM !! :)

  • 9 gorskino10 // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:15

Oh i hope were in for Boubacar Sanogo or Petri Pasanen or Ronaldo Rodrigues AKA Naldo.
Ive looked around to find his wages and aint seen much on it,

  • 10 neeraj // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:15

man if there was ever a player after ballack that i would love newcastle to sign
    it would be frings
great player can cross well, is tough, good at long range shooting and defends well

dont care if he is 32
    germans last upto 36-37
    ex- matthius, schnieder, effenberg etc

    so please sign him

  • 11 valle // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:15

He is a really good player and if it is true that we rejected him then we truly are run by a bunch of abes.

  • 12 Ben_BKK // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:16

Seb Larsson has supposedly hit out at David Gold (Birmingham chairman or something like that) for saying he wouldn’t be allowed to move. Could show that he wants to move to us after all?

Also Sunderland’s bid for Dorin Goian has supposedly broken down, and we’ve now been linked with him. 6ft5 centre-half, could be the physical presence we need in the centre of defence. However at 27, may be too old for Keegan’s plans…what do people think?

  • 13 beye the great // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:16

i cant believe we rejected this player not only is he a committed defensive player but actually not bad at attacking either so what if he is nearly 32 though whilst i am 100 % behind the youth policy there should be exceptions to the rule especially as we need to do well now and it will take a while for the young players to be good enough to help us get where we want to be

  • 14 agnetha // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:17

Frings- one of germanys top players at the euros. If he is being offered to us, he will be getting offered all over the place. Agents still think that we will pay top wages and transfer fees so throw there players at us. Long gone are those wonderful days and now i wake up to signings like guthrie and average players rejecting us for shite teams in crap leagues abroad.

To top off my anger my spud supporting mate has just text me to say they are in for Arda.

  • 15 WesToon // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:17

Good, solid player, too injury prone & too old for Ashleys taste,im sure!!

  • 16 broon ale // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:18

alan oliver story,, therefore load of bullshine.

if we were offered him how would that slack jawed buffoon know about it.

why would the club allow him to print the story and run the risk if allerting potential suitors!

he done the same thing last month by saying we were offered baptista!

    absolute load of border dash!

    alan oliver is a mackem

  • 17 Chennai Toon // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:19

Class player………great addition to our team……

  • 18 Shwanufc4life // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:19

Another showing on how pathetic Ashley and co have become. Refusing to sign a world class player because he is 31, yet we have no problem playing Nicky Butt in midfield.

The clubs a joke at the moment. And you say our target is 5th? HAHAHA. top half would be an incredible achivement.

  • 19 Michael // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:20

    I bet this isn’t true.

  • 20 agnetha // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:20

    too old ….

  • 22 scotty // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:22

we will only be gazumped by a bigger club so don’t get excited - he still is a quality player though, and if you asked me to choose between frings and aimar - i’d choose frings everytime….

  • 23 ToonTimbo // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:22

We are idiots regecting him!! He is imense and give our youths someone to learn off and help develop!! Who cares he is 32?? Paul Scholes is older than that and does a great job at united!! Wot an idea…. Scholes anyone?? :D

  • 24 ACD // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:23

Probably another bullsh*t story but would be amazing if we could get him !

  • 25 Ben_BKK // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:23

broon ale, do you mean balder dash? :P

  • 26 figsdad // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:24

    well wait and see…

    agree anal does talk shite…

  • 27 gorskino10 // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:24

Of course it aint true why would Werder let him go, all i know is he knows hes on his last legs and his contract is up in Jan 09 where he sign for free so they are trying to offer him to any kinda big clubs and ask for like 7 million or something stupid.

  • 28 micepie // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:25

I can’t remember EVER a club being “offered” a player and that club taking up the offer. I don’t see why they shouldn’t, necessarily, but that always seems to be the way!

  • 29 agnetha // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:28

micepie- middelsboro were offered emerson and i remember alan sugar was offered klinsmann. theres 2 off the top of my head.

  • 30 Sun'lun's Burnin' // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:28

    Sign him up!

gorskino10 - frings is mainly a CM, Gurittez is a winger

  • 31 broon ale // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:28

aye,, balder dash! to be honest. i pinched the saying from mario from big brother. never heard of it before that so had know idea what it meant or how to spell it.

    it sounds funny though..

for those of you saying the club are mugs for turning him down.

Alan oliver made that up, just as he did with baptista!

i am sure the club would welcome frings and baptista if they were actually offered to us on reasonable terms!

when was the last time oliver had a quote from a current newcastle player.

he copys stories from the official website and rings rob lee and john beresford for quotes.

he has no access anymore and therefore has no idea who newcastle are after.

there no chance on earth the club would allow him to print that story!

    they give him nothing!

he shat on his own doorstep a long long time ago

  • 32 agnetha // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:31

wonder if anal oliver is on facebook? might waste half an hour!

  • 33 Nick Dryden // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:31

Frings is the very last thing we need. At 32 he’s a very short term option and I thought short termism is something we are trying to get away from.
Very, very worried if we let Krul go. He could be the best keeper in the world. Even at 20, he is far better than Given and Harper put together.
I hope Given doesn’t go on too long like Shearer di after his best years and block a promising youngster coming through. Krul is the real deal.

  • 34 broon ale // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:33

aye alan oliver is on facebook under the name of agnus oliver.. there is a picture of him wearing a ladys frock made from blue owl feathers.

just felt like being rabdom there!

  • 35 tom tomb // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:36

It is bollocks, the email was sent to John Gibson offering him a fringe. Tis all a load of border dash.

  • 36 neeraj // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:37

    @ Nick Dryden

he has solid 4yrs left in him

no body will say that abt ballack
he has been the best player of his club both in prem. league as well as cl at 32

and he is not that far behind him

he plays in a more attacking role for his club
    and he is very good

  • 37 broon ale // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:41

john gibson has had the same hair since 1936!

  • 38 Stayed Toon // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:42

I think this would be a great signing but in ddition i think we should go for players that are not on the main stream radar. For example players like Steven Defour, Axel Witsel ,Per Ciljan Skjelbred, thomas khalenburg etc… because these sort of players would be more likely to come to Newcastle.

  • 39 Neville Brewis // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:43

Very good player but needs a short back and sides.

  • 40 Ross // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:44

paper talk, wont beleive a word of it.
if it was somehow ridiculously true, then i’d say we were idiots for turning him down because he’s a great player, a real engine.
but, i just cant beleive a word of it.
i will laugh off pretty much every single article with anal olivers name on it these days.

  • 41 tom tomb // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:44

Broon ale- gibson = Max Wall. Or Galen-planet of the apes.

  • 42 sweendog // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:45

is frings agent the same as Diego’s??

  • 43 Piers // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:46

He’s 32 whats the point…It’s not like we are going to battle for Europe next year. We need young players that will progress year after year.

  • 44 Ross // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:48

piers-to add a bit of experience and guidance into the squad for a few years, whilst also providing us with a still very fit, useful, brute of a midfielder.

  • 45 broon ale // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:48

Neville Brewis- what about gutierez and his robbie

    savage like hair.

  • 46 Ever seen a mackem in Milan? // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:48

We need some experienced heads you dont win much with a young squad like arsenal they didnt have enough experienced heads when the going got tough.

  • 47 ToonTimbo // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:49

sweendog - dunno but it be good if it was!! enquire about diegos availability while we’re at it :D

  • 48 Neville Brewis // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:51

Yes Broon ale, he could do with that too. I recommend Harkers, great job they do there. Also they still stock Brylcreem and falcon.

  • 49 Hadji // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:51

Nick Dryden….Does Gary Speed ring the bell for you, even if he has maximum 2 years of full steam we still need him if we wanna qualify for Europe this season.

  • 50 Aussie Dave // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:55

surely with our current state in midfield we wouldnt be stupid enough to reject a player of this quality and experience.

    must not be true

  • 51 broon ale // Jul 17, 2008 at 14:57

lets forget about frings shall we lads..?

alan oliver done the same with baptista last month and nothing happend.

truthfully, if we were offered those 2 players I am certain the club would accept them.

we would all be very excited too.

we need players to make difference to our squad.FRINGS is good but at 32 is in the same line like geremi and butt.we need something different.we need to spend money if we want to compete.NOT ONLY TALKING

  • 55 Nick Dryden // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:01

    Hadji,

is / was a very good player, but
Frings is not going to get us in to Europe!!
With the Aimar deal going down I wonder if D’Allesandro could be an option?
Who knows what KK will do: 442 / 433 / 343 / diamond midfield with 2 up front. As things stand with no additions, this team below wouldn’t be the worst in terms of youth and experience.

    Krul
    Beye Taylor Faye Enrique
    LuLua Milner NZogbia Guttierez
    Owen Martins

  • 56 paul p // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:06

  • 59 Kaler // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:08

What a crock of shoyte. How would Oliver know about it, whats his source?? Liar. Mackem. Twat.

If it were true we would have to be stupid to turn him down, a few older players are needed in a team of young developing players. Arse had a squad of young guns and they bottled it, Man U had the right mix and they won the PL and CL.

  • 60 WesToon // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:09

just a reality check maxm of bundesliga have been top performers of their clubs in recent yrs

    klinsmann
    ballack
    hleb
    rosicky
    santa cruz(was bayern’s reserve striker)
    hamann
    and list goes on

if this story has any truth
then we have made the blunder of the season…….

  • 62 filthy mag // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:09

Nick, I like your thinking on that squad. It allows for more creative play from Milner and Zoggy. Lualua has got some wicked fast pace that both Jimmy and Zoggy can match. Of course this would mean that Owen would have to either sit up towards the goal or run more as Martins has the pace needed to flow with this fast attack stance.

    Still, interesting thought.

  • 63 Taiwantoon // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:10

    @Nick Dryden

I think I’ve read somewhere that D’Allsandro is about to sign for a big european team, can’t recall which one tho…

About Krul, I think it would be very worrying if he is really leaving for Chelsea. Will the signing kids policy work if we can not hang on to a promising 20 year old keeper?

  • 64 Kaler // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:12

    LuLua Milner NZogbia Guttierez

Nick, you not reckon this mid would cause problems for Taylor and Faye mate? We saw what happened when they didn’t have a decent mid in front of them last season, Zog isn’t going to get back and help out and I can’t imagine Jonas or LuaLua are ones for tracking back. Milner would but lacks experience there and is still more attacking minded. You think we should go without a DM?

  • 82 robertsa // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:40

dont believe a word that we have been offered him. so angry at everyone at nufc should have been so simple to get aimar. terrible day for me linked with chimbonda and warnock both shite and now bollocks aboot frings.

  • 83 NUFCAl // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:45

‘LuaLua Milner NZogbia Guttierez’. Whoever put that midfield is an IDIOT.

Frings is basically a better Nicky Butt, and about the same age. If he was going to be on small wages I’d get him to boost the numbers, but as someone else (think it might have been Nick Dryden) rightly said, he’s a short term option and we don’t need that right now.

Oh, and the story’s pebbledash anyway because Anal was behind it. He’s a shame to the name Alan - good job we have the Shearers to balance it out.

  • 84 Faustino // Jul 17, 2008 at 15:45

How would have been simple for Gods sake?

He was 95% signed to Benfica by the time we’d been accused of being in for him.

and what crazy ass logic is it we dont need a short term fix to our midfield? Have you seen our squad. Short term fix would be heaven right now!

  • 85 aprilthaw // Jul 17, 2008 at 16:05

This story is probably nonsense but Frings definitely has the second best name in football. If we sign Frings and Ulises de la Cruz we’ll be unbeatable!

  • 86 Matthew Tom // Jul 17, 2008 at 16:14

I can’t stand Germany. I really can’t stand Frings. And we want younger players.

    But…

Frings is a LOT better than Butt, Geremi, Barton, or any of our other CMs and he has a good 4 years in him.

    Get him.

  • 87 sheareralan // Jul 17, 2008 at 16:18

    what a joke

  • 88 LondonToon // Jul 17, 2008 at 16:22

Frings is different class, even if he is getting on a bit. There’s no way this is true, but if it is, he would be a great signing, and Newcastle would be mad to turn him down. Him and Ballack for Germany are about as good as it gets in the middle of the park.

  • 89 euanpolo // Jul 17, 2008 at 16:26

If I was Dennis Wise I would have biten their hands off with this kind of offer. Frings is pure class and was probably one of the best players in the German team at Euro 08. Age isn’t everything.

  • 90 oliver // Jul 17, 2008 at 16:26

    Bet we finish 13.

  • 91 NUFCAl // Jul 17, 2008 at 16:30

That’s true, Frings doesn’t play like a 32 year old - but there’s little point in discussing this story at length because it’s blatantly not true.

The trouble is, we havent got An arsene Wenger and we will be neck deep in the brown stuff if he dosent sign some experienced quality that the younger lads can look up to and learn from.

    Frings is 32, so what.

He is still a world class midfielder regardless of his age.

If this dross activity in the transfer market continues untill the deadline, where will the ‘i love Mike Ashley’ crew be?

  • 95 ronaldeano // Jul 17, 2008 at 17:17

Weather it be Frings, Aimar or whoever, we need experience to get us into Europe next season

  • 96 dcbashore // Jul 17, 2008 at 17:21

Frings would be an excellent acquisition. One of those players that you would get three or four good years out of, then thank them profusely for their service when they hang ‘em up. May even help you win a trophy somewhere along the lines.

Unfortunately I don’t believe a word of this rumor. But let’s consider that just because Ashley wants to build the club for the future doesn’t necessarily mean that all we’re going to buy is young prospects.

Although part of me wants dreads rooting for the player who handballed out a tying goal for the U.S. in the quarters in the ‘02 World Cup, I have to admit that I do think he could help the squad and would be a good fit with all the youth for a year or two.

  • 98 ronaldeano // Jul 17, 2008 at 17:30

Ashley may want to build the club for the futre but what happens NOW?

We have a very small squad.

  • 99 DanToon // Jul 17, 2008 at 17:32

BTW Matias Fernandez is quality, i worked in Valencia for a bit last year and Villareal is just up the road, even the Valencia supporters said he was better than any player they had.

There is a massive mural of him in Castellon.

“The new fat, greedy owner of our club wont sign players of Frings calibre because he is greedy and he wants to win things the Arsenal way.”

It’s been a few years since Arsenal got anything. A runners-up medal in CL?

    Boro won a cup competition!!

Arsenal are good but last season missed the experience of Gilberto and losing Flamini might be the best thing that could happen to them.

Flamini layed brilliantly all season, but I’ll bet Gilberto can sort their boys out.

Frings…Top notch…When your engine’s German, everything will go perfectly for years and years.

The idea of Oliver knowing anything still amuses me. Remember Spiderman? Who saw that coming?

    NO-ONE!!

The players we sign will not be players we know about unless it’s pure co-incidence…

  • 101 Lacedaemonian // Jul 17, 2008 at 17:34

Alan Oliver’s daughter is best friends with my cousin. Sometimes bump into him at family do’s. I remember asking him once years ago about transfers etc and he was totally clueless. He tried to bluff me with “buy the paper tomorrow”. I told him that my ma buys it and I will look forward to reading the usual dull pre season training interviews. He was not best pleased with this. Think there was an interview with Bellamy in the paper the next day talking about his pre season training…………

  • 102 Patrick // Jul 17, 2008 at 17:38

    Is this even true….

  • 103 laurent32 // Jul 17, 2008 at 17:46

WE HAVE NOT BEEN OFFERED FRINGS!!!!

this is a complete and utter bullshoite story written by Mr bullshoite himself alan oliver. so before you all start slagging off the board etc for rejecting a world class player please stop. we were never offered him in the first place. alan oliver is a daft lying mackem coont.

  • 104 Ben_BKK // Jul 17, 2008 at 18:29

Ant, Gilberto is set to move to Panathanaikos, or another big Greek team…

NUFCAL it’s all opinions mate. No need to be abusive. You don’t agree with me. Fair enough I’m not calling you an idiot.
I don’t see Milner and Zog as out and out wingers, but they do work hard. Milner ideally would be payed in the hole as he is quite tricky but his strength is not crossing a ball.
I just feel that midfield would be fresh and not afraid to express themselves. Butt and Geremi are aging and using Smith effectively means playing with a man down and god knows what will happen with Barton.
I’m just saying if we can’t get quality additions like Ilner or de Jong at the right age on sensible wages, I would rather see that midfield than any of Smith, Diuff, Geremi or Barton.

laurent32 i agree i cant believe there has been over a hundered comments on this one. now the only centre mids i can think o0f that we have been linked with are Baptista and Makoun and if we get anyone of tthem it wud be a miracle.

  • 107 robertsa // Jul 17, 2008 at 19:11

if frings was being offered it wud be to a top 4 club sorry lads but you have to admit players just arent attracted to us anymore.

  • 108 maltese geordie // Jul 17, 2008 at 21:34

sign him we already lost a world class player aimar so dont lose another one ,i don t like boro ‘ be better squad than us we want to finish top four

  • 109 Tooooonie // Jul 17, 2008 at 22:15

he is VERY OLD. why we refuse to sign dunne at 28 but want to buy another nicky butt for 32 years old?

  • 110 Tommy // Jul 18, 2008 at 7:06

If it’s true, sign him. He would be invaluable..

  • 111 jonny // Jul 18, 2008 at 7:46

WE need to sign Arda turan he is a quality player the next ronaldo and hes only 21 he scores goals, he creates things, hes skillful, what can’t he do. This move would be realistic as juventus have said they are buying no more midfielders so wheres Newcastles bid. After all they were heavily linked with him just b4 Euro 2008

  • 112 Oba's Mum // Jul 18, 2008 at 7:58

we aint signing players that we have been linked to, so this is a no go, more chance of signing windass as we aint been linked to him

  • 113 Andy // Jul 18, 2008 at 8:50

y the hell have turned this guy down? If we were offered him the chances are that they wanted very little money. Also LAURENT 32, this story is in the independent so it has a very good chance of being tue. Sometimes I think that the management at Newcastle don’t have a clue. Why the hell did we only make a serious bid for aimar whe he said he was going to join benfica? If we see a player we would like to sign, we should put a bid in, keep it private and only make it public when complete like we did with guti and guthrie. Like if we want humberto suazo, we should put a bid in cos he is gonna be in demand.
