Newcastle Still Looking For Left Back

July 18th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 87 Comments

The Evening Chronicle is reporting today that Kevin Keegan will step up the search for a new left-back.

jose-enrique-in-play.JPG

Jose Enrique - needs somebody in to push him at left back

Because we haven’t gone after more obvious targets such as Wayne Bridge, Nicky Shorey and even John Arne Riise, we think Kevin may see Enrique as the starter next season, so he may be looking for a youngster to come in to give Jose competition.

Not that Jose is an old fella at just 22, but that maybe why Newcastle seemed interested in Liverpool’s 19 year-old Emiliano Insua.

We need another left back at the club to provide cover and competition for Jose Enrique, who looked a very decent youngster when he played towards the end of last season for Kevin Keegan, and he was learning all the time.

Enrique is the only left-back at Keegan’s disposal – and while we have young Charles N’Zogbia who can play there, he’s wasted at the back, and we’re sure Kevin will want to play the Frenchman in a more attacking role next season.

Blackburn’s Rovers new boss Paul Ince was not keen to let Steve Warnock leave for Tyneside, so the search continues. We think a very good youngster could be able to do the next season, and presumably he’ll only get better.

But we shouldn’t forget that David Edgar can do more than a useful job at left back too, and he can really play anywhere along the back-line.

We certainly need to start bringing in some defensive reinforcements very soon.

As we mentioned yesterday Slavia’s Prague’s 20-year-old Marek Suchy is one such player who may attract Newcastle, he’s a central defender, and he can also play in midfield too. And we’ve also been linked with 6′5″ central defender, Dorin Goian of Steaua Bucharest.

Sunderland has been pursuing the player, but reports suggested yesterday they were not willing to meet the transfer price. The 27 year-old would seem to be a good buy for the club.

As far as left back is concerned, we have absolutely no idea who’ll we’ll get in, since if we were to fancy Nicky Shorey, surely we would have made a move for him long before now.

Comments welcome.

We need some sort of back up, for sure. Nicky Shorey would have been good for first team and Enrique for back up, perhaps a waste though :S

  • 2 LondonToon // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:47

I think Warnock would be a very astute signing. Young, English, talented and wouldn’t cost too much. I’d pay up to £4m for him. He also wouldn’t spit the dummy out if Enrique was sometimes chosen ahead of him.

  • 3 Will // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:50

Good point mate, Shorey would be liable to do just that. I like Warnock too, well established youngster.

  • 4 Hammy // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:50

I’d stick with Enrique, Shorey is over rated, I’d go for a more experienced full back as cover for Jose although who would come on those terms is beyond me….

  • 5 DC Magpie // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:51

    Constant Djapka

  • 6 Dirk // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:52

buy insua, enrique is our first choice lb in my opinion he did a gr8 job last season against some gr8 players and held his own. if anything we jus need a youngster to come in a push him a little. and if we didn get ne1 in i wouldn b upset, the midfield is our priority at them minute after that is sorted then we should look at sorting out the little things.

  • 7 Hammy // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:52

Maybe a utility guy who could play anywhere across the back 4, Hughes maybe or would that be a step backwards?

  • 8 Dave // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:53

Personally I would take Shorey, and use a rotation policy between him and Enrique and see who performs better.

    Taken from BBC Gossip Column:

Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul “wouldn’t join Sunderland even if there was an earthquake”, according to his agent. (AFP news agency, 1342 BST)

  • 9 Dirk // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:55

if we bought and experienced lb they would more or less demand first choice. and i personally think enrique could develop into the best lb in the prem. best to give him his chance and only buy another young lb to challenge.

  • 10 harrier // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:57

Guys what about bassong? The guy on trial? He plays LB as well as CB

  • 11 MAG PIE // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:58

Edgar should be used as cover for Enrique. He won’t get a look in at CB with Taylor, Faye, Cacapa, NEW SIGNING ahead of him. We don’t need a new lb.

  • 12 Hammy // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:58

Younes Kaboul seems a sensible lad…

  • 13 Michael // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:06

Id like to keep Enrique as a starter. I really liked him last season. As everyones saying I think just someone to give him competition would be good, definitely not a priority though.

  • 14 indian toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:07

GET FRANK QUEDRUE , a decent left back and a attack minded one ! :)

  • 15 Will // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:08

Good point Harrier. I like Dave’s suggestion about rotating Shorey and Enrique but i fear even Enrique may grumble at it.

Bassong may prove to be useful too, yeah.

  • 16 Indian toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:10

how about giving ben tozer a chance !

  • 17 Black and White Blood // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:11

Sorry - KK’s not looking for a left back - Mr AO thinking that he is important once again!

If KK had wanted a left back, he would have had one of those above by now. The Chronicle, like most of the press have no idea who or what we are after, these are merely names and stories pulled out of the air to sell papers. END OF.

Who as well as the type of player we get will only be known once we’ve signed them - I think this is the best thing the Toon have done for ages…

  • 18 indian toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:12

i think we should all stick to nufc.co.uk then!

  • 19 Black and White Blood // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:14

Oh… also - IMO, Enrique was awesome 2nd half the season, with him suggesting the best is yet to come…

    Come on Enrique!!!!

  • 20 Masa // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:16

We offered 2 million pounds for a first choice english left back at a premier league club..how stupid or naive are the people running are club?

  • 21 Black and White Blood // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:18

@ Indian Toon, now I didn’t suggest that we should stop all this banter, I’m merely trying to get across the point KK has given the press zero, and it is driving them nuts!

  • 22 Davies // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:20

Happy with Wor Jose to be honest.

Edgar needs to start making more first team appearances. If he can play anywhere across the back line, he should always be on the bench at the very least.

I still think we need another versatile defender who can do the same thing and we’ll be sorted.

I like Faye, but I think we need somebody more commanding in that spot. He and Taylor are likely to be first choice at CB, so one of them needs to learn to start shouting. Of course, they’ll need to learn to read the game a bit better first.

  • 23 Gooderz // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:20

Keegan may not be looking for an out and out LB, but we do need another option there. Torosidis would be a good utility signing covering RB,LB,RM,LM and DM.

  • 24 Leo // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:23

maybe todays signing *fingers crossed* will be an attacking left back

cant do no defending players, they arnt exciting to watch, well the ones in keegans teams no doubt will again try to put that myth to bed haha

  • 25 Black and White Blood // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:23

@ Tom Toon - Havy any info on this guy Shikabala - looks awesome on youtube…

  • 26 TrueMag // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:24

I agree let tozer be back up for enrique why waste the limited funds wev got and hamper the progress of a promising youngster

  • 27 Black and White Blood // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:25

    @Gooderz - I agree

  • 28 ELFER // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:25

Think also that a LB should not be our no 1 priority signing at the moment!

  • 29 agnetha // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:26

When did we make a bid for Warnock? I missed that one. That would have been a shocking signing.

  • 30 number9 // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:29

enrique has all the qualities to become a brilliant long term left back. yes he needs cover but there is no point spending to much we need that for a class premier league CB

  • 31 Dave76 // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:29

Edgar.. Tozer.. If not these then why do we have them?

  • 32 Black and White Blood // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:36

We need ACM before any other position - I would love to see Diego. Would never come here I know, but I can dream!

  • 33 number9 // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:42

Yes we need both ACM and CB but the priority has got to be someone better than Faye

  • 34 Spyro goodbye-0 // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:49

check out the last couple of comments on the sebastien larsson post

  • 35 Paul // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:50

LB will be a position where nufc go against there youth policy, they will bring in someone with experience, who will be there to act as a sort of tutor to enrique, someone with premier league, possibly european competition experience, as hammy said, hughes is a possibility, as he cana lso cover other defences, and even midfield positions

  • 36 Walter // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:51

How long before Mr Dreamalot puts the Newcastle want to sign Chiles Carlos Villanueva on his blog.

  • 37 agnetha // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:54

Chimbonda has gone to sunderland. At least that will stop the links to us.

  • 38 Carlos // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:58

Please don’t mention Edgar at left back that I still get shivers when I think how out of depth and slow he looked when he filled in at LB.

He may have improved, but I don’t think he should be anywhere else apart from CB, that is clear.

  • 39 Andy // Jul 18, 2008 at 14:59

when we first got enrique i was quite happy, but then i saw him play-he was absolutley apalling! but it seems as though hes come into his own now which is good- i think we should get a top quality championship left back as cover somebody like Neil collins from wolves-just a thought. If not get a reserve from another team from the premier league maybe somebody like justin hoyte or somebody like kevin kilbane.

  • 40 Tom_Toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:00

    Justin Hoyte?!?!?!?

He isnt good enough to cover me at LB at the park!

  • 41 agnetha // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:05

So he is good enough for wenger but not tomtoon. Get over yer self lad.

  • 42 Paul // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:07

he aint cover at the arse, how often do you see him playing? if theres an injury he wouldnt be the instant choice replacemnt, so there fore not good enough

  • 43 agnetha // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:10

he may not be good enough for the arse but would argue that he is good enough for us.

  • 44 Tom_Toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:21

He’s not even 4th choice at the arse, wenger would rather play someone out of position than play hoyte.

Poeople infront of Hoyte for RB:

    Sagna
    Eboue (who is awful)
    Toure
    Gallas

  • 45 agnetha // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:25

guthrie wasnt 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th choice for liverpool but some on here think he is the nuts.

  • 46 DC Magpie // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:28

Belleti is available for those thinking we need some experience at LB, he’s considering joining Aimar at Benfica.

On a different not, and I’ll probably get slated for saying it, Hossam Ghaly is available for free.

Now I hate the idea of taking Spurs rejects but the reason they are rejecting this guy is cuz he threw their shirt to the ground, nice move!

I was actually really impressed with his ability while he was on loan at Derby. I say bring him in, he has the creative passing ability we need and he’s be cheap as chips.

  • 47 Tom_Toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:28

They have, Macherano (best DM in the world), Alonso (best long passer in he world), Gerrard (best box-to-box cm in the world) and Lucas (one of the best cm prospects in the world), all of whom CM is their natural position infront of Guthrie.

Whilst Hoyte has Sagna and Eboue nfront of him who’s natural position is RB nd Eboue is bluddy awful!

  • 48 Tom_Toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:29

I do like Ghaly to be honest DC magpie, you sure he’s available on a free?

  • 49 DC Magpie // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:30

agnetha KK rates him so that’s good enough for me! He also said he sees him as becoming a holding mid player but will probably be more box-to-box for us, at least initially.

The Bolton fans liked him, the Scouse fans like him I think it’s only Rafa who doesn’t and surely that’s only cuz he doesn’t speaka tha spanish!

  • 50 DC Magpie // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:34

Tom…Well I think he’s still under contract but they want rid and I doubt they’d want much.

They had agreed a 3M fee with B’ham last year only for him to pull out at the last minute.

  • 51 Tom_Toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:35

I wouldnt pay over £1mil for him to be honest, i think they’d let him go at 500k.

  • 52 Azeem // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:36

  • 53 Paul // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:43

just out of interest, why did we sell huntington?? he would have made perfect cover for enrique this season, and syoung, still learning, talnted….another move by the big fat cock…what about looking into the italien league for defenders?? they play a defensive game, and alot of the best defenders in the world have come otu of italy in the past….is roberto carlos still playing football??? another idea haha…he could teachgeremi how to take a free kick if we signed hima swell…he needs to learn

  • 54 broon ale // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:44

    Paul.

    paul huntington was shite!

apologies if you are paul huntington!

  • 55 agnetha // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:45

I have only watched ghaly once in the facup game when chelsea came from 3-1 down to draw 3-3. he looked good in that game. didnt he go to birmingham then go back to spurs because he claimed bruce was making them run to much and jol didnt do that,. it was also claimed earlier in the week on sky that he was going back to an eygiptian club. i think teemu tainio would be a good signing from them.

  • 56 Paul // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:47

he may have been shite, but he was still young, and would have only been cover, also witht he extra experience he would have gained if he was still nto up to scratch we could have got more money for himt han we did, and no im not paul huntington….got a mate that met him once haha, but no…im not

  • 57 agnetha // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:47

Just reading through all the comments today and it looks as though we have all excepted that it is bargain buys only this window.

  • 58 robertsa // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:51

we do need another left back like. we missed out on riise. So I hope we get konchesky or rat. but I also want insua to add to the young talent. sky sports says we are in talks with anton ferdinand.
looking good ferdinand and taylor at the back. 2 guranteed england future stars.

  • 59 Tom_Toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:52

Yep and Tainio, but hes quite injury prone and already 29, whilst Ghaly has only just turned 26, Ghaly has a suprising bit of creaitivty and can go on surging runs.

+ Tainio is probably going to the scum.

  • 60 Tom_Toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:53

Taylor and Ferdinand at the back? That is shocking mate, what planet are you on!

  • 61 harrier // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:54

agnetha - they are not looking for bargain buys - they want players better than we already have - but they want the ones that nobody has heard of so they don’t have to pay as much ;)

PS - see my apology for being harsh in my last post towards you in the previous thread.

  • 62 agnetha // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:54

  • 65 Paul // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:56

we will not sign anton ferdinand, have you learnt nothing of late, the media are makign all of the signings up, because KK wont let a word slip, we will probably sign a CD, but i doubt it will be ferdinand, and ferdidnads abit shit anyway, could do better, and im sure KK will do better

  • 66 broon ale // Jul 18, 2008 at 15:57

gm.. its been discussed earlier today.

anywhere you see us being linked with a player, simply smile and move on with your life.

it wouldnt not be in tune with our new transfer policy to allows leaks to reach the newspapers or websites.

all transfers are now to be completed under a cloak of secrecy

  • 67 GM // Jul 18, 2008 at 16:00

  • 69 broon ale // Jul 18, 2008 at 16:02

aye, its obvious the press know nothing.

it wouldnt be a surprise if the aimar exclusive the daily mirror published was a blatant fabrication designed to satisfy their own small minded agenda.

they are probably very bitter about knowing nothing!

  • 70 Paul // Jul 18, 2008 at 16:05

i miss sir bobbys team, apart from bramble, if KK had taken over when sir bobby got sacked, newcastle would be in the sky by now, but no doubt KK will take us back to the top with sum new signings, aparently in the nxt couple of days he will have new signigns, implying more than one

and as for us ??? typical nufc probably dont give him a second look, same as lescott all those people saying he wasnt good enough for nufc (and there was plenty of them saying why should nufc sign championship players) well they look pretty stupid now dont they.

  • 81 AndyNUFC // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:15

We have Edgar and Tozer who are both too young to demand a long term run in the squad. Tozer surely at 18 is a fine age to be a pit part player. Enrique does a good job… time to let Edgar and Tozer in on the team?

  • 82 The Entertainers // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:37

Warnock yes. He does fit the mould

  • 83 Paul // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:40

well said andyNUFC it is a good time, however we could use an experienced player to cover in case of long term injury, and preferably someone who could cover at right back aswell, in case beye gets an injury, also dont forget our young hungarian tamas kadar, he can play left back, and has appeared for hungary under 21s, and has experience of competitive matches for his former side, remembering when he came to the club he was looking to break into th e first team

  • 84 Spyro // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:48

Theres got to be someone available for under £2m. (salary cap) out there.
Who will be willing to play for food and lodgings, hey cant afford to pay those high wages, ask Aimar.
Anybody check out the khazakstan league, believe Drogba intends to play there next season
gotta be some decent LB`s, right !

  • 86 WIGAZ // Jul 18, 2008 at 22:01

Lets be honest if we’re not willing to pay players the wages we wont get any real quality in! i’m gettin sick of us missing out on players! (unless we were never after him) ever since MA took over we’ve become a laughin stock! there was once a time when we would pay whatever it took to secure the quality players but those days are long gone! i say MA sell up & leave, you have no idea what it takes to make a success of a football club, We are not Man u with a youth team of giggs, beckham etc so you’re not goin to able to save money by putting kids in, either give the king some cash or sell to some bloody shake who will! i’m becoming seriously scepticle about next season now, our squad is so small & if we dont add serious quality we’ll in the S##t!

On another note how bout Baines for lb! good player, unless he wants a decent wage then the fat man wont pay up penny pinching twat!!!!
