Sebastien Larsson Wants Birmingham Talks

July 18th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 86 Comments

Sebastien Larsson is one player we know Newcastle have already put in an official bid for.

seb-larsson-3.jpg

Seb Larsson - well aware that Newcastle have made bid

There are reports the 23 year-old Swede is seeking talks with Birmingham City chairman David Gold, and seems keen for a move away from St Andrews.

The Swedish midfielder has been in excellent form for the Blues, since joining them from Arsenal last year, despite their relegation season.

Birmingham Chairman David Gold has recently been quoted as saying the Swede would only leave the club “over my dead body”, but we’re not sure he can stop the Swede from leaving the club.

Larsson’s agent, Per Jonsson, has said that a number of top clubs - that include both Newcastle and Blackburn - are still interested in signing the Swedish international.

Jonsson said yesterday:

“It’s not funny to hear when Mr Gold says things like that.”

“Are we Swedes being punished because we are kind and don’t nag to leave?“Do you need to become enemies with everyone at the club to be allowed to leave?”

“He has said things like this before and still sold players anyway.”

“Maybe Birmingham will get an offer they can’t refuse. I hope it will be solved.”

Sensible words from Jonsson, and Birmingham are hardly in a strong negotiating position to keep their best players at the club.

It’s hard to keep them, when you drop down to the Championship, and most top players will have a clause in their contract, that states they will be transfered if the club does get relegated from the Premier League.

Whether he likes it or not, Gold will have to sell Larsson, if Seb wants to leave the club, which seems likely.

We just hope Newcastle are still in there for the youngster, and that we’ll try to get Larsson, even though we have recently signed another right sided midfielder recently, Argentine Jonas Gutierrez.

What do you think about this situation?

Comments welcome.

    Hmmmm - he’s coming…

  • 2 Spyro // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:08

birmingham are being mugs, let go of him for gods sake, your a crappy championship level club and Larsson is premiership quality, if they wanted to keep him they shouldn’t have hired that crappy scottish manager

  • 3 broon ale // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:10

i think the agents comments are very childish and bad practice!

if his client wants to leave he should do his job properly and go through the correct channels to make sure seb gets what he wants,. surely comenents like this serve no purpose.

as for whether seb will come..

i doubt it considering its a trasnfer saga being conducted in the public.

    very unlike our new strategy

  • 4 faustino // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:13

The board level of that club are run like Trotters inc. first Brady and now this fool.

Birmingham are dropping like a pebble down a canyon and they’re trying to deprive this kid from playing at the top level.

  • 5 natedawg // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:17

bit like the ronaldo saga but on a lot smaller scale , and larrson isn’t an arrogant tw*t. lol

  • 6 Chris // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:19

Birmingham are obviously holding out for a decent offer for the lad. If he’s Premiership class, he worth more than a couple of million. They’re a business aswell you know, we can’t expect them to give their best players away.
If he was our player and we were in the same position as Birmingham, we’d be miffed at losing him for such a small amount also!
At least make them a decent offer, and then everyones happy. That’s if we’re interested in him anyway LOL.

  • 7 Macas // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:20

If Larsson was our player we would be up in arms about it. At the end of the day he signed a contract to play for Birmingham. While i would like us to sign him, he can hardly complain.

  • 8 agnetha // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:26

Read somewhere on newsnow that both sunderland and blackburn are after him. There is a mirror journo who posts on a blackburn blog who claims fridel will go to villa today. Blackburn will take robinson as part of the bentley deal and bburn will go after larsson. I thought larsson was a left winger though where they already have pederson. Dont think the bloke is a WUM as he told everyone about the spurs players being sent home at around 4;00pm yesterday before the storyt broke. He say blackburn will have the money to outbid anyone for larsson.

  • 9 ObaFan2 // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:26

How long has Larsson left on his contract anyone know?

  • 10 ObaFan2 // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:27

If we’d been relegated I’d have expected a mass exodus tbh.

  • 11 Bosley // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:27

    It’s all agent talk.
Larsson, palys on the right or in the centre. He has about 3 years left on his contract

  • 12 CRAIGG // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:28

Birmingham will IMO be promoted this season so i dont see why they have to sell him, If they fail and are stuck in the Championship for another season or two, Then they may have to sell up like West Ham did with Carrick.

They made a lot of money through TV last season and were given £30m even after being relegated.

He signed a long term permanent contract at Brum only a year or so ago so its his fault he’s stuck there.

  • 13 gorskino10 // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:29

not worth more than 3 mill i reacon hes the same as Guthrie, and look he really didnt play that great last year for Birmingham did he.
he signed for them in 07 for a 4 year deal so goes on for a few years. Also didnt KK mention in his interview yesterday that he WILL NOT sign players in same kind of posisions like Seb is same as Jonas so there is no point we need other players first.

  • 14 Spyro // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:29

he only signed for them last yr so will be quite a while

  • 15 Spyro // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:30

Larsson isn’t really like Guthrie IMO

  • 16 Leo // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:30

hope he leaves them for us because when we played birmingham he was their best player and was causing us soo many problems until he got injured- well done nicky butt :-)

  • 17 Leo // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:32

    Whats a WUM?

  • 18 ObaFan2 // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:33

  • 21 Leo // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:37

cheers agnetha its been puzzling me for a while now and i was trying to work it out but to no avail

  • 22 Magpie // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:38

The thing is that Seb plays just as well as a central midfielder, so I truly believe that we would be an excellent signing. Because he is a very creative player and thats is what we really need.

  • 23 Anthony // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:39

dont mind him if he is cheap

but he is no better than what we have….hope we go for someone better than him

frankly, even if he is allowed to leave, he wouldnt be cheap

  • 24 bruna // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:44

good chance seb will go but not to newcastle
they will be lucky to survive this season and he will have to go thru this again, they were not much better than b,ham and there positions could easly be reversed this reason in keegan and wise one is a has been and the other a loud mouth roughneck who built his reputation by kicking taxi drivers

  • 25 Mezz // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:45

Larsson doesnt want to leave he has publically said he will stay and help the club get back up. Plus if u want him it will cost u 8mil. This story is his agent tryin to drum up business!

  • 26 agnetha // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:46

Spyro. I support La Galaxy. Thats why i post on here to see all the latest galaxy news.

  • 27 Smithy // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:46

Larsson was our player of the season by a mile, the lad is quality. All this talk of 3 or 4m for him is rubbish though. We got 5.75m for Muamba who isn’t half as good. If anyone is serious about taking him you’ll need to be looking at 6 or 7m.

I just hope he can stick it out for a year while we get promoted again and this time McLeish will keep us up comfortably.

  • 28 Spyro // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:52

are you that naive that you actually think only NUFC fans post on here?

  • 29 Dondatta13 // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:53

If the shoe was on the other foot Id expect the same battle cry from our chairman, so fair play to them for that.

However, the shoe isnt on the other foot AND they did just get relegated …

  • 30 tkblue // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:57

Put your hands in your pockets and you can have him, but I doubt you’ll be able to scrape enough cash together to even tempt a sale. Even Bolton spend more money than you.

  • 31 Beattie // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:04

Is Vito Corleone going to put in a bid?

also, anyone know if he would be any good in the center of midfield?

  • 32 Davies // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:10

I’d like to add him to our number, but it really doesn’t look like we’ll need him. Still, if KK’s interested and Seb wants to come, I’ll be happy.

I’m still waiting for that commanding central midfielder and a two footed full back that is happy to switch sides. Don’t get me wrong, I’m more than happy with Beye and Enrique, but it would certainly provide that competition KK was talking about.

Also, a big strong striker in the Viduka mould, but younger. Perhaps Zigic is the man we need to join MO and Oba upfront when Viduka gets injured again this season.

  • 33 bluenose // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:19

seb s agreat player thats why he plays for bcfc hes ours and he would never sign for a club that loses 5 1 to birmingham when we were in championship

  • 34 will_bcfc // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:27

I’d be mega disasppointed if we let Seb go for anything less than £6m.

He’s a superb little player, with great desire and superb skill. My favourite player by far and I’m not surprised Premiership teams are in for him.

Tbh I think he could play for a better team than Newcastle, but hopefully we’ll hang on to him!

  • 35 AB'hamFan // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:28

Seb’s not interested in coming to Newcastle and the Birmingham chairmen is replying to Blackburn with this article not to Newcastle. It makes me laugh this is actually a very OLD topic and it’s not been posted before now which surprised me. Seb would be around £8m and he’ll probably stay.

  • 36 Malaysian Toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:31

And I support Wollongang FC, Spyro :)

Seb Larsson is a good player and young but like gorskino10 said….if he’s a right sided midfielder don’t think KK will go for him. Not until we fill the other positions first.

  • 37 oldburyblue // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:32

When is something going to be done about these parasitic Agents? It can’t be right when they can make a fortune by stirring things up all the time in the hope of getting a cut of the transfer fee. Yes, I’m a Blues Supporter & don’t want to lose Seb..but he signed a contract willingly last year & should abide by it. IF he & his Agent inserted a relegation clause, fair enough, but if not he should accept he was 1 of the players who got us relegated so should be 1 of those “bustin a gut” to get us promoted again so that he can get his wish to play in the top Division again.

  • 38 bluenose // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:32

yous should buy readings james harper

  • 39 BORNBREDBRUMMIE // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:32

Listen georgies, If Seb goes to a club like yours, it’ll be a terrible career decision. Like most young foreign players who end up at St. Jane’s park, he go rubbish and then end up signing for a a low level spanish club like Tenerife or something.

He’s best off at St.Andrews, where he is our top player and is liked and respected by his employers and teammates alike.

  • 40 Jason Mitchell // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:33

Firstly I’m a Birmingham Fan. Larsson isa fantastic player and i’d be gutted if or when he leaves. He was rated as the top dead ball specialist in the Prem last season according to Opta. This is only a small proportion of his game.

he plays rightmidfield but in a better team he’d be awesome in the centre.

to indicate how much he’s rated a BCFC is that Pennant is half the play of Larsson.

With regard to a fee you can forget 2mill and look more south of 6mill. We sold Muamba to Bolton for 5.75mill and he has no where rear the ability of Larsson. You also need to understand that at 23 Larsson will only get better.

Newcastle are a big club but Larsson will end up playing at better teams than you (current club situation) i.e not in European picture.

Hope you have a good upcoming season without Larsson. See you next season, fingers crossed.

  • 41 Malaysian Toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 13:39

Thanks Bluenose. It’s wonderful how much free time you have to go to another clubs fan website and write stuff that will have utterly no affect on the players transfer or your club. Must feel really big doesn’t it. Wanker.

so birmingham are crappy mugs then? all this from someone who names himself after a childrens pretend dragon???are newcastle so good then that they wont ever get relegated dont count your chickens mate i can think of plenty of sides that thought they were too good to go down as for being a crappy championship level club that may be but your not far from it i dont see nufc doing much for tha last few years other than slide down the league remember you have never won anything either

Anybody seen Freddy Adu play recently? I watched him in the USA v. Spain friendly before the Euro, and he was great. I saw him, also, against Argenitna in a friendly and he was really excellent then too. Would love to see the boy come to Newcastle…

less of the agro lads and lasses please, we are all fans of the beautiful game and we dont want to tarnish it with bad behaviour…

taking away the bitching and scwobbling is something obvious, if the birmingham fans are soo hopeful of keeping him then he must be a good player they would have seen him alot more than us so if he does leave you i am hopeful it will be for us

the whole idea that he will be loyal is admirable bu unlikely it just doesnt happen these days in football lets just wait and see where he goes and leave the fighting to be done by the players on the pitch, not litrally though lol… that goes for you bowyer and dyer two times.

  • 65 Chris // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:01

Is there any need for all this childish name calling. This is one reason we nearly lost the Blog the last time.
As I said earlier, before any Brummie fans even posted, Birmingham had every right to get what Larsson is worth. I agree with the Brummies that Larsson is worth a lot more than the £2m that’s been mentioned. I also share their frustration and fears of losing one of their star players. As our top players are constantly being linked to bigger clubs.
I don’t believe we are still trying to sign him though as we’ve got Jonas and Guthrie since our initial interest. Like I say though Birmingham deserve a decent price for a decent player.
Good luck in the future Brummie fans and I hope you’s come straight back up. It’s a frustrating time of the season for us all, not knowing who’s coming or going, but it’s pointless getting involved in childish arguments.

As I said, a terrible career move moving to Newcastle, just look at Michael Owen. Why Newcastle?? Of all the clubs he could be playing at and he goes to Newcastle.. Dear oh dear…

what’s with all the abuse?! and to think Dudley’s in Birmingham when it’s in Baggies territory *smacks head*

to end this discusion - Larsson is a great player, but Jonas Gutierrez is probably better! Newcastle don’t need him and won’t buy him - especially not for £7m, which is the lowest price Sullivan and Gold would probably cash in on him for. (over their dead bodies - yeah right!!! (seen it before syndrome))

All Bluenoses have to hope to god that we can keep him - money grabbing agent Per Jonsson can go shove a Swede up his arse - and in the even that Seb leaves, some lucky club will have a teriffic player on their hands.

    That is all :)
