Edgar Starts At Right Back For Newcastle

July 19th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 93 Comments

As expected Kevin, Keegan has named a strong looking Newcastle United eleven for the game against Hartlepool United this afternoon, at Victoria Park.

kevin-keegan-returns_624322.jpg

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan fields interesting side

Nicky Butt will skipper the side today, in the absence of regular captain Michael Owen, and the former Manchester United stalwart is joined in midfield by Damien Duff, James Milner and Charles N’Zogbia – a strong combination indeed.

Shay Given returns in goal, having missed the final two months of last season because of injury, and 20 year-old Fraser Forster is the substitute, who we would expect to make his debut, probably in the second half.

Late news is that captain Michael Owen and goalkeeper Steve Harper picked up slight knocks during the week, and will not be risked today.

Newcastle will field a back four of David Edgar, Steven Taylor, Claudio Cacapa and Jose Enrique, so Edgar gets his chance, in the absence of regular right back Habib Beye.  David started his first team career at Newcastle in the right back position.

Also, this will be a chance for Brazilian center-back Claudio Cacapa to show he is much better than he looked last season, when he was prone to too many errors at the back, and often look too slow against pacy attackers.

Nigerian favorite Oba Martins, who got 10 goals last season for the side to add to the 17  he scored in his first season, is partnered in attack by Alan Smith, and Newcastle are in a 4-4-2 formation this afternoon.

We will look for Smith to have an effective game, and hopefully he can start scoring some goals.

It’s also good to see Charles N’Zogbia starting, probably in center midfield, with Damien on the left wing, and Milner in his favorite position out on the right wing.

New boy Danny Guthrie is named among the Newcastle substitutes, and would expect him to play the second half.

A number of youngsters are named on the substitutes bench, and it wouldn’t surprise us if 18 year-old Ben Tozer is given a run out at left back in the second half.

    where is micky owen ?

hope he gives milner a run out in the centre of the park .

  • 2 ToonKing // Jul 19, 2008 at 2:55 PM

lloks like KK is experimenting a little little. Zog in the middle and Cacapa is given a second chance…..i perfectly agree with that….

where’s Owen though…..and why do we have so few players……… :(

  • 3 toonfan1 // Jul 19, 2008 at 2:57 PM

i think that owen is recovering from a little knock and so is harper

  • 4 dw // Jul 19, 2008 at 2:58 PM

Owen and Harper have knocks and will not be risked today.

  • 5 nufc09 // Jul 19, 2008 at 2:58 PM

it said on ssn that owen has a slight injury so wasnt risked and harper has a slight injury aswel.

  • 6 dougnufc // Jul 19, 2008 at 2:58 PM

20min – Another corner for the visitors as Sweeney slides to nick the ball away from N’Zogbia on the left. Milner crosses but Liddle heads clear ay the near post.

16min – HARTLEPOOL GOAL (1-0): Joel Porter finds MATTY ROBSON with a clever ball in-behind the Magpies backline and the Pools winger finishes past Given with a left-footed, near post effort.

16min – United are beginning to find their feet and a move involving Smith, Milner and Duff ends with N’Zogbia seeing a low drive saved by Lee-Barrett with Martins lurking in case of any rebounds.

14min – Humphreys is unable to prevent a corner as he disposses Smith only for the ball to skid away off the greasy surface. N’Zogbia takes and McCunnie heads behind at the far post for another flag-kick. This time it’s Milner who crosses but again Pools clear.

10min – The Magpies first attempt on goal comes when Martins capitalises upon some heistancy in the Pools backline, the Nigerian works an angle to the right of Ben Clark but sees his left-footed strike from just outside the area evade the hosts’ target.

8min – Nicky Butt tries to switch play but the quick-thinking Robson intercepts, the Pools winger has just Steven Taylor between himself and the goal and opts to shoot from 25 yards but his effort lacks direction and drifts away for a goal kick.

4min – A mix-up between Clark and Humphreys sees the Magpies win the first corner of the afternoon, N’Zogbia takes but it’s a Pools head which clears.

2min – The hosts have certainly made the brighter start and Steven Taylor has to be alert to intercept inside the area after Jones had tried to cushion Robson’s high, far post delivery into the path of Brown.

  • 66 Jon Goodwyn // Jul 19, 2008 at 3:49 PM

But in fairness , how many times has he played 90 mins since he was here?

Since he got back from his massive injury hes barely played at all, hardly had a chance to prove himself.
I think we should keep hold of him for atleast this season, and it looks like we will, because the quality is still there, is evident from the snippets he played last season.

but glad I’m not the only one with a soft spot for the fella.

Oh, I’m from Brazil, I can tell many things about this guy.

Actually, he’s the best Cruzeiro’s players, and one of the bests in Brazil.

He’s too fast, and absolutely important for the team. But, I think if Newcastle wants to buy the player, the club must be able to pay an unbelievable fee.
