Keegan – Duff Looked Very Sharp

July 19th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 180 Comments

Kevin Keegan seemed to be a happy man this afternoon,  satisfied with a good performance from his team, as they handled Hartlepool United very well, after the first 30 minutes or so was competitive.

danny-guthrie-6.jpg

Danny Guthrie – while at Bolton

And Kevin was full of praise for the man of the match Damien Duff, who has lost some weight over the summer.

The former Chelsea and Blackburn winger is having his very first full pre-season for a number of years, and he certainly opened everybody’s eyes today, with an excellent performance.

Duff - excellent display and 3 goals

Kevin talked after the game about Damien:

“He looks very sharp,”  “It’s the first time in three or four years that he has had a pre-season.”

“He has missed all pre-season training in the last three and any pro will tell you, that is of major importance to get that in because it gives you a base for the season.”

“He has looked very sharp. He says his weight is down to what it was when he was 17, 18, and he looked like a 17 or 18-year-old out there.”

“He was very good and the three goals were nice to see. He has worked very, very hard, as have all the players.”

Today’s win also saw a great start to his Newcastle career by young Danny Guthrie, who had an assist for Duff, and scored himself, all within 8 minutes of him coming on at half time.

Keegan seems to like Danny a lot, and thinks he will go on to become a big hit on Tyneside:

“He was very good. I wanted to play him from the start, but he has just had a little bit of a problem,” “They do get a lot of niggles at this time of the year.”

“He has had a little bit of a problem with sore shins, so we just backed off.” “But he came on for the second half and within four or five minutes, he had made a goal and scored a goal.”

“I think he will be a tremendous asset to us. He is a typical Liverpool player, he passes the ball really well and you don’t see him give it away very often.”

“The goal was probably a bonus.”

Newcastle fans at the game were also impressed with Danny, who looked an absolute steal at just around £2M – another great buy by Keegan.

It’s hard to grumble at the players Kevin has brought in so far.

And if the next four or five are anywhere near as good as Gutierrez and Guthrie, then things will start to buzz on Tyneside again, that’s for sure.

Comments welcome.

I’m hoping that transfer enquiries- both to and from the club are being conducted like the Gutierrez deal, rather than being settled via the back pages of the papers.

I recall being pleased with just about all of Big Sams signings last time round- Alan Smith being the most disappointing, but at the time it didn’t seem like a bad thing!

    Onwards and upwards gentlemen!

  • 2 Tommy // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:02 PM

I honestly have a good feeling about Duff..

Maybe he just has been very unlucky.

  • 3 Graham // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:02 PM

I could look like a 17 year old against a half fit Hartlepool side!

It was a decent game and Duff was the outstanding player (obviously). Lets hope that his injury problems are behind him and he can strat to reproduce the form he undoubtedly has.

As far as transfers are concerned – i’m not panicking. Keegan and co know what theyre doing and they will come

  • 4 Toony Soprano // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:05 PM

I just wonder how many of BFSA’s mediocre looking team will eventually shows some form under KK the man manager like enrique started to do last season.
I remeber his last spell making people like Rob Lee, Scott Sellars, David Kelly, Gavin Peacock, Steve Howey, Baz Vennison, Steve Watson, Lee Clark play to the best of their abilities.

Duff (3 today am i p****d), Smith,Geremi,Zog,enrique will all in time play better plus new signings might do ok

  • 5 Shearer#1 // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:13 PM

KK said Duffer hasn’t had a proper pre-season for 4 years. If he can get back to the way he was playing around 2002-2004 he’s a £17m player. I think he’s only 29 years old. Still want us to sign Arda though. Arda, Duff, Gutierrez, Milner & either Joe Cole or SWP as our wingers this season hopefully. & a top class target man & centre back.

  • 6 toon4lyf // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:13 PM

    we should buy ortega

  • 7 ToonTimbo // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:13 PM

Does any1 else think kevin keegan is an absolute legend?? lol

Whos he again toon4lyf?? ive heard of him!!

  • 8 Paul // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:20 PM

a ;edgend…imo there has never been a better football manager…never mind sir alex or scolaro or ancelloti or lippi….there all brilliant managers….but theyvll all had the money at there disposal….keegan creates everything from nothing….making him truly the best

  • 9 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:20 PM

Is that Ariel Ortega he is coming up 35!

  • 10 Toony Soprano // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:21 PM

    Hey Shearer#1

Joe cole is a cockney barrow boy on 1ook a week more chance of nelson getting his other eye back i think

SWP would be ok, keep their kid out of eldon sq thow

  • 11 Paul // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:23 PM

we should buy adriano…let kk tlk ta him…let him know what the nightlife is like….hey presto world class, before he got chubby he was said to have the potential to be one of the best forwards every…and the ebst inthe world today

  • 12 Neville Brewis // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:24 PM

Comment 4–Toony well said young man, you have instigated a feel good factor. I am tapping my feet to Sir Cliff, and nodding in agreement with all you bloggers. Well I need to pop off and get my cream soda-back soon.

  • 13 Shearer#1 // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:25 PM

Yeah but if Chel$ki sign Robinho & Kaka he’ll be warming the bench every week. Surely he’ll want to play. Cole, Arda & Duff supplying Owen & Martins would be quality.

  • 14 Toony Soprano // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:28 PM

Nev, Sir Cliff?, Ortega is nearly as old as him

might as well go for Teddy Sherringham

  • 15 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:28 PM

Ha ha Nelson, you are right about cole toony! We have more chance of George Cole, bout the same age as Ortega.

  • 16 Paul // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:30 PM

we’ll be gettin reyes…can sense it…joe cole??? if he joins newcastle ill be the next football fan to get arrested for runnin onto the pitch n puttin a player on dere arse….can stand him…he plays for chelsea and almost all chelsea players are overrated…and has no1 noticed when chelsea players move clubs their quality disapears…. no point…get someone better for less

  • 17 Neville Brewis // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:31 PM

Yes I beleive you are right about Ortega. Is anyone watching the choirs with Russell Watson. The Alleycats ARE OUT!

  • 18 tanya toon // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:33 PM

Hey Nev- I like the welsh boys (well I like any boys). Just joking no stalkers please!

  • 19 Shearer#1 // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:34 PM

How can you say Joe Cole is over-rated? He’s more skillful than Rooney. & no one thought we’d sign Duff with his 70k a week wages when Spurs & Liverpool wanted him. Reyes would be quality as well though.

  • 20 Toony Soprano // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:35 PM

should go back for Warnock, he has been decent for a while and young enough to be and asset. spar wide of chimbonda he’s an old stiff arse like ortega, let him go to Keaaanooo at the village of the dammed (asbo land)

  • 21 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:39 PM

He is a good player shearer just aint coming here 100k plus. Champions league etc etc.

  • 22 Toony Soprano // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:42 PM

Hey Nev the Taff will sir Alco let Jonny Evans come to the toon?

i am sure that he would be glad off it after last season playing infront of the audiance from Jeremy Kyle

  • 23 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:43 PM

Village of the damned asbo land that is a bit em—- funny ha ha. I hate chimbonda another big head that will end up at a rubbish club.

Toony is that not that dreadful programme that has poor people fighting. It is so unfortunate.

  • 25 Bill F SPLASH THE CASH ASH // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:48 PM

What sort of game did Cacapa have, anyone know?

  • 26 Alex // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:50 PM

I know that it was a pre season friendly and that it was hartlepool united .But there is already a feel good factor in the air after today’s game .I really hope that Duff is back to full fitness there was never any doubt about his ability .If he stays fit and rediscovers his Blackburn form with Jonas providing crosses from the other side then we will be flying this season

  • 27 Toony Soprano // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:50 PM

Ortega has a decent Keeganesque Mullet -who is he playing for now?

Can anyone think of any CB’s we should sign?

We need an old head talking to young taylor,

    Wheres Japp Stam?

  • 28 Neville Brewis // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:52 PM

I hope we sign that young Larsson and Inler, they will help form a great midfield to supply Davies and Owen.

  • 29 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:55 PM

Ortega plays for River Plate sponsored by Denby. Jaap has an eye injury. Van Buyten could be ok if they could get him.

  • 30 Freddie the pole // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:58 PM

    Hey Nev

i didn’t know the mighty Wyn was playing up front again?

Larsson was class against us last season until Nicky B knobbled him

  • 31 Matt // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:03 PM

Hopefully the news of Duff scoring 3 goals will encourage other clubs to make a bid for him.

  • 32 Toony Soprano // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:07 PM

Van Buyten was a hair man as well

Laursson was class against us until ginga Nick did him

    How are Tozer and Kadar?

  • 33 Alex // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:08 PM

Redknapp was quoted today saying that he has to sell before he can buy anymore players. So how about trying for Distin ?

  • 34 beye the great // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:10 PM

i remember ortega being linked with us i remember when i was in school people thought he was defo going to sign this was in 2003 and he was to old then the adriano point is a good 1 does any1 know his transfer status if we could get him and keegan can get him playing the way he used to then we are potenyially looking at the worlds best striker

  • 35 Anth // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:12 PM

i think coloicini would be a great buy for cd , also kompany would awesome

  • 36 Hadrian // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:12 PM

as long as keegan gets to veto theplayers that come in , and wise n co give him a decent selection to go for , im pretty confidnet he will be able to work within these boundries and single out great players from wiseys list .
thats if wisey has it in him to give keegan a wide selection of upcomming attainable talent .
back to that old chestnut , could keegan himself not attract what we call unatainable talent if he not wisey were selling the club

  • 37 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:14 PM

DVB has nice hair hmmm ha ha not really. Tozer is a couple of years off pro level and Kadar is injured.

  • 38 Oba's Mum // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:16 PM

Today really has brought back the feel good factor to me, KK is god, everyone i Know is buzzing tonight.

If we have a good run in the games ahead, Imagine what the buzz is going to be like just before the start.

KK will do wonders for duff, butt, milner and owen, but i think Smith has never been the same since leeds and his time is over.

How many bods are going to mallorca?

  • 39 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Yeah beye Adriano was awesome until 2 years ago now he is a ronaldo double without the gap teeth. Billy bloater he is , if someone could get him going again- great but its the money thing he would want mega bucks. Could be another Paddy K.

  • 40 Peter Andre // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:18 PM

    Alex,

Mercenary Distin, is as good as anyone we have and he has a left shoe as well,

Harry wouldnt flog him though, unless their was a monkey in it for him

Wot about the two cb from Balckburn Nelson or the other one who is built like Elswick Heights?

  • 41 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:22 PM

Obas mum calm doon pet, its only a friendly against poor oppos. Also we need 8 players so lets wait until we get them before getting a feel good factor. Anyway oba reckons yer a canny cook. :D Oh aye he is god well said he is the best motivator!

  • 42 Midjew // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:23 PM

    Cant wait for new season.

For me we need a new:
    1x Cb – A Starter
1x Lb- Young Guy to push Enrique
    1x Playmaker – A Starter
1x DM – Young Guy to push Butt and Take over from him
1x Striker – BIG guy to hold play up replacement for viduka -MAYBE gomis.

    and some youth players

    so basically MIN 5 Players.

As long as we dont lose anyone, we DEF have enough wingers

  • 43 toon4lyf // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:25 PM

  • 44 MAG PIE // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:25 PM

Duff – I won’t say I told you so cos it’s too early but surely now he needs to be given a chance. Smith too.

  • 45 Toony Soprano // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:25 PM

Adriano was class and inter are trying to flog him to chelsk$i.

might as well try for Huntalaar, he would want less and is hungry for success not greggs pasties, or is their more chance of the fuel prices coming down

  • 46 toon4lyf // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:26 PM

    colliccini tu

  • 47 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:30 PM

Mijdew well said mate but add another cb and a rb to the list we have no back up for beye. No way we could start with taylor faye cacapa and edgar + 1 as 2 of those won’t play.

  • 48 Dave Grolsch // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:32 PM

two guys at Blackburn might be grabbable

    Samba and Nelson

Chimbonda is a woman dressed as a bloke

    beware

  • 49 Midjew // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:35 PM

true – BUT Geremi CAN go there, also Taylor Can. So thats 2 Back ups

  • 50 Neville Brewis // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:38 PM

Did anyone hear that Alistair Darling . Just as the economy took a welcome upturn at the end of the week. He says that things are worse than he thought. Is he related to Ratner , anyway I think we should sign Kevin Beattie to play beside Taylor. Who else thinks the fiscal rate of inflation is wholly dependent on true figures being allotted, instead of gross manipulation of the afore mentioned?

  • 51 toonman // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:40 PM

i just cant imagine taylor as a RB the slowness and woeful crosses he will put

  • 52 Dave Grolsch // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:41 PM

    Mag pie

Smith is a adaptable Sub at best who can do a job in a number of positions, just maybe he is another one who, like Nicky Butt came from Manu – 1st season rabbit in the head lights second season – settle and find some form

  • 53 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:43 PM

Midjew- Geremi can’t he is too slow and Taylor is a cb. Please don’t fall into the he can play there. It then means we are a cenre back less-we need 2 players for every position. Man utd would not ask Rio to play rb. It actually got Roeder the sack going into a season with babayaro and carr no back up ,with ramage and taylor having to play full backs. Leaving only 2 cb’s!

  • 54 Paul // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:44 PM

oh god look what ive staretd with adriano….he is available as inter have had enough of his partying, which is why he would THINK about coming to newcastle, and as someone commented on getting him palying the way he used 2, Kk has installed a fitness program as that is the main aim of newcastles training these days, hence the signign of robbie elliot as coach, and that is his only problem…fitness, so he can party, get fit, be the worlds best striker….and work under the football god KK…..would be worth a try for defo…got to have ambition…and MA would want to make 1 big signing to stop the fans pressure of not spending money….

  • 55 Midjew // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:47 PM

Not true, Taylor STARTED as a RB like Micah Richards who can change freely.

And watching Taylor he plays iN RB position V. Well.

But I do agree with you in the sense that it would be great to have some young KID. not sure who.

  • 56 Paul // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:47 PM

and with the wisey comment he is not there to sell the club instead of KK….they would both talk to prospective signings, wisey and his team are there to fidn new signings and look into KK’s wanted list…make enquires ect….then they would both talk to the player as 2 opinions are betetr than one

  • 57 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:51 PM

Midjew if thats the case play taylor rb, but then we would need another cb. There is only one Taylor, we need a squad two for every position . Not switching about, yes if desperate but we need a big squad everyone knows that.

  • 58 ToonTimbo // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:53 PM

I wont to see a youngish (21/22 yo) playmaker whos an acm who can break straight in the first team and inject some life in our midfield to make it more threatening!!

  • 59 Paul // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:56 PM

    toon_timbo…
join wiseys scoutin team…take a trip to brazil and spain, fidn sum good cheap signings for us, then get KK ta sign them….works out good both ways, newcastles scoutin network actually produces somethin, we get new signings…and u get a 2 moneth holiday all paid for :D

  • 60 Toony Soprano // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:58 PM

Taylor is a CB not a right back(emergency only)

Warnock, Evans and a seasoned campaigner

Maybe Irving Natrass or Jeff Clarke

The Adriano thing that you started, it has gathered some momentum, maybe we will see him with the B and W jersey. Very similar to a creative red labelled tabloid.

He would be well worth a punt though

  • 63 Paul // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:11 PM

gathered some momentum?? on here or real world??
it would be worth a punt because although he may be seen as unrealistic, nothigns impossible….and it is actually quite realistic because theres more to going to a club than the money or the football…speshly him….tellin ya nightlife will get him ta newcastle…and adriano will get newcastle to the top….thereofre…if they thought the whole thing through….nightclubs could get newcastle good signings…:D

adriano wouldnt come to us , honest he’s back to his old world class for , he’s not a risk to any team buying him atm imo .
i expect bigger teams than our beloved toon tobe more ppealing for adriano .

maybe if keegan had a word with him we could sell him on playing for a proper football club where one or two season of commitment , gets you welocme in newcastle and worshiped for the rest of your life , we know how to treat our heres , if even they are passing ships in the night , also as they do our beloved shirt justice.

cacapa linked well with given….no surpise….both make mistakes far to often….only difference is given makes up for his mistakes with top class saves….although i think the fact that he played today may be an indication that KK is having serious consideration over whether given should start with the no.1 jersey….i think harper will have his chance this season…never know…under KK harper mite even get to try on an england shirt….:D

Some people on here aint got a clue, Cacapa aint s**t! He had one really bad game due to injury (and maybe the lack of preperation for the physical side of the prem)and the sheep on here follow the media’s verdict on him. The media make out like cacapa is an awful player because they want our defense to be the joke of the prem. They pick flaws in our defence no matter what. Stop following what they say and judge players on their overall performances, not just one match for gods sake

We do not really want any once greats- Aimar I was not unhappy not getting him. Ronaldo-gone, Adriano like I said out of reach and if he was -Patrick Kluivert with a Jocky Wilson gut-naah. They have the best policy now if its true- players on the way up and young before they cost a mint.

  • 91 Bill F SPLASH THE CASH ASH // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:35 PM

It’s easy to put down a win against the likes of Hartlepool as only to be expected but the standard of the lower league clubs is pretty good now. Their fitness levels are very high and they would have been well up for it. A 4-1 win is a good one and I don’t think we should talk it down. I would rate them them as one of the promotion contenders in their league and worth a few bob pre season bet.

  • 92 Toony Soprano // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:36 PM

Did anyone see Imre Varadi spinning the Waltzers at the hoppings this year?

Keegans got a good one in Guthrie, i think that he will take the Nicky B role soon

  • 93 brave new toon // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:36 PM

Just looking through some old blogs and there must be 500 saying “Duff is Finished”
Quite funny.. We fans are so Fickle!!
Whats gonna happen If Smith scores a hat trick at Donny? And Arda Turan claims “It was Dennis Wise that persuaded him to Sign up for the toon!?”
Ha, What will we talk about?!

  • 94 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:37 PM

Paul he would have played Given because he is ready and desperate for a game. It will have no bearing on who will start the season.

  • 95 Spyro // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:38 PM

brave new toon i was one of those fan :D

but to tell the truth, todays performance hasn’t changed my opinion of him, it has simply made me take notice. I will now judge him on what he can do consistently for us. could just be a flash in the pan couldnt it

I dont join in with the smith insults, its too easy. Everyone agrees on it so there is no point speaking on it really. I did hope when he signed he would deliver though, kind of diappointed.

I personally think Wise is doing a fine job, he is in charge of the youth signings and we are doing well in that department it seems. He is the one who convinced Spear to choose us over Arsenal. VERY IMPRESSIVE

  • 96 Paul // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:39 PM

shame….if he joined wud have a smile bigger than a freshly f****d nun…

n i aint sayin cacapa is s*** at such, he is just to slow, and although being a good defender in terms of his ability, his pace lets him down, and this allows quick players to run rings around him, making him far from useful against skillful teams, this can also lead to him making mistakes as he will tire alot quicker than the other players due to his age, i agree about ur comment on the media….remember boumsong….imo he was 1 of the only three quality CB weve had in years, the others being woodgate and taylor, what noone notices is the fact that he was having to do the job of 2 defenders in most games, as his partner was the infamous titus bramble on many occasions….1 defender….vs 2 strikers and there assistant bramble….any defender would look bad!

  • 97 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:41 PM

Brave new toon- we will talk about you saying we would have 3 new signings by monday or else you would not blog again! :D

  • 98 Hadrian // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:41 PM

but cacapa has been singled out by teams in the prem as being one of our weakest links (he maybe not) , but he’s nt going to survive with the constant bombardment teams are going to give him to exploit the weakness they think he has .
same with gabbie heinze for the argi- brazil games , they think hes a weak link so they hammer him for the full 90, and usually come off well by doing it , untill our new signing was stuck infront of heinze to help him out .

  • 99 Paul // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:42 PM

with given starting, it will be because KK wants to see how well he plays, if he had total confidence in given, he would have started with forser or harper, thus showing he needs to see how well given can play before picking him over harper

  • 100 Toony Soprano // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:43 PM

Cacapa can cerainly read the game i think that 1 bad game aginst pompey in a bad team knocked his conf.

he is a better thinker than Faye and would play the quick man better

  • 101 Spyro // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:43 PM

    Paul

ok well maybe i jumped the gun a bit. Its just that i get annoyed with those who praise taylor and ridicule cacapa. I just don’t understand it. Anyway, your points are fair, speed and age isn’t on his side. However in terms of ability to read the game, he is our best CB

  • 102 Spyro // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:44 PM

good point Hadrian, which is exactly why we need a hardworking CM area to protect our CB’s. This is why i didn’t want Aimar, he doesn’t work hard in the middle and wont defend…AND he has been below average for years now

Concerning Given, maybe to see how he fairs in a real match after his surgery?

  • 103 brave new toon // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:45 PM

I admit I felt the same..
I was there today, He looked good, And fit, But i’ve gotta say The quality of left back was NOT GOOD, However like you say.. He’s bought himself some space as far as the fans go.. Lets see how he fairs agaisn’t Valencia?

Oh I also Dissagree with your Opinions about Tayls… But we’ll not get into that! ;)

  • 104 Bill F SPLASH THE CASH ASH // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:45 PM

A Cacapa playing to his best would have the crowd singing his praises. I can think of several players last season who were hopeless under Sam but started to show under KK. Cacapa hasn’t had that chance yet. If he still hasn’t improved after a few matches (if he is playing) then I will possibly agree with the doubters but I would definately give him a chance.

Theres nowt wrong with some older players if I had to pick one I would have Junhino in a shot. I also think Palermo would be worth a punt.

  • 105 tom tomb // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:46 PM

Paul Boumsong- now that is it I have had enough- work of two defenders ha. Get some footage and see what the fool got up to. butt cannot start against Man Utd unless we dont buy a new DM, i pray we dont play smith you how he is like against UTD-

i am happy with the 1-4 scoreline- it show business was done-

Duff- well let him fight with Zogs- he looks and saounds as if he is up to it or willing to try- if not play them together- form permitting of course

transfer conerns, not at all- who else is buying en mass, not many, what are tottenham doing, Arsenal- shit players publicly want to leave aresnal, our gems appear committed (Oba )

but we do need more bodies in midfield, a CB deseriable, not essential- striker a quality cover one that is underratted

king Kev is the man, we makes players feel better- keegan is as honest as one can be- that is why he is a messiah ( sorry guys had to say it) coz its true

tough season ahead, every team is strengthening in one form or another, there are no easy matches

the key to our success if any will be to TO PLAY HIGH TEMPO FOOTBALL

My bro’s mate is currently training to be a coach, and Newcastle have taken him on and therefore he found out that Terry Mac is on £200,000 per year for:

    Picking the subs

Acting as a liaison for players who have concerns

And Ordering the Fish and Chips for the travel home from away games!

    100% True!

  • 112 brave new toon // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:56 PM

spyro… Ok, lets get into it.. ha
I agree that he akes mistakes, But so did Terry @22, AndI agree He lets his heart get the better of him on the pitch sometimes, But I think thats why so many of us love him… Because you have to admit, He does show a lot of potential.. along with bags of Heart and Spirit, And isn’t that what Toon fans love?
Also I’d say he will improve markedly with a solid, pacy, consistant CH alongside.. He gets dragged out of position too much.. but sometimes thats down to trying to cover for Bramble, boumsong, etc…. and Cacapa (ha!)
And will also benifit (whole back 4) from better protection from midfield..
    ??

    to brave new toon

if what you say does happen then it is my right as a fan to change my mind and give full confidence to those who deserve it

as for dennis wise: the player with whome we have been more genuinly linked with i have been happy with, Modiric, arda, Jonas, Ashaven, guthrie and Aimar

as for smith- the boy needs to score a hatrick before i can consider him someone who deserves our benches-
i say this purely on past perfomance, which denotes behaviour, which is usually habitual

My team, as things stand, for we must live in reality

    othordox

    Harper

    Taylar Cacapa Enrique

    Guiterrez Faye Guthrie Duff/Nzog

    Owen Martins

    attacking

    Given

    Taylor Cacapa Enrique

    Jonas Faye Duff/zogs

    Owen

    Martins Viduka

i would be suprised if keegan dismissed these two systems

  • 119 brave new toon // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:11 AM

I know… I understand a lot of comments about him… But i think 99% of mags REALLY want him to come into his own this year.
Depressingly however I think Wheater made more progress in one season than tays has in three… He’ll still make my dream team though!
THing is with Cacapa, no one can call him shite cos of what he’s achieved, but isn’t it a blatent case of “Can he adjust to the Premiership”?

  • 124 the black magpie // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:22 AM

and nicky butt does- i cant count how many time i saw butt pass to noone and the fouls too, in dangerous areas-

i like milner, on the wing- but he has to get passed the Argetinian international fisrt in my opinion- and he would be lost in central midfield

fay is pretty disciplined and wins headers- not the best passer i agree- i agree-

but i feel we are really wanting in a strong DM- butt im sorry is passed it in a top 6 team- why else did Fergie let him go, at such a cheap price to boot

but i repect the man- he does the shift and i dont mind him in the starting line up, but not my prefered choice

  • 125 Spyro // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:24 AM

Milner wouldnt be lost in a central position, he would be better there as the weakest aspect to his game is his crossing, something you do very little of in the middle. His shooting with both feet is good and he works hard. Perfect for the middle IMO

  • 126 Paul // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:24 AM

WHY is he a future star? what has he done to warrant that? He had one decent season (not fantastic, just decent) and many jumped the gun. I know we havent had a decent defender for a while but it just seems a bit desperate to me.

Wheater, Cahill, Dawson and ferdinand all currently have more going for them than taylor. Im not saying it will stay that way. Im not saying they are great CB’s.

  • 139 Paul // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:36 AM

who used to be a proffessional, and promising footballer before an injury may i just add…

and with taylor, he is good in the air, he is strong, he is quite quick, and he is a leader, and acts as an organiser in defense, soemthign which i feel is one of givens letdowns, despite being a world class keeper, organising the defense is an important role, and given does not seem to do this very well, as are defenses are uaually all over the place when he is in goal, resulting in our so called poor defense which should in reality be brilliant, whereas harper does, noting that the defense played mroe solididly with harper in goal…also noting haper has conced less goals per game than given, fact

    toontimbo totally agree

  • 144 Spyro // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:42 AM

    Paul

ok then, now i see where are opinions begin to differ. I do not feel taylor is quick, in fact i feel he is painfully slow and that is his biggest let down, a lack of NATURAL ability. You are right that all young defenders make mistakes. However, players like Richards, Ferdinand, Dawson etc have the pace, height or strength to make up for it. I also don’t really think Taylor is good in the air either as he tends to misjudge where the ball is going quite a lot. He isn’t weak but i would’nt really say he is particularly stong.

In terms of being a leader, he is U-21 England captain so he must trully possess this quality. Although i am yet to see it in a Toon shirt TBH.

  • 145 Paul // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:44 AM

he would make a brilliant dm if he stayed out of trouble and got a good run int he team….all great dms have the inner aggression…and you need to be strong….roy keane….then again….if he steps out of line again as his punishment we could let him follow in roy keanes footsteps and send him to sunderland!!

  • 146 Kevin // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:46 AM

Paul I actually agree with you about Taylor that he’s a leader and organizer. He’s got the raw physical talent as well – but sometimes his coordination and decision making let him down. I’d personally have him partnering Faye than Cacapa – but they’ve both got good and bad traits.
BNT- I’m sure we’re all with you in being hopeful to see some news tomorrow or Monday. I mean, every morning I wake up and first thing that runs through my head is “Could today be the day?” What a rush the day we signed Spiderman! Let’s have another one of those, eh?

As I said before – we’ll be set with three more signings, one from each line. I’m really hoping we’re able to sign up Seba Larsson. Now there’s a young, exciting, intelligent player with a future. To be honest I’m gutted we didn’t go for Crouch. I thought he’d be a great partner up front.

  • 147 ToonTimbo // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:47 AM

At the end of the day Spyro, You would put taylor at center back in a starting 11 wouldnt you!! I certainly would!!

And bramble was fast- that proves that that is not everything ;)

  • 148 Spyro // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:47 AM

Barton could be chosen instead of Butt if we played two CM’s as Barton and Guthrie could do a good job defensivley as a pairing. However, Barton would struggle to defend by himself if the midfield was a diamond style formation i.e. AM, LW, RW, DM. This sort of formation needs an out and out DM

  • 149 Spyro // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:48 AM

bramble had everything…apart from a brain lol

  • 150 Paul // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:52 AM

spyro…i said quite quick…he hasnt got the blistering pace of bellamy….but he isnt painfully slow….he is fast enough, and he wills till be getting faster, he trains hard, and his coordination i agree is about as good as a stoned blind person, but, again…it will imrpove, we need a young centerback for him to form a long term partnership, after a couple of seasons their understanding will be excellent and we would have a rock solid defence, but not strong, i agree we have a disagreement there, anyone of that size will be strong enough, and will again, be getting stronger

  • 151 Spyro // Jul 20, 2008 at 12:52 AM

Ive been hoping Duff would turn things around.

If he is able to stay fit through pre season and hit the new campaign firing he will be like a new 20m signing.

Duff at his best, can play at a level that players these days are going for 20m plus.

    Keep it up son.

I for one are behind you, hopefully now more fans will give Duff a chance and support him, as that can only make a player perform better if the toon army are cheering your name, rather than screeming for blood.

Saw George Clooney having a quiet natter with KK after the Harlepool game. Clooney looked great, his weight is back down and he is off the smoke.
Shite, he has been a regular in the Oceans 11 squad for years. We should sign him. Might struggle to match the wages though.

Spear is moving up to Newcastle next Sunday. I’d imagine that means the deal is pretty much done.

Great to hear about Spear, Hatty. Get him in and get it done.
Is this the player BNT keeps referencing? Hope not…we’ll need a bit stronger reinforcements than that

  • 172 DC Magpie // Jul 20, 2008 at 3:20 AM

yea signing Spear would be great, a very exciting signing.

Who knows after a year of two in the reserves and a stint on loan we can sell him to Feyernord or even Chelsea for 2M!

  • 173 Kevin // Jul 20, 2008 at 4:00 AM

Hey DC – looks like only the USA contingent are up at this hour…I’m in Chicago myself.

I was just having a laugh with Spear – of course he’s one for the future. I know what you mean about selling him for 2M but if he’s as good as they say, I’d rather have him scoring 25 a season for us in a few years than Chelsea!!

    PAUL

your arguing with SPYRO re Taylor!!

Dont bother, the boy will always be right about Taylor. He doesnt like him and singles him out for constant criticism!! He was quoted as saying that Cacapa was the best defender at the club, just before the Portsmouth Debacle!!

He stated Sam Allardyce was the best Manager at the club have had for years, and he was doingeverything right!! This was in the middle of his ‘bad spell’.

And probably the crowning glory that makes me chortle, is the FACT (admitted it himself) is that he cant get to NUFC games as he lives in London…LOL

So the most he gets is watching games through the lens of a camera!!

Granted the bloke boy does have some valid points, but its a shame he feels he needs to criticise one of our own, and most promising players (NOTE SPYRO, i am not saying he is the finished article). By the way Cacapa has had one bad game?????? Was it Manure? Arsenal? Portsmouth? He played excelent in those games didnt he??

  • 177 Paul // Jul 20, 2008 at 9:48 AM

fair enought hen…u know when bartonw ill be available for selection again?? dont just mean released but like, ready to play, trainign and all

  • 178 Davey G // Jul 20, 2008 at 11:00 AM

Beginning of last week it was expected that he wouldnt be released for 4-5 weeks!!

So when he gets released, he will need at least 2 weeks to get fit and then maybe a game or 2 to re aquaint himself with a footy!!

this is if the club dont sack him of course, they have been very measured in their responses to JB questions!!

The problem is with Taylor, is that he is decent most of the time. Solid, brave and fairly aware. But he almost without fail will make a mistake a game that will 40% likely cost us a goal [by my reckoning!]. Usually caused by cockiness going forward, loss of position or lazy passing or a combination of the three.

You may say Im wrong, but I would say 2/3 out of 10 games he’ll cost us a goal and usually due to over-confidence on his part. Which at Premiership level is terrible.

[Just so you know he almost had one of those upsets only yesterday on the 27th minute.]

The lads problem is clear to see, he needs to wind his bloody neck in, get down to the graft and do the simple stuff to perfection. He comments to the papers FAR too much for my liking and he is always seen given it billy big balls on the pitch and shouting the odds.

As is mentioned constantly on this board and others, he needs someone apposing and with undoubted class next to him and he’ll come on leaps and bounds. But if not, shut up and concentrate on what position your playing and what your doing Stevie!
