Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan is said to be ready to make an improved offer for Blackburn Rover’s left-back Stephen Warnock.
Stephen Warnock – Keegan seems keen to bring him to Tyneside
The England defender was said to be the subject of a £3M offer from Newcastle last week, but other quotes had the fee lower than that. We think it was probably nearer £1.5M or £2M.
But it looks like Keegan is now ready to go back with a better bid, and certainly left back is one position the Newcastle boss is looking to strengthen.
Defenders Stephen Carr, Peter Ramage, Lamine Diatta and David Rozehnal have all left St James’ Park in the summer, and Keegan wants to bring in at least a center-back and left back to shore up his defense. (I’ve got Nicky Shorey on the brain!).
Kevin was asked which positions he thinks he needs to strengthen when he said he needed “about four quality players in the right positions”.
Kevin replied:
“If the evidence of Saturday’s game [the 4-1 win at Hartlepool is anything to go by, those positions are predominantly defensive.”
But new Rovers boss Paul Ince will also be keen not to lose too many of his players, with goalkeeper Brad Friedel and winger David Bentley seemingly leaving shortly.
Warnock is another product of the Liverpool Academy and is a decent player, who could get better under the guidance of Keegan, and he would battle young Jose Enrique for the left back position at Newcastle.  Warnock is flexible and can also play in left midfield.
He is 5’9″ tall and the Ormskirk-born player turns 27 in December. He has played 50 times for Blackburn, since signing from Liverpool in January, 2007.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41Warnock, top Quality, better than the Coles and Bridges, if KK sez so he has to be good , etc .etc.
Hey get real folks, he is a Liverpool reject((who will be cheap) is that what we should be looking for.
And hey they got a sale on at “spec savers” for those who believe he is quality.

Comment #42Tomtoon. got to pull you up on hleb being better than arshavin. Arshavin was one of the stars of the euros and i have never seen hleb dictate a game the way arshavin does. 20mill is expensive but if barry and keane are worth 18mill i know who i would rather spend the money on.

Comment #44Id rather have Hleb than Arshavin anyday. Hleb is the same player as Arshavin but he doesnt have to dictate a game, Arsenal had Fabregas for that, who did Russia have? Nobody, Zyryanov at a push.
gorskino – he will leave belgium because he was very close to joining espanyol in january he is captain not vice-captain.

Comment #45Oh i was thinking as his wife is Miss Belgium and does things for tv and stuff over there i would think she would of stayed. also its not been announced he is captain but as Bart Goor will not be it then it should go to him. thinking that he will be captain and is worth 3mill its worth buying (does he remind you of beye he was amazing last year).

Comment #46He was capain every time i saw him, he was more attacking than Beye. He hasnt been much of a regular until the last few seasons so i think we could well maintain a good balance between hin and Enrique playing whilst keeping them both happy.

Comment #47You obviously didn’t watch the Euros then did you Agnetha (fernando), Ashavin played 2 games. One game he was class the other he went missing. Not worth £20m.

Comment #48He was only captain due to injuries to Bart Goor but hes officially Vice Captain but will be announced full time captain soon, well he would be great but would you see KK being intrested in him?? as all he seems to be consentrated at mo is the premier league (Guthrie,Warnock,Chimbonda etc…)

Comment #49I can remember seeing this guy when he was 16 for England he played as DM and ruled the midfield. He then broke his legs badly and took 3+ years to recover. He eventually came good but was asked to play on the left wing as backup for Harry K, then he was asked to play as left back as back up for Riise.
So I guess his natural postion would be DM and is equally at home as a left wing back.

Comment #51Agnetha… I believe you my dear friend, and with you being a toon fan and all, tell me this… If Newcastle get a good season and finish above spurs, then there can be no argument anymore can there?… Then all spurs fans will have to accept that not only are we a bigger club stadium wise and in our fanbase, we also have the better team and all in all NUFC is a way bigger club than spurs, wouldnt you agree my fellow toon supporter? Also we would have to laugh at all those ridiculous fees spurs use on players that are only worth half of it.

Comment #52Chris, I thought he played 3 games, 2 were good and 1 was very poor and played off the pitch by the Spanish.

So maybe KK is being clever and can remember him as DM a bit like Arca playing LB for the scum and the smoggies switching him to DM/CM

Comment #55Lol@ Valle and Spyro, I too agree that it’s too much of a coincidence about the name and as most of fernando’s names have been banned from here they now have to be a little more careful what they say so they can comment on here.

Comment #61as if spurs weren’t lightweight and pathetic enough already they sign two more tiny fellows. they are going to get trampled. i see them starting much they same way they did last season. they will become the new newcastle – the team with too much potential that can never do jack ****. now they are making the big money yet likely to flop signings and they are piling on the debt. ramos will be sacked soon enough and they will fall into the same cycle of expectation and failing managers that we did to leave us stuck in midtable. this will be our year tho boys to get back up on them. keegan seems to be working his magic and with a couple more signings 🙂
few years time we will do what spurs have never done – be in the champs league. haway fellas

Comment #62Agnetha, there’s almost no point posting a comment that you believe a certain signing would be “shockingâ€. If you’re going to make a critical comment, make it constructive and intelligent, not some half-assed negative remark. The only thing “shocking†is posts like that one. Explain why you think Warnock might not be good buy and who you think would be better for a similar price,
And be open-minded about whoever we might sign – support signings once made even if it’s tempered with scepticisn.
And if you’re a Spurs fan just don’t bother to visit the site at all!

Comment #64Re Warnock – he is 27 and I can’t see him wanting to join unless he’s going to be 1st choice. That means either the Bull is off or he will be used as a CB. Personally I think he would be suited to CB. Also I rate Warnock as an attacking LB. Not sure what’s in KK’s mind though. Would not have thought this a priority. Still need creativity in midfield for me.

Comment #68I think warnock is ok player but would rather see Shorey in! better player & better sutied to KK’s style of play i think, interms of attacking mid i agree with you Esshi! if we’re too tight to spend big lets raid championship for players, Everton did it with Jagelka & Lescott & cahill! why dont we do it too? What you guys think of Howard from barnsley? be cheap looked good against Prem teams in the FA cup too! played the likes of Gerrard & Ballack off the pitch! & ther’s larsson too!

Comment #70ignore them who said warnock is shocking and stuff bla bla
thats what they said when GUTHRIE signed and after the hartlepool game turn to praises, aiyo so fickled
for me Warnock is a proven premiership player, more experience than enrique, and is solid enough to be a our LB, rather than what we have now, a good squad player
PLUS HE WONT B**T*H L0IKE CHIMBONDA! whoever who recommend him must be out of their mind, we already got habib beye here, that guy will surely B***CH if he comes cos he didnt play, and he wants money ONLY
