Keegan - Gutierrez Can Play In Multiple Positions

July 22nd, 2008 · 46 Comments

In the Evening Chronicle today, Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan has indicated that new signing Jonas Gutierrez is a player who can play in multiple positions.

jonas-gutierrez-ue.jpg

Jonas Gutierrez - can play in a number of positions

And Kevin has already admitted that he has yet to decide just where he will actually play the Argentinian International.

We had assumed Jonas would play on the right wing, but we have a number of players who can play in that position, and just like he did earlier this year, Kevin will be toying with ideas as to how he can get the very best out of what he’s got by the end of August.

He could even play Jonas up front as a striker.

Keegan told the Chronicle today:

“When you see Jonas in training, you know he can play anywhere.”

“He is absolutely top quality, and the fans are going to really like him.”

“He knows the game, and he can play. He sees all the pitch, and maybe could play off a front man as well.”

“I’ve never asked him that, but when you see him in training, he is another one who can really run and cover the ground.”

Gutierrez was with in the squad at Hartlepool for Saturday’s friendly, even though he had the opportunity to sort out his personal things back in Palma.

It turns out that Newcastle and Real Mallorca still have to sort out the final transfer fee Newcastle will pay for the player, and we have a feeling it will be surprisingly small, once the dust settles.

Mallorca are said to be expecting some news from UEFA shortly.

While we have only signed two players this summer so far, which is the bad news, Kevin has got what he wanted - absolute quality in Gutierrez and Guthrie, which is the good news.   :D

Comments welcome.

We WONT have to pay Mallorca anythng, they have no say in the matter, however i think Velez do.

  • 2 ilkkatoon // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:46

i like jonas quality signing hes gonna do well in the next few years i would really like to see more signings it feels like keegan is saying that milner and jonas can play multiple positions in order to hide the fact that no1 is coming to tyneside

  • 3 Darryl // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:51

There will be more signings ilkka. Just because he said he can play in numerous positions, doesnt mean jack.

  • 4 Bingo wing // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:01

i agree with youto ikka keegans just hidin the matter

  • 5 Beattie // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:03

i am getting that feeling as well, unfortunately

and has anyone watched the “ninja warrior” video on the side bar? amazing

  • 6 The Entertainers // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:03

I can see him playing a defensive 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 away from home, just off the lone striker.

But his goalscoring record is almost as good as Smiths!

  • 7 Ian Grainger // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:04

KK needs to shut up and get back to signing players. We have months of silence then he’s been let off the leash and he’s going mental

  • 8 Gateshead Mag. // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:09

I don’t agree with that, We will sign players and I’m starting to get sick of the fact people are saying we wont. Your all trying to act clever analysing what Keegan is saying and then straight away jumping to things. Howay man lads only woman jump to things. Get a grip support your team and believe. He said we need 4 quality players, We’ll effing get them. Back your team and watch this fantastic football club march on to where we belong!

    HOWAY THE LADS!!!

  • 9 Ericles // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:13

Glad he can play anywhere. The way the transfer saga is going he may well have to!

  • 10 agnetha // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:16

Wheres ***** today and his stories of us signing bentley?

  • 11 toonaldinho // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:21

i’m sure this guy could be quality under KK but i’ve looked at his goalscoring record and in 198 games he scored 6…

  • 12 Eyeball // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:25

    Well said GatesheadMag!

Howay lads we’ve signed two players other clubs havent signed any! Granted that guthrie and Spiderman aren’t the aimar and turan that everyone wanted but aslong as theyve came for the football and not for the money Im all for it!!

I think I speak for everyone when I say Im fed up of so called “big name signings” only to turn up, get paid loads, and not perform!! Who says that Turan and Aimar couldve done the job for us when theyve never played in the premiership??

  • 13 staffsmag // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:33

We don’t need big names we need big players and by that I mean the likes of Rob Lee, Nobby, Warren Barton,Albert, Ginola etc. not big names when KK bought them but they made a name for themselves under Keegan and I am sure other players can do the same. Howay the lads and back the team!!!!!

  • 14 Neil Snowdon // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:33

    Dear Ed,

Keegan is berated for saying nothing and then lambasted for saying something! Let’s keep the faith with him. Players need to be flexible. We have a number of options in midfield and I’m certain we’ll have some pleasant surprises in defence before too long. But that is only a feeling.

    Regards,

    Neil

PS. The hols start today. Yeah!

  • 15 alvin_toon // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:37

Jonas will give us lots of option but we are still really short of numbers. The team still lack pace and we need to inject more pace in the team.

  • 16 geordie4life // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:46

totally agree with staffsmag, we need players who want to give everythin for our shirt, not big names who have had there time and are just after a decent wage, we want unheard of players who will come here and turn themselves into geordie legends!!!!!!

    howay the toon!!!

  • 17 JOeT // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:50

Ian grainger, you wernt on your hols in croatia last year were you mate?

  • 18 staffsmag // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:57

geordie4life - cheers mate ! great minds think alike - lol

  • 19 PapaToon // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:04

A bit of time till the transfer deadline, no need to worry about transfers yet. There hasnt been that much transfer activity at the top 10 clubs in the PL. Only the promoted clubs and near relegation clubs last year are buying crap.

We have to also blood the youngsters as well during the season, Our policy has changed we dont just buy players for the first team. Got to think long term.

  • 20 MAG PIE // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:07

Jonas, apparently, can play up front alongside a target man like Viduka. If this is the thinking then it either means Owen is going OR (and more likely) it’s a veiled threat to Owen that we could dispense with him if he doesn’t sign his reduced wage contract.

  • 21 Ericles // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:07

Geordie4life and staffsmag have said all I wanted to say on this. So - OK KK. Howay the lads.

  • 22 Tom_Toon // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:09

MAG PIE - You read far far too much into things.

  • 23 MAG PIE // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:10

TT - maybe. Last night’s cynicism from HPS beginning to rub off on me.

  • 24 Ian Grainger // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:17

    JOeT: Nope

And I’m not really complaining about Keegan, it’s just that no one can shut him up at the moment

  • 25 The Entertainers // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:32

The proposed move for Modric is really puzzling me now.

Am i right in thinking Modric is an attacking midfielder and we bid app’ £16 million for him.

I dont understand if that money is available and Keegan wants a creative midfielder then why are’nt the club going for Bentley who can play right, left or behind the strikers or indeed Moutinho? Granted both are being over priced at above £15 million, but at least test the water, show a bit of ambition again.

The Modric bid is looking very much like our Rooney stunt a few seasons ago.

  • 26 bettyswollocks // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:33

just because kk says the guy can play up top doesnt mean he ever intends to play him there. He’s just being kk - bigging him up and making him feel good. That’s the kk magic.

Like with milner - if kk says he’s thinking he might be better inside then Im almost certain its the right thing to do. Afterall this is the man who made an international centre back out of a reserve team forward in steve howey. barry venison was converted from a decent right back into an international holding midfielder. rob lee was brought in from the right wing and became one of the best center midfields the club has ever had. The list goes on.

    KK knows what he’s doing.

  • 27 Hatty // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:40

Will people stop going on about Bentley!!!

He made it clear how he felt about Newcastle (and it wasn’t positive) in an interview with the Guardian about a month or so before the season finished.

He will not join us, therefore we won’t waste our time bidding.

  • 28 bettyswollocks // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:46

hatty - you forgot to mention that he’s also a little southern queen for not playing at the u21 euros cos he was tired. bless. and he’s got a face that makes you want to punch your own telly.

  • 29 gorskino10 // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:51

But bad news is the way he is saying that Milner can play in center and Jonas can play anywhere is meaning he is kinda admiting defeat on bringing any midfielders in he may get 1 or 2 players (striker, defender) that it due to tight fisted Ashley who i reacon said sell N Zogbia/Milner to get some money in.

  • 30 bettyswollocks // Jul 22, 2008 at 15:08

gorskin - you reading too much into it mate. You’re working on assumptions. KK used to come out with statements like this all the time to make players feel good about themselves.

the fact is none of us really know what is going on. on september 1st we will all know where we stand with Ashley. until then i think it’s a bit harsh to be overly critical.

  • 31 Darryl // Jul 22, 2008 at 15:26

Fairly false attitudes from some people on here. What if we lose a few games.. ? does that mean we will ultimatlley get relegated!?? Your looking at things, then thinking the worst case scenario…. Paranoid or what. I’d suggest you go see a psyc. we have a few Conspiricy Theorists in the making here.

  • 32 Mch // Jul 22, 2008 at 15:33

Much as agreed with Keegan that Jonas is a good player. But we need to see more player and not repeatedly talk about Jonas and Guthrie on how good they are.

Show us some actions through the acquisition of other new players.

  • 33 shearer // Jul 22, 2008 at 16:07

have you ever considerd the reason he talks about these players is because journalists ask him questions about them and not cos he thinks ‘oh i’ll big them up to disguise our lack of transfer activity’
Stop being soft and going off the deep end, he said we’re going to get more so have a bit of faith! Besides its not a case of saying to the club we want him and thats it! its obviously a tricky and complicated process so give the blokes a chance
Keep the faith and wait and see

  • 34 michael12 // Jul 22, 2008 at 16:11

I agree, He is full of praise about our “New signing” and makes Declarations about Players not going anywhere seemingly masking the fact that no one else is coming in.
He says akin to: Duff is like a new player, Zog is born again, Milner and Jonas can play anywhere. We have just signed Taylor Trying to make good news out of nothing.

I too have the feeling that no one significant is coming, another youngster aged 17 or something then inflated by the press to make it appear another signing for the first team. I think we may have one more player coming in and no more.

  • 35 Lacedaemonian // Jul 22, 2008 at 16:32

Velez Sarfield used to be one of the richest clubs in Argentina before the economy completely crashed there. I am guessing they are chasing as much as they can get.

  • 36 figsdad // Jul 22, 2008 at 17:03

michael12 there has to be more players coming in as we lost around 6 or 7 and only 2 came in and we had a really thin team last season..

so we got a few weeks yet and mike ash knows if he doesnt the fans will turn on him and not on keegan..

maybe wise my get some stick as well.

  • 37 G // Jul 22, 2008 at 17:27

Mike Ashley gives no money to Keegan for buying a new forward and he has to put Gutierrez as forward…

He is telling Mike: If you dont give me money please sell Newcastle to others who know football or else I put Harper as forward next game!

  • 38 andy // Jul 22, 2008 at 17:35

everybody seems to want to sign players but if the right players are not avaiable what is the point in signing them!

  • 39 figsdad // Jul 22, 2008 at 18:07

There is loads of players up for sale..
    That would improve us.,

    example..

    Fernando Meira to galatasary
    Lucho wants out of porto..

    Almar to benfica.

    Quaresma to inter..

  • 40 Petey // Jul 22, 2008 at 18:27

did u guys hear that he isnt alowed to do the mask celebration?

lol, the PL banned it just this season or something…

LAME! but guttierez has said he will “retire” the celebration rofl.

maybe he will come up with something else unique, tis always fun to watch good celebrations.

  • 41 Lacedaemonian // Jul 22, 2008 at 18:36

Perhaps if we get into Europe he can fetch his mask out of retirement.

    “Spidergimp, Spidergimp!!”

  • 42 Petey // Jul 22, 2008 at 18:37

haha, u mean WHEN we get in europe lol…

  • 43 Luke // Jul 22, 2008 at 19:05

Excited about spidey, but not nearly as much as he is about his own celebration. When you score as infrequently has he’s done, it’s exactly that: a celebration. Looking forward to some delivery.

  • 44 baz // Jul 22, 2008 at 19:37

GET CISSE IN!-he looks great and is available-we failed with aimar but cisse is there for the taking-get it on the blogs and websites so keegan sees it-have a look at him on u tube-milner in midfield with jonas up front and floating about the wings-martins,owen,vidooks and cisse attack attack attack!!!

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
