If Newcastle were ever interested in former Liverpool striker, Djibril Cisse, they will need to move quickly, as time seems to be running out.

Djibril Cisse - wants move back to England
Olympique Marseille Sports Director Jose Anigo has indicated that Cisse will need to make a decision on his future very shortly.
He is said to want to return back to England, and has been linked with Newcastle, Manchester City and Wigan, but his club Marseille have received no official offers for their player, although some enquiries have apparently been made.
Marseille sports director Jose Anigo told the club’s web site:
“The closer we get to the start of the season the less chance Djibril has of leaving,” “He knows the period after which his exit will become impossible.â€
“He has been frank with us, we know he wants to go back to England even though there has been no concrete offer.
“We consider Djibril as someone who’ll still be in Marseille for our season.â€
“If he stays it’ll be very good for us. We wouldn’t be able to replace him at such short notice.”
Recent reports in France are suggesting that Cisse has until the end of this week to arrange a transfer out of the south of France, if he is to move.
We have no idea if Newcastle were ever interested in the player, but there have been several reports over the summer that we were, and he can certainly score goals, and is very fast.
We wonder what happened to bringing 20 year-old Swiss Striker Eren Derdiyok to Tyneside?
Comments welcome - and if you would like a good laugh - watch the Jose video on the Keegan appointment at Newcastle in January - it’s under the videos on the right and so funny.

We dont want him, we dont need him.
He is a good player though.
2 Faustino // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:04
He could do really well for us. Problem is it’s a big COULD.
Give us all a week and I’m sure we’d have him in a heartbeat, but not sure yet.
3 mr_flibbles // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:05
Nope. Not a likely target because he is in his prime now and although he probably will be a decent signing he is not as good as Owen, Martins or Viduka.
No value in signing this player.
4 ginkoh // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:08
I don’t think he will be good asset for us. And we don’t need small striker now.
5 Carlos // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:13
He’s not small.
6 mr_flibbles // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:13
He isnt a small striker. But he is one dimentional. I think if our aim is 10th place next season we are all ready set. probably only those 3-4 quality signings away from making a proper challenge on 6th.
7 filthy mag // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:18
Could he replace Viduka in the holding role?
8 Total Flanker // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:20
With Martins, Owen, Viduka, Smith, Carroll, Ameobi and Zamblera on the books I can’t see us signing any striker unless at least two of those (Smith and Ameobi preferably) move on.

everytime i think of cisse i think of that film unbreakable with sam l jackson and bruce willis…….

realy hope we dont buy him he’s pants i watched marseille every week last season and he scores once in a Blue moon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
12 ELFER // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:31
Basle is asking a price which newcastle do not want to pay for derdiyok, so it’s no wonder that the transfer “failed” for the moment.
the swiss league is already on since last weekend and derdiyok played already…basel has at the moment no interest to sell (they are short on striker due to injuries at the moment) him unless the asked price is tabled
13 Bucks_mag // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:31
don’t want him. He was pants at pool and i don’t know why clubs would still be interested in him
14 maltese geordie // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:31
why dont we sign gomis he ’s a brilliant goal scorer
15 Oga // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:32
Martins and Cisse upfront would be fire. In fact so would Cisse and Owen.

As Eamon Dunphy calls him…
The fourteen million pound clown!
17 Shearer#1 // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:40
Cisse couldn’t hold up a piece of paper. He’s got a terrible 1st touch, a bit like Martins. We need a different type of striker. Gomis, Gudjohnsen, or maybe even Saha on a loan pay per play deal.
18 Davies // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:46
I like him, but I’m not sure if we’d go for him. He’s quick, so I think he would probably be the sort of player we’d go after if Martins went.
Still, it would be interesting to see the two of them up front with Owen in the hole.
19 YellowBelly // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:48
We do not need another stiker.
First
We need a world class or potential world class DM. We have only Butt in that true postion and few that can play in that position.
DM is the most important role on the pitch, it allows other players to get forward and become heroes, like the year Lampard got player of the year was down to Makelele?
Second
We need a central defender with pace. So when our defence pushes up we will not be beat on a silly ball over the top. Can anyone remember Des Walker at forest, thats what we need.
Third/Fourth
Cover/young players for left back and right back
20 chuck // Jul 22, 2008 at 12:57
Could be okay, but does`nt fit the profile (to oold + too expensive)
The writing is on the wall, its a season of make do with what we have and maybe a couple of ” El Cheapos” nothing over£3m. to £5m. and a struggle to avoid relegation.
Hate to be a Cassandra but thats how it looks, simple this guys not going to jeopardize his fortune by incurring heave debt, in which case he either should put the club on the market, or find a wealthy partner.
Its become obvious he cant afford to run the club as a major PL business.
21 The Entertainers // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:00
I personally would like to see another striker, a one that could hold the ball up and Owen and Martins can play off, as we all know The Duke will play about a third of all Toon games.
Cisse is not this player, i dont particularly rate the guy, i know he scored goals in France, but his success was limited in England.
I’m not sure Keegan will sign another striker, even when Shola goes, as he sees Owen and Martins as the goal scorers and The Duke and Smith as the target men……Shame.
22 Michael // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:03
Good player, I think he gets unfair criticism about his time at Liverpool considering he had a terrible leg injury and then was out of favour with Benitez.
The only reason we might sign him is that if martins gets injured we don’t have another striker with much pace (Owen has lost a lot of his pace before anybody suggests him).
23 craig chisholm // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:30
Arron Spear??????????????? whatever happened to him??
ps……cisse is pointless, too many other strikers as it is.
24 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:41
He’s better than Smith and Ameobi!! come on MA and wise get rid of the two losers!!
25 alvin_toon // Jul 22, 2008 at 13:44
I will never forgive his antics against us when he scored against us. He’s not the player we should look at.
26 gorskino10 // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:45
but hes not better than Owen or Martins so no point we need a striker who better or on par with them 2 and Cisse isnt that person.
27 Oga // Jul 22, 2008 at 14:49
So people dont think him & Martins will work because they’re too fast?
Come on please. Adriano is fast……Yakubu is fast….both have partnered Martins successfully before. Why would you even need to replace Viduka when he hasn’t even performed well.
Martins & Cisse or Owen & Cisse would get more goals than any Viduka partnership.
28 Geordie Nick // Jul 22, 2008 at 15:07
dont see how ppl can say we dont need another striker, we do, cisse isnt the striker we need but we definitely need one, owen an martin are the only ones really good enough to start every match, viduka will b ok for backup, smith is terrible, as is shola, carroll has no experience and has shown nothing so far to make anyone think he is goin to make it, and zamblera is too young and inexperienced at he minute.
29 Geordie Nick // Jul 22, 2008 at 15:10
i also dont go along with the fact that players who are simliar cant play together, if your good enough you can play alongside anyone and do well
30 dan_from_france // Jul 22, 2008 at 15:24
he is fast and a good goalscorer in the french league and i personnally wouldnt ,mind him but go for huntelaar buy some with real quality. he is good for marseille and there 1 of the better teams in france. and ther is also niang who plays for them
31 scott9 // Jul 22, 2008 at 15:49
nah i dnt think were intersted i hope we get Eren Derdiyok cause he luks a good player hes a target man has a bit of pace and is at the right age and plus i can tell ed wants him they amount of times he mentions him haha
32 Obafan // Jul 22, 2008 at 16:23
scott9 - I agree with your comment. I would be happy if we sign Derdyiok, but I can’t see it happen. Things look really slow at Newcastle this summer and we have not had that many good news so far.
I am 99% sure that we are not after Cisse, too expensive and we have this type of strikers at the club (Oba), who I think is better than Cisse. We defo need a target man, but I’m afraid KK likes Smith as target man. Oh no, I might not think that Owen or Aba gets injured and that we have to rely on the ‘goalscoring machine’ Smith is.
So far I’m not thrilled about next season and with a starter at Old Trafford, we could start very badly.
I will be very angry if Arshavin went to Spurs, cause we should go for those type of players, cause we have not many players who can create danger out of nothing.
33 Ian // Jul 22, 2008 at 16:31
Would love to see this player at Newcastle, I really rate this player.
He is one of France’s top goalscorers and his yearly average is brilliant, exactly what we need. Unlike Gomis he still scores at the same rate in International and Cup games when the pressure mounts.
I think Cisse could be a top three goalscorer in the premiership, I think he will settle in the premiership after three to five games and he is capable of over shadowing both of our current strikers and I am a big Martins fan, I think Cisse would raise both of their games.
This player is a bit of a madman and his dress sense isnt the best (will stick out like a sore thumb on the quayside) but no player that I have ever seen is such a fitness fanatic and so dedicated and proud to continue to score and perform at the level he does, early last season his fans turned against him because he had a few bad games, they were shouting abuse, he picked himself up and ended up third top goalscorer, not many players have that sort of determination in the game today. Now the fans and the manager are begging him to stay, we should grab him if we have a hope, no other player this good is available at this price. His manager said 36 or 37 goals in a season and a half in an interview where he didnt want him to leave.
If another premiership team buys him then we will be sat wondering why we didnt get him when we had the chance.
If the crowd get behind him he will not want to leave, he likes a friendly crowd and to be important in a team, if he plays on the opposite side to Martins with equal speed and excitement he will be one of the most exciting players on the pitch that we have ever had and our fans are the ones to appreciate that type of play.
I want to see us buy him, we couldnt buy a better player in my opinion.

dan from france is right niang is a good player
35 Anthony // Jul 22, 2008 at 17:08
we need one more striker, but he is definitely not Cisse…
we dont need a striker who made 117 shots but only scored 16 goals…
36 Ian // Jul 22, 2008 at 17:26
Anthony neither of our strikers scored 16 goals.
37 crom-scott // Jul 22, 2008 at 17:27
Hes crap……end of…………..If we sign him Wise and co need sacking………..hes a poor player……anyone who rates him must not watch football.
38 WIGAZ // Jul 22, 2008 at 18:07
Dont want him, dont need him, we have better strikers already at the club! be pointless buy waste of money! would rather see Kevin Davies or Heskey brought in on the cheap! hold ball up well & would play well with owen & oba!
39 devro // Jul 22, 2008 at 18:35
strange this coming up on here and someone told me yesterday they saw cisse in the gate!! i hope we dont sign him tho
40 TOONinFRANCE // Jul 22, 2008 at 20:51
i ould rather see letisier than Cissé or even an donkey would be better up front!!!
41 daiv // Jul 22, 2008 at 22:14
He’s better than Smith. But my granny is better than Smith. Stay in France Cisse. We must find a better £1M player than him. Go on Mike break the bank and buy somebody for £3M. Championship clubs are spending more. Still I suppose you need the dosh to prop up your ailing business.
42 Rab // Jul 23, 2008 at 7:44
How much do you reckon hes worth?
43 Ian // Jul 23, 2008 at 9:21
Rab, his scoring record would say £10-12m
However Cisse is one of those players that has pantomime press following him, his scoring record throughout his career is brilliant almost identical to Owen (overall) ie appearances to goals, however the majority of people who havent watched him play and followed his progress which is very clear from the comments above, that press seems to give those people the impression he is crap and this pulls his price down, his club due to his scoring record are saying £9.5m minimum but there was talk of as little as £6m, that is hellish cheap for a player who consistently scores.
If he has appearances to goals (even though he has a lot of subs) the same as Owen and Owen’s problem is his lack of appearances not goals per appearances we are mad if we do not take him. Would you take Owen on a three year contract from another club for £6-£9.5m and £78,000 per week? No thinking needed for me.
The only way to judge a player is watch him and this is one player I have followed (amongst others) and I know the popular (crap) press are wrong, look at the better foreign football press they all rate him and thought the French coach was making the mistake of his career missing him off the team altogether.
Cisse is in the same position that Anelka was in a few years ago, much better than his press, if we can attract this player he is by far the best player we could hope for and the best value by far.
This is a gift horse.
44 Rab // Jul 23, 2008 at 9:38
£6m seems very cheap for a reasonable player never mind a quality player. I think a few people look at the way he reacted at the liverpool game and how he dresses rather than how he plays. Id rather be playing this guy than the likes of Smith or an unfit Viduka.
45 Ian // Jul 23, 2008 at 10:06
Rab, I agree, I cant see anyone leaping to join Newcastle that scores more than 16 goals per season, we arent going to spend £15m plus and 100k per week on another striker so we arent going to get the next Torres.
Cisse has baggage but none of it is fitness or playing problems it is only the fact that the press like a pantomime ‘baddie’ and Cisse seems to have the look to suit the part.
I think this is Cisse’s perfect age, now and the next four years, it all seems to be coming together perfectly, he has the potential to be one of our best ever players his pride and discipline is similar to Cantona, unreal, he will not like it if he is second top scorer at our club and will develop himself to make sure he is top, it is in his personality, the other strikers will have to raise their game to keep up, he also will not settle for less than top ten in the premiership player table and probably will have a first year target of somewhere around top six, but will deny it if the press asks him.
His discipline will rub off on other players in the team.
46 rogerbig // Jul 23, 2008 at 12:31
I think he would be a good signing by the fact his goal scoring ratio is 1goal in every 2 games. His scoring ability is even better than Martins. He is a proven goal scorer. I don’t see why we shouldn’t sign him.
47 Ian // Jul 23, 2008 at 18:17
rogerbig, to me that is all we should be looking at, fast, furious, 6ft and scores goals, he also sells merchandise and puts spectators in seats.
We might be too late, Man City are in for him and they are right next to his home in Cheshire.
