Newcastle Will Be Fittest Side In Premiership

July 24th, 2008 · 88 Comments

One of the things that was really surprising when Kevin Keegan came back to Newcastle in January, was that he thought the squad just wasn’t fit enough.

kevin-keegan-in-training.gif

Kevin Keegan - training with the lads
It seems  under Sam Allardyce the training wasn’t too physically exerting, and certainly Damien Duff thought the lads were just not as fit as they should be.

But this season Kevin Keegan is determined that while his side may not be the most skillful, they will be the fittest and his goal on fitness is to make Newcastle United the fittest team in the premier league.

Keegan has designed a pre-season training plan which is very tough, and when the lds started out a couple of week sago, they had double training sessions very day, and some of the burgeoning fitness could be seen last Saturday from players like James Milner, who of course can (and does) run all day.

And the fact that Kevin may use James in central midfield next season seems to make an awful lot of sense, when we seem to have ample wingers, and James might just turn into a top midfielder, hopefully along the lines of a certain Rob  Lee.

Newcastle also have two new fitness coaches in former player and local lad Robbie Elliott, and Mark Hulse, who have both joined Keegan’s staff.

Kevin said:

“The boys have been working really hard.”

“We might not be the most skilful side in the Premier League because there are some great sides and we might not have the biggest squad, but there’s no reason why we won’t be as fit as everyone else.”

“I told all the staff when I came in that one thing you have to be in the Premier League is very, very fit and the onus has been on that.”

We’ll see how the lads do against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, but we still haven’t signed anybody, and we’ll need to get busy on that front, with Keegan wanting two new defenders in, before the squad leaves for Mallorca next week.

Comments welcome.

this is good news last season we would fade away in games but hopfully now we will see theses games out

  • 4 mr_flibbles // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:11

What on earth was Allardyce suppose to have done then? That was suppose to be like his main objective to get the squad fit. Looks like Sam didn’t do anything at all now.

    Sam Allardyce take a Bow.

  • 5 Nemo // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:14

Dont hold your breath kevin, its about time everyone woke up to the fact ashley has no money to spend and only second raters will arrive, if any. I cant believe people think ashley has a first team plan to spend big. If it wasnt for the toon fans dreaming of big names, none would have been mentioned. The club are silent cos ashley has had his breath taken away by the size of the task. Kk is the only solice in what is a total shambles for a club with a fan base second to none.!

  • 6 domtoon // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:22

Way to go Nemo. You have successfully crushed my morning.

  • 7 Stardust // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:24

Nemo - I take it you get your name from feeding of scraps of information the press throw out to the fishes - you ignore the facts like the Modric deal because it suits your argument - therefore we no one can debate things with you - your stance is at best short sighted and worst malevolent - are you FF in disguise?

You know nothing so stop ranting on without foundation or we will net you up and feed you to the Black Cats

  • 8 Punk Skunk // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:28

    Hadaway nemo!..

  • 9 Spyro // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:30

Stardust i wouldnt read too much into what new bloggers say, half the time it is the same spurs fan who constantly changes his name on here. He epitimises the word ’sad’, he really does.

By the way, this is the REAL Spyro, not the spud who has been impersonating me recently on this AND other sites. I can prove it aswell if anyone is in doubt.

  • 10 Spyro // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:32

hows it going punk skunk, i predicted a couple signings by Friday, looks like i may have been way off eh :D

  • 11 Stardust // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:32

In opposition to Nemo Anyone does anyone else think this might be the case?

If Ashley and co are looking at the Rule 17 implications in detail and planning an all out assault on getting players in this way - Clubs like Spurs and Man City who are spending big bucks on transfer fees could end up busto if their players move on and if Rule 17 is enforced by those players. As huge transfer fees in is no longer balanced with huge transfer fees out.

Again more power to us in the longer term - I am not saying dont sign players at all before some jump on the bandwagon - but signing players at the right price / wages / terms is a bigger priority than at any time in the game.

We could see some big name Club casualties in the coming years.

Unlike Nemo I wont decry the club - I think we are in the best shape in years - we now just need some more players lol

  • 12 geordie jock // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:32

Not the sort of article we want to see Nemo but you tell it as you see it and i totally agree with you. The club is a shambles . Just what is Wise etc doing on the transfer front. If there is money to spend why are we not signing players ?.

  • 13 Sav // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:32

Well, with Ben Haim following Sidwell, once again following the money, this time to Villa and Citeh its time we took a look at ourselves. How we laughed a couple of years back when every time the likes of Everton had a target, we waded in with a big wedge to grab them. And what did we buy that was so great? Mercenaries.

Now we are in the same boat as Everton and the challenge is to do what they have done and put in place better structure and rely on the reputation of a well-run club with a good ethos and top coaches. Sure, with our support, the money will start to flow back in eventually. 52000 faithful will see to that. But by that time I hope we will be rid of all the excess baggage and a rep as the loony toons of the Premiership - the club that spent big but won nowt.

  • 14 iceman // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:34

It’s me iceman, just popped oot for a spin & a loaf o’bread!..

  • 20 OLIVER // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:49

firstly spyro’s name appears in blue.

City and spurs are spending big and the rewards for qualifying for the champs league are enormous(if they get there). The better players that the two teams are signing will attract better players to there clubs. With arsenal and liverpool not looking like they have a lot of money, this is the season to spend big and take their champs league places. I dont think there will be a better opportunity.

How anyone can claim we are better off than the clubs splashing money is beyond me. If we finish in the bottom half of the table we will never attract the big players. Guthrie may well be our future and turn into a top player but we need players for this season. If we are near the bottom come january is ashley going to be able to attract players to push us on or will it be to late.

I am dissapointed how the transfer window has gone and it is made worse to see our rivals spending money.

What has happened to the sky money?

  • 21 Marty // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:53

    NEMO,Fan base second to none??????
We have Brilliant home n away support but Liverpool,Arsenal n Man U have a fan base many times bigger n that is why they have money to spend on the best players.
We Certainly have the most Faithful supporters n the Funniest ;-)

  • 25 chinzaknuk // Jul 24, 2008 at 11:01

I think we need to trust KK and MA at the moment, i think it’s plain to see that things are changing at NUFC, and we need to sit tight. You either believe in your team and the club or you don’t, but isn’t one of the great things about football and supporting your club, is the dreaming of what might be, like Oba sticking 3 passed Manure, with Jonas whipping in the crosses for 2 of them and Guthie rampaging from the centre circle and playing a slide rule pass thru to Oba for his hatrick #!&*()ing YESSS!!

OK so it’s a dream, but i reckon the only way dreams like that will come true is when we have a squad of players who are not just big names and quality players or who cost us millions, but who actually believe that playing for Newcastle is the most important thing in their working lives.

KK’s philosopy, that i think we all admired, was that if the opposition scores 3 then we simply have to score 4, and the thing is we saw that in the way the team used to play. Remember the game against Leicester when Shearer and the team just never gave up. How long is it since we’ve seen that sort of attitude from the whole team over god knows how many seasons now.

So it’s great to see the attitude of Jonas and Guthrie, they’ve both got quality about them but they so far seem to show that great attitude, hopefully in the mould of Habib, who for me is the perfevt Newcastle player, he’s skillful, determined and passionate about what he does, and a great professional too.

Anyway i think we’ll only buy the players that KK believes wants to play for Newcastle and you can’t put a price on that.

So let the mercenaries slope off to Benfica or Spurs or whereever Ashavin ends up, haven’t we learnt our lesson yet that just throwing money at the problem has rarely resulted in very many decent players coming to Newcastle.

  • 26 OLIVER // Jul 24, 2008 at 11:01

Sorry to say, but NEMO has it right.
I know its hard to accept, but by now anyone with a brain in his head should have recognised
    the obvious.
As for the Modric defence, its simply hearsay.
Yeah supposed to have made bids for all kinds of people , the list is endless, but the proof is Guthrie= £1.5 or £2m. and a reduced price Spidey.
So get real folks or set yourselves up for a dissapointing reality come the end of the transfer window.

  • 31 filthy mag // Jul 24, 2008 at 11:11

Ashley is a shrewd business man. He wouldnt have got to where he is now without knowing what he needs to do. Dont forget we have no debt now thanks to MA. That puts us in a stable financial position. You cant build an empire without laying the foundations. So he has secured the club, now he will look at getting his staff to build a team, based on our current playing position (no CL or European football). Once we have established ourselves as contenders again, then he will invest further. This is of course speculation, however, it seems a perfectly feasible explanation for the apparent stagnancy on the transfer market.

Incidently, how many poker players tell you what cards they need to play a decent hand?

  • 32 iceman // Jul 24, 2008 at 11:12

chuck i hope your wrongbut im leaning to your way of thinking, were not going to be in the top 6 if ashley isnt going to splash the cash, spurs man city will take 5 and 6,then theres villa and everton

  • 38 Spyro // Jul 24, 2008 at 11:19

Spurs wont get fifth, Pompey and Everton will both finish higher than them. Not sure about City with there new manager and all. Villa might be a dark horse this year. Spurs will finish around 7th or 8th this yr, especially since Berba and Keane want no part of their future. Levy is probably going to start crying again when they dump Arsenals little brother for a proper top 4 team.

hope this means we will over run manchester united haha, wishful thinking i guess

  • 42 chinzaknuk // Jul 24, 2008 at 11:25

Iceman, I think we need to build a team again and not just a bunch of cast off’s and mercenaries we’ve had for far too long, who aspire to nothing more than themselves and sod it if things aren’t going to well in the match.

I don’t think the problem is MA not backing KK, it’s that we are a team who finished 13th in the league, no European football to offer……..how many top players are going to be attracted to that……….just the ones who see the big bucks that we’d have to offer to even get them interested in the first place.

We need to get a season under our belts, qualify for Europe, attract other players and keep progressing.

  • 43 filthy mag // Jul 24, 2008 at 11:27

iceman, I predict that this season will see the team play out of their skin, hence the fitness regime. This wont neccesarily gaurantee european football, but it will put us back on the map. This will be the best advert for players to want to come to the club. I feel that this season will be a time for proving and then either mid season or at the end we shall see some more extravagant spending.

  • 68 filthy mag // Jul 24, 2008 at 12:20

As i said previously, we need to build from the bottom up. This means taking the existing team and making them the best they can possibly be. If we still have deficienses then they can be addressed by new signings. But until we are performing regularly at our best then no amount of new players will make the team better. Lets improve what we already have. The new fitness regime that KK is pushing is a big step towards this goal. (Sorry no pun intended!)

  • 69 Punk Skunk // Jul 24, 2008 at 12:21

Where are nevertons ‘class’ players, they got into europe…So…

    …Just an eg…

  • 70 CRAIGG // Jul 24, 2008 at 12:23

Punk skunk i agree to a point

Reading finished above us in 06-07 and look what happened last season.

Wigan and West Ham finished in the top 10 and both got to a cup final in 05-06 but both just escaped relegation on the last day in 06-07

However, Portsmouth have bought well so far and possibly will get SWP, Kaboul and Shorey so i expect them to finish higher again.

If Villa sign Friedel, Bentley, Zigic and a couple of others i would expect them to be in europe again.

But i dont think Everton, Spurs or Blackburn will be a patch on their sides last season.

So europe aint out of the question, Hopefully

  • 71 SwedeEric // Jul 24, 2008 at 12:24

If there is one thing my mates that suport other clubs always have a laugh about, it´s when we buy all this expensive players, that then turn in to shite, Luque, Boumsong, Kluivert, Viana… Glad that time seems to bo over!

  • 72 OLIVER // Jul 24, 2008 at 12:29

Dont you think most teams have a good fitness regime. Do you honestly think kks new fitness regime we qualify us for a uefa place. Ridiculous.

His fitness regimes didnt work out to well at fulham, city or help england. Are we just clutching at straws cos we can see that *********** is happening at the club and at this rate we will finish below boro and sunderland.

I am very vocal at games and if we havent signed any top class players (not shit like guthrie and jonas) i will be calling for ashley to resign at our first game and hope every other fan joins me. I know we dont have a right to finish in the top 8-9 but i want to see the same ambition as keane is showing down the road.

  • 73 Punk Skunk // Jul 24, 2008 at 12:33

Craigg, y’know what i’m saying man?..
…Things change VERY quickly in this game!..
…Nothing is nailed on, is it?..& anyway those players may not go to those teams, so it could all be different again…We may even get some of ‘em, we just don’t know…& i think that’s what is gettin’ to some fans…They’re used to knowin’ too much about dealin’s from the likes of ffs…It’s a new era, fank thuck!..

  • 74 iceman // Jul 24, 2008 at 12:46

im glad all transfers are kept secret, but we have to spend money on quality, i agree dont go and spend big bucks on flops but we need to spend money to push on,theres 1 player i would like to see at the toon and thats jimmy bullard he wouldnt cost alot

  • 75 CRAIGG // Jul 24, 2008 at 12:48

Thats what i was trying to say those sides fortunes changed so quickly

We dont need massive names look at Bobbys side 11th, 11th then 4th

The summer before 01-02 we signed:

    Robert -£10m
    Bellamy- £6m
    Elliott -Free
    Distin-Loan

Viirtual unknowns to most and look how they turned out, A few players in the right positions can make a huge difference, Who says Guthrie cannot be the new Rob Lee or Gutierrez the new David Ginola a couple more in and we may surprise people.

I agree with not splashing loads on overrated player who havent got ambitions other than money.

I can see Spurs, Everton or Blackburn dropping back to midtable, Look at Bolton who qualified for europe 3 seasons in a row under pop “n” fresh.

Cant buy your way into Europe, tell that to Chelsea ,L`pool and Man. U.
MA knows what he is doing! , he sure does ,but its going to result in a relegation fight.
Teams like Everton are bidding for the likes of
Moutinho, £18m., Spurs, all of the teams in the top ten are strengthening their sides with big buys.
We in turn are bidding on the Guthries, Warnocks and cut price Argies.
Ah! but we offered £16m for Modric and big money for Arshavin and the Turkish kid.
    Hearsay thats all !

  • 79 sirjasontoon // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:12

I think keegan will get them fit but surely even if they are supersonic fit the teams that are able to rotate players (ie big squads)will remain far fitter over a season as they will be in better physical shape.

A few knocks here and there and suspensions we will be fielding our junior players 8 weeks into the season.

Glad we didn’t get chimpbongo thought : )

I can’t believe how shallow people are. It’s like the only way a player is worth anything is if we pay alot of money for him…. this club has a history of buying overpaid dross.

All these other clubs are jumping off the transfer bridge to commit economic suicide….because they jumped, does that mean we have to?

Do you remember everyone’s optimism before the last season because our squad looked good? well we have shipped out fringe players - and we are bringing more first teamers in - our team is getting better from what it was last year.

We were flying at the end of last season. Alan Smith managed to single handedly ruin the game against Chelsea we were dominating while starting against Everton you saw what that did - apart from those two games Keegan had us playing wonderfully. He managed that transformation during the season - imagine what he will have been able to do with a preseason.

Lastly, Mike Ashley does not/should not/will not make a trophy signing. To do that would tell the transfer market that we haven’t really changed. “It’s always darkest before the dawn.” (Batman: The Darknight ;) )

PS - Aston Villa - about to lose their best player
Blackburn - about to lose their best three players
Man City - Just spent 20 million pounds on an unknown quantity
Tottenham - bought one central midfielder and a winger who demanded a huge payrise despite getting a mere 28 appearences and 3 goals.

These teams have spent alot of money on 3 players who are likely not to be worth the money

Oliver, I didnt say that being super fit would gain us a place in europe, what I intimated at is that by starting at the bottom and systematically improving the team would ultimately lead to an overall improvement in our end of season position in the league table. We have all see the lack lustre effort that was played at the earlier part of the last season. Had we continued at that pace we would surely have been relegated.

It took a few weeks for the Keegan effect to take hold, but he eventually managed to get them motivated to play harder. Once that was managed the results started to come. So clearly, by concentrating on work output which is under pinned by fitness, the development of the basics should help us on the way to European football again.

For all those that think only big money signings are top players i have 1 question .How much did we pay for Habib Beye ? The player that a lot of fans thought of as our best signing last season.

exactly Harrier, it is easy to see OLIVER is fernando. Just read the guys comments, ridiculous.

    OLIVER
” am very vocal at games and if we havent signed any top class players (not shit like guthrie and jonas) i will be calling for ashley to resign at our first game and hope every other fan joins me”

oh get real! Your not at all convincing. pathetic little fool trying to turn more fans against MA. Your sad fernando. really, really sad. So easy to identify aswell.

so shortsighted. people don’t realize when you have an owner willing to shell out millions upon millions, transfers become an afterthought, and shear numbers and the total transfer kitty become the top priority as opposed to quality, something we’ve lacked for years.

this site used to be home to those that are really behind newcastle (supporters) instead of the “new age” posers who only like to see results rather than progress.

it’s an utter fallacy that everyone thinks money is the only thing that wins matches. consider everton, aston villa, and even west ham (who are shit and finished above us last year). minus the team element, our players would appear much better than theirs, but our team needs work.. which is what keegan is focusing on.

As if as everyone else says KK, not the fittest ed? that’s a big call.

not convinced with milner in the middle of the park, not sure he has the passing ability and is good enough at reading the game for there.
