Taylor: Gutierrez Will Be Great For Us

July 24th, 2008 · 453 Comments

Young Steven Taylor is becoming a regular at talking to the press it seems,  and today he talks with the Newcastle Evening Chronicle about his new colleague, Argentine Jonas Gutierrez.

jonas-gutierrez-65.jpg

Jonas Gutierrez - seems a great player and quite a character

Steven thinks the fighting qualities of the Argentine international Jonas Gutierrez will instantly win over the Newcastle faithful, once they get a look at the new singing.

Of course Steven is renowned for his own do-or-die attitude in a Newcastle United shirt, and when he plays for the team, you can tell he grew up in the area just worshiping the club - like a lot of the rest of us.

Steven is himself really looking forward to this coming season, when we hope he will cement his place at the heart of the Newcastle defense, with some consistent and dominant performances.

Gutierrez was well liked, to say the least, by Real Mallorca fans and apparently he was even nicknamed Forrest Gump because the player simply doesn’t stop running during games.

That’s a good sign, and when we have Milner and Gutierrez playing together, it will be interesting to see how many combined miles the two of them will get through in a game.

Taylor, the England Under-21 captain told the Evening Chronicle:

“He puts himself about as well, and one thing Newcastle fans like, is someone that works hard and puts a few tackles in.”

“If he can do that, he’ll be great for us.”

Taylor will again probably play the full game at Doncaster Rovers’ Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday afternoon, after putting in a solid game against Hartlepool last Saturday.

Newcastle will still be without Senegal international Abdoulaye Faye, and Cameroon international Geremi, who are still having some rest after their World Cup qualifying games in the summer.

And Habib Beye, who was the Newcastle Player of the Season, in his very first campaign last year, is still not 100% fit due to calf problems, and wisely will not be risked.

Comments welcome.

Ashley needs to start spending money!! NOW!!
reports are suggesting that Reyes, has turned down NUFC because of personal terms (wages)!!
If we aren’t carefull we will be in a relegation fight!!

  • 4 iceman // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:33

i dont know about anyone else but the silence from the toon is killing me like,i know silence is golden but come on…

  • 5 iceman // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:35

reyes is off to monoco fee agreed

  • 6 Cyprus-Toon // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:35

Lets hope he doesn’t get injured in his first match & is out for the season same as Owen was :(

We seriously need more players coming in soon or we’re gonna get screwed over big time later on, so much for Ashley spending money in the transfer window :(

link on skysports about reyes to monaco! not sure if this is a bad thing a kk player maybe but i recon there is better players out there for similar money??

  • 8 iceman // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:39

ashley will sink the toon if he dosnt get his head sorted,we need to spend money, not on flops but good players like bullard it wont cost a lot to get him

  • 9 VeryNorthernMag // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:41

    HATEPRAWNSANDWICHES:

I totally agree. As things stand, we have little chance of putting up a fight at Old Trafford. I’m worried that we’ll be humiliated again.

In my view, the squad has not been improved at all. This needs to change and very soon!

If we play the season with the current squad, we will be in a relegation dogfight. I can’t think of a Premier League team who we are far better than.

  • 10 Shearer#1 // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:45

Reyes is a class player. He was brilliant at Arsenal & now he’s going to play in front of 7,000 supporters at Monaco instead of 52,000 at SJP because Ashley won’t pay him the wages he wants. I’m getting sick of this. Arshavin, Arda, Aimar & now Reyes. Come back Freddy Shepherd! All is forgiven!

  • 11 Hatty // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:47

It actually says in that article that Reyes “has refused to confirm” that he’s turned us down. Tbh, I’d be suprised if we’re even looking at him.

  • 12 Davies // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:47

Everyone panic!!! We didn’t sign stroppy Arsenal cast off Reyes who we probably weren’t interested in anyway.

If that Mike Ashley keeps clearing our debts and running our club better than it has been for years I’m going to be after his head on a plate!!!!

  • 13 iceman // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:48

we all thought ashley was going to take us forward but he is holding us back he trying to run the club like his sports direct buy out of date stock on the cheep

  • 14 Davies // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:48

Shearer#1 - Have a word mate. These people aren’t staying away because of the money, they’re staying away because we’re a mid table club with no European football to offer.

    Stop blaming Ashley FFS.

  • 15 Davies // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:50

I think I’m going to drop out of this blog today. Idiot syndrome seems to have taken hold.

I suppose I’ll have to wait until we sign somebody good and you’re all licking the owner’s balls again.

VNM - I have been saying this for months now! we are down there with the worst of the teams in the premiership! everyone thinks MA is our saviour! total BS!! he is out for number one and he will only spend as little as possible! last season he only spent £8million, jan nothing and so far £4.5million on two players!!! ASHLEY MUST GO! ASHLEY MUST SELL UP!! ASHLEY OUT! BEFORE HE DISTROYS OUR GREAT CLUB!!!

  • 18 iceman // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:52

  • 20 Jambon // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:54

Jees people, are you all for real?

    “Come back Shepherd”???

We are finally being ran properly like a business and people complain. We were days away from serious financial trouble when Ashley came in. He stablised the debt, appointed proper people in proper positions and began to ran the club properly.

Now people compain because we won’t pay over the odds any more. Smith, Duff, Emre, Boumsong, they were all big buys on huge wages, haven’t set the world alight have they?

The only player confirmed that we have been in for and not got was Luka Modric, and we offered big money and big wages. Everything else is press rumour and supposed fans jumping on it and getting on the backs of Ashley, Wise, KK et al is doing us no good at all.

Support the team for gods sake!

  • 21 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:55

HPS stop doom mongering - nobody above us or below us has strengthened enough to move us back that many points.

  • 22 iceman // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:59

at the end of the day ashley dosnt give a toss about us fans he just bought the club to make a profit thats why he payed off the debt and thats why he has been trying to sell the club ever since,he will not give kk a big transfer budget or pay players big wages, hes doing all this to make the club look good to posible buyers..

  • 23 Rab // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:59

    Davies, I agree.

So many fickle people moaning about MA dragging the club down. What utter rubbish. Im sure we will spend when we find a decent player that would like to play for NUFC!

  • 24 Chris // Jul 24, 2008 at 13:59

Reyes would never have come to the Toon FFS. He whinged about the weather in London so how could he hack it up here.

A lot of so called fans are going to have egg on their faces when the transfer market closes. Ashley will come good, give the bloke a chance.

We don’t need the likes of reyes at the club, we need hungry players who have yet to prove themselves, not players who would live off their past glory years.

Some fans treat every day of the transfer window like Xmas day, and when they don’t get anything they spit their dummy’s out. I would love us to get a few players in quickly, but if it isn’t possible then we’ll just have to be patient.

There are hundreds of reasons why transfers don’t happen overnight, everyones got to be happy. We will get players in, it’s a must, we can’t possibly expect to start the season with the tiny squad we have. If we have a couple of injuries, we’d be up sh*t creek, and I’m sure Ashley and co are well aware of that, but I’m willing to have faith in what they are doing. If we haven’t got the players in by the and of the window, then I’ll have my say, but I’m still confident we’ll be fine.

  • 25 Jakey Toon // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:00

    Hate prawn sandwiches
    Your a total muppet!!!

  • 26 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:03

HPS - You will ruin our great club by demanding he leave.

Aston Villa - poised to sell Barry (their best player) - no incomings
Blackburn - lost their manager - poised to sell Bentley (their best player) - no incomings
Man City - Paid 20 million pounds for one striker - have done nowt else.
Tottenham - Stole Modric - bought dos Santos who is a prima donna at the age of 19, wasn’t good enough to break into barca’s side so he won’t exactly be world class.

We have Stoke, Hull, and West Brom below us.
Sunderland’s transfer activity consists of buying Tottenham’s rubbish - whom only finished one place ahead of us.

Middlesbrough are below us - wtf have they done? Bought 2 unknown midfielders and that is all.

Wigan - Fulham - am I getting anywhere? Why in god’s name will we be in a relegation battle unless we spend 30 odd million pounds one one player who could get injured for the season in his first game???

  • 27 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:04

or iceman he decided that he would run the club the same way arsenal, tottenham etc have been doing for the last 5 years so that we don’t end up in financial disarray in the next season.

  • 28 Leo // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:04

lets all panic as davies has said, aghhhh i dont know what to do, aghhh we need to sign messi and ronaldo otherwise we are doomed…

im not really panicing that was me being a tart. im sure keegan will have us up to scratch and we will improve on last season, all i want is to see better football

  • 29 Sun'lun's Burnin' // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:05

    Shearer #1 & HPS:

Take your head for a shit mate!!! If FFS & co were still running our club we wud be in championship and -30 points for financial irregularities and going bust!!!

Ashley has saved our club along with Chris Mort and made it into a viable business like all sucessful football clubs are. comments like yours are absolutley brainless!!

As for signings, there is plently of time! what is the point in panic buying to shut idiots like you up when ud probs moan the day after that they wernt good enough!

  • 30 ObaFan2 // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:05

  • 31 Geordie Nick // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:06

harrier- spurs have actually, and other teams may not have strangthened that much but we have a weaker squad now than last season

  • 32 dsr // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:06

maybe some of you should just go sit down and chill out a bit. we dont want reyes, we probably werent after him. who cares if we arent getting him. its mid july, theres plenty of time, loads of other teams havent really signed anyone. we bid 16m squid for a single player in june, and mike ashley has spent multi-millions on the club even if those millions were spent on things like the academy and the scouting team. i’m sorry if i’m in a minority, but i’m just fed up of hearing people whinge on about the lack of signings and saying things like ‘ashley out!’. seriously, just because he hasnt gone out and snapped up half a dozen internationals doesnt mean ANYTHING. I get enough from the f*****g media in terms of doom and gloom, and its bad enough having to read their made up garbage. Clearly some of you have fallen for it, and are now whipping yourselves up into a frenzy, but could you just spare a thought for those of us who visit this site for a BREAK from the anti-nufc biased press? Some of us just want a bit of news, and some rational debate..

  • 33 Leo // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:09

harrier you make a great point, imagine we go out and sign diego for 15-20mil and he alike luque gets injured in his first game i remember that injury i was sitting just above in the stands and you could see the leg muscle thingy rip LITERALY

yes I can hear what most are say’n but Im sick of all the false promises and all the players we have been linked with snub us because of money!! open your eyes, smell the coffee! because this season will be the same as the last!!
and being a supporter! watching us go from one extreme to another! im very very worried that we end up either close or relegated! all other clubs are spending! because they no they have to!

  • 37 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:12

Geordie Nick - How? We let go of Troisi, Ramage, Carr, Rozenhal, and Emre. I doubt they combined to a single first teamer in the amount appearences they had.

We brought in Guthrie and Gutierrez who have a chance of actually contributing to the first team. So, how did we get weaker???

On spurs - they have sold a bunch of dross and bought one decent player and one unknown quantity the same way we have, except we paid less.

  • 38 broon ale // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:12

bored with this transfer window and bored debating daft topics.

it’s too hot, i am stuck at work and i need some fresh orange juice and a packet of crisps!

    lets start a new debate;

    carling, stella or fosters?

  • 39 iceman // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:13

harrier, mike ashley needs to understand that if we offer good wages players will come, thats life..but we need to start spending money, look at the scum they have money to spend so why havnt us,we have missed out on some good players all because of the fee or wages.

  • 40 MAG PIE // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:14

Didn’t Taylor sign a new contract recently? Why is he moonlighting for the Chronicle. He’s in it nearly every day. If we kidnap him maybe they will have to report a signing or two instead.

  • 41 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:15

HPS - open your eyes!!!!!! Nobody is spending! There have been four transfers for the teams we need to compete with! Four! Villa and Blackburn are getting weaker in fact! Why do you think everyone is getting better than us???

The press linked us to 300 players and we signed 2 they had never mentioned. Does that not make you think the press might be wrong about us getting rejected by players? Or that they may have no idea who we are going after???

  • 42 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:15

Thanks MAG PIE - some of us can see what is happening!!

  • 43 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:16

iceman they spent 10 million on Chimbonda and Tainio - we have spent 5 on Gutierrez and Guthrie - I think we got a hell of a better deal.

  • 46 filthy mag // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:18

iceman, didnt we offer Modric more money than spurs and still he went to them? We are currently a mid league club. Once we have prooved ourselves otherwise, I dont think money will make any difference. Besides do we want players that will come just for the money?

  • 47 ToonDerry // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:18

ya did we all not see the 18 million bid that we had put in for modric, that shows MA is willing to spend but only on the right players.REYES what a joke would have jus caused trouble.

  • 48 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:18

Of course nobody wants to debate the facts - they would rather live in their foxholes of speculation - waging war against the owner because he hasn’t bought us ronaldinho or messi

  • 49 Geordie Nick // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:18

harrier- we’ve let 6 players go and brought in 2, thats how we’re weaker.
and as far as spurs go there on decent player as u say, is much better than the one we bought, and ther one unkown quantity is also a lot better than the one we bought, anybody who says the wudnt rather we bought modric and dos santos is either a liar of knows f*uk all

  • 50 MAG PIE // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:19

harrier is right - no-one has really made any big moves in the transfer market yet. The worry is that Keegan did say that he wanted new bodies in asap for a full pre-season and the fact that they are not in yet does SUGGEST that we MAY not have been succesful in attracting the names we were after. I get a sense that we may now be looking down the list.

  • 51 nightfall // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:20

c’mon guy…just chill…at the end of the season we played well..that tells us we have quality and all we needed was good motivator… the squad we have now is better than the one we started last season with..so don’t panic… ‘cos of ashley we’re not playing in the 2nd division… and i’m sure he won’t let KK down..he’ll get us players, but…we’re searching for more than just quality (we don’t want barton2, some money garbbing idiots, or someone who’s not loyal)…and that’s a hard task..so just wait…give them time… ;)

p.s.: you want achieve anything by crying like a little girl :)

its true, some of you boys need to chil the ^&&* out! Constant bickering and moaning, I bet you the ones that boo and shout obsene things at the game when the likes of ameobi play! Well take a back seat for once! I like ‘DSR’ come on here for a bit of news and a rational debate, not slagging
    matches!

Be patient, you should know they way these things work with the decent players that we as a club will courting, we want a clubs player, they dont want too sell, we give them an offer, they then have to find a replacement before theres any chance they can leave! Movement is slow but the best situations take time to build! KK’s a bright guy and he knows what he wants, if he wasnt going to get it he would have made his thoughts known!

It’s difficult when things downt happen at the rate we all want them too but after all guys……..thats footy! Afer all we can still live in hope

Im just fed up seeing us lose out on players because of money!! there has to be give and take!! we need money to improve! all our ex players are commenting on the fact we need money to spend!!

  • 60 brownrob // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:25

I think Mike just wants the club stable before he starts investing into it, it normally takes 18 months for any new business to make a profit, and the toon was making huge losses becasuse of Fat Fred Shepherd, who took huge loans out to pay for the likes of Owen, not his own money, and lets also not forget Fred just milked the club to fatten his own bank balance

Compare this to Mike, who has invested 100m of his own money to clear debt he didnt know of, debt created by mr Shepherd, it makes sense to pay the debt off to stop the crazy interest payments to be made

I just wonder if some of the people here are just spurs fans in disguise…

The club will be invested in, Id be worried if MA started throwing huge money at names who were just that, lets just be grateful that some of the fans arent running the club…

  • 61 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:26

Geordie Nick - they don’t do much only if you make the following assumptions -

    1. That it’s a bad thing to try to get good deals instead of paying over the odds.
    2. That we actually need to spend lots of money to get our team competing.
    3. That I actually care how much we spend and not how well the team performs

My point is that we have found cheap gems. So why do I care if we spend lots of money? Some players are waaaay over valued - so why should we pay that kind of money for them?

  • 62 reilly // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:27

i think all this debate about ashley has to be looked at in depth,me thinks ashley bought the club to sell on but carnt find a buyer.

  • 63 MAG PIE // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:27

    Controversial (but not racist)

In an ideal world I would like a team of geordies.

Failing that a mix of English and Scots

Of course, I loved watching the likes of Ginola, Nobby etc but my preference would be for a predominantly British team.

Harper, Ramage, Taylor, Evans (baa), Bridge, Milner, Carrick, Guthrie, Duff, Owen, Carroll.

    I now await the abuse.

  • 64 Geordie Nick // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:27

im not saying ashley needs to go or anything lyk tht because i think hes put a good foundation in place for the future of the club, but he still has to hurry up and start spending cos at the end of the day wat is the future of the club without the present?

  • 67 Geordie Nick // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:30

Can you trust the press to print the truth and reality?

Do you know how much we have bid and who we have bid after so far?

If you answered no to all three, how do you know that Mike Ashley is holding us back?

  • 70 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:33

Guthrie could be a huge star in the making…

How much did Fabregas cost? Oh wasnt he a huge star before he came and cost £45m? No…

What about Gael Clichy? How much did he cost? £200k, he was in the world team of the year before he came eh?

We got Guthrie for £1m and Gutierrez for £2m, would you guys rather cost £8m each? Mike Ashley and his team is just doing what they should do, do good business, Spurs seem to be the Newcastle of old, Newcastle has moved forward

Oh and Everton… Tim Cahill, megastar before he went to Goodison, as was Arteta, Moyes big buy Yakubu didnt turn out to be the best value did he?

  • 77 OLIVER // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:38

Just because fabregas was cheap and turned into a superstar doesnt mean it will happen with guthrie. In my opinion he is average at best and wont take the club forward. I think it will be a long hard season no matter who else comes in. Players will look to see who we have in our squad before joining and i doubt they will be to impressed. I’m not!

Top 4 haven’t spent money though. I don’t think you will ever agree with me - but what it comes down to is :

    1. you don’t know whats going on behind the scenes so you can only guess. That means you are blaming Mike Ashley cause…he is the easiest target? I don’t know

    2. the other teams in the league are in the same position as us

    3. We had an Underperforming squad last season who could easily turn it around

    4. Keegan knows what and how he needs to strengthen the team

    5. Don’t forget that this club is in a difficult financial climate - the football team is not in its own little bubble - credit crunch and other things effects everything

  • 86 micepie // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:49

This is great, though I’m sure most of us are impatient when seeing articles about the players we have already signed because we want to see real news about NEW names!

    @HPS,
Arsenal are just buying Nasri, but they are like a garage sale selling Hleb and maybe Adebayor and Van Persie with Fabregas is linked away.
ManUre… they are in the middle of some fights so their morale is dropping. As now, they have just sign Petrucci from Roma (according to Setanta).
Liverpool are signing a lot of players, selling a lot of players, but they never have a PL team. They can just play against teams outside of PL.
Chelski, I have nothing to say if they can really buy Kaka’ for 100M Euro, but it’s just because of Abramovich and proofs can tell you Chelski are wasting a lot of players (i.e. a grave for good players)

They have unnecessarily big squads because they want to win, but they are living under debts. They are not improving the team with those sales.

Additionally, let’s take Park JiSung and Dong FZ as examples. These are the top perspectives in Asia, and ManUre are looking for opening the business market in Asia. That’s why these players are signed. Have you seen Dong FZ playing any game for them? I bet you may not even know who this person is.

  • 91 Stardust // Jul 24, 2008 at 14:58

Geordie Nick your post is not clearly thought out

You wrote “harrier- everton have over ahcieved lately and thts why they wont strengthin all tht much, we have under achieved and thts why we NEED to strengthen a lot” end quote

If Everton OVER achieved they need to spend - if we UNDER achieved we have the potential to go higher without spending and KK is the man to achieve that.

I dont agree with both of those lines but please think before twisting will you

  • 92 Patrick // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:00

    Pompey and Spurs…

Spurs are just doing another wholesale. I don’t really think it’s good for their team. They will go worse.

Pompey, though, is an interesting team. Sounds like Fulham when they were still in the lower league and rescued by KK (yes, KK). I think it’s not just the spending. Harry Redneck has a big role of keeping the players together.

  • 93 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:01

reilly you talk nonsense - they have bought two strikers - crouch and sahar - one a chelsea reject the other a gangly dude i wouldn’t want in our team.

Tottenham have bought a keeper, Modric, and as i said before, a prima donna winger at the age of 19 who couldn’t break into barca so cannot be world class

Villa bought steve sidwell - another chelsea reject.

Man City wasted 20 mill on Jo

Everton and Blackburn have bought nobody

THAT IS ALL. I CHECKED ALL OF THAT ON SKYSPORTS!

  • 94 Patrick // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:03

@harrier, just wanna mention that it proves the point of Chelski being the grave of players. I remembered someone told us that Sidwell scored an own goal early on… so I am just glad that we never sign him because he’s not yet there and he would have been ruining the squad.

  • 105 Patrick // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:20

    @Sun’lun’s Burnin’
It is exactly because of what you just said: We’ve never seen Jo playing in PL and e is not transferred from the top leagues in Europe, so it’s a bit risky for paying 20M for him.

I do agree with you though…. Crouch is a good forward, but we have better ones. If you are thinking of using Crouch to replace the injury-prone Viduka, think twice because Crouch is somehow weaker… not big enough.

  • 110 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:23

Ahh but here is the crux of it all - Jonas could turn out to be three times the player that Jo is. We don’t know because we haven’t seen either of them. So - pay 20 mill for an unknown quantity or pay 3 because of a technicality in the rules. There is no reason that we HAVE to spend lots of money when we make purchases like Jonas.

  • 111 sweendog // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:25

I agree with the current anti MA .. he hasn’t proved that he is looking to invest .. when he proves that we’ll get behind him, even if we don’t do well this season .. but if he doesn’t invest in players this season theres gonna be a hell of a lot of disgruntled fans … harrier - agreed the players don’t need to cost the earth but they do need to be good and they are needed in key positions, thats why I’m frustrated as well and all the other fans.

  • 112 Patrick // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:27

Fair one patrick, but he could come n do a Torres at the same time so i wouldnt class it as a waste yet.

i was thinkin of crouch to replace dukes but not to do a like-for-like job, Crouch is unique and gives defences a challenge cos hes such an unusual body to deal with, he showed last season when he started for scousers he regularly scored and i think he would complement oba/owen very well. I think he and defoe will run riot for pompey this season.

Glad Jose Antoni0 ‘Luque In Disguise’ Reyes has ‘Snubbed’ us thats for sure!!!lol

  • 116 Patrick // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:31

    @harrier, HPS,
It’s okay. If we aren’t careful that letting KK left the club and buying 4 Jos wasting a lot of money like we did with Luque, we are really in big trouble. I just don’t foresee that is gonna happen, anyways.

  • 117 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:32

    then you say

“agreed the players don’t need to cost the earth but they do need to be good and they are needed in key positions, thats why I’m frustrated as well and all the other fans”

I don’t see how this has anything to do with Ashley at all -

Keegan and Wise meet - Keegan gives Wise a list of the players he wants and a list of players who can leave. Wise, Jimenez and Co go out and broker deals. When the deals are agreed then Wise will call Kev and say “We can get this play for X, yes or no?” and Kev will give an answer. If yes they will go to Llambias - as the ‘managing director’ he is responsible for releasing funds for investment. He says yay or nay. Deal goes through or it doesn’t.

  • 119 AndyT // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:34

I agree that we need to buy players to challenge for Europe, but I dont think we need to spend to avoid a relegation battle. There are some things that are critically different to last season.
    1. The transfers that have happened do not massivley change the squad (I know some of you think thats a bad thing :) ). Last year basically the entire midfield and defence got swapped. Parker, Dyer, Solano, Bramble, Boumsong and Babayaro were playing (sort of) in the first team and got swapped for Barton, Beye, Geremi, Rozenhal, Cacapa, Smith, Enrique. One of the midfielders we retained got pulled from midfield into defence. Few of the players were signed in time for the pre-season and a couple of those that were got injured. We had a confidence crisis and an uninspirational manager. This season the squad has been together (with the usual exceptions of Owen, Viduka and Barton) and with the two additions able to get the pre-season in with the team. We have a manager who has proven inspirational and who has the ability to increase the morale and confidence of the players. Contrary to last seasons evidence I think we do have a good deal of quality in the squad.

  • 120 Patrick // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:35

    @Sun’lun’s Burnin’
In the recent market, there would still be good forwards in the likes of Jo (eh) and Crouch with PL-proved or Top-Europe-League-proved. You may think I am crazy, but I think if we can steal Huntelaar or Darren Bent it will be great.

  • 121 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:35

Taiwantoon - he is a good player maybe - but Luque and Boumsong came to us with reputation. He has never played a day in the premier league. He was playing in the Russian league. For 20 mill you cannot be gaurenteed he will be a success any more than jonas who is a youngish capped international as well.

  • 122 jacob // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:37

At the risk of incuring the wrath of those who feel Ashley can do no wrong - I too feel that he MUST prove his intentions by significantly strengthening the first team - and that means spending! I don’t know what to believe with regards to Modric - we may not have even been in for him seriously in the first place…I remember us being in for a certain Wayne Rooney just to smoke out Man U. The fact remains that we have been outspent by just about everybody during Ashley’s tenure - even Scumderland - and nor do I accept the debt clearing argument…I live in a nice house, but it’s all thanks to debt! If it came down to the choice of having a healthy bank balance and being in the championship - or being up to the eyeballs in debt but competing with ALL the other teams in debt, then I would choose the latter option every time…I await hostilities from the pro-Ashley brigade!

  • 123 Taiwantoon // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:39

AndyT, I think you are very right despite one worrying factor - Owen and the duke are extramely injury prone.

Don’t think we will face a relegation fight but it won’t be an easy season should anything undesirable happens under the current circumstance.

  • 124 Patrick // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:40

    @AndyT,
you have spelled out a special situation of Newcastle United. No matter if it is in purpose, we got people playing in different positions. Starting from using Warren Barton (NOT Joey Barton) as a forward, Beresford as left wing… and now Zoggy and Duff as left back, Nobby as right back, etc. This is really telling us that we need more enhancement in different position. Those players don’t need to be in top quality, but first-team players. I guess this is the worry that some of us have.

  • 125 Taiwantoon // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:45

harrier - true, it’s hard to say if Jo would be a success but he certainly is physically strong enough for the EPL.

I don’t expect nor want the club to sign players like him tho, way too expensive…I think what we need is a few reasonable signings to have the problem areas well covered.

jacob - i won’t give you hostilities - i will not blindly follow ashley - nor do I think he is a saint. I think he enacted a transfer policy that this club has been in desperate need of since Sounness. SBR built the club up through young’uns. I think my biggest problems with this whole situation is that a. the media are trying to turn us against Ashley (and its working apparently) b. alot of you don’t want to look at next year as a building year and want immediate investment to challenge. Look at spurs, everton, blackburn, villa - they have all been building teams up to compete at this level. Short of buying 100 million in players - we cannot do it instantly. Let keegan and ashley build a team the right way for a change.

  • 128 Patrick // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:49

@Taiwantoon, except for the legendary Shearer, the big money buys we’ve made before are proved no different than the regular local lads.

  • 129 Michael (NOR) // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:49

I must say I agree with harrier.

First of all. As much as I’d like to see a fantastic new signing soon, I can’t say I know an awful lot about what’s going on behind the scenes, maybe because I’m from Norway? Or maybe because I haven’t actually heard/ read somewhere, from Mike Ashley and his staff about transfers and all. Some of you seem to know though, and I’d like to know what you’re on about HPS regarding false promises.. “Im sick of all the false promises and all the players we have been linked with snub us because of money!!” If we haven’t heard anything from the man himself, how can we claim that he’s unwilling to invest? Just because papers/ agents/ players (yet noone from our own blub) says so? Have we really been after the 300 players the papers link us with? Is there proof of failure to offer enough money, why we don’t have brought any of these to our club?

I’ve been supporting nufc for 15-16 years now, and I’ve never seen this blub being run in a more professional manner than now. 1 rich owner, no debts, quiet about their business and all..

And I for one, am not really worried about relegating and stuff. We have basicly the same squad (1st team) as we did last year, and we were not beaten for 12-13 games end of last season. Fresh start to the season, Guthrie and Jonas might surprise us abit, and we COULD be looking at a top 8 finish (even without anymore signings).

I think we all have to relax a bit about the transfers, they’ll come, we just have to wait for the official website to confirm. We have to realize that we’re not exactly an attractive club atm, but slowly we’ll be making progress towards that! I want players that want to play for us, not taking a gamble on on huge fees and wages. In a couple of years time, hopefully we’re fighting for 1st-4th spot regularly, and the the players WE want, want to come to Newcastle. Not just for the money…

    Howay!

  • 131 Patrick // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:53

@harrier, I can see way much more rumor of Newcastle (i.e. we are on the verge to sign 200 players but they just couldn’t agree on “personal terms”) which can be destabilizing the club. Somehow this is the way that UK media works as far as I have been observing. That may just be why MA and KK just shut up before; otherwise, we’d be like Man Utd that in the middle of some C Ron Saga and Berbatov nonsense which is not good to the club. Besides, we do see they are working on the right track to get more players in, right?

@Michael, yea, maybe we also want to utilize the young reserved squad for a bit because they want to play and they are not bad lads.

  • 132 sweendog // Jul 24, 2008 at 15:56

Until we sign minimum a credible midfield playmaker and a center back, I’ll be frustrated with MA .. at the end of the day we were in for Modric (I personally think he was over priced and glad we didn’t get him) but most of these deals came down to money and us not paying it .. I just hope we’re able to get Collucini or similar and Fernandez/ whoever keegan sees as a playmaker .. but without them midtable mediocrity is what we’ve got and if we get injures (Owen/Viduka) .. then things will look very bad..

On the wimmin front .. what about Jessic Alba and a case of harp lager.

“how can you attract top players to the toon we carnt offer european footie,so you offer more wages, but with ashley cutting the wage bill ”

right we have found it! we are cutting the wage bill! your sentence says - “i am upset because we are not continuing to pay over the odds for players”

what is good for the club is not to succumb to paying too much for players - take the team we have full of full or u-21 internationals that have a combined 30 odd years of uefa cup and champions league experience - chuck in a bunch of hungry cheap youngsters - and use a motivator like keegan to get them to push us into europe.

I’ve said it before, people like to believe what they read in the tabloids as long as it suits their own personal beliefs. One minute they are slagging off papers like the Sun and the Mirror for printing rubbish and then they are quoting what has been printed in them to show how Ashley is “ruining our club”.
Like others have said, why do we need to waste millions when we can get a squad for far less? Let’s face it the only teams that can attract genuine top class talent are the top four from last year. Everyone else gets their cast offs and that’s only if the players still want to play in England and don’t go elsewhere. There are only a finite number of players to bid for and we are not an attractive proposition. Something a lot of people on here are struggling to comprehend. We are blinded by a love of NUFC and would pay to play in the number 9 shirt. Unfortunately the latest boy wonder from brazil/france/germany (delete as required) does not have the same love and wants what is best for their career. Football is only a job to them and they want to play for the best clubs at the highest level. NUFC are neither of these in these peoples eyes.

    mmmmm. sunday roast

    where bouts in toon?

  • 155 Micky Toon // Jul 24, 2008 at 16:21

Also, if Jo is so good, then why didn’t the top four put in a £20m bid for him? Are their owners tight too? Chel$ki certainly have the money available.

  • 156 Patrick // Jul 24, 2008 at 16:22

@harrier, the wisdom of this week! I can’t agree more. I don’t like ppl coming for European football as take-it-for-granted.

“Do you want to play in the Champions League?”
    vs
“Do you want to bring us to the Champions League?”

Some of the money eaters would choose the 1st answer, but I can tell you that there are more people choosing the 2nd answer. Let’s say (and in my imagination for a while) we want to buy Huntelaar and we are challenging him bringing the team to the Champions League with his scoring ability. If he is ambitious, would he choose us?

Aye broon ale - Gosforth. Fish and chips !

  • 158 reilly // Jul 24, 2008 at 16:26

harrier do you think footie fans give a toss about the club paying over the top wages for a good player no all we care about is that we signed a quality player, paying 15 mill for shearer we didnt care about the money.

  • 165 MAG PIE // Jul 24, 2008 at 16:35

I know a lad who works at Rangers. I emailed him for the word on Glasgow’s mean street regarding Cuellar and McGeady. He says neither want to sell but Celtic can afford to say no whilst Rangers are proper skint and would accept a decent bid.

  • 168 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 16:39

“do you think footie fans give a toss about the club paying over the top wages for a good player no all we care about is that we signed a quality player”

Leeds fans only cared that they signed quality players that would qualify them for champs league. They failed in the qualifcation rounds, and got relegated the following year. Couldn’t afford the players they were paying over the top for and sold them off until they were in league one.

  • 169 scott9 // Jul 24, 2008 at 16:40

reyes why did we bid for him we need a cenral midfiled player not a winger

  • 170 AndyT // Jul 24, 2008 at 16:41

    @Harrier - good call
Gretna is alsoa good example of not being able to stand up financially. What do you do if your rich benefactor snuffs it and the club can’t afford to keep running? If Abramovitch farts in the wrong direction for Putin and suddenly discovers polonium in his sushi, then you will see a firesale at Chelsea that will make Leeds look like they were expert negotiators.

  • 171 harrier // Jul 24, 2008 at 16:41

We are heading for an economic recession, the amount of money folk will have to spend will decrease and the club’s revenue will reflect that. Other clubs too, some of them are in the red already. They will have to sell players to survive, we will be in a healthy financial position.

I think the squad is big enough and MA has spent enough. Some of you expect the earth from a billionaire. After all he spent about £9M on players last summer and has already spent £2/3M this summer. If we get relegated then we should call for Ashley’s head but I think we’ll finish a respctable 13th this season. Let the other clubs waste their money on £15M players so that they can finish 5th or 6th. What is the point of that? MA has bailed the club out and has no intention of selling. That story about £420M to the American company was made up by the press because they have nothing to write about. Kevin has the material to work with. He’ll get the team even fitter next season and we could finish even higher. Thank God for MA. Over to y
