Keegan Challenges His Players To Be Like Duff

In our first game of the pre-season last Saturday, Damien Duff probably had his best game in a black and white shirt.

Damien Duff – best game ever for Newcastle last week and 3 goals

And we all know Damien is a good player, who for on reason or another hasn’t shown his sparkling play too often at Newcastle over the last two seasons.

However, with his well taken hat-trick last Saturday the fans were excited as to what Damien can produce for the team under Kevin Keegan this coming season.

Kevin used Damien as an example of what he wants the rest of his players to do.

Kevin talked today to nufcTV and said:

“It’s a chance for the lads to say to me ‘I want to be in that team come the start of the season.,”  “It’s a new opportunity for everybody.”

“There are two or three at this club who feel they have not had a pre-season for two or three years because of circumstances beyond their control.”

“Damien Duff is a prime example of that and he was fantastic at Hartlepool last week.

“For the players it’s an exciting time and for a manager you just stand back and say ‘show me what you can do.”

“And so far the training has been outstanding.”

“We have got a new fitness coach in and I think so far it’s been very hard but the lads have really enjoyed it.”

We continue to be amazed at how Kevin Keegan seems to be able to get the very best out of his players and Damien Duff is no exception, and while our squad is pitifully small, it now seems nicely packed with class.

4-5 good senior players are needed in the last 37 days of the summer transfer market, with perhaps a few youngsters also coming in, and then we’ll be in very good shape as squad.

Comments welcome.

Looking good fitness wise, lets get these players in ASAP so they have a chance to get their fitness up before the start of the season.

Duff’s gonna be one of our most important players in the upcoming season.
I’m only wondering about N’Zogbia…..where he’s gonna play cos i honestly can’t imagine him as a CM with Guthrie,Barton,Butt and possibly Milner in that position.

Hadji – I still think NZogbia will leave. Maybe that’s why we are being linked with a move for Reyes. I agree that Duff is likely to play a bigger role this season. Let’s hope Smith steps up too.

Sorry Ed but Duff has been woeful and i can not remember him ever having a good game for us since his arrival from Chelsea.

It remains to be seen if he will ever capture his form of years ago..and 3 goals against a pretty average Hartlepool has not convinced me that he should not be sold.

I hope he does recapture the form he once had and it would be great for us a Team..but history has a nasty habit of repeating itself and my gut feeling is he will be back to the same duff we know and love after a few sterner tests against decent opposition.

It would have been his best game in a black and white shirt… had we not been wearing the purple kit!
Agree with sirjasontoon, Duff has been awful for us and is possibly the weakest ‘athlete’ ive ever seen. It was nice to se he got a hat-trick and is putting the graft in but i’ll be reserving my judgement til we play someone decent

so what if he has done bad in the past he is showing us he can do the business so get of his back sirjason

its strange that two signings have changed our midfield so much

duff nzogbia butt guthrie barton guitarezz milner
    geremi

so able playing left wing we can have duff and nzogbia guitarezz

CM butt guthrie barton geremi nzogbia guitarezz

    RM guthrie milner guitarrezz geremi

then when you add lua lua we have a

add a strong centermidfielder then we will have a competitive midfield, strangly

I tend to agree with sirjasontoon…A good game against Hartlepool means little…

Let’s hope he keeps playing well in the next few friendlies. I prefer Zog anyway.

    sirjasontoon your spot on

last month i was talking about our wingers and i looked up some stats on Milner, N’Zogbia and Duff

I found in the last 3 seasons:

Milner had 30 assists and 12 goals

    (Including villa loan)

Zog had 15 assists and 8 goals

(Including Roeder fall out so he may have got more)

Duff has 5 assists (4 for Chelsea) and 5 goals (3 for Chelsea) his 1 assist for us was against Villa when he set up Sibierski And his goals were against West ham who were bottom at the time and Stoke in the FA Cup.

He needs a lot more than a hat trick at Hartlepool, but if anyone can get him back to the Duff from Blackburn then its KK.

i would rather have Duff showing good against Hartpool in pre-season than not at all! how about we give him his chance, just this season and see how things turn out! he has had a few injuries since his arrival at the Toon, we all know what that can do to a player. Same goes for Smith, i know he was SHOCKING last season, but this is a new season, with KK to boot. give them their chance!

Leo I think most are in agreement Duff needs to do a hell of alot more than a 3 goals at Hartlepool.

Still think he should be sold..he reminds me of 70’s wallpaper way past it’s sell by date.

The seasons before Duff never got the time to recover completely from his injuries. Now he is fully fit and he will be immense for us, especially when the squad is soo thin.

I predict the following: He will be one of the few leaders on the pitch and he will have a tremendous season. Mark my words.

Has anyone shown ******* consistency except Given and Martins in the last two years?

Yeah, actually ‘we’ have for blaming any ******* easy target who’s had a rough time with injuries who happens to be one of our most talented players. Easy isn’t it, great player history, put on your rose tints and…..there you go!! He’s shit in’ he. FFS…
