As we half expected Kevin Keegan has said he will make a decision soon on French trialist Sebastien Bassong.

Kevin seemed impressed with the Metz defender during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Doncaster Rovers.
The Frenchman, who just turned 22 earlier this month, played the full 90 minutes at the heart of the Newcastle defense after spending the last week with the Newcastle squad.
His trial only started this week, and not the week before as we had first thought.
Kevin told reporters after the game at Doncaster today:
“I thought he did very well and we’ll see where we go from here.
“He’s not a kid, he’s played 70-odd times in the French First Division and has played for France under-21s.”
“He’s one we’ve had with us a week and we’ve seen him train and wanted to see him in a match and today was a good test for him.”
“For someone very new he did very well.”
As long as he looked as good in training as he did today, we’d fully expect Kevin to try to sign him, if we can agree terms with the player, and a transfer fee with his his club Metz.
Everton have also been interested in the player, but if Newcastle really want him, let’s make this a smooth transfer, and pay the lad what he’s worth, and get him.
He fits the profile we are looking for this summer, and he can also play at left back.

Sign him up, he fits the bill in terms of our supposed transfer policy, and I’m sure he wouldn’t cost too much anyway, so it’s not as if it’d be a huge failure if he wasn’t a great signing.

went to keep moat to watch rovers vs newcastle today guys. was a pretty even game. but ive gotta say, the two players that stood out the most for newcastle were Bassong and Guthrie. Bassong is a big physical lad who was like a brick wall, albeilt against an average doncaster attack. Guthrie’s got a great footballing brain, always plays with his head up and looks for a positive pass. so if we can snap up Bassong i think Kev will have made 2 very good, shrewd signings. Now all we need is Insua, Collocini, Van Der Vaart, and Derdiok!
Zogbia played well today as well, so lets hope we keep him too!

Can I just say is KK mad, he says we are after cover at RB, and LB as we dont have any. Well I agree at LB we dont need cover we need a new first choice - e.g. Sorin free, Placente - free both Argies too lol. As for RB why waste our clearly limited funds on another RB. Sign a LB, Bassong, and Collocini who can play there , but my point is we have a top RB already in Beye, and then Geremi who was quality there at Chelsea keeping out proper int RB, plus like Nobby Solano at RB he has more ball time. I dont like Geremi CM he is good on the right but i prefer Milner etc there. We need e.g. Shorey, Bassong (great back up at LB/CB), and Collocini. Then we can get in a Stephen Appiah type box to box midfielder - Manuel Fernandes and Zigic upfront he would give that extra dimension and he is alot better than some believe he never had a chance at Valencia. How do like them apples

i just bought the new away jersey from the offical site and when it arrived there was a ticket for the valencia game included. i’m from ireland and i’ll not be able to get across to the match. i know the tickets aint hard come by for a friendly but if anyone wants it i’ll post over to you f.o.c
it’d be a shame to see it go to waste..

Sounds like a decent player and he is young so will improve . If we wrap this deal up quickly then get the 2 Argentine internationals we are reported to be interested in .We will at least have decent numbers at the back although if they are up to premiership football remains to be seen.

I’ll have it flan!! Anyway sign up Bassong, CB cover, play him at left back if needs be. Edgar can be deployed at RB/LB if needed. We need something creative in midfield, and a link up striker.

hahahaha Punk Skunk i take him to the friendlies quite often because they are obviously cheaper then the league tickets, which costs £17.00 and £32.00 for me and that is the cheap seats lol. I used to have a season ticket BUT wor lass put a stop to that she says there to expensive but little does she know i am saving for another hehehehehehe.

Ross G- KK is not mad we do need a back up right back. We have done this for years Babayaro and Carr as full backs no cover(they were crap).Babayaro is knacked - Oh Ramage can play there-no he could’nt. Duff plays lb Nzog plays lb. Taylor, Edgar& Geremi rb. I would put my 5yo against Geremi at rb he is much quicker.
We need Taylor to stay at cb, edgar cb etc. We must have players that specialise in a given position. As all you end up with again is a small squad. We only have 4 cb’s and none of them great. Take one of those out to play full back if someone is injured and we are struggling big time.
Otherwise you are talking good crack with the rest.

Collocini? I think we need a 24-28 year old CB like, for the experience, reliability and the ability to read the game is essential. Woodgate would have been the perfect buy.

Coloccini is a CB.
Senderos is a really good defender but prone to a howler, however he hs brilliant potential and is better than what we have, inclduing Faye IMO + he has only just turned 23.
