Keegan Seems Confident Of Owen Deal

News today that will interest Newcastle fans on the status of Michael Owen’s contract.

Michael Owen – how many millions did they say they were giving me?

Newcastle Manager Keegan expects England striker Michael Owen to sign a new contract with the club shortly.

Kevin talked to BBC Radio this morning and said:

“Hopefully, that will be sorted out within the next two or three weeks,”

We believe that Newcastle have given Kevin some assurances they will be able to reach an agreement with the Newcastle captain on his new contract.

And the news yesterday that a source close to Owen said he would leave the club on a free transfer next summer, if he couldn’t reach a deal with the club was probably not true.

Indeed getting some of our players back and ready for the new season, is almost as important as bringing new players in.

If we can get Michael Owen, Joey Barton and Oba Martins fit and ready to go for the Manchester United game, then we’ll be in pretty good shape.

Kevin has repeatedly said he wants to keep all the good players he already has at the club, and build the team around Michael for the future, and he for one will be relieved when Michael finally signs his new contract at the club.

So will we.

Comments very welcome.

I believe we must get owens signiture! He is imo a dam good captain, he’s got a good football (strikers ) brain! he started to show what he can do for newcastle! if we can keep him fit he will be a huge asset! plus he will help just by his name attract players! we must get him to sign!!

The use of the word ‘hopefully’ very rarely denotes real hope … but maybe it is getting sorted eventually.

Get him sold to LA Galaxy or something!! Can make a good 5/6mil on him and the 100k+ wages will help give a few other “targets” a better pay deal. Buy another holding striker type player we’ll have Martins/Jonas/Milner to fill the small guy role and Viduka/new lad to fill the big boy role!

Cant stand little pricks like him who always gets his own way. Scores 10 goals in a season and thinks he’s something special, he’ll be out injured (once he recovers from mumps) before you can say “nurse I need a sick note im a poowly ickle boy”

Greedy greedy little man who has shown his true colours.
I wish KK would develop a hard edge and get rid of him, Barton, Duff , Smith etc.
Get in Inler, Derdiyok and Insua.

Ed, just tried to access one of your articles and Norton Anti-Virus has totally blocked it because it apparantly contains a serious and current phishing scam. Nice to know that you have sold out to advertising ploys after all this time…NOT!!

This ig goodbye from me and I wont be visiting again, because if you support advertisers who deliberately phish through your site then its not a site that I wish to visit.

Shame, coz your articles kept me busy during quiet times in work….

Of course its true, if he doesn’t agree a deal then he will be out of contract and therefore leave on a free. That isn’t speculation, it is simply a fact.

Stelley – Ed probably didn’t know – why don’t you contact him via the contact form and sort it out via that means? Shouldn’t be too hard to rectify the problem, if indeed there is one.

I for one have never had any problems!!!

the owen news is great but i do fear for us next season .we have an ok team but a well below average squad in both quality and quantity.I have faith in KK but if we dont get in 5 or 6 QUALITY players we are heading for another season of mediocritY.Yesterdays game was only a friendlly but did ya see the team and most worryingly the bench we had to put out, but i will keep faith with KK.

I don’t care whether Owen has to be offered in excess of his present 120k per week, the lad is essential to our club. He is one of our biggest names, a huge selling point for the club, an excellent captian, a guarunteed scorer or goals and most importantly has an intelligent football brain.
Futher, it is vital that there is continuity amongst our best performing players so that we can continue to build around them. If Owen leaves, it will be a huge step back for the club. We need him, mercenary or not!!!

Keep the faith buddy. We didn’t have anything near a full squad yesterday. Also, I am happy that in spite of us having a thin squad, we have quality in every position and an abundance of promising youngsters to come in should a crisis occur.

I think it will be good that we can keep Owen as long as he stays fit. What i am more concerned about is Keegan saying that all we need is a LB and RB. He also suggested that we have enough in midfield and upfront. I think we still need another striker and some more creativity in midfield.
Also it would better to buy attacking full backs rather than a CB that can play LB or RB. In my opinion we should go for the Croatian LB or the Marseille LB, not to sure for RB though.

i know we didnt have a full squad yes`day but that is my point, if that happens in the prem and we have to put that team out are you confident of getting results. I do have faith in KKthough and he seems to have a few irons in the fire lets hope he gets his targets sooner rather than later.

Justin Hoyte? Truely shocking player, not even 4th choice RB at Arsenal i think he is 5th choice.

Finnan is good but way to old.

We dont need a RB, we have Geremi for back-up and IMO Geremi’s best position is RB, always looks good for Cameroon there.

Dick – We may have been awaiting on the player or Keegan might not even fancy him – I wish people would get of the clubs back for transfers dealings, No offence intended….None of us know what’s going on behind closed doors – I agree, it’s exceptionally frustrating, but we’ve got to give them a chance – we can all judge, but lets give it to the end of the window…

I personally feel pirlo is too old and slow for the prem now, he has left it too late and should just stay in italy. i also feel the quality consistency of his set peices has dropped radically.

Went to see Dark Knight yesterday, anyone seen it? Its fantastic! Especially The Joker, shame he has passed away really

Do you guys care for Ashleys extra 30k a week or you care for someone who can score 15 goals for us next season.
The fat pig is just so so greedy.
Look guys i understand we are not in Europe next season so no top profiles will be signed unless some crazy transfer fee is payed for them.
What bothers me the most is that the pig has no AMBITIONS for our club non whatsoever.
And a club with 52000 capacity should never worry that will be relegation candidate,MA is doing this to us……he makes us feel like the lowest of the lowest.
Didnt he learn the lesson last season,ONLY A FOOL CAN MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE TWICE.

Just get Mikey signed, and give it up with the pay cut. He wont take a paycut for a club thats shown no ambition in this transfer market. No players will come here either with the rumors of wage ceilings.
Back your manager Ashley. He made it clear Owen is critical for any success we may have this coming season.

I would have been happy for Owen to leave if we had got someone like Arshavin or Ardan. But we didn’t, so it’s vital we keep him.

I’d like to see us buy 6 new players:

Collocioni, Warnock & Inler or baptista
Then a young RB, DM and CF

Matt…Why is everyone mentioning the 100mill,we’re not even sure that he cleared it completely.
And even if he did, he recovered at least 40% of it with the gate money and TV rights money.
Do you even realize that this is the third transfer window allready and considering all the players who are inn and the players who are out…..when you put all together,he didnt even spend 15 mill from his own pocket.
If my memory serves me right
    Parker-7mill
    Dyer-6mill
    Emre-4mill
    Luque-1mill
    We bought
    Smith-6mill
    Enrique-6mill
    Guthrie-2.5mill
    Jonas-3mill
    Barton-5.5mill
    Beye-2mill
    Faye-2mill

We got 18 mill from selling our players, and bought players for 27mill.
That leaves MA having spent only 9mill,and he’s in the middle of his 3rd transfer window.
