Surprising news today in the Mail On Sunday that Newcastle have made a bid for Arsenal’s Swiss International Philippe Senderos.
Philippe Senderos – Newcastle have made decent bid for him?
We have to say immediately that we have no idea whether this story is true, and it is Sunday today and stories are sometimes made up, as we have found out many times, and which Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan has only recently talked about.
The Arsenal manager was said to be stunned when the offer of about £4M arrived last Wednesday. That seemed a reasonable offer for the 23 year old, and it has not been rejected as yet by the London club.
The Mail is saying the Arsenal board may hold out for about £6M, but it’s their willingness to consider allowing another first-teamer to potentially leave this summer, that will upset both Wenger and the Arsenal fans.
There have so far been four departures of some of their top players, Alexander Hleb, Mathieu Flamini, Gilberto Silva and Jens Lehmann, this summer.
Philippe is on the fringe of the first team but has still played over 60 times for Arsenal and over 30 times for Switzerland.
But the thing that will worry Newcastle fans is that Senderos is apt to make costly mistakes, and Wenger seems to agree that the Swiss International struggles at times.
There will be memories of Titus Bramble that will no doubt come to Newcastle fans’ minds with Senderos, and he may not be the most popular of choices at center-back.
The Mail is reporting that Wenger wants to keep the player, but that his directors believe selling at the right price would represent good business for the London club.
They are also reporting that Arsenal are in turmoil, and the usual nonsense we get from the gossip press, but we’ll not venture into that, which we think is just rubbish.
Senderos, though, could also be a good addition to Kevin Keegan’s squad, as he is still young at 23 years old, and has lots of experience for both Arsenal and Switzerland, and we have to believe Kevin must like what he sees in the player.
Keegan has been an excellent judge of players in the past, and if this report is true, we have to believe Kevin thinks he can rid him of the mistakes he seems to keep making.
After Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat at Doncaster yesterday afternoon, when 10 first teamers were missing for on reason or another Kevin said:
“I’m expecting one or two new faces to come in,”
“We only have one right-back and one leftback.”
“We do need one or two additions and things will start to happen in the next week to 10 days.”
This will also please the Newcastle fans that there is indeed significant work going on behind the scenes to bring in around 5 top players before the end of August.
We’ll run a vote on whether our readers think Senderos would be a good buy at around £4M. We also have a poll running on whether Michael Owen should take a pay cut and remain at Newcastle.
Comments very welcome.

Comment #9he is far better than bramble! he is just short of top class – drogba made him look like a mug, bu then he makes most defenders look stupid! He is a good player and at the moment we are not a good team so he would be a good addition. strong player and still young enough to improve, defenders aren’t at there best until they hit late 20’s.

Comment #13i think he would be a good signing if the story is true. lets face it hes a better player than cacapa and at 4m its not going to break the bank.a change of subject but it looks like the scum are set to sign diof ,a marrage made in heaven,i didnt think i could hate the scum much more than i already do but this would make me SCREAM WITH HATE

Comment #14his partners at Arsenal make him look better than he is – something he won’t have at newcastle.
i do think KKK will be bringing in 2 centre backs , 1 of which can also play RB, a LB another CDM and a forward.
Berbatov linked today – with Ashley’s Spurs connection I personally think this could be our KABOOOOOOM signing this summer – the new Shearer for me.

Comment #17I think for anything around 4mio pounds he’d be a good buy. We need some more defensive recruits and he would fit the bill. I also think that if he’d be playing regular football, he’d settle in to the team rather well and surely wouldn’t make to many mistakes as we know he occasionaly does … I agree with Geordie Gerrard 7 that he’s defnitely a no-nonsense defender, which is what a premierleague defender needs to be
Now get in collocini, bassong, larsson, ledley and another striker and my worries for next season might be a bit relieved
PS. glad to see chimbonda and diouf are heading to mackemland and not to us

Comment #18Cacapa and Faye are useless.
Of the rumoured CBs, I would go for:
1. Collocini (sp?)
2. Evans
3. Senderos
In today’s market, £4M for a starting CB is decent business.
I think Taylor will get better, now we need a partner for him to solidify the back.

Comment #28i dont like Senderos too much. we need a cerebral CB who can organise our back four. with Given maybe leaving, we need that leader even more. Senderos just doesnt do it for me.

Comment #29IMO i don’t think he’s as bad as some people are making him out to be…Couple years ago when he was starting regularly for Arsenal he looked immense for them..Only in the past year or so he started making some mistakes and costly one’s at that. But maybe that’s because he was a regular and then all off a sudden he was a bit part player..that surely would knock your confidence…
No better man than KK to give you confidence in your ability..think for 4 mill would be an excellent signing…

Comment #30The one Arsenal player we wouldn’t want! You couldn’t make it up! If we want Swiss players we should have snapped up Inler, Derdiyok and Djourou.
Wise et al get a lot of criticism for their pursuit of cheap S.Americans – I don’t know why!! Surely that approach and the youngsters like Spear etc is the way to go.
We can’t keep thowing stupid money and wages at the Luques, Duffs, Smiths, Vidukas and Bartons of this world.
I don’t know if the 2009 version of KK is what is needed righ now. KK is rigidly loyal to the following:
Given – Krul should be the main man now
Barton – total liability
Owen – attitude to money stinks
Smith – will never come good. Was barely good enough before the leg break .
Duff – a hat trick against Hartlepool doesn’t gloss over the fact he’s finished.
Geremi – legs have gone!

Comment #34Senderos is awful i have seen many of his Gaffs on the TV and he has the concentration span of my goldfish..he really does suck !
I hope we don’t start panic buying and and filling the team sheet with donkeys at inflated fees…we where linked with so much quality, turan, modric, van de vart..now its players like chimpongo and senderarse…c’mon Ashley dig deep..we don’t want players like this at the Toon we will be a complete shambles..even sunderland are more ambitious right now and we are starting to look like mugs.

Comment #39Nick good comments…I agree Duff against good strong opposition will be back to his usual self he was finished when chelsea sold him…bit like babayaro too.
Smith i feel really sorry for the lad I really though he would be a tuff cookie up front when he got his fitness back but you only have to look at his ratios and it is plain to see that he should be offloaded ASAP.
Far too many players have underachieved last season and although Keegan can get the players to raise their game once we pick up knocks and suspensions (butt/smith) I dread to think where we could end up.
Like I have said 3/4 decent signings of proven quality 5/6 even better..we really do need to pull our fingers out and get more quality and depth in the side it is plain to see.

Comment #40Sunday dinner is my favourite meal of the week but not today if these rumours about Senderos and that piece of rubbish from Bolton are true.
Regarding that Bolton rumour have we not got enough troubles with Barton. To think I used to complain about Bellamy who in hindsight was a choirboy in comparison.
