22 year-old Metz defender Sebastien Bassong seems confident of winning a contract at Newcastle United.
Sebastien Bassong – seems confident of joining Newcastle United
Seb talked to Setanta Sports today:
“Yes, I’m optimistic,” . “I spoke with Kevin Keegan, who told me he’s happy with me. That’s a great feeling.”
“I don’t know if I’ll be transferred, my agent is aware of it, nevertheless this spell has been fulfilling.”
“I discovered a new culture, a different football, and such experiences always help you grow. I don’t know what’s next, we’ll have to wait and see.”
“The French-speaking and all the squad’s players helped me settle and feel comfortable.”
“It was all about English football, but I didn’t see any dodgy challenges to test me; I like this style of football, it suits me.”
“I spoke with the coach [Yvon Pouliquen] on the phone; he asked me how the trial was, nothing more.”
“I believe if Newcastle want me and if they reach an agreement with Metz, I will be allowed to move there.”
Good words from Seb, and it looks like the lad is ready for the challenge at Newcastle, and that’s good to hear.
We’d be surprised if Kevin doesn’t take up the option of signing the youngster, hopefully within the next couple of days, and then he could play in the upcoming tournament in Mallorca.
Comments welcome.

Comment #3Hope he does sign because he looks a good prospect. A bargain at 1.5m especially as, according to Sky Sports online, Colocini says he
is staying at Deportivo and had no intention of coming to NUFC. Looks like we are back to the Gorshkov Principle. Gorshkov was a Russian admiral who said that when the balloon goes up you go with what you have got because there’s no time to call for reinforcements. I think that the Baptista gossip is another wind-up too. Where is Wise’s office? Is it a barrow in the Kings Road, Chelsea?

all the reports from the match apart from u said he was very solid looking at the back.
It’s not newcastles fault that mallorca are being alkward with the gutirrez signing
and in the two matches guthre played in he has a goal an assist and his passing is probably around 90% i’d say.
a bit of optamism wud do u no harm man!! Support ur club, i can’t see how u can say u support a club with talk like that

Comment #23For £1.5m we should go for him. He looks a good kid and I think he can grow in English football. It is not because he is French that he is the next Boumsong, ffs what stupid thoughts are that.
Every Portugese player is not like Viana who will not succeed in EPL (Ronaldo, Nani, …) and so on. So stop making comments who comparing players because of their name, origine or club from which they come.

Comment #25bassong seems like a top prospect and also looks like he will be able to get a place in the squad relatively quickly. although that depends on signings
he seems to be able to speak english well so thats a bonus too

Comment #26Why wouldn’t you feel confident if you turned up and played alongside Cacapa? He’ll hardly have looked and thought there was competition for places. Reports are good and lord knows we could do with the numbers.

Comment #27Definatley should buy him as he is not a big risk for 1.5 mil. Low transfer fee, probably low wages, no inflated ego and best years ahead of him.
Wikipedia says Hes a Metz man so whoever said the deal was done is wrong.

Premier League – Transfer Talk: Full-back option
Much of today’s transfer tittle-tattle revolves around the oft-disregarded full-back position, with Newcastle leading the race for Deportivo defender Fabricio Coloccini as Dennis Wise’s “crack” transfer unit finally creaks into action.
Both hand-tied boss Kevin Keegan and the Newcastle faithful have been left frustrated by the lack of activity in the transfer market from the team headed by Wise and featuring Toon owner Mike Ashley’s pal Tony Jimenez.
Newcastle are short on numbers and quality in their injury (and prison)-prone squad. They are particularly light in the full-back positions, but so far they have only signed Liverpool youngster Danny Guthrie and Mallorca winger Jonas Gutierrez – and even that move is subject to approval as the Argentinian tries to buy out his contract with the Spanish side.
Madrid rag AS reported the agent of Keegan-haired stopper Coloccini – who plays either at right- or centre-back – as saying that “the only offer I have is from Newcastle, and Deportivo have been made aware of it”.
Toon are looking to spend £8 million on the former Milan player although Depor want around £11m.

Comment #39Christ – even Fulham are flinging £12m at Andy Johnson.
If even they’re spending that kind of money (in addition to the other £10m or so) where the hell are we going to be come May?
Three £5m players and a solid £8m player would be great. £23m, that’s all that Roy Keane wanted to give Spurs for a bunch of flabby arsed slack.

Lets hope it can get resolved, because clearly player and agent aren’t happy, and I can’t see him staying there now, so hopefully a move will still take place.. But who knows, nothings ever straight forward for us Mags is it?
