The Newcastle United Football Club have now issued a statement concerning Joey Barton.

The statement read as follows on the Newcastle United web site:
Newcastle United officials can confirm they have met with Joey Barton today (July 29th) following which it has been agreed by everyone involved that Joey will remain with the Club.
The Club will not be making any further comment on the matter.
This is not too surprising, since we feel that if the club was going to sack Joey, they would have done it by now. However, whether this is the right thing to do is another matter, and this will not come as good news to lots of Newcastle fans.
Please let us know what you feel about his in our latest poll - should Newcastle be keeping Joey Barton?
Comments welcome.

I think financially, and taking our squad size into account, this is the right option. Its up to Joey now though, he has to get his finger out and repay Kev for this faith, this last chance!
4 Chicken // Jul 29, 2008 at 15:39
I’ve already said it on another thread, but I’m never going back to St. James’ as long as JB is a Newcastle player. I refuse to have any part (no matter how insignificant) in paying good money to bad news.
There have been some pretty sh!tty times at the Toon in recent years but this is the darkest day of all IMO.
5 Lew Davies // Jul 29, 2008 at 15:40
I have mixed feelings about this, but I do think JB should come out with a public statement/ apology. But he is probably too arrogant to do this!
Not sure how long he will remain out of trouble for. Hopefully forever, but the jury’s out………………. for now……

Fuse+match+Barton=BOOM!!
7 ToonEskimo // Jul 29, 2008 at 15:43
Lew if you remember last year at this time, Barton was putting out statements left right and centre and here we were saying “what a canny lad Joey is” and “toon legend” he’s made us look a right bunch of mugs…..
8 Lew Davies // Jul 29, 2008 at 15:46
Chicken - Get over it man lifes too short. I understand how you feel, but your staying away wont change anything. You are just spiting yourself. Maybe booing him on the pitch will be more productive……You wont be the only one. I am sorely tempted myself. Especially if he doesnt come out with a public apology. I think he owes us that at least.

Cmon Joey!!
Hope to see some flying tackles on Wayne Rooney, god that guy needs a beat down. If half of Rooney’s lunges would have connected with players id hate to think how many careers he would have injured. The stupid petulant chav.
12 davey // Jul 29, 2008 at 15:51
mike tyson for centre half and charlie manson on the wing.

ToonEskimo - Yes I do feel a bit like a mug at the moment. Originally I felt just like Chicken above, but now we know he is staying, I just dont know. One thing is for sure he better be fantastic this season. (though I’m not even that optomistic anymore)
15 Tom_Toon // Jul 29, 2008 at 15:51
C’mon Joey!!
I hope to see some flying tackles on the petulant little chav that is Wayne Rooney.
The guy needs a good beat down. If some of Rooney’s lunges had connected with the intended player i’d hate to know how many careers he would have ended.
16 RamyNUFC // Jul 29, 2008 at 15:53
We need all the players we can get at the minute. This is Bartons last chance to play at this level, if he screws up he’ll never play at a top club again. Verdicts out for me but i hope we look back and say KK done the right thing.

Chicken how can you call this worse than being pounded by Man U last season?
Don’t be a prat.
19 Stami // Jul 29, 2008 at 15:57
i think he should be given his LAST chance by the club. i too think that some form of community service should be served by Barton for his actions, jail time was one thing, but now he needs to repay the club for what he put us through! Maybe coaching some youngsters for a season or doing charity work in a hospital with kids with cancer would do him the world of good as a person! I for one am willing to give him his last chance, and will NOT be booing him in a TOON shirt…!

I Agree with geordie nick.
Chicken, I think you’re overreacting.
While this is Bad, is it worse than Bowyer and Dyer trying to knock 6 shades of pink off one another off the ball, in the middle of a game, at home, against Aston villa!
How about FFS Sacking Bobby Robson only to move forward with the “legendary” Grame Souness.
These to name a few and this may be the Kick up the once exposed backside he needs to stay off the sauce and seek some anger management therapy.
Come on Barton, As long as you wear that shirt, you have my support!!!
Come on the TOON!!!!

Far too many people on high horses. I want what is best for Newcastle United Football Club and right now that is keeping Joey Barton. I’m not saying that what he did was OK but all i’m saying is the Toon doing well is more important to me than getting pissy over what is morally right and wrong. Christ he didn’t kill anyone, he had a couple of scraps, it happens everyday, its unfortunate but get over it. At the end of the day he has the potential to be a great player for our club and thats all that matters to me, selfish, maybe, but thats how I feel.
24 HeronMag // Jul 29, 2008 at 16:12
Jailbird Joey has a second chance. If he takes it, changes his attitude and plays well he could be a vital player for us. If not, we should let him go.

26 Phil // Jul 29, 2008 at 16:19
In what way is having a thug like joey barton in our team “what’s best for newcastle”?
I don’t want him on moral grounds.
But more importantly I don’t want him because it’s only a matter of time before he does something else stupid and disgraces this club again.
27 Allman20 // Jul 29, 2008 at 16:26
Good to have him back if you ask me!
28 staffsmag // Jul 29, 2008 at 16:28
Can I just say - what he has done is wrong. He has been punished and it will be him that has to face the chants from oppo fans next season. Keegan is giving him the chance to be the bigger man and we as supporters have to let him do that. We need to get behind him and if he is playing shite get onto him about that but not what he has done in the past - we want what is best for the team and hopefully he will repay KK’s faith in him and in turn bring something to the team. Keegan knows how to deal with people like Barton lets give him the chance !!!!!

the question is can he stay out of trouble
30 Midjew // Jul 29, 2008 at 16:37
Who cares if he stays AS LONG as he proves his worth.
if we sell him or sack him we loose ALL value.
if we keep him, we can at least have a squad player and never know maybe a great player proving himself
we ALL make mistakes, so lets move on and see what he is made of!

32 Will // Jul 29, 2008 at 16:51
I’m happy.
The fact is that most young people will become thugs because of poor up-bringings and the rest of it, not JUST because of crazy celebrities.
I think if we give him a chance and he proves himself, like he did towards the end of last season, then he also has the chance to become a good role model. Proving you can redeem yourself, but this is yet to be seen possible.
33 Faustino // Jul 29, 2008 at 16:54
Oh for god sake Chicken…where was your morals when multi- GBH charged Duncan ferguson was at the club, or Bowyer accused of beating someone senseless and finally my name sake who has been up on more guns and drugs charges than Gandolfini. In fact surely, when Cantona kicked someone square in the face in the middle of a game you should have boycotted sport as a whole.
Football is about young men and young men are agressive and misbehaved. A guy from the lower leagues just got tanked on booze for two days took his car out and killed someone.
However, to examine morality - Dabo…yeah somehtings missing from that. Dabo is clearly the bigger guy and there is no way Barton smacked him about for nothing. Still though, not clever and undoubtedly wrong.
The cigar thing…sorry thats just charvas for you. I grew up with a load that used to stab each other with forks. TBH a bigger kid put a cigarette out on my cheek at school and nothing happened to him either.
Now my fave…. the little ‘innocent’ charver. Anyone who doesn’t know what’s going on INSTANTLY in that cctv is either a very sheltered individual or hasn’t been to the North of England after dark for many many years. That kid had it coming and as is usual in these circumstances when crying to the police when he got chinned.
If you live in a predominently working class area that is victim to ferral kids and huge violence issues and been party to the atoganisation and threats and have never thought of doing what he did, then your a bigger man that I. If not get of your high horse about him beating up a kid. He didnt, he beat a very real and undoubtedley very cocky, agressive little b*stard. and someone who just made out like a bandit in compensation given imo, he started it.
34 macitect // Jul 29, 2008 at 16:55
I am glad the club is sticking by this lad - and KK especially. I really, sincerely hope that if Barton’s problems are as bad as everyone seems to be making them out to be that he repays KK’s faith and plays his heart out for the Toon and keeps himself out of trouble.
Welcome back Joey!

Could never make my mind up about JB but now that the club has said he’s staying then i’ll support him like any other player, he’s done his time.
The video footage of the attck he made on the guy in Liverpool has me a bit puzzled, the guy who is getting hit had a few chances to just run away but he kept going back to JB and his crowd, maybe he was too plastered to know what was going on but maybe he was giving a load of verbals and just wouldn’t shut up.
Anyway i agree with what many have said though that he needs to make some sort of statement, apologise if he feels he should but at the least for me he has to show his intent for the future and show his commitment to this club.

anyways, not good publicity and something we def do not need at our club….
…what we do need is a young, energetic, combative, English, CM, hungry enough to be challenging for an international spot and creative enough to unlock defenses with a killer pass….oh wait I’m talking about the same guy
if Joey can quickly regain the standard he showed at the end of last season then everyone will forget all about his petulance and be singing his praises. I for one think he’s a classy player.
well done to NUFC for not throwing the baby out with the bath water.

For the record. I AM STILL A NEWCASTLE SUPPORTER! Always have been, always will be.
However, unlike some of you lot on here I’m not going to support any old clown just because he pulls on the black and white (I didn’t think much of Ferguson or Bowyer either).
As it stands I can’t see I’ll be away for too long anyway - it really is only a matter of time until that little meth fcuks up again and Kev finally sees sense.
This is the last I’m going to say on the matter - I’m not a fanny and I don’t even ride a pony (let alone a high horse).
42 bowburnmag // Jul 29, 2008 at 17:24
Faustino, I think you’re a lot closer to the truth than a lot of people would be willing to acknowledge. However, forgetting individual moral stances of Newcastle supporters, one public indiscretion too means we’re under the spotlight so whether we agree or not, the club and Barton need to appease the masses to avoid further damnation of the club, the fans and the region. We need to show further indiscretions will not be acceptable, he needs to be contrite. A unified message and we move on. He stays out of trouble, everyone’s a winner.
43 Capt Darlin // Jul 29, 2008 at 17:25
There no doubt that Joey let the club down, the fans, etc etc but lets just support him, the team and the managers decision. Because its the toon and because its Joey Barton there has been a media led witch hunt. If we’d of sacked him the same voices would of being saying we should of supported him etc. If the incident hadnt been on cctv then this would have all blown over. I dont remember people saying Jonathan Woodgate should have been banned for life after being found guilty for his racially aggravated affray against the asian lad when he was at dirty Leeds. We signed him after that incident so its laughable that some people are now saying they wont go back to the toon with Barton there. Get a grip!!! Bellaz got locked up for chinning a lass on the Quayside, no one was shouting for him to be banned for life. When John Hartson punted his West Ham team mate in the face a few years back they sorted it out like men between them and it went no further. None of this Dabo pressing charges rubbish. The last thing we need is come the start of the season if Barton is selected then his own fans giving him stick, lets cheer the lad on instead…… You know it makes sense!!! Howay the lads

so… let’s stick behind Barton and rip into one of our own who expressed his opinion (chicken)…now where is the consistency in that?
why does every comment that goes against common opinion result is personal attacks and name calling?
we could do more for the “image” of NUFC by showing a little more class and thoughtfulness on this blog than any statement or stance on the Barton affair.

On a serious note, I was at Jesmond Dene House hotel “doing lunch” this afternoon, and speaking to the staff (who I know) said that NUFC have reserved two of their apartments from today - indefinatley. 55 Stamford Toon // Jul 29, 2008 at 18:15
Well done Chicken for speaking your mind and standing by your principles. To those who have slagged him off for doing that then you should be ashamed. You will support a thug who didn’t get what he deserved (he didn’t even do his six months and ‘got off’ any real punishment by pleading guilty to the other offence) because of his name, money and flash barrister and then you knock someone for having principles. But then I suppose you are like the majority of people about nowadays full of self interest and totally lacking in morals. Shame really. If he had beaten you or your sons then I suppose you would have got on your high horses and joined the ‘jail them nd throw away the key’ brigade. Those who wish to make a stand could still attend matches but buy no mechandise and remain silent whenever JB is introduced or does something on the field, even remain silent if he scores. An apology would help and at least 12 months good behaviour although I am not sure he will last that long before reverting to type and falling under the influence of alcohol addiction yet again. I am sorry that the club could not make a stand to give some sort of lead and guidance for all the many young supporters and acadamy lads.
56 Andreas // Jul 29, 2008 at 18:17
In my opinion the real issue regarding Barton’s Liverpool incident shouldn’t be “the slap” but rather why the f**k JB was out drunk at 5am when he supposedly was ill (or injured).
57 A geordiedoonsooth // Jul 29, 2008 at 18:18

Tom_Toon I doubt you’d feel the same if Rooney played for us and was scoring 30 goals a season.
In fact, I think most people would conveniently forget, like we will all conveniently forget this episode if in a year’s time Barton has proven himself in front of us.
68 Barry Cock // Jul 29, 2008 at 18:39
Stamford wrote “he didn’t even do his six months and ‘got off’ any real punishment by pleading guilty to the other offence”.
If you offence warrants a jail sentence of less than 4 years, you only serve half of it. Barton did this by spending 2 weeks or so in jail in January and doing the other 74 days to make up the 3 months.
Yes, I know its daft to sentence someone and have them only do half of it , but thats the way it is. Joey has done his time and I think he will be moved on in due course.

I blame Fat Sam for the Barton debacle anyway. The plan was between them fixtures over christmas to keep the players together over the christmas period in the same hotel before goin on to the next game. Fat Sam then changed the plans when a few senior players said they wanted to go home for these days and he backed down giving them days off to go home. The rest is history………

79 Spyro // Jul 29, 2008 at 18:56
Piers i would have Owen over Rooney any day TBH and i dont really rate Owen as high as some others on here. Rooney is not someone you can rely on to score goals, Owen is more reliable.
80 Tom_Toon // Jul 29, 2008 at 18:56
Piers - What are you talking about??????/
Im saying Rooney will never score 30 gaols in a season, he’ll never score 20.
81 Capt Darlin // Jul 29, 2008 at 18:58
Geordie Nick - Because we had two games in a short period, away games etc the plan was to keep them all together etc in my opinion it made sense to look after the best interests of the players in terms of their reponsibility to the club, stop your players from going out getting mortal over a period of fixtures when theres alot of points at stake. At the time i actually agreed with the decision to keep them all together. And as a manager thet are the decisions you have to make if you think it would benefit the team etc. But he made himself look weak by backing down to the players so his authority was undermined straight away……..
82 AndyNUFC // Jul 29, 2008 at 18:59
Rooney’s a big beefy second striker, Tevez is a small agile second striker. Owen is a fox in the box and alongside Viduka sounds on paper like the dream ticket.
83 bowburnmag // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:01
There seems to be a misguided notion/sentiment that as long as they’re “pulling on the black and white shirt” then everything’s alright “cos it’s the Toon”. What a load of toss. Fine, go to the match, support the lads. That’s all well and good. Nobody is forcing anybody to take a moral stance and deny Barton another chance nor themselves the right to watch a match because of his actions. But to suggest everything is alright as long as we’re all in it together doesn’t tell the full story. Most seem to recognise he’s done wrong. But people should be allowed to express opinion on either side of the debate. ‘United we stand, divided we fall’ and all that malarky but are we suggesting some will tolerate it just because it’s Newcastle United and we’re loyal until the end or that it happens every weekend on the lash? Makes us look every bit as as ‘thuggish’ in itself. We can still be loyal and condemn the bloke. Geordie Nick, just because you might have doled out a few hidings doesn’t make Barton’s actions any more appealing to the public. Hardly ingratiating for you either. Not that I’m judging, sh*t happens.

I’m not saying what Rooney is capable of (which let’s face it, you have no idea if he will score 30 goals next or any season.)
What I’m saying is if he did do that… My point being you would support someone who was great for the club, just like you will support Barton if he makes a miraculous turn around. Whether he will or not Barton will make a miraculous turn around is at present highly doubtful, but I’m sure you appreciate the point I’m trying to make.
He has been given a second chance and if he truly makes it, why shouldn’t we support him (in time)?
Respect to KK for taking that gamble and holding to HIS principles, just as Chicken is to his. No offence Chicken I’m sure you’re a great supporter but I’d back KK to the end of the earth because I have faith in the man.

spyro- owen may score a lot more goals than rooney but rooney brings a hell of a lot more to a match than owen, he creates a lot of goals for others hes not all about scoring goals and never will be but he is a class act and anybody who says hes not is a liar or just plain stupid

…then he should be a midfielder
88 Tom_Toon // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:03
I just HATE Rooney, petualant little chav, so hope he gets taught a lesson for his lunges at people, he could ruin careers if he connected with the intended player.
89 Geordie Nick // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:05
bowburnmag- im not sayin iv dished out hidings im sayin fights happen to everyone, barton hardly giv him a beatin did he, a few slaps, cant have done much damage cos the kid kept goin bak towards barton instead of walkin away. i never said bartons actions were appealing to anyone, i said it wud not have made it anywhere near a courtroom if he wasnt a premierhsip footballer, and it wudnt have
90 Spyro // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:05
“…he is a class act and anybody who says hes not is a liar or just plain stupid”
you shouldnt say things like this, it makes you sound like you can’t carry out a sensible argument
91 Geordie Nick // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:11
well i can carry out a sensible argument, but im not arguing am i, im stating a point, rooney is a class player and thts tht. if he wasnt he wudnt be playin for probably the best team in the world wud he. you may not like him urself but u cant deny he is a quality player
no he shudnt be a midfielder he shud be a second striker just like he is cos thts where hes most effective
92 normski1930z // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:11
well bowburnmag as i have sed on here many times before i ran with the clubs cru for many years and dished out plenty slappins and took quite afew am not condoning it but i just cant stand all this holier than thou everybody makes mistakes… and some ppl on here seem to want to turn it into a witch-hunt, i honestly believe the lad will in time be sorry for his actions….
93 Spyro // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:14
have you seen him play in midfield ? (not LW, in an AM position)
94 Geordie Nick // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:17
iv seen him play on the right/left side of midfield plenty of times yes and hes nowhere near as effective
95 Geordie Nick // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:20
hes not a midfielder, simple as that, if he was better in midfield im sure alex ferguson wud no about it
96 Black and White Blood // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:22
I would have Rooney’s name on my team sheet before Owen everyday of the week….He offers so much more to a team! I think England selections will reflect that too….
97 bowburnmag // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:23
Geordie Nick - sorry mate, that probably came out wrong. I was just trying to find a level to get my point across. I agree, of course I do. Sh*t happens every weekend in almost every fair-sized town. And you’re right again, his attack was sustained but no stamping, no knives, no glass. Just a flurry of fists in a bad-tempered rage. I’ve rarely got into any scrapes to be truthful but I was constantly pulling my mates out of them and under the influence arguably it was their fault a decent proportion of the time. There are lads at work who are just like that. Decent enough lads but go out, get mullered and have a barney. My point is that, some people shrug it off and others don’t. It’s the people who can’t shrug it off that are judging us. It’s a bad time to be associated with violence what with the wave of knife crime etc. People are condemning left, right and centre. Which puts us in a bad light. What I’m trying to say is that Keegan is getting behind him but on the condition that he doesn’t behave like that again. And we can show our own support but we as fans, Barton and the club need to be seen that we appreciate it’s bang out of order. Otherwise, we look like tw*ts. I disagree about the sentence purely because of the CCTV evidence. That’s enough to sentence him. But I’ll accept that it was followed up because he was famous and easier to trace from CCTV.

i was one on signing Barton singing his praises and overlooking his demon- i even compared him to Gerrard (in workrate and coverage of a pitch) i was disappointed last season-
but hell hes our kid, we ve kept him, no we can only hope king kev helps him control and ride his demon rather than be controlled by it!
joey you have it in you to do better, much better lets see if he can take advantage of KKs skills
if he doesnt, we all know that the King is no push over
99 Geordie Nick // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:26
i agree the cctv footage wud be enough to convict anybody, my point was that the victim only pressed charges because it was joey barton, had it been me or you who’d chinned him he more than likely wudnt have bothered even pressing charges and thts why it wudnt have made it to court

103 bowburnmag // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:33
Geordie Nick - aye fair point.
104 Spyro // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:34
Alex ferguson played Smith in midfield
105 bowburnmag // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:35
normski1930z - if I’m honest, I think that’s a totally different argument. I’m no fighter but I recognise there’s a genetic and natural urge in some blokes to fight. Some resist, others don’t. I know there are other things that go along with it - pride, belonging etc etc, I won’t go into it. I’ve played football with a few lads who have been around the block in that ‘environment’. Top blokes, nice as pie, polite as you like to girlfriends and mothers but nonethless like to seek out like-minded souls and batter each other daft. Not for me but hey each to their own and as long as it’s nowhere near me or my family go for your life (literally). My point being, these were different circumstances, or at least that is the public perception. Closer to the situation you might find Geordie Nick and Faustino are much closer to the truth. I think we just need to accept that we’ll not sway them on that front and far from being defiant, show a united front of remorse and accountability. The biggest problem is that he makes so many friggin mistakes but you’re right, he might well come out of it a better bloke. He says hopefully….

This is just a bad day for NUFC. He should be sacked for gross misconduct and bringing the club into disrepute.
I appreciate KK point of view about redemption but I think we will, as a club, live to regret this decision.
I think, in a time of rising violence, much of it alcohol fuelled, society should take a stand againts people who do such mindless violent acts.
I wish NUFC had taken such a moral stance.
Ah well. I just hope that clubs ban him from their grounds on the basis that he is a violent criminal. I would.
A bad day.
107 normski1930z // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:41
nee probs with ya comment bowburn i served my time in durham for violent disorder and chinning a copper…..i will never forget that time and never want to go back as i now have a 4 year old and will do everything in my power to make sure he dosent go down the same road…but then again when he becomes a man how can i stop him…
108 Neil W // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:41
As a society we condone or look the other way at violent behaviour that blights our towns and cities.
NUFC have just done that.
A bad day.
109 Steve Mills // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:43
I can understand both points of view. You can’t argue he’s a thug. But to be honest if you gou out into town on a friday night you’ll see worse than what happened. John Terry, Denis Wise, Bowyer and others all got away with it, and have been forgiven. And you could argue that in any job he would have been sacked. But in how many other jobs can you be valued as a 6 million pound asset for your company? If we sack him now we write the cash off we paid for him, someone else signs him for free. We could sell him off cheap, but who’d buy him? We’d get peanuts for him.
Surely the sensible thing to do is to let the fuss die down, then sell him in January. And to be honest its not like our squad can afford to lose him, its tiny, and the money could be spend better else where. At least he gives us some cover for Butt in centre mid.
He really is on last chance saloon, and I hope he takes it. Getting on his back won’t help, its done and dusted now.
110 oga // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:47
For arguments sake Barton or Parker?
111 domtoon // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:49
In an industry where players getting paid £60,000 per week is the norm, did you really think the same rules as a regular job would apply?
Nooooooo I don’t think so somehow.
112 normski1930z // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:51
@oga barton….parker was and still is very over rated…
