McDermott: New Signings On Way – No Doubt About That

Terry McDermott has moved to assure Newcastle United fans,  that manager Kevin Keegan is working hard at signing new players.

Terry McDermott – with the Newcastle gaffer

Keegan is looking to bring in new reinforcements and is working hard with Director Of Football Dennis Wise right now, to do just that.

There are 33 days left in the transfer market, but we expect Newcastle to sign two new defenders this week.

Newcastle seem very close to signing 26 year-old Argentine and Deportivo defender Fabricio Coloccini, and terms have already been agreed between the Tyneside club and the player.

Deportivo are holding out for more money from Newcastle, but have already run foul of both Newcastle and Fabricio’s agent Marcelo Lombilla, because of this.

We wouldn’t be surprised if Newcastle announce, before the end of the week, they have taken up the option to bring in 22 year-old Frenchman, Sebastien Bassong, who played solidly, in central defense, for Newcastle at Doncaster last Saturday.

However, the Frenchman and Argentinian may not be the only new arrivals by the time Newcastle travel to Old Trafford on August 17th, according to right-hand man McDermott.

Speaking after the 1-0 loss against Doncaster at the weekend, he told the Evening Chronicle:

“I am sure there will be new arrivals – I’ve got no doubts about that.”

“But we’ve got to concentrate on what we’ve got here at the minute.” “The lads are training really well.”

“We were beaten at Doncaster, but at Hartlepool we finished strong and, until we handed Doncaster a goal, we did OK.”

“It was a bad mistake by Jose Enrique for the goal – but that’s football for you.” “It’s best to get these things out of the way.”

“It’s different when it means something in terms of points or progress in the cup.” “You’re devastated when it happens to you in that situation.”

“Hopefully, it doesn’t happen again in the season.”

There are also reports that we are fighting Arsenal, for 24 year-old Swiss midfielder Gokhan Inler, although we’ll do well to beat off Arsenal, if they are indeed interested in the Udinese Calcio midfielder.

But if we can bring in Coloccini, Bassong and Inler, that would be a great start, and we’d need just a couple more players to be all set for the new season.

Comments welcome.

if we got Coloccini, Bassong and Inler I aint sure there would be ‘a couple more’, apart from young Spear. But I certainly would not be complaining – i’d love to see them through the door!

I can’t help but feel that Inler is just talk though, he sounds v settled at his club and has expressed his desire to stay, and there have been no official comments linking us with the player.

    Agree FGibs !
This window has mashed my nut to bits.

If Ashley spent about 40m we would be a decent outfit heading into the new season…just wish he would spend 100m and really beef up the team and push for a Euro place.

Hope this depo dude gets signed today my head is ready to nut some walls : 0

I too would love to sign another CF preferably Ashton but i cannot see Ameobi and Smith moving on any time soon.

Dont know about Bassong i didnt see the Donny game but We would have on our books Collocini (hopefully) Taylor, Faye, Cacapa, Edgar and some good young defenders i personally think we are well stocked at centre back.

I no we’re officially no further forward transfers-wise but i notice the we hate Mike Ashley brigade has quietened down a lot and i for one am very glad to see it! I suppose u cant blame them tho it seems strange to me as well to be supporting a team that is run by sensible business and football people.

No doubt two years ago this collocini news would have broke 2 days bvefore deadline day and would have ended up paying 15m at midnight on the 31st to get him.

That said im glad terry sed this, altho im sure he knows absolutly nothing about whats going on hopefully hes just relaying what keegans told him!

I reckon we’ll get a defender (collocini or otherwise) and maybe a young squad player for a fullback position. I think we’ll do ok with that as long as we dont get too many injuries!

Totally agree Darren,we will never get this chance again with Keegan at the helm and i just think if keegan is backed fully with sensible buys we really could push on.

Let’s be honest we have the backbone of a decent team and with solid investment we could really start to knock on the European Door.

Mike you have to back the messiah this is a one off chance to really let Keegan work his magic…Back him and take your place in Toon Folklore.

If the messiah is not backed and supported fully my fear is that he will walk..Keegan is no fool and he needs to be backed now..he is black and white through and through, understands the club, the fans and the players and I like everyone on here would hate to see him go.

Back the Messiah..the return of the entertainers and back in business.

I don’t know much about Coloccini but if he is half as good as you are all hyping him up to be then he must be great.
I’d settle for Coloccini, Bassong and one other player this window. Arda Turan would be ace. Or Baptista, or Arshavin.
Stephen Warnock would be amazing, but in this day and age a bid of £3million is really insulting for a guy on the verge of the England team.
I don’t really want to see us in for the likes of Inler or Derdiyok because to my mind they are medicore players hyped up by their agents. My new rule is – If I ain’t seen them play I’m not going to get excited by youngsters.
I mean really what has Wesley Baheng or Tomas Kadar or Andy Carroll for that matter acheived.

Mediocre players, hyped by there agents, if that`s the case then why is Wenger bidding on Inler ?
A most astute judge of players Michael.
The Moutinhos, Arshavins,Ardas, De Jongs and De La Reds aint comming, live with it !

CB: Colloccini, Taylor, Faye, Cacapa, Bassong

I think we have to contract a left-back. I absolutely don’t trust in Jose Enrique in defensive roles.

Well i would certainly be happy with Coloccini as he is top class and i would like to see Arda and a CAM (don’t know who ) and i want Smith, Ameobi and Duff gone. Then the team would challenge for European football next season.

We probably won’t sell anybody because our squad is small and nobody wants the players we want to sell (ameobi).
As for signings, we need a centre back although I have a feeling coloccini deal wont happen.
We also need somebody to challenge Nicky Butt in the holding role, and a playmaker. However Keegans recent comments about the midfield suggest that neither of these positions are a priority to him.
Cover at left back, not so much right back because Geremi can do that.
The only striker I could imagine us signing would be a young player who will just be providing cover e.g derdiyok.

The likes of Arshavin, van der vaart etc. are way out of our league. A few years ago we may have attracted them by tripling their current wages and paying a huge transfer fee. But now we are more sensible as a club so if we were to sign a playmaker I’m sure it would be much more low key than any that have been mentioned.

Dantoon the voice of reason m8! lol! as much as it would be amazing to sign berbatov i just dont see MA splashing for him, unless the reason we’ve been penny pinching is so we can afford both the transfer fee & wages? i wonder? tell who i’d love to see as playmaker, Riquelme! he’d be awseome! we should go for him wouldn’t cost as much as the likes of arshavin & modric & would be a legend with the toon army! thoughts lads?
