Portsmouth and Newcastle are both reported to be monitoring Luisao’s situation at Portuguese powerhouse, Benfica.

Luisao - capped 24 times for Brazil
The Brazil international has been capped 24 times by the 5 times World Champions, and he has been at Benfica since 2003, playing over 90 games for them.
The 6′4″ defender is a powerful player, and it seems he may want to leave the Portuguese giants this summer.
He said today:
“I need to find new impetus in my career.”
“I am a professional and will give my maximum for Benfica while I remain here.”
Luisao then said he would consider all offers, but we’re not sure he’s exactly on Newcastle’s radar screen right now.
We expect Fabricio Coloccini and Sebastien Bassong to join the club by the end of the week, and we’re not sure Kevin will need another center-back, if we can those two in.
After all, we still have Steven Taylor, Abdoulaye Faye, Claudio Cacapa and young David Edgar, who can also play central defense, so we should be fine there - if we can get those two in.
On the other hand, Luisao may be one to go after, if there are any hiccups with these two transfer targets.
Comments welcome.

Great player, get him in!
2 Tom_Toon // Jul 29, 2008 at 14:17
No need if Coloccini is coming.
Have metioned Luisao a fair bit on here. He is solid but fairly laboured and clumbsy (gives away silly fouls).
3 scott9 // Jul 29, 2008 at 14:20
agreed tom toon stick with Coloccini then if we get bassong and improve our bid for warnock i think we will be solid in defense with exellent back up for one
4 horsieo // Jul 29, 2008 at 14:23
Benfica captain, 6 4″ and 24 caps for the world champions, he’s head and shoulder above taylor and cacapa in terms of strength, composure and a team leader. He would be a great signing
5 Danish_Magpie // Jul 29, 2008 at 14:31
For CB I think we should bring in Coloccini. Even Bassong will not be necessary, because we will have Coloccini as our star CB and Faye and Taylor fighting for the other spot (Faye prob. edging at the start of the season. I am not one of the people that thinks Taylor is absolutely crap as I think that’s a bit sensationalist, but Faye was better than him last season). We then have Edgar as 4th choice, and Cacapa can cover in extreme cases, as well as providing a mentor-role for the young defenders.
If we fail in our bid for Coloccini, we should consider Luisao, but let’s just hope we get Coloccini, and then bring in a LB.
6 Tom // Jul 29, 2008 at 14:32
Bassong and Coliccini please! Thanks but no thanks Luisao!
7 Ross G // Jul 29, 2008 at 14:32
I think Luisao is one of the most over-rated CB in top-flight football. I have seen him make some horrid performances. I think this is a rubbish story. One of my best mates played in the Sporting Lisbon youth team, and knows his Portuguese football and he agrees the guy is over-rated. He is no better than Cacapa, who i would let go anyway. My four CB would be Taylor, Coloccini, Faye, and Bassong. We need another LB and CM as I have said before

11 robertsa // Jul 29, 2008 at 14:39
dont want him and dont care about him. Just want to see collocini joins newcastle going round on the bottom of sky sports news. The only thing that would make me turn from colloocini is if we got cuellar and rat at the same time.
12 toonfanjonny // Jul 29, 2008 at 14:42
i think coloccini, torosidis and pranjic (sp?) the croatian left back and a hard working all round mid and were sorted
13 GM // Jul 29, 2008 at 14:44
As well as CB I think we need cover at LB more than RB as enrique is too error prone, his fault for the goal on saturday and he was error prone last season as well.
Any thoughts on a posible candidate?
14 robertsa // Jul 29, 2008 at 14:46
rat konchesky would be me lbs. But probly the favourate lb to come is insua
15 irish magpie // Jul 29, 2008 at 14:51

16 Ericles // Jul 29, 2008 at 14:52

Alright Fernando mate? Damn that slap in the face from Robbie Keane must be stinging, come to take it out on us? Get ready for Berba’s departure mate, thats gonna be the icing on the cake.
RE Joey Barton, good. I know how alot of you feel about him lads, and yes, he did some daft things, but what I saw from him under KK towards the end of last season was very promising and I think he will be a key member of the squad this season. Nobody is perfect, everyone makes mistakes. The lad has talent and is the closest to a creative mid we have. Welcome back Joey, knuckle down and show us you’ve learned from your mistakes.
33 Danish_Magpie // Jul 29, 2008 at 15:17
Haha. Such a short notice by the club on Barton. Whilst it is kinda frustrating, I do like the professionalism that is taking place at St. James’ at the moment. No need to say any more than that, and feed into the bollocks media stuff.
34 9 Shearer // Jul 29, 2008 at 15:19

Alreet Nando.
What the hell are Spurs going to do without Keano and Berba next season. Don’t tell me your counting on Darren Bent?!?!
Regarding Luisao, I’d rather have Coloccini, but if we can’t get him, Luisao would be a decent enough alternative. Not as good, but good enough.

Add that money to the 20 mill we will be getting from the north easts biggest club and we have a nice little transfer kitty to add to the 30 mill we had before sales. Maybe we could buy owen as back up for one of our new strikers. I am sure he would come if we made an offer.

59 harrier // Jul 29, 2008 at 15:51
Just to clarify - spurs have spent:
Modric - 16.5
Dos Santos - 4 rising to 8.6
Gomes - 7.9
Total - 33
David Bently - 20 mill
Replacement for Robbie Keene - 15-20
So - Spurs will have spent 48-53 mill already - do you see them spending another 10 for coloccini as well? They’d better break into top 4 for those kind of figures - or they will be in some financial trouble.
60 Stardust // Jul 29, 2008 at 15:56

Very sorry to see we are keeping Barton.
Surely we are better off cutting our losses now and saving 12M in future wages.
Most importantly keeping the goodwill in the football community.
Those videos just look worse and worse every time you see them.
I am sure Barton has stopped certain players joining our club.
On a different note, the 6 players we let go hardly ever or never played and the 2 we brought in look quite useful.
Add to them, the youngsters hopefully we will see knocking on the door of the first team (Lua, Kadar, KRUL, Edgar, Tozer and Kamblera) and the future looks quite good.

Last season spuds scored 66 goals and 30 of them came from keane and berba and they combined for 18 assists. At the same time spuds conceded 61 goals. So far they have signed 2 midfielders and a goalkeeper untested in the english game and they are going to sign another midfielder doing nothing to sort out their porous defence. Not to mention that they are losing their most potent strike partnership. Anyone can see the problem here?

Simon - Fernando what shift are you on at Nissan tomorrow?
85 micepie // Jul 29, 2008 at 16:49
Liverpool are behaving very strangely this transfer window! For a start, Barry is worth maximum 12M – though that’s pushing it – and Keane….well, he’s pretty useful but Crouch is a far better player and Liverpool have ended up losing out on 8-10M and also have a player a couple of years older too.
As for the Spurs fans on here, yes it is a little pathetic. Generally, Arsenal fans are mostly more intelligent, thoughtful and respectful whilst a lot of Spurs fans are either in a permanent state of aggravation because they’re always behind Arsenal or they simply behave in a chavvish manner (wide-boy spiv…I don’t think I can say cockernee). It doesn’t especially bother me if we finish behind Spurs this year. It’s not just about success for any one team over another, it’s about the nature and character of a club. And Toon are just a lot more likeable than Spurs (except perhaps with the Southern press k***ends)!

Benitez today told Liverpool Echo and Liverpool Post (both well respected and well connected local rags) that he still wanted Barry but would have to sell to buy. He ruled out selling Arbeloa (£7m bid received from Spain).
£12m bid for Alonso - I think they would sell but would he come?
I think he is what we need (along with several defenders)

Ed I agree with Mag pie. If post 83 doesn’t get the child banned what will.

Oliver….We are doing smart buys,Coloccini will activate the number 17 if they dont agree the transfer fee soon.In case that happens we will have 2 Argentine first 11 members in our squad for less than 8 mill pounds.
If you wanted to buy those 2,for sure it would have costed you at least 22 mill.
Now you will have a one season wonder(there’s a big IF) in your team with Arshavin who was available for less than 6 mill in January and a overhyped Bentley.
Do you really think that Bent can replace Keane and Arshavin to replace Berbatov who for sure is joining Man Utd.
One injury for Woodgate in the next season….who’s gonna take his place…..Dawson??
Your team has no heart no soul…and even that trophy you have from last season i wouldnt exchange it with even one season when we were in the CL not long time ago.
Get yourself ready to be the next Leeds in the next 4 years, cause if you dont qualify for CL spot this season you gonna suffer big time.

Soccer Club of Metz and Newcastle United found a financial agreement concerning the international defender hope Sébastien Bassong.
Very soon he will sign a contract with the English club, that had been put to the test throughout last week.
Starting at FC Metz, Sébastien Bassong carried the dark red shirt to 87 appearances. He registered a goal, at the time of the season 2006/2007.

MAG PIE - post 100. I wasn’t saying I think he’s quick…..He might be quick running the 100 metres but on the pitch it’s barely perceptible to the naked eye.
111 Danny G // Jul 29, 2008 at 18:50
Sweet…I have a good feeling about Bassong…He went to Clairefontaine!
112 Tom_Toon // Jul 29, 2008 at 18:51
Yep, they produce some quality.
Henry, Gallas, Ben Arfa, Meghni and others.

Just a quick point to those who are slating the Spurs guy about losing Keane - I reckon that they are rubbing their hands together at getting shot of him for that!! There’s no way on God’s earth that I would pay that for Robbie Keane and I reckon Liverpool will be cursing next year!! And as the guy says, when they sell Berbatov to ManUre they will make a small fortune from that too. They can buy some wicked younger players for that and I reckon they’ll be laughing this season!
On a plus point of the deal though, Benitez has said he has to sell to get Barry in now - anybody got any particular preferences of players we could take off Liverpool to slot nicely into the team? Did Riise sign for another team?
Also, does anyone know if Quedrue (free agent) is still up for grabs? As if we get Coloccini and some proper cover for RB then perhaps we could grab him for cheap to cover LB??
FINGERS CROSSED FOR SOME ARRIVALS TOMORROW…..EVEN BLOODY BASSONG WOULD BE SOME LIGHT RELIEF TO THIS TENSION!!
114 Steeley // Jul 29, 2008 at 18:54
Oh, and another. Anyone reckon Ben Haim might be another option for LB? Or is he old news, and too much of a money-grabber now??
115 Mike // Jul 29, 2008 at 18:59
Been wondering what Fernandos obsession with the toon is and I think i’ve sussed it-Kevin Keegan! Just have a look at his managerial record against spuds, not only does he nearly ALWAYS beat them-it’s usually a total hammering! NUFC 7 Spuds 1, another game where we got 6, even last season with a team that wasn’t his own we thumped them 4-1 at their hole of a ground! Oh and I recall a memorable cup game where spuds were coasting 3-0 at half time only for a certain Kevin Keegans Man City team to score 4 in the second half!! Anyone out there know exactly how many Keegans teams have scored against them? Sure would be an interesting stat
116 normski1930z // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:00
riise signed for roma weeks ago mate…
117 neeraj // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:31
riise who??????
hey oliver
u ppl are now trusting a player whom u tried to sell all summer and criticized all season…….
u think spurs buying an array of stars is gonna help
let me remind u, your coach is spanish he would prefer a second div spanish player over bent
thats why he is selling the best striking partnership in the league
with keane and berba out
who is gonna score
and a suggestion from a nufc fan buy some defender
who can compensate the lack of goals which would be scored this season
118 oga // Jul 29, 2008 at 19:31

Glad to see Bassong has signed. Looked pretty good at Doncaster. Just hope he gets the ‘46′ shirt. He has a right to it now.
