Bassong Signing In Process – Passes Medical, Agrees Terms

July 30th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 180 Comments

Newcastle United have reported, on their official web site, that the club has indeed agreed a fee with FC Metz for their promising French Under-21 defender Sebastien Bassong.

seb-bassong.jpg

Sebastien Bassong - agreed fee, agreed terms and passed medical – great!

The 22-year-old French Under-21 International has also agreed personal terms and passed a medical with the Newcastle United club.

Newcastle United are now said to be in the process of completing the formalities of the transfer.

Bassong, meanwhile, has already traveled to Mallorca with the rest of the Newcastle squad, since he was earlier announced by Newcastle as being part of that squad, ahead of this weekend’s Summer Cup.

We would like to welcome Sebastien to the club, and certainly from the comments he has already made, he is delighted to be at Newcastle – and seems a really nice lad.

We think he’s going to do just great at the club – hope so anyway.   :D
Comments welcome.

Read somewhere Bassong said something along the lines of this wasn’t his dream move.

YOU DON’T SAY THAT EVEN IF IT’S HOW YOU FEEL!!!!!!

    lol true

  • 6 Tom // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:07 PM

Lol, who cares if its not his dream move!? How many players who aren’t from the area dream of playing for Newcastle? From what he has said he wants to knuckle down, work hard and fight his way into the centre back positions! Good for him! Now lets get Collocini nailed down and start looking at the other positions; left back (shorey/warnock/insua) centre midfield (inler) and a target man (insert name here) :D

  • 7 simon winham // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:08 PM

great signing now for fabricio coloccini and then maybe another midfielder let’s say baptista

    The 22-year-old French Under-21 International
    ——————————–
I know it’s legit but it doesn’t sound right does it?! haha. Good signing from what i’ve heard of him. Snap up Coloccini and we’ll have a very very good central defense next year.

  • 10 dontoon // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:15 PM

all we need is 2 defenders 1 creative mid and 1 striker and we have depth in our squad

  • 11 gorskino10 // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:16 PM

Good move. Insua has looked dodgy at left back on the game on now, please get sjekbred or inlar. Don’t
You think that paul ince has sold bentley will he offer 9mill for milner which I want to happen we can get inlar plus skejibred or someone else for that money what would be great. Also dontoon has the right amount we need I would be fustrated if we don’t atleast get that many.

  • 12 bowburnmag // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:17 PM

domtoon – I prefer the honesty compared to the normal cliched soundbites. Quite refreshing and like Tom says his message was much more encouraging. Few others like Zogs could take heed. But time will tell if he’s just another one paying lipservice.

  • 13 bowburnmag // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:21 PM

dontoon – it’s quite simple when you say it like that. Pity we’re making such friggin hard work of it.

  • 14 DanToon // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:22 PM

    ToonEskimo we need Coloccini…

  • 15 Danish_Magpie // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:23 PM

I think a young, athletic France U-21 international left-sided central defender who can cover at LB as well for 1.5m is another good piece of busines. No, it does not set the world alight, but I prefer spending money wisely than spending money for the sake of spending money. Let other fans brag about how much their club is spending. I wonder what Leeds fans think of the current Tottenham spending? Looks a lot like Elland Road did not too long ago..

  • 18 domtoon // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:26 PM

What happened to football eh? What happened to young lads working their socks off to play for their local? I know we’ve got Taylor, but the old days are long gone and we are now stuck with Frenchies like him and Zog sulking it up with silly comments like that.

I’m not living in a wonderland where all players coming to Newcastle should be dreaming of it, but dammit, he shouldn’t be saying we’re not his dream move, even if that is how he feels!

I guess this is what happens when you get paid umpteen thousands per week. Just makes me a little sad that’s all :o (

Hope he’s good for us though. For £1.5 million, it’s not a bad gamble (now when you reread that imagine a stack on £1.5 million in cold hard cash, it does make you realise how silly football has become – uber-competetive and no more ‘passion’??)

  • 19 faustino // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:26 PM

As far as Im concerned this is, in a sense, Ramage’s replacement and now we need to replace Rozenhal with Coloccini or equivalent standard.

  • 20 Tom // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:27 PM

Owen will be staying behind to work on his fitness, he has just gotten over mumps, if the stories are true!

I’m surprised to see Martins going out though!

  • 21 gorskino10 // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:28 PM

bowburn we always make hard work of things that what we do. I feel N Zog or Milner will leave to free up some cash, we’ve missed out on colocini as he would sign by today for mallorca trip. I just know I’ll be watching sky sports news on transfer Market deadline day knowing we will make a panic buy.

  • 22 JonGoodwyn // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:31 PM

I just wonder why they’ve put this up on the website when it isn’t finalised..

  • 23 Tom // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:35 PM

The only way they will sell the zog or milner is if we bring in another out and out winger, in my opinion! :) He wants to keep them both if he can. We haven’t missed out of COllocini, it might just take a while for him to arrive. If he pulls a Webster, we may have to wait a fortnight, but I still feel there is a good chance we will sign him still!

Jon, I think the reason its up is that its all but done. Medical, personal terms, fee, all agreed and passed, its just the trivial bits of paperwork etc to finish. It also probably saves them amending the article about the team flying out!!

  • 24 bowburnmag // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:35 PM

gorskino10 – yeah I’ve been saying the same myself. It reeks of familiarity, rush jobs at the last minute. I was optimistic those days were gone but two weeks on Sunday we face the current champions. Potentially without a strikeforce. Scary.

  • 25 Spuggy // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:36 PM

Tom – Bassong is left footed and can cover left back too so that position is now sorted and we’ve added a bit more resiliance to CB position too. If we do sign Collocini that will be a quality CB in the bag and cover for RB too – ergo defense sorted!

I think its an absolute certainty that we will sign a CM playmaker (we never really replaced Dyer and with Emre leaving etc.) , with a big striker DESIRABLE, but wouldn’t be the end of the world if we didn’t sign one this season with not being in Europe.

I recon if Collocini is signed (everything crossed), KK will sign only one more player, being the creative CM.

Guthrie is gonna be developed as a holding CM to replace/support Butt’s position and a few more of the promising young’uns brought on in 1st team cameo’s or loaned out (Edgar, Kadar, Tozer, Lua Lua etc). Think we’ll keep a hold of Carroll with our current CF line-up and potential injury problems.

Owen, Viduka, Martins, Smith and Carroll is a long way from the worst strikeforce in the premiership, especially with a better defense and midfield behind them. I think a fit Viduka and Owen/Martins is in the top three best strikeforce partnerships in the premier league, probably just behind Torres/Keane and Rooney/Tevez, with Berbatov and Bent in forth.

  • 26 Tom // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:44 PM

Am I the only person that hopes Zamblera gets a couple of goes this season? He looks like he could be a prospect, along with Kadar and Tozer!

Also, has anything been mentioned about the couple of young kids we have had on trial? Nothing seems to have been said about them at all! Hope Aaron Spear officially signs on soon too!!

sure hell beleive she is watching him from above
Oba Martins = Toon Ledgend allready

  • 28 dcbashore // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:51 PM

Bassong said that it wasn’t a dream come true to him, but that he didn’t expect it to happen. I took that NUFC isn’t his personal dream club but realizes the honor of wearing the black and white. Nothing really distasteful about it IMHO.

  • 29 toonarmy08 // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:55 PM

is it right that oba has travelled with the squad ??if so cant believe the guy -legend .Really hope collocini arrives shortly ,also anyone notice kk on the phone at the airport ,hope it was collocini’s agent :) !!

  • 30 Toonboy // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:57 PM

and he said “he’ll be happy to sit on the bench” thats what all toon fans want to hear lol, only joking another body in the club can only be good news, keep it up kk.

  • 31 ca6sst // Jul 30, 2008 at 10:58 PM

Don’ t think Newcastle can go wrong with this signing, seems to be modest enough to accept he may not always make it into the 1st team (unlike Taylor) and strong enough to tell Cacapa what to do (based on fans statements from the game)!

All those going on about MO staying behind, he said on an NUFC TV interview that he was most likely to be involved in he PSV/Valencia games as he lost a lot of muscle when he had the mumps and he had problems in his past with weak muscles and he doesnt’t want to repeat them.

Personally Toon fans are hard to please (i know i’ll get a lot of stick for that!) but it’s true, i had one mate tell me the toon were shit after i told him i renewed my season ticket and also there are alot that are used to the FFS period when we spent money on crap players! but regardless – i wouldn’t miss being able to go to the home games for anything!! hence my season ticket renewed and my optimisim is still there – i prefer a chairman who says nothing to FFS who just BS’d the toon fans for years!!

  • 32 Matthew Tom // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:01 PM

I’d have put up with a few Frenchies like Robert Ginola, Distin and Saha if we’d had them longer.

    we should get coloccini soon

  • 35 Matthew Tom // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:06 PM

I agree we should sign an attacking midfield player, but we do have good options there if we don’t. I like the idea of Milner there, N’Zogbia can develop there as well as the wing, and before either of them I’d put Barton in.

He needs an attacking brief, and he was great for Man City in an attacking role only a year ago. He didn’t quite find his range last season but I reckon he will surprise a few people this year.

  • 36 toon4lyf // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:11 PM

  • 38 JC // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:17 PM

    In-Arshavin, Coloccini, Warnock, Cardozo, Burdisso-£40-55m
    Out-Duff,Ameobi, Cacapa,Smith,Gemeri-£20m

That would be my ideal signings but we would be lucky to get any of them!!

  • 39 AndyNUFC // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:17 PM

No way will ashley pay 11million for 1 player, even though Coloccini is class. Now is the time to pay the player 5million euro and get him to buy out his contract.

  • 40 bowburnmag // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:19 PM

JC – don’t you think we’d also be extremely lucky to get half of that for the rabble you mentioned?

  • 41 normski1930z // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:19 PM

bowburnmag-I said we’d be lucky to get any of them. What do you mean???

  • 44 AndyNUFC // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:27 PM

we NEED Coloccini in to sort the defence out… An argentinian Woodgate if you will… Then some proper, “top 4″ quality midfielder.

  • 45 bowburnmag // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:28 PM

JC – I thought you were just referring to the players we want to sign. I just meant, even in this current market, £20m for our lot is a bit optimistic if you ask me. Average of £4m for those five?

  • 46 JC // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:31 PM

bowburnmag- I see what you mean now. I was just trying to make myself feel better with those figures. Yeah there is no way in hell we will get £20m for them!!!

  • 47 AndyNUFC // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:31 PM

We could get about £11-13million for those players he mentioned before, but I wouldn’t get rid of them yet.

  • 48 Irish John // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:31 PM

It looks like we have bid 8.6 mill…They want 9.5 mill up front with another 1.5 in add ons later….My personal opinion, i think there asking a fair price for a real quality player…

Just stump up the mill and get it done…Come on Ash, we have been crying out for a top class defender for about 15 years..Our wait could be over

  • 49 JC // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:37 PM

Get rid of them when (sorry if) we bring in quality in their positons

  • 50 AndyNUFC // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:37 PM

    not really john, Woodgate anyone?

  • 51 Irish John // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:39 PM

very true Andy..Woodgate was class..Seems a long time since we have actualy had a top class defender :)

  • 52 Shearer#1 // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:39 PM

Coloccini’s 1 of the best defenders in europe. Pleeeeaaassseee sign him Ashley before it’s too late. Arshavin’s agreed terms with Spurs :( I really hope we go for Arda & Aaron Lennon.

  • 53 Dondatta13 // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:42 PM

With regards to the stalemate in the Coloccini transfer. We should not be held to ransom. Apparently we have been negotiating this transfer for months and once we agree to pay the fee in question, the price gets hiked up ? There president did the same thing with the Luque deal.

We either pay the new price ….. or we hand the lad the money to buy out his contract.

I know which one I would like to see and its not the first option.

  • 54 AndyNUFC // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:42 PM

Shearer, I can’t tell with Spurs whether they’re being careless with their money or building one of the best teams and solidifying a top 5 spot next year.

  • 55 Irish John // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:45 PM

I agree to a certain degree , but im sure deportivo are’nt the only club that do this ..I can remember us doing it last year with west ham over dyer….

In fairness though , what there asking is a fair price for a real quality player IMO..These are the prices Ashley has to pay if he wants to get real quality in.

Just give them the extra mill we got off the dyer deal ..Happy days :)

  • 56 natedawg // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:47 PM

good signing one more and a striker or mid field dynamo and things wont seem as bleak as they did one week ago

  • 57 Dondatta13 // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:51 PM

My point being the football world is watching, if we get held to ransom now it will set a precedent and other selling clubs will have us over a barrel. Im not sure we are talking about a million here, they want about 1.5mill PLUS additional add ons. I think we made a fair offer for a player that seems to want out BIG TIME…

  • 58 Shearer#1 // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:54 PM

Andy, Spurs midfield next season is gonna be Bentley, Jenas, Modric, Dos Santos & Arshavin palying behind Pavlyuchenko, Milito or Villa. That’s an awesome front 6! I would love some of those players at the toon.

  • 59 Irish John // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:57 PM

problem with spuds is they are going to be caught on set peices..They only have woodgate ( probably injured) who can head a balll..The rest are about 4ft tall…

  • 60 No Hands // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:01 AM

I think Bassong and Coloccini would be enough for the defence. We’ve added a young, hungry versatile lefty and an experienced, versatile first-teamer. It also allows our current youngsters to strive for a first-team place, should they find outstanding form.

However, if we do not sign an attacking player truly gifted in the more technical aspects of footy then there is a chance this season will be a disappointment. Our central midfield has worried me for a couple of seasons and the soliditity of Butt is also no longer a given. An athletic battler would be a lovely luxury but an injection of pure flair in central midfield would help justify the price of admission.

  • 61 Shearer#1 // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:03 AM

Yea Spain didn’t have any tall players but they still won the Euros coz they had so many skillful midfielders. It’s gonna be the same with Spurs. (not saying they’ll win the league but they’ll be a force)

  • 62 Dondatta13 // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:06 AM

No Hands ….. Ah men to that!

I was always preying for a VDV for our midfield but he looks set to join R Madrid. KK will probably pluck some obscure South American player to bedazzle the Toon faithful! Well … I hope anyway.

  • 63 Oba // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:14 AM

Spurs are the only team atm that look capable of breaking the top four. They have confirmed the Bentley signing btw, 18mil. :|

At least their chairman is showing ambition and isn’t afraid to pay for quality.

  • 64 AndyNUFC // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:21 AM

£18million for Bentley is nearly as bad as £17million for Bent. Must be a ‘Bent’ thing wahey! We really do need somebody… somebody top quality to provide the firepower for next season. VDV or someone who will take a game by the scruff of the neck and put those killer passes through for the frontmen. A good spine to the team will ensure 8-6, that’s, Coloccini, Barton/a new AM and Vid/Owen upfront.

  • 65 micepie // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:24 AM

Oba, though we would have been excited by many of Spurs signings I’m also glad at the same time. Spurs are clearly going for it but at a gamble and it may take a while (Man City clicked with many changes but that’s quite unusual).

I believe Portsmouth are most lilely to finish 4th, above Spurs.

  • 66 No Hands // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:26 AM

Sod Spurs! The market is absolutely mental. Bentley is good but I think some people get blinded by brand names! It wasn’t long ago that Arsene refused to get him out the garage. Dos Santos makes N’Zogbia look like Beardsley in terms of attitude and Modric… well he’s probably going to do quite well. But they’ve also dismantled their strikeforce and a whole new team could well have problems.

  • 67 Dondatta13 // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:26 AM

Spurs have certainly spiced things up a bit thats for sure. Whether or not they break into the top five, its going to be fun watching.

The fees they are paying must surely add pressure on the manager/team before a ball is even kicked.

Can Ramos take the added individual talent and create a team that gel’s?

They also have wholesale changes across the team, how long before they settle in? … Personally I hope they go belly up! lol

  • 68 richie // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:34 AM

ye i envy spurs alri!bentley is a top player and the new beckham imo, might b even better in time, BUT they are spending alot money…on alot of players…it could go belly up , hope so! :P

  • 69 Dondatta13 // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:47 AM

Wow ritchie lol envy? thats a strong word there mate. I dont and never will envy the spuds lol

  • 70 51times // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:55 AM

Bentley is overrated, if he wasn’t English nobody would go on about him.

  • 71 AndyNUFC // Jul 31, 2008 at 1:02 AM

Well, 51 Times, considering this country is (apparently, doesn’t feel like it sometimes) England, i’m not surprised people go on about a future international winger who looks in the same sort of mould as the previous, arguably one of the most, if not the, famous footballer in the world. Still hate Spurs though.

  • 72 51times // Jul 31, 2008 at 1:05 AM

lol, England, I hope they never make another tournament again.

  • 73 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 31, 2008 at 1:17 AM

micepie – 65 thats what I mean! portsmouth where were they 4 years ago! they have invested right! buying 1 or 2 quality players every season with a few younger up and coming talent to add extra depth! we should take lessons from the likes of portsmouth!

  • 74 Ross G // Jul 31, 2008 at 1:30 AM

I think he is a good signing, but I must say I reckon it was partly arranged to appease N’Zogbia, they obviously get as u can see in the Pic on the official site on flight to Mallorca, lets hope they stay bum chums and start up an accord with the toon.

  • 75 Kaler // Jul 31, 2008 at 1:33 AM

So the spuds have spent a good chunk of their Keane money on Bentley. Wonder who they’ll spend their Berba money on, Ar$havin? I hope they do, coz with him and Bentley in instead of Keane and Berba I honestly can’t see where the goals are going to come from?? Bent? Don’t make me piddle.

  • 76 ObaFan2 // Jul 31, 2008 at 1:39 AM

Seems I logged onto a Spuds site by mistake?

  • 77 No Hands // Jul 31, 2008 at 1:41 AM

Kaler, I think they already had a bit to begin with. And they’ve sold others; Malbranque has joined the Scummers, Kaboul to Portsmouth etc.
It’s really not important though and certainly shouldn’t be any of our concern ( as long as they keep their dirty mitts off our future signings from now on!)

  • 78 No Hands // Jul 31, 2008 at 1:43 AM

Obafan2, I bet it made you feel dirty.

  • 79 Kaler // Jul 31, 2008 at 1:56 AM

    Obafan2,

Just discussing whats on my mind at this late, bored hour. It certainly isn’t our buzzing and exciting transfer window. Your sick of reading about spurs? Well so am I, but the sad fact is they’re a team that we shoule be competing with in the window and what they’re doing is of interest to me and I like to discuss it with other toon fans. When we start making signings and we’ve got something exciting of our own to talk about i’ll oblige. In fact I can’t wait for that, but for now theres dick all else to talk about. Apart from Barry staying at Villa. Be interesting to see how many boo him at their first game.

  • 80 ObaFan2 // Jul 31, 2008 at 1:58 AM

No Hands, tbh it’s boring reading through most of the comments today, alot anti Ash and loads of Spuds talk recently and to think we play these games Friday and Sunday and not much banter about that……

  • 81 ObaFan2 // Jul 31, 2008 at 2:00 AM

Kaler, I don’t care for them except another 6 points from them this season… end of in my book.

  • 82 Kaler // Jul 31, 2008 at 2:15 AM

Well lets hope its not a repeat of the Donny game.

  • 83 No Hands // Jul 31, 2008 at 2:20 AM

We’ll have plenty to talk about once the season starts and the speculation ends.

  • 84 DC Magpie // Jul 31, 2008 at 2:37 AM

domtoon you’ve got to take his comments in full. The guys sounds quite canny. Not the usual prepared statement. The guy was very honest, he said this isn’t his dream move (literally, like he never dreamt this before) but he then went on to say that “it is impossible to measure how motivated I am” and that he is desperate to play but willing to sit on the bench if that is what is asked. Hopefully he’s a friend of N’Zogbia and some of his attitude will rub off on him?

Oh, and SPURS! How nice is it gonna feel when Oba finally nets his hat-trick and we walk out big winners once again, god I love beating Spurs more than anyone. Is that wrong?

  • 85 DC Magpie // Jul 31, 2008 at 2:44 AM

    Sorry for the long post.

31 Jul 2008 — Depor Sport wrote on its Wednesday’s issue that Lendoiro’s demands to Newcastle for defender Coloccini are for €12.5 million plus objectives. So far, the Toons are only offering €11 million. Meanwhile, Momo has cancelled his contract with Deportivo, right now he’s waiting to arrange a deal with Xerez in order to announce his departure.

A lot has been written abut the possible departure of Fabricio Coloccini. It’s known that Newcastle United is offering €11 million plus an additional million for objectives. And now the demands of president Lendoiro have been revealed. Depor Sport, the official paper of the club, wrote on Wednesday that Depor’s president is asking for €12.5 million plus €1.5 million for objectives, in resume the transfer of the Argentinean has been valued in €14 million by Lendoiro.

Let’s stay positive people…doesn’t look to be much in it.

and can someone tell me why we haven’t yet signed Diego. He was whored out to all the big clubs and is desperate for a move. Be the best 20M we could spend. Collcini and Diego. Bring on the season!

And apparantly, we paid big bucks to Deportivo when we signed Albert Luque for 14 million. We do feed them well, dont we.

I think diego would be a great signing but seems like a long shot. How do you guys rate xabi alonso? He seems to be on the out at liverpoo and no other big clubs seem to be coming in for him.

i think we better try Diego first as alonso seems to be Spain-bound

  • 97 keltik // Jul 31, 2008 at 8:00 AM

oh great stuff, our biggest rivals Spurs are signing huge players like Modric & Bentley rumoured to be getting Arshavin and possibly Collocini and we sign Sebastian Bassong…

ive had enough, Mike Ashley obviously has no intention to spend any money at all the sooner we get rid of this joke running our club the better. Fair enough FFS caused us alot of problems but at least he wasnt scared to splash his cash.

by my account we would of signed players like Woodgate & Coloccini had FFS been incharge but it is blatantly obvious that Mike Ashley has no intention of denting his bank balance with any serious acquasition.

unless we make at least 3 MAJOR signings before the start of the season i refuse to go and watch my club play, and by major i dont mean these pointless signings like Bassong.

Does NO one wonder why we have recruited like 4 ‘high flying’ execuitves specifically for transfer dealings yet since we recruited these ‘Executives’ we have not made ONE major signing, i wouldnt even say Guitierez was a major signing.

we wont even be competing against teams like Stoke next season let alone Spurs.

  • 98 KEVIN BROCK & HIS SOCK // Jul 31, 2008 at 8:03 AM

Ashley is working to try and nick Arshavin from Spuds. He won’t be happy missing out to them on 3 signings i.e Modric, Woody and AA.

The agent is keeping his powder dry – trust me

  • 99 51times // Jul 31, 2008 at 8:20 AM

keltik – We ill need fans like you anyway, only willing to support their team during the good times.

  • 100 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 8:50 AM

I like Bassong’s attitude young and hungry and hope he does well.

We need senior players though, with flair and experience and this does not seem to be happening.

I don’t want to watch another season like last season it was painful and if we do not add depth and strength we will probably struggle.

Back Keegan and watch him perform miracles again.

  • 101 Magpie6699 // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:05 AM

Now Spurs have Bentley, where DOES that leave Lennon? Two -three seasons ago, he was terrific, pacy, tricky – remember him setting up a Robbie Keane goal at SJP. Seems to have lost confidence. Which manager that we know is a master at restoring confidence? Worth a punt?

  • 102 Aaron D // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:12 AM

theres still another month of the transfer window open, didnt sign Beye and Faye until the last day. But seriously need some major signings, top 10 at best with current squad. miles behind spurs, now and behind villa and pompey too.

  • 103 dicki // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:27 AM

yes theres still a month to go in transfer window but the problem is all the best players have been snapped up, we are left scrambling around for the few half decent players left

  • 104 maggpie // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:27 AM

How depressing! We get excited at an unknown French defender. Look at what Spurs are doing.
Bentley, Arshavin plus another £15m Russian.
Look at Pompey and their squad. Then Villa, Everton, Man City and even Blackburn and West Ham have better squads than us. Hell Sunderland may have.
We will be very lucky to finish in the top ten.
How did it all come to this? How have we been left behind by so many so called inferior clubs.
Years of financial mis-management and greedy drawing of undesrved salaries by the Shepherd’s and Hall’s. Years of managers making bad signings and that includes Sir Bobby (Viana, Robert and Bramble to name three, and there were others).
Now we have a southern owner with no real love, affinity or history with the club who just sees it as a fun day out in his striped shirt. He has no intention of spending on players in any real quantity. Look at the players that other clubs have effirtlessly snapped up, and look at us. An Argentinian winger who might be good, a young Liverpool player who wasn’t good anough for the Reds and was moderate at Bolton, and an unknown French defender who in all probability will prove to be no better than Scott, Peacock, Howey, Dabizas, O’Brien, Marcellino, Bramble, Ramage, Boumsong, Rozenhal, Cacapa….etc (what a depressing list of hopeless centre backs that is!).
Sorry to be so downbeat as I love this club, but the level we have sunk to since the mid to late nineties is quite depressing and I fear a season long relegation battle is ahead of us.

  • 105 benny // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:30 AM

  • 106 MMNUFC // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:30 AM

Robert a bad signing???!!!!!..multiple assits great goals and abit of flair…What did you want a hard working tracking back left winger who offers nothing going forward?…ooo yes we have one damien duff..think i have made my point

  • 107 faustino // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:34 AM

Keltic – that wasn’t Fat Fred’s money he was splashing you utter utter tool. That was our money at best or the banks at worst.

And in short, he ruined the club whilst racking up 200 odd millions worth of debt for zero return; as well as being party to some almost prison worthy dodgy goings on. Same goes for his son Kenneth.

This is Fred’s mess we’re dealing with here not Ashley’s. If you had 20 grand there’s no way you’d pour 2 grand down the drain. The same reason Ashley’s a little reluctant to pour the same ratio of money away until the club can attract the players that would be worth the cash.

We aren’t an attractive club this season. Allardyce f*cked it. No amount of money is going to attract Arsahvin or Moutinho etc. to the club. Get over it and support your club or do us all favour and leave.

And if your going to rant at least know what your talking about.

  • 108 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:36 AM

Alot can change in a week but the weeks seem to be flying by in this window..i still have some faith in ashley but the intent in the transfer window just seems to be lacking any fire or guts.

I remember at the end of the jan window staying up to watch SkySportNews hoping we would nail some players at the death and was gutted then to see no deals made.

Mike has been here quite a while now and we do seem more stable as a business..but we need to take some punts on bigger players than what we are signing..surely Mike knows we need players..not just for the future but for now.

Like i have said keegan needs to be backed and if he isn’t backed I can see him walking back to his soccer circus or whatever he is running.

This would set us back a long way as he is the only manager that fully understands the club, the fans, the passion and the people. Managers like Kev are few and far between so let’s not blow it and sign some players fans are happy to pay and watch as well as be entertained.

  • 109 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:43 AM

Benny I mentioned spurs sniffing at Collocini on the Owen thread and was torn to bits by tiptop and loonytoon and was told I knew fk all etc

I can really see him going to spurs his agent knows Ramos well and we have done all the donkey work again.

  • 110 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:47 AM

Faustino we have proven we can attract players look at coloccini terms have already been agreed but we can’t find another million quid.

He is well worth the money especially when you compare him to our current defence which is thin.

  • 111 Anon1 // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:47 AM

The signings will happen – I guarantee it. Collocini will join I reckon and I’ve heard that Baptista is very much on along with another couple of players that the club are keeping very close to their chest. The frustrating thing for fans is that no one from the club will speak out and let us know how things are going like Chris Mort used to. Keep the Faith – Bassong to Shine

  • 112 Martin // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:51 AM

    A couple of things…

    1) Just because this didn’t cost us £10m doesn’t mean it was a bad signing, if Boumsong is a current French International then on the basis of that 1 performance at Doncaster then this lad deffinately will be – for 1.5 it’s a clever bit of business

    2) Ed – did anything happen about those messages for Oba?

    3) Spurs are gambling heavily this season – as long as they don’t win anything and fail to qualify for Europe there’ll be a lot of squeek bums down in NL!

    4) Diego would be a very unlikely target IMO – he signed a new deal with Werder just last year (till 2011 I think though I may be wrong) and Real Madrid were linked heavily to him…Champions League football with Bundesliga contenders or Hull FC away with us? It’s sad but it’s true, without european football, we’ve got very little to offer!

  • 113 AndyT // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:52 AM

Makes a change to see a French player saying he is willing to knuckle down and prove himself to the gaffer (clearly he has already shown some of this as he’s impressed Kegan enough on trial to get the contract), knows it takes time to adapt to the premiership and is willing to get into the starting line-up based on performance rather than assuming some god given right to it.

With regard to the Collocini deal, as a matter of principal I want Ashley to tell Depor where to go on their price hikes, they owe us big time for the Luque deal which is Depors 4th highest transfer fee received of all time! However, for the sake of the team I want Ashley to fork out the extra(although he’s already gone from 10 to 11 to 12 Million Euros and is now being asked for 14). If the agent is any good hopefully he can broker a deal along the lines of €11.5M + €1.5M conditional. I think that would give everyone a compromise and a win from the current standoff.

Getting Collocini to buy out his contract at this point could be quite risky. Its well past the 15 days from the end of the season and the Webster ruling upheld the 2 week suspension the player received for being a couple of days outside the time window even though there was an argument that Hearts were playing in the cup final and so that should be taken as the end of the season, which would have put him inside the timeline. If FIFA were looking for a way to ensure that article 17 isn’t just used as built in minimum transfer clause, then I would expect them to slap a lenghty ban on him.

  • 114 WIGAZ // Jul 31, 2008 at 9:52 AM

I must agree that robert was not a bad signing like! if it wasn’t for that useless twat of a manager we had at the time he would of still been striking unbelivable goals & setting up big AL & Owen! he wanted to play for bobby not Souness! Who was a terrible decision at gaffer by the way! i would love it if we screwed spurs at last minute & nicked Arshavin! ha ha! but i just cant see it. we should hopfully wrap up collochini deal & then set our sights on diego as he’s younger than AA & is top draw!

faustino – well said, but in fairness FFS only racked up 80Million quid of debt. Still enough to land us in this mess, and you are right that what we are seeing today is the fact that the money Ashley had set aside and has pumped into Newcastle has had to be spent on paying off the previous boards spending instead of on players for today.

We were in a similar position, although this time we are already in the top league. He had no big name signings, managed to keep us up then get us promoted, winning the league and then challenging for the Prem title within a few seasons.
Big names came well after that, Shearer, Ferdinand etc….Even Ginola wasn’t a big name at the time of us buying him….much like Gutierrez, who is known as good player but not a big name, im pretty sure this lad will turn out to be a very exciting and good player for us.

it is not all doom and gloom but if you imagine the work that has gone in to get to this stage of the collocini deal to lose it over a 1m or whatever it is seems a shame..as well as paying high wages to wise and co with no end product i.e senior signings of quality.

  • 149 Stardust // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:41 AM

Ed I hate to say this as I used to enjoy reading the blog – but it has been turned into an anti newcastle rhetoric forum by morons – coming out with lies like “everyone I speak to is turning against Ashley” when that same man making those quotes has admitted to going to games and fighting before – I could go on and quote a 1000 other examples but its pointless nothing seems to change.

The blog is losing its way, not through your thought, ambitions or intentions, its not debate anymore, god knows who these people are but they are not newcastle fans, anything but, they are using the site to cause major disharmony that will damage the club in the long run.

Its the same people time and time again who seems to have major agendas, every day spouting more anti newcastle, or Anti Owner bile.

I love debate but it isnt debate or opinions, their perpetual posts are sinister.

I think the only way to go would be to control the debate within sensible parameters and to have register users and only allow registered ones to post, thereon you can revert to your current controls.

No one minds constructive criticism but this is going far beyond it. With your high News Now rating you have the ultimate responsibility to help Newcastle, I hope you can find a way through these difficult times.

We as fans have as much responsibility as the owner, manager and players to the club. The majority on here show that responsibility, its a shame that the minority are slowly subverting and corrupting by the very thing that was meant to be a great thing – your blog.

Ed I hate to say this as I used to enjoy reading the blog – but it has been turned into an anti newcastle rhetoric forum by morons – coming out with lies like “everyone I speak to is turning against Ashley” when that same man making those quotes has admitted to going to games and fighting before – I could go on and quote a 1000 other examples but its pointless nothing seems to change…. and by the way thank you for singling me out cheers for that…

  • 153 mozza // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:50 AM

aye,pal everythings alreet, cheers , am with hps on pompey and such, they take a risk and spend big, theyr’e linked with SWP and such, fullham, man city, spuds etc all willing to risk, trouble is on here people shoot you down sometimes for pointing these things out, they want you to act possitive so other fans dont come on and give you stick, well guess what, i couldn’t give a flying picket about a bit stick, truth is most of us are as worried as f**k, main reason for me when kk was hired he assured the press and the fans he could spend big question is does he seem that assured now? to top it of wor lass has got me decorating today and a f*****g hate it, so al prob only be on the blog every half an hour to see whats happening, think al just swallow the turps and get it over with ha ha

  • 154 Stardust // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:50 AM

Normski…….and you also have a responsibility to the club.

Opinions and debate based on fact and likely outcomes from current circumstance are great, but when they are not you lose the argument – you have not got a clue whats going on behind closed doors so anti Newcastle speculation based on zero knowledge is not an opinion at all.

Many of us hate reading the anti Newcastle bile on here every day, and the fall out it has when others all around the world, agents, players and press read this feeds their anti newcastle fire, and you whether you like it or not are culpable.

  • 155 normski1930z // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:52 AM

and by the way stardust i had about 20 friends down at donny and there was some major displeasure amongst the away end fans…

  • 156 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:52 AM

    Stardust..Stop reading the blog Simple.

A blog is a place for opinion and some we agree with some you don’t.

just because someone had a fight at a football game
that does not mean they should be banned from posting.
It is people like you that have this country in a crippled politically correct mess.

  • 157 normski1930z // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:56 AM

here here jas there seems to be alot of ppl on here who always have to be 100% positive all the time when anyone can see things (in the transfer window) are not going well at all….

  • 158 AndyT // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:57 AM

Stardust – Get off your high horse. There are plenty of us on here that are surportive of what is happening at the club (even if we would still like to see big talent being brought in) and if you spend some time arguing with (err… I mean talking to!) the likes of HPS, Normski Daiv etc, you’ll see that they have just as much passion for the club and what comes out on here is from frustration and a desire to see the club doing well. They are entitled to their opinion on how that should be acheived as much as anyone else.

  • 159 mozza // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:57 AM

cheers stardust, point proven, aint allowed to voice your opinions, and ever heard of people reforming, never mentioned he’s a staunch family man now who worships his wife and kid did ya

  • 160 Dondatta13 // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:59 AM

Stardust, We the supporters have been behind NUFC through thin and thinner times. NUFC need to give us supporters something to be positive about.

Surely you cant be happy at the size of our squad? WE HAVE THE SMALLEST SQUAD IN THE LEAGUE BRO.

  • 161 Stardust // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:01 AM

Sir Jason – I love debate – as for politically correct – LOL – re read above and think – if you cant understand then I prove my point about the quality of some of the posters.

Not once did I say not to voice opinions, not once did I say to stifle debate, all I say is we all have a responsibility to NUFC to keep it informed, objective and based on fact not rhetoric, lies, trashpaper headlines or anything else.

And when that Rhetoric is spouted every ten minutes of every day by the same people and when those comments are simply that – rhetoric — it no longer makes the blog an entertaining need – but feeds the fire or the Anti Newcastle brigade.

  • 162 bowburnmag // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:04 AM

Stardust and normski – I’d suggest the truth is somewhere in-between both of your arguments.

  • 163 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:10 AM

This is a blog Stardust and we can’t expect everyone on here to have a degree in english language, that is the beauty of it and that is what keeps it interesting and fresh.

To come on here and mention the “quality” of peoples postings just seems very rude to me.

Nobody forces you to come on here and if people want to express opinions then they should be allowed to do that.

  • 164 Dondatta13 // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:10 AM

Stardust, again you talk about OUR responsibilities towards NUFC, what about their responsibility towards us? the paying public?

We currently have strikers who dont score (Smith, Ameobi), we have a recruitment team that dont recruit (Wise & Co) and a BILLIONAIRE who doesnt spend.

All the while we have Spurs (who finished one spot above us last term) signing players we very much would like.

If you are happy about this and the only thing that bugs you are some supposed anti NUFC posts on a blog, then you need serious help my friend!

  • 165 normski1930z // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:11 AM

so stardust calling ppl a moron thats ok then is it?????

  • 166 Stardust // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:14 AM

Andy T, I agree, aint on a high horse its the 10 minute posts by the same people spouting rubbish and newspaper headlines reshaped as facts.

When passion is misdirected it has a destructive effect – an absolute fact.

They ruin the very thing they care about (although as we know many posters are not Newcastle fans). Thats what I meant by they have a responsibility to think before they act – Normski – I gave you as an example as when you had your kid you saw life in a different way – think how it would be if you and those of the same thought kept going, agents, players and press reading NewsNow headlines – it will stop players coming as we will have a negative reputation. Now how think of how it would be if you were constructive in you criticsm or more objective – we can all do our tiny part to improve the club or the perception of the club and that includes you Normski and every other genuine Newcastle fan (whilst still disagreeing – after all its only by disagreement and argument that things change for the better)

I am as nervous as the next man about whats happening, I am as curious and impatient as the next for signings, but as we have seen the blog is being overran recently.

I am opening the debate and hopefully some minds as to the consequence of their posts.

As for the word moron – I did say I wasnt PC lol.

  • 167 mozza // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:21 AM

av gota get on with this decorating, final word for a bit, so every toon fan has to be an articuate, objective debator that never spews their true feelings on a post when theyr’e angry at the things that are going on or a lack of them at their beloved club, which they have grafted their nuts of for just to buy a season ticket, dont think so, it would be boring as f**k if none of us kicked up a storm every now and then, of to do the painting, norm, laters pal

Ho’way lads, both sides have a point!..
…But, it would be cool if everyone resisted the temptation to slag each other, it only gets everyones back up!..
…Stardust makes good points & the lads on the other side are genuinely worried about stuff…But, we must stay positive & patient…Otherwise we’ll just let our imaginations run away with us & that’s just the sort of unrest that the press love!..

    …Ho’way the Lads!..

  • 170 bowburnmag // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:26 AM

If I’m being totally honest, part of the problem I’m seeing at the minute is a lack of a sense of humour. We’ve put up with a lot of cr*p in the past. From the media, in terms of cr*p on the pitch etc. Being a Newcastle supporter pre-Premier League gives you a decent grounding for expectations. There have been some pretty bleak days for me before Keegan came to manage first time round. I just think with some of the younger lads, it’s harder to accept. Even if they’ve had to put up with the Dalglishes, Gullites, Sounesses etc. They were more like temporary blips in amongst some good years with Keegan and Robson. Either way, we seem to have lost the art of self-deprication and our sense of black humour which was synonymous with being a Mag. And perhaps for the older lads we’ve just had it ground out of us with this last lot of cr*p? Or is it the rising cost of the comedy show that currently tickles our fancy that’s as much to do with causing the frustration? Pay a lot, expect a lot?…….

Normski, i know it’s tough goin’ at the moment, but keep ya’ pecker up bro’…It’s a pain in the ass that we can’t do owt about signings etc…But we gotta try not to get down about it…It has been a hell of a lot worse in the past, i’m sure you remember the 80’s, ouch!..I know i do, now that sucked big dogs…

Now that’s what i’m talkin’ about!..
…It’s dull as man, but, let’s see what KK can do with whatever he ends up with at the season start…At least he’s settled in & we did start to kick some butt towards the end of last season & his plan started to work…No-one was expecting him back, or him goin’ 433 at brum…We gotta keep our faith in him & sod what else gets said…It’s the football that really counts, after all, for most of us anyway!..
…KK actually made last seasons squad look good at times, prob ‘cos it is really & he knows how to make it kick!..Know warra mean?..

  • 176 keltik // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:16 PM

Faustino, please leave the personal slurs out of this and have an educated debate with me, i can call you a muppet all i want aswell but personel name calling achieves nothing in the land of adults, but i suppose your probably still trying to pass your GCSEs, but i digress.

I understand where the money came from, the point is Freddy took risks. Its a catch 22 either you dont buy anyone and save the cash (which is what we are doing at the moment) and then you slip ever farther down the pecking order until you are relegated and then you have masive deficits from the running costs of a premier league club recieiving division 1 income, or you splash the cash and compete in the transfer market and make audacious bids for players, at the very least you maintain your position in the Prem and then the money you expended on players is recouped through Premier league income.

the days of record signings for Newcastle seem to be well and truly over, as i said before and a few people agree we seem to be scraping the barrel, at this rate we will be lucky to compete with Stoke next season let alone Spurs or Villa.

And to the person who said ‘i only support when we are doing well’ you completely mis-understood my post i did not say i would not support them i meant i would not pay money to go and watch my team when the money doesnt seem to be going anywhere.

i mean for instance, the past two seasons since MA bought us we have recived over £100 million from the premier league… all the other clubs seem to be spending this money apart from us.

Faustino do you not realise that we have not spent a PENNY since Mike Ashley took over? last season we sold more than we bought, this season its estimated we are £2million up since selling Emre & Rozey.

all im saying is Mike Ashley obviously has no intention what so ever to spend money on our club, this is a cold hard fact, that is all im saying.

So please faustino, please debate me like an educated adult if you dont agree with my opinions.

Also, Ashley doesnt even seem to want to keep Owen, or to offer Oba a new contarct to get out the stupid ‘minimum release fee clause’.

so he doesnt seem to have any impoteous to keep our amazing players aswell as having no desire to sign any amazing players.

and you say FFS messed our club up? Ashley may be getting our finances in good shape but what use are good finances in the lower divisions?….answers on a postcard please.

  • 177 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 12:58 PM

    Good post Keltic.

  • 178 AndyT // Jul 31, 2008 at 4:09 PM

keltik – last season we spent a small amount more than we bought about 6 million – peanuts in the grans scale of things – so far this season its about zero, which will obviously change if we get Collocini. The biggest problem we have is the size of our current wage bill. We know the squad is not massive, and yet we have the highest wage bill outside of the top 4. The only other team in the Premiership that has a smallish squad and that kind of wage bill is Chelsea. The fact that we are offering Collocini a £35,000 (€50,000) per week contract, which is doubling his wages, but would put him on the same as Milner, Taylor and NZogbia and some way behind the likes of Duff, Smith, Barton, Viduka. Basically while those other teams have had acouple of years getting a big paycheck on the TV money and are now spending it on players, we already spent ours on paying the players we had. Not only that but the fact that the banks were in a mess when the club was de-listed, they called in the debt. So the club has already spent the money from increased TV revenues on player wages and have had to spend the cash that was put into the club on repaying debt. If you take Barton, Duff, Owen, Viduka and Butt, thats about £300,000 per week. most teams outside the top 4 will be paying about that for there top 10 players! basically if we are paying about 200k a week more for our squads wages, thats roughly 10 Million a year less to spend on transfers. Now consider we’ve been running the squad like for a few years and in the years before that we were spending more than we had on players.

  • 179 keltik // Jul 31, 2008 at 4:39 PM

Andy T – you make alot of sense, i guess im just freaking out because as things stand we are going to struggle in the new season, as i said before we only have 2 strikers because Vidukas never fit and suprise, suprise i just saw a new story on BBC saying that viduka is ruled out of the beggining of the season.

I guess im just very frustrated, you look at the overview of clubs on BBC or Sky Sports and every club has postiive stories about signing all sorts of players, you look at Newcastle and the stories are about Obas mum dying, Barton released from Jail, Barton charged by the FA and Vidukas injured…. its very soul destroying.

my other main reason for getting frustrated is that our non-transfer activity is becoming a trend, this is the 3rd transfer window in a row that we have done next to nothing.

  • 180 AndyT // Jul 31, 2008 at 5:32 PM

    Hey Keltic,
I agree about the current news its depressing, I think its compounded for everyone because of last season.
I honestly think that if last season we had done a west ham and been 10th for the entire season, we’d all be complaining that those above us were pulling away, but I doubt there would be so much panic about relegation etc.
I think that last year the squad that we have and the quality we have in it, greatly underperformed. Personally I think one of the big contributors to that was a lack of stability. First a change of manager, immediately followed by a change of ownership, imediately followed by a more than 50% change in the first team players, coupled with BSA’s policy of rotating the players, coupled with a complete overhaul of the training, followed by a period with no manager, then a new manager coming in to a team with no confidence whatsoever while at the same time a new team was being put together to handle player contracts.
This season you just dont have the same turmoil going on around the players. Emre is the only player that has left that was even close to holding down a first team place. Guiterez the only player who will probably stroll into the first team and nail it down. Guthrie might just do it because he has pace which we curently lack in central midfield. I think without spending we wont make top 8, but we would be top 12. There is no way our current squad is worse in either strength or depth than those of Hull, WBA, Stoke, Fulham or Wigan, even if we do need to draft in the likes of Lua Lua, Caroll, Tozer and other youngsters that we have.
