Setanta Sports is reporting that the agent of Fabricio Coloccini has told Newcastle they will have to look elsewhere for a new defender.

Fabricio Coloccini - whoops - sorry I kicked you in the head Lionel (Messi)
His agent, Marcello Lombilla, who is somewhat outspoken to say the least, is claiming the Deportivo La Coruna star is another example of slavery in football (oh well - we suppose he’s doing his best to get the transfer through).
Newcastle United have had a very good bid rejected for the Argentine international, who is desperate to make the move to Tyneside, where he will at least double his current wages.
Deportivo’s President Augusto Cesar Lendoiro is being a little greedy in trying to get at least a €12M (around £9.6M) fee for the player and Marcello Lombilla believes it could scuttle the transfer. Newcastle have already offered £1M below that figure, but are said to not be budging on that figure.
Lombilla told El Ideal Gallego:
“I spoke to the directors of Newcastle to explain to them and told them that they should look for another player because I know what their limit is and I know they can’t afford the money Lendoiro is asking for.”
Lombilla continued with an attack on the Deportivo President, using the comments of Cristiano Ronaldo earlier this summer by accusing Lendoiro of slavery.
“Three years ago he promised us that if there was an offer of €10M for Coloccini, the player would be able to go,”
“Last summer he didn’t let him go to Zaragoza and now that we have a major offer, it’s the same.”
“Slavery was abolished years ago. Will Lendoiro have the conscience to be able to sleep easy after ruining the career of a player?â€
You can’t say Fabricio’s agent isn’t doing all he can to get the transfer through, which of course would be good for his client, good for Newcastle and very good for himself.
We still think that Newcastle are in with a good chance of getting the player - and hope that doesn’t put a bad spell on the deal.
Comments welcome.

Dont mind too much, dont think we were after him because we signed Bassong. His agent was too blunt, he just wanted a better deal for his player, too much about money.
Now the new Nesta will get more of a chance

dont know whats going on with this transfer, is it done? Are they still trying? Is it out of the question?
4 Taiwantoon // Jul 30, 2008 at 12:35
We would absolutely hate his agent if this guy was representing one of our players.
I think Depor is greedy, but it’s also hard for me to decline the fact that the agent has gone too far with his comments.
5 gorskino10 // Jul 30, 2008 at 12:37
Kader won’t get ahead of taylor or feye. Let’s hope he buys his contract as that will be a laughing matter for there president saying be lost him for half newcastle offered.
6 Linktoon // Jul 30, 2008 at 12:38
just because we’ve signed bassong doesnt mean we wont get another CB, wud a 1.5 mil metz player really be the solution we need for our useless defence? personally i think he is a better prospect than taylor and faye but if we got collocini aswell i reall think we may have sorted our back fur after all these decades
7 Peter // Jul 30, 2008 at 12:40
I think the agent is an overacting type who is making it seem like more than it is just so he can complain and get Newcastle to cough up more money.
8 ToonKing // Jul 30, 2008 at 12:40
feck this……they can’t afford it ?? i know what their limit is ?? we can’t pay 10M for a player ?? i’m frustrated in som many ways right now……..
Does Newcasstle United not have 10M for a player any more ?? a club that was setting the transfer record of the world not so long ago………
Does Deportivo president and board have any sense at all ??? what do they have to gain by not letting Collocini go ?? he will just get angry and maybe refuse to play and buy he’s contract out…….
insane, and all this over a lousy million…….
i officially lost all hope………….

This is rather annoying, hes a great player and him and faye would be flipping amazing together! CAN WE HAVE CENTRAL MIDFIELDER NOW PLEASE!
10 toonyloon // Jul 30, 2008 at 12:42
I think this is just a ploy by the agent to tell Deportivo to accept the offer. He’s trying to make out that they [Deportivo] won’t get another deal as good as ours.
I still think the transfer will go through..
SO DON’T PANIC
11 Michael // Jul 30, 2008 at 12:42
Tom Toon, I doubt very much that Bassong has been signed instead of a player like Coloccini.
This is just a tactic from the agent to try and force Deportivo’s hand.

Surely if he’s so desperate to move, he will buy out his contract??
i really hope this move still happens, he’s a much better player than any of our defenders.
Off-topic, i still feel we need a creative midfielder, but all of the current emphasis is on the defence. Now this may be neccessary, but we still don’t have much creativity in the middle.

I’m sick in the stomach of footballers being compared to slaves. Situations can be difficult nad in some cases career changing, but slaves? Don’t these people actually know anything about slavery historical or current. If only they knew the horrors they’d keep their gobs shut.
On a footballing note I think the transfer will go through, probably a buy-out, followed by a court case.
Anyway I’m off to buy someone to make me lunch…

Setanta TV are spouting crap in my opinion.
24 Matt // Jul 30, 2008 at 13:01
His agent sounds like a muppet. I still think the deal will go through one way or another.
It’s not a case of Newcastle not being able to afford him it’s them putting a limit on the level of talent they’re willing to aquire for over 10m which is just good sense. You don’t buy someone for more money than they’re worth. Unless you’re Sunderland.
25 Barry Cock // Jul 30, 2008 at 13:05

28 Ericles // Jul 30, 2008 at 13:09
The deal may still go through. The stench of greed reeks all over this so-called transfer. I do
not see this so-called recruitment team achieving anything. It is obvious that Ashley and his crew are completely at sea in the football world. It seems that way anyway. When do we hear Metz have pulled out too? Why cannot KK, Cox, Hughton and Co go out and get what we need? KK is a shrewd man in a deal and
would not blow cash on shite! We are in need of horses for courses - just because Ashley sells some football boots it does not mean he is a soccer management maestro.
29 MAG PIE // Jul 30, 2008 at 13:09
Get the feeling the Bassong deal not yet announced because it’s either him or Coloccini and the Toon are giving Colo one last effort.

sirjasontoon………pay the extra million? What like in Shepherd’s day when it wasn’t his money but the banks? There comes a point when we have to be realistic. The papers are saying the president accepted our bid - then the next day upped it by 2 million Euros (so £1.25 million).
If say you go to buy a car for £1,000, agree the price, then the seller says it’s 1,500 do you just pay the cash and move on?? I doubt it.It’s a game which is being played out in the open. I’m sure this sort of posturing goes on all the time. The buying team have just got to keep their nerve and I’m sure we’ll get our man.

46 Paul141726 // Jul 30, 2008 at 13:17
I believe this is not only hard ball by Depo, but also the agent. Saying we should look elsewhere is almost forcing our hand to increase our offer.
It also brings other teams into possibly coming in for him, thus creating a little bidding competition (as in Spurs—arghhhh). As lots of people have said before, don’t believe we have signed a player until he is at St. James’ and has just put pen to paper.
47 Kaler // Jul 30, 2008 at 13:17
For christs sake this has got me so angry, greedy knob. Coloccini would be an immense signing for us, I just pray that another team doesn’t read his agents comments (and lets face it, he knows what hes doing by shouting the situation from the heavens) and step in with a little extra cash and we lose out on a quality player who is exactly what we need.
I’m not saying pay the terrorist what he wants, but maybe try and meet him half way but be clear that its the final straw, either that or get the ball rolling with Coloccini buying out his contract and give him a handsome signing on fee.

Good on Newcastle. He is a good player, but we should not be paying over the odd’s just cos a club sees us as a soft touch. We’ve done it in the past and where has it got us. All the best players we have had have been bought for what they were worth or less. Even Shearers market value was around £15mill as that is what other clubs were offering to pay. All the players where we’ve paid more than the market rate just to get someone that no one else is interested in have been flops. This might hurt (a little) in the short term, but by showing that the new regime are not a soft touch we will gain from it in the long term.

55 Spyro // Jul 30, 2008 at 13:27

Seriously this is getting out of hand – I’m gutted, that said, if the shoe was on the other foot, and it was a Newcastle player wanting away, I’d be furious… Yes, the Chairman is greedy money grabbing so so, but at the end of the day, if he feels he values his player at a higher price then the offer, well he’s quite within his rights to do so. What worried me more was the statement ‘I’m aware of Newcastle limit, and what they can’t afford’. That’s the bigger worry!
As much as I dislike Spurs, you’ve got to admit they are aiming big, signed DB and talks are at an advanced stage for Arshvin…

64 Micky Toon // Jul 30, 2008 at 13:36
The agent has suggested they play might do a webster, so it’s not like they agent is holding out for cash. Don’t the agent’s get paid by the players anyway? So if the player buys out his contract then he will still be paying his agent, except it will come out of his own pocket rather than via a signing on fee and then out of his own pocket, if you see what I mean.
Also why all the sudden obsession with Spurs? You lot are idiots if you think Spurs are just waiting for us to announce a player is signing before jumping in with another offer. They really do have better things to do at the moment. Leave it with the spurs talk, will you? It only attracts flies to the blog.
Gazza at the toon again? Where did this come from? Gazza is a waste of air. A top, top player who threw it all away on drugs and drink. He’s a proper mentalist that needs to be looked after. Read his book if you need convincing. Has NUFC become a drop in centre for the deranged? We’ve just got rid of a couple of mentalists in Dyer and Bowyer and now we have Barton and GAZZA? Just were was this published because I don’t believe it?

Think nufc should walk away. Why - (1) the guy has no EPL experience and therefore is unlikely to adjust and contribute this season (especially with no pre season training), (2) if we cave in then it will happen with every future transfer, (3) we should be looking at the players Deportivo were thinking to buy as a replacement.
The only CBs who would immediately improve our team this season must already have EPL experience - so thats Woody (who I don’t think we seriously went for) or the Chelsea guy joining ManCity for 60K per week. Anything else we are better off with youth and bed them in gradually.
83 Obafan // Jul 30, 2008 at 13:52
Back to the past: Remember Aimar, Modric, … We won’t get him, it all takes ages if NUFC want to try to get a quality player.
I do think NUFC handled right by saying this is our final offer, cause they know that the Depor chairman is a greedy knob. He wants more and more and more.
Let’s look elsewhere to find a quality CB. If Coloccini buys out his own contract to come to us then okay, but NUFC is not a club which other clubs can play with if it comes to money for transfers.

I agree with the clubs datnce of not paying more than they think a player is worth. anyone remember the last time we bought a player from deportivo yes a mr luque for 10million they couldnt sell him us quick enough and what awaste that was. i too am frustrated with the lack of quality signings or big names but look at portsmouth they buy young and unknown players without spending a fortune look were they finished last season. Im just surprised that we cant get rid of smith or ameobi nearly 110.000 a week in wages and a possibility of 10 million in fees just imagine the quality of player we could buy and even offer a good wage to boot
93 robertsa // Jul 30, 2008 at 14:00

94 Cooper // Jul 30, 2008 at 14:00
At the end of the day coll has been left out of the pre season squad etc so surely this should indicate that we are getting somewhere and the chairman is at least willing to sell
95 TTOON // Jul 30, 2008 at 14:00
What is happening to the Toon. He is rated one of the best CB in the world. Either ask him to intiate article 17 or pay more for him. That Bassong is alright nothing that special will fulfill a role. The thing is that we have too many average players. It’s alright buying these kind of players but we actually need some proven world class players.
Example Fulham - Just for the strike force they have signed zamora, johnson and probably will sign Gomez.
96 harrier // Jul 30, 2008 at 14:01
Let’s be honest - The agent first says he is furious cause the chairman rejected our offer - then he threatens a webster - then tells them to double his wages or let him leave -then tells us to go look elsewhere cause we are skint and are on a timeline - hmmm do these threats not seem like tactics so that the chairman accepts our offer?
97 jeff // Jul 30, 2008 at 14:01
The main issue here is the deportivo chairman changing his mind about the fee….You name a price and stick to it….Yes he’s a greedy git, just cos the toon have a billionaire chairman doesnt mean he can up his original price…..I still think Coloccini will be a toon player before the start of the season……..But I agree with most people, lets get a good midfielder in….In my view if Nzogbia actually wants to stay then he should be our attacking midfielder…Give him the freedom of the pitch and encourage him and he’ll be class for us….To me what we need is a damn good play maker…Some one to be good on the ball and have a eye for a great pass……

HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES - I agree! How deep are MA pockets or indeed does he have any pockets…?
It is a hard one, on the one hand you have the guy that I believe is GOD, Keegan saying, Quality signings will arrive before the end of the transfer window, but I’m sure Keegan said the same thing back in Jan….I don’t doubt Keegan one bit, I’m just worried he’ll walk if not given the support he was promised..! Back in Jan he said we had a small, very small squad and although it was made up of pure quality it needed adding to – ok, now we’re in August, and we’ve lost 4 players from the squad, with Ameobi sure to leave, we’ve brought in two…Do the math..?
It’s obvious something is not quite right at the club….What is it is anyone’s guess!

Magpie. I don’t see why we shouldn’t sign both Bassong and Coloccini (though assuming we’ve signed Bassong – as reported – we may relax our efforts over Coloccini more, or hold out with our current offer because we are less rushed).
KK wants defenders who can cover at fb and Coloccini can also cover at rb (say, if Beye is injured otherwise Coloccini would be playing at cb), Bassong at lb. Because KK said we mostly need cover at rb and lb, he clearly isn’t looking at Geremi as rb cover.
I hope we don’t now turn to Ferdinand. I’d still get my support behind any decision though, whatever it is.
By the way, if we offered an extra million for Coloccini then we’d be regarded as paying 1M over the odds, but Liverpool have just paid around 12M over-the-odds for Keane!
116 AndyT // Jul 30, 2008 at 14:17
Right, so if I’ve got it right the agent is claiming that:
He had an indication from Depor that they would accept a bid in the region of €10Million.
Three months ago we made an initial bid of €8 Million.
He go us to go up to €10Million and then took the offer to Depor in the last few weeks.
Depor said find another €1Million, he cam back and haggled with us a bit, and got the extra €1Million.
Now Depor have said, find another €1Million and pay the lot up front not in installments.
I know Ashley did it once on the Dyer deal, but upping the price having that met, then upping it again and changing the payment schedule.
Its one thing to say fork out the extra million, looks like that was the deal and we went for it, but when do you stop forking out extra millions if each time you do it, the price just goes up again?

I dont know about long hair and gay, what about right said fred??
We need to spend on this player, we must have quality.
Sunderland got a bargain with Diouf £2.5m!! Bit of a pain but a very good player. We should have bought Diouf and Cisse they are both looking very cheap in the transfer market this year, Ashley has committed himself and the club to low spending without looking at the current market price, now he is looking like a bit of a prick, next season if we pick up an injury or two so will we!!
Cant see us having the sense to go for Bullard either, and pay enough to land him.
The market dictates the price and the prices are high so we have to pay, just buy one defender instead of two, but at least buy a good one.

HPS got to agree but some people support the owners as much as the club no matter what.
John Hall and his mates fired Bobby Robson and fat Freddy was left to do the deed, I hate John Hall for that no matter what he did before, he ruined our best ever chance of breaking in to the top three, I seriously think it is because Freddy would have gone down in the history books as the chairman who brought silverware.
But say anything against John hall on here and there is always someone……
Same with Ashley.

Ian you werent - you always spout pro Shepherd stuff- like only last week campaigning for him to be brought back (he is only worth 40mill - nothing in todays world)
Hence our assumption that you are either one of them or closely linked.
Ashley knows that if Webster is exploited to the max over the coming years and becomes as in vogue as Bosman, clubs like Spurs and Man City will go bust as big transfers in are no longer balanced by big transfers out.
Not that you’d know anything about that, your dad FF just took money out, and FFS dont say he spent big, we are still burdened with unpaid for players - they were simply headlines to allow the egg timer to be turned over to stop the sand running out.
Dividends were paid, warehouses rented and money stolen from the fans who invested their lives and what little cash they had in the club.

We need anyone to step forward and buy at least a share of the club to get things moving or we are going to have a very tough season.
176 Lawman // Jul 30, 2008 at 17:12
What’s all the crap earlier about exercising a clause in his contract allowing him to buy out his own contract? How come he’s not doing that if it is possible???? If he decides to buy out his own contract then Depor will have no way of keeping him.
Also, I’m a little worried if the agent knows our budget and cannot afford a player costing anything more than £9m. How can we compete when spurs are forking out £16.5m for modric and £18m for Bentley (albeit with revenue from Keano’s sale) and the reported chase for Pavlyuchenko and Arshavin????
Even Fulham just signed Johnson for £12m for god’s sake!!!!! FULHAM????? £12mil????? and we’re struggling with £9m?
Nevermind the top4 - we can double our budget to £18m per player and still won’t be able to compete (Scouser’s just spent £20m on Keano). Top 10 would be a great achievement!
Beginning to think Sir Les was right! Scary times!

“I seriously think it is because Freddy would have gone down in the history books as the chairman who brought silverware.”
I maybe was confused or stupid or misreading that you were trying to say good things about FF (I suggest everyone else did too)
So as for me being FF obssessed - I wont fail to counter anyone who has a good opinion of him - even if like you they are his SON.
Agreed Toonpipes - its easy to spend £1 million of someone elses money by simply saying - “just pay the money”. I love the fact the club is being ran as it is - I am nervous about signings - but I truly believe we are in great hands from top to bottom, thats my opinion and till its proved otherwise - I am sticking to it.
178 Ian // Jul 30, 2008 at 17:19
Lawman agree, was Johnson not £13m? Keane just over £20m, it is clear the prices are high this year unless the players have popularity problems, trouble is we already have Barton and looking at the players we could have afforded we would end up like the Dirty Dozen.
We either need the players or we dont, if we do then we have to pay the going rate there is no avoiding it, to pay less would be no improvement.
179 dan // Jul 30, 2008 at 17:25
I think we will still get him. The player has been offered twice the salary and a league he wants to play in.
After what that Deportivo chairman did to us for Luque and now this I would like to see the clause activated. Surly this would be the best way even if the club then reimbursed him. That way the dodgy chairman will get less money and there is nothing he can legally do.
We will also get a bit of compensation for the utterly useless Luque.
Do people agree on this?
180 Ian // Jul 30, 2008 at 17:29
Stardust once and for all, I rate Bobby Robson as one of the all time best football managers ever, we were FIFTH in the premiership and we had a good team.
Hall got rid of Robson, Freddy happened to be the chairman and had to do the deed even though he disagreed, I cant help it that the man you hate Freddy was the chairman it was a PLC at the time it didnt matter how much Freddy was worth they only owned shares, no amount of you arguing about any old crap will change it, it was history.
The bottom line is we dont seem to have the money to buy players who are quality, even lower priced defenders never mind a top striker.

It’s funny how everyones taking their frustration out on Ashley again. Deportivo are holding us to ransom FFS. Why the f*ck should he pay another million. He met thier asking price and they asked for more. Now they want €3m more than Collocini’s agent was first told.
Ashley is not the one who should be taking the bullets. He’s supplying the funds, it’s twats like the deportivo chairman that’s to blame. Give your heads a shake all you Ashley knockers.

You are like a serpent who only comes out when they smell the chance to cause trouble for Ashley - and this Coloccini deal is perfect for you - how did we win the war with characters like you in the country.

I am getting sick of Ashley, you buy a premiership club and then the business has to pay premiership prices, he should have bought up enough shares for him to gain control without knocking out all of the other shareholders if he couldnt afford the prices, there were many small shareholders already, after knocking the small shareholder out he wants them back in, meantime the football club suffers.
If we get an injury with the wrong player or two we could be facing relegation unless the squad is strengthened, we only played one game per week for much of the second part of the se
