The English Football Association has charged Joey Barton with misconduct, and it has forced the Newcastle club to issue a formal statement on the matter.
The full Newcastle statement is as follows:
NEWCASTLE United can confirm that it has received documentation from the Football Association stating that it is charging Joey Barton with misconduct in relation to the incident that occurred with Ousmane Dabo in May 2007, at a time when he was a registered player of Manchester City.
The Club has sought clarification from the Football Association as to why this decision has been reached now, given the incident occurred nearly 15 months ago.
Joey will be requesting a personal hearing in relation to the charge and the Club will be making no further comment on the matter at this time.
The reason the FA have only brought the charge now would appear an easy one – he’s only recently been convicted and given a four months suspended sentence.
But how long is this thing going to drag on, and continually give the Newcastle club very bad publicity like this?
Comments welcome.

And if you want to trash talk the country then go overseas. You’ll find the average British yob is far worse than the likes of Barton. You may find you end up giving one of them a “good Klap” yourself… I know I would.

Comment #122Just heard from a mate on vacation in Spain that the press there is full of news that apparently Newcastle, City and Tottenham are having a bidding war over Sevilla’s Jesus Navas.
now, he is a very good player, but do we need another winger ?? i think not….

Comment #123ToonKing – As someone that loves Sevilla as much as the toon i have to say Navas would be an AMAZING SIGNING. So frighteningly quick and great crosser of the ball. The reason Sevilla always do so well is because they have Navas on the right and the electric Diego Capel on the left. But both players would rather play for Ramos than us

Comment #125i think that keegan and wise ae workin hard on players, they are keeping them secret to keep the targets secret, there is more money at the club than people think, but keegan and wise realise what kind of signings have been made in the past and realise that there is still another month left of the transfer window so are wisely not rushing into anything
i feel that we shud bid for…
moutinho
manual fernandes
albelda
saviola
coloccini
ayala
hitzelberger
i think that this will never happen but i would like any of these players, good balence of experience and youth (apart from ayala and albelda with the youth lol) but i would like these signings and feel that they could add to the team, so wisey if your on here lol

Comment #129I am totally disillusioned with it all now.
KK has gone way way down in my estimation. The FA (finally) and Nike are doing Keegan’s and Ashley’s job for them.
If you look the other way over Barton, you don’t belong in civilised society.
If it is a punishment for not sacking Barton, then for once in my life I am absolutely 100% behind theFA.
74 days is nothing for 3 offences alone in the last 15 months.
It’s not about Barton’s over rated ability (he’s no gerrard or fabregas) or whether we have enough players. Barton probably stops players coming anyway and is a shocking role model to our youngsters.
Barton is a pathalogical menace. What would you say if he had put a cigar in one of our kid’s faces or repeatedly whacked him while lying out in the street.
Barton has not shown one ounce of remorse, accepted a salary cut or anything. This is a guy who we had to pay an extra 300k as a signing off fee from city after we’d paid a signing on fee as well! Great work Allardyce. I didn’t think we could get anyone worse than Souness.
Barton will always be bad news.
On another note, surely to god, we could have got Deriyok, Inler,
Larrson and Insua by now and introduced the likes of Krul, Kadar and Lua Lua in to the squad

Comment #130The talk is barton could be banned for 15 games! what a joke! this whole thing is getting out of control, the FA did FA when he was dragging our name through the mud & know he’s back & available they want to ban him! we need another mid now like big time coz if that ban comes in we’re screwed!

Comment #131Nick Barton has served his time like I have said I don’t condone his actions but he is not a killer, rapist etc he had a couple of fights..dennis wise has commited a worse offence than Joey.
Let’s move on.

Comment #132Many good points from BenjiToon and sirjasontoon. This Barton saga is becoming a media and FA witch hunt. How about sending papers to Man City? Barton was their player then. Simple – ban him from playing for Man city ever again.

Comment #133I’ve said enough about this already but Chris F you added a different perspective and also I’ve not heard anyone say “do me a favour” in that context since the early ’90s. Nostalgic.

Comment #134Didnt Duncan Ferguson serve 3 months in prison and get something like a 7 match ban(which he didnt have to serve as he moved to the EPL)? 15 seems a bit of a joke.

Comment #135They can’t ban Barton, it would violate the double jeopardy law. He served his time, he can’t be punished again for the same crime.

Comment #137im a trainee in the legal trade and this is a stupid move by the FA, i feel for barton and hes served his time for his crime.
theres likely to be a backlash from newcastle /barton legal team as this is purely dragging barton tru the mud after he served his sentence for the incident of which he pleaded guilty. FA are quite clearly poorly run and i hope theres a backlash, LEAVE JOEY ALONE.

Comment #138they prob could ban him but the consequences for the FA could be huge
