FA Charge Barton With Misconduct

July 31st, 2008 · 138 Comments

The English Football Association has charged Joey Barton with misconduct, and it has forced the Newcastle club to issue a formal statement on the matter.

nufc-crest.png

The full Newcastle statement is as follows:

NEWCASTLE United can confirm that it has received documentation from the Football Association stating that it is charging Joey Barton with misconduct in relation to the incident that occurred with Ousmane Dabo in May 2007, at a time when he was a registered player of Manchester City.

The Club has sought clarification from the Football Association as to why this decision has been reached now, given the incident occurred nearly 15 months ago.

Joey will be requesting a personal hearing in relation to the charge and the Club will be making no further comment on the matter at this time.

The reason the FA have only brought the charge now would appear an easy one - he’s only recently been convicted and given a four months suspended sentence.

But how long is this thing going to drag on, and continually give the Newcastle club very bad publicity like this?

Comments welcome.

Not likely but I would love it just love it.
Hope the FA ban him for full season

  • 4 Winn // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:15

are you stupid? we F in need him!! he hasnt done anything that keegan didnt know about or nothing new so dont start moaning about him again.

  • 5 staffsmag // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:16

Guys - he was a city player at the time !!!! Come on get over it. Has anyone seen how the wankers at the sun have sesationalised this story !!! Southern tossers !!!! :)

  • 6 Stami // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:18

i agree with Winn, we do need him, i would really like to see Barton made to do comunity service tho. coaching kids or something along those lines!

  • 7 Marguerite // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:18

I seem to remember the same thing happened with Bowyer, correct me if I am wrong.

  • 8 Frankieboy // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:18

Have never stopped moaning about him to be able to start again

  • 9 Gazzatoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:20

yh you definatley need to get off bartons back, he was top quality towards the end of last season and without him we will struggle! the F.A are just doing this to try and make a point. seems quite a pointless though as it did happen 15 months ago

  • 10 Frankieboy // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:20

Bowyer should of given Dyer a hiding when he had the chance

  • 12 Bill F SPLASH THE CASH ASH // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:21

Horse, stable door and bolted, springs to mind I suppose he (us) will end up paying a fine and him getting a spell of suspension. Brilliant, just what the club needs. As it happened at ManC shouldn’t they be the ones to suffer rather than us. Won’t work like that though.

  • 13 beye the great // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:22

we do need him just wondering why the trial took so long to come to court

  • 14 Frankieboy // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:22

Think they were waitng for the outcome of his case but expected him to get further sentence then they would not have needed to act.

  • 15 geordie jock // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:23

Why has the FA decided to get involved now, Surely this should have been done immediatly after the offence. Looks like they have jumped on the bandwagon and are now able to get an easy guilty verdict after his court appearance. The FA should be ashamed of themselves for taking this long to get involved. Joey Barton should be ashamed of what he has done but should be left alone to get on with his life and career and do his community service.

  • 16 Big Gaz // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:23

I am in the legal trade and can tell you that the FA are bang out of order. Barton has served his time and like it or not the club have taken him back on a last warning. He has commited his crime and served his time. If a bloke who worked in a warehouse was convicted of punching a bloke in the Bigg Market would his employers also punish him if his work was up to scratch???Would they S*&te. He would sue the arse off them.

I am sure Barton feels like s*&t about this and just wants to re build his carreer and do his best for Newcastle United and the fans.

What on earth are the FA going to achive by this. Had he played for one of “the big 4″ it would have been under the carpet 15 months ago. The FA make me sick and are ruining our national game. Arseholes.

Yes I do feel strongly about this matter. :-(

  • 17 Frankieboy // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:23

That I do agree with Bill F but as you say our club will be tarnished yet again

  • 18 steve // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:27

The F.A are a complete joke - I don’t remember them chargiung any other player for a training ground incident (incl Berkovic getting kicked in the head which was filmed and shown on national news) - they should get off Bartons back, he’s been punished by the courts and shuold now be allowed to get on with his life.

As he was a Man City player at the time of the assualt I can’t understand how they can punish newcastle by banning him. Hopefully Newcastle will sue them and bankrupt them, they are an old boys club who do nothing to protect or promote football.

I don’t even like Barton but he’s served his time and should be allowed to get on trying to rebuild his life.

“The Club has sought clarification from the Football Association as to why this decision has been reached now, given the incident occurred nearly 15 months ago.”

Cos some bright pr*ck in PR at the FA has obvisouly figured there is somehting to spin that makes them look like they are doing somehting positive for once. Text book.

  • 20 sas // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:32

There is a sort of precedent here with Cantona at Selhurst Park. He could be out for the season if the FA decide that’s what they want to do.

However, given the fact that he was at City at the time, and it took 15 months to bring the charges, I would think a fine would be more appropriate.

If he does get a long suspension, we could argue that we would not have bought him if there was already a lengthy suspension involved.

I guess the FA couldn’t act pending a criminal prosecution as it may have prejudiced his court case.

  • 21 Ex pat Mags // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:41

I dont remember John Hartson getting charges by the FA for punting his team mate in the head when at west ham. Berkovic or whatever he was called. The FA are a bunch of freaks!!!!

  • 22 staffsmag // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:41

  • 24 Black and White Blood // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:44

This has PR all written all over it.

With great sadness, legally, the FA are quite within there rights to pursue this matter, once a conviction has be obtained. However, and it is a BIG however, in order to do this, they are required to have instructed all parties of their intentions at the time of the incident - Did they…I have know Idea..! If they did not, then they do not have the jurisdiction to act on such charges. Newcastle would certainly be eligible to seek compensation through the FA, as they sanctioned the signing.

Sadly boys, it will come down to whether, both the player and Man City were informed of the FA intentions…!

  • 25 Davies // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:45

    FFS.

    LEAVE US ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 26 Marguerite // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:47

Great points from both Big Gaz (16) and SAS(20).

He is a pain in the a*** but he is our pain in the a*** and his ‘crime’ was committed at citi.

The FA are totally unjust in this and it is another way to beat the stick at Newcastle.

  • 27 Davies // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:48

Black and White Blood - That’s a very good point. If the FA did notify all parties at the time of the incident, I wonder if it was mentioned when we bought this player.

If it was, more fool us, if not, perhaps we’ll be entitled to some compensation.

  • 29 Matt Lacey // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:50

Any sort of suspension will be enormously unfair to Newcastle especially given the fragile nature of our squad at the moment, and it just seems like the FA want to make an example out of Barton just because they can.

Hopefully he’ll just get a fine!

Did anybody else read this? - As a fan of Joey’s (Football, not so much the boxing), and the fact he isnt thick, he’s qutie intellectual and open minded when speaking in interviews.. This is one of the few pieces of journalism i agree with on the matter..

  • 31 borospurs // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:56

It’s the clubs fault and you can’t dump this on Man City. When NUFC bought him they knew he had this case pending with Dabo, and their lawyers should have known that the FA would charge him as well if there was evidence to do so. The club took a gamble that he’d get off the Dabo charge and when you look at the evidence and the number of people who were ready to testify against Barton it shows how idiotic you were to buy him. Its the clubs fault entirely, i hope he gets a big fine and suspension, i just feel sorry for you toon fans,

  • 32 Lacedaemonian // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:57

Same with the Nike sponsorship tbh. They were clearly tightening their purse strings and made it look like they were taking the moral high ground. I also believe that the rags contacted Nike to chase a story on Barton.

The FA are so transparent. They could have charged Joey when he admitted guilt at the Dabo hearing. But they wait a month before setting out their stall.

    They are media chasing losers.

  • 33 ObaFan2 // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:57

  • 34 Chris H // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:58

Surely Barton won’t be banned will he. I hope to God if he does get banned that we don’t have to pay his wages for that period.
It seems that our club are being punished as much as the player.

  • 35 Lacedaemonian // Jul 31, 2008 at 17:00

Karl - good link mate. The Mirror are fast becoming the only semi honest football journalists.

  • 36 GordonO // Jul 31, 2008 at 17:01

Well what did they expect, I mean our club.

I think letting Barton back is a huge mistake.

If I were a big player I would not want to be at the same club as Barton for the sake of my health. He makes us look bad in so many ways.

This summer has turned out to be a nightmare with players not comming and a series of bad judgements from the club…

  • 37 Karl - Fenham Hustler // Jul 31, 2008 at 17:04

Cheers.. But i think they’ll still stab us in the back when the times right, but as clubs are judged on their few bad eggs, i imagine its the same with the red-tops..
Think he makes an excellent point though, make an example of a wealthy ‘would be chav’ because you can, then sweep up after the well to do politician so our government doesnt look even worse

I’m actually beginning to feel for this guy…

Before you all have a go at me, I accept this guy is a bad apple!

The first incident in training, well I don’t know too much about what occurred, having watch how smarmy the guy was during the interview, well I also would have had a go with him…How many of us have played football week in week out, I bet there’s been times where you’ve taken a right old kick or a players have had a go at you for not passing and you’ve though right, enough’s enough, I know I have, fortunately, I have temperament to compose myself, he obviously doesn’t..!

I’m sorry, you are all welcome to have ago at me for this….But the incident outside of Mac Ds, was a farce, most males have got into a scuffle, and that is exactly what that was. From Police reports, JB had been continually provoked that night, and he finally had enough, by all accounts he continually beat this young man – First, this chap was the same age as JB, secondly, did JB not just punch the chap, at no point did he go to ground and receive a beating, he did however, keep walking towards JB enticing him. It is simply a case of getting chinned! How many of you would not retaliate if provoked, exactly, I know I would.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like JB, but lets be honest, how many people would receive a jail term as a result of that..? The system has made an example of him, ok, but he’s served his time – lets now support him and help him turn his life around, learn him how to walk away!….You cant just say it’s not fair because he earns more than you and I, therefore he cant do that sort of thing, GET REAL – You can’t have rules for one.

  • 43 Lacedaemonian // Jul 31, 2008 at 17:22

I am 100% behind him and always have been since he joined us. His actions are hardly a novelty in football (or any walk of life) and the attitudes of some people on here is nothing short of embarrassing. He as served his time and legally speaking he has a right to return to employment. The rehabilitation of offenders act 1974 surely states that we can not prejudice against a rehabilitated offender. Most people break the law everyday.

  • 44 ObaFan2 // Jul 31, 2008 at 17:22

As long as Barton is sorry for what he’s put this club through and the club support him, I am 100% behind him too.

  • 45 Black and White Blood // Jul 31, 2008 at 17:27

    It’s as simple as this…
We’ve all made mistakes, some more serious than others, what’s important now, is how or what he does to redeem himself. Judge him by his actions, does he show remorse, if he’s not then it’s his own fault and he deserves the book thrown at him. However, if the guy has learnt, albeit the hard way, then for god sake let us try and help him….

Hmmmm I recall Vin Jones obtaining a part of a reporters Nose and a farmers ear….How long was his sentence..?

  • 46 Lacedaemonian // Jul 31, 2008 at 17:32

He pleaded guilty and apologised in court. I am not sure I even want an apology, well not from him. I just hope he stays away from any major situations for a couple of years at least.

There are not only far worse people in the public arena ie politicians but there are worse people in football. John Terry is the scum of the earth and he was made England captain. The FA dodged sending some bullets his way.

  • 47 Black and White Blood // Jul 31, 2008 at 17:35

    Lacedaemonian - very valid point

  • 48 boater // Jul 31, 2008 at 17:37

Ho hum… spurs sign bentley - Newcastle have another disgraced player in hot water. The incident in liverpool happened after he joined… so the club has every right to respond.

If kk had enjoyed more luck signing attacjking midfielders (Aimar, inler, etc.) then he may have been sacked, or at least loaned out/ sold.

let’s not get his performances at the end of last season out of perspective… he did fine but the return of the african quartet - and also the three striker system were the main factors.

Poor KK - he is in a difficult situation with the clench-fisted board and now has this…. I suppose if he has given his support we should respect that though…..

  • 49 Stamford Toon // Jul 31, 2008 at 17:42

‘Black & White Blood’ you obviousley did not see the beating that JB handed out which was shown via this site from the CCTV recording. JB did not get what he deserved he got off lightly for all three offences (the CCTV showed 2 people being hit + the Man City fiasco makes 3 in my book). Just because the FA’s action is likely to hurt NUFC you are slagging them off. However I believe they are acting correctly and taking a stand against violence on and off the field and are on safe ground as JB admitted the offence (to get out of another prison sentence). I hope the FA continue this policy with all footballers who spoil the sport by their actions.
After all that is what most fans had been concerned about over the JB incidents looking at comments and voting on this site. Because the club has not been able to sign any players it is no reason for JB to avoid the consequences of his actions. Strikes me that there is something wrong at the club when others have made signings and we a trailing along behind them like a lame duck.

Big Gaz - what are you talking about? If a guy who worked in a factory punched someone and went to prison his employer would sack him! Damn right too!

I personally think that, although we do need a good box-to-box midfielder for the start of the season, there are principles involved. He shouldn’t be able to just finish one season and pick up where he left off at the beginning of the next season. He deserves a ban.

We all saw it Stamford Toon - its just some of us live in the North of England and know firstly this kind of things goes on hundreds of time a week and no one loses their job.

and secondly some of us know just how much given the circumstances, most would have wanted to do what Joey did and some would have done EXACTLY what he did.

As i’ve said before if you’ve been in town at that time of night and had pure scum shouting abuse at you, your mates and your accompanying women cos they think their hard and not wanted to chin the twat then your in the minority.

A little charver got rabbit punched a few times in the face for gods sake. DID you see the photos of the kid. He had black eye. Joey’s a trained footballer he’d have hospitalised the kid if the attack had been as viscious as what is being made out.

Winn we really don’t need Barton. Barton probably turns a lot of right minded people off coming to us in any case. Would much rather the likes of Lua, Kadar and Krul had a decent role model and brought them through.

We are really being embarrassed that we have not taken a stand like Nike and usually the incredibly slow to do anything FA.

  • 67 Lacedaemonian // Jul 31, 2008 at 18:53

Stories like this serve a purpose in my opinion. Those people that absorb every word the media throws at them, allowing unimaginative cheap shot hack-journo’s not only shape their thoughts but govern them wholly with their dirty diatribes. They are separated from those people who are open minded and willing to put some stock into the possibility of redemption. I also cant help but wonder that many of the people slinging mud at Joseph are hypocrites of the highest order.

I am trying to hold your names to memory so that I can discount your opinions wholesale in future.

  • 68 dontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 18:55

off subject. I think we should do a poll “Has Mike Ashley Taken the club Forward and lived up to his promises”

And send the results to news paper so he and everyone knows exactly what we are thinking. That way if he wants to get out he can speed up the process if he wants to stay them he might show 50% of the ambition of spurs. we are not saying spend 60/80 mill. 40 mill is enough to push us on. not 10/15 mill. Fullum and Bolton have spent that just on 1 player.

  • 69 Lacedaemonian // Jul 31, 2008 at 19:08

Spurs have raked in a lot of money from transfer deals this season. I also doubt that they have spent more than £40m. Where did you get 60/80m from?

  • 70 Geordie Nick // Jul 31, 2008 at 19:11

  • 73 jeff // Jul 31, 2008 at 19:18

Right Barton is getting punished now 15 months later for the attack on a player..ok!!! 1 why has it taken them so long to punish him 2 how come Cantona jump into the crowd and kicked a supporter in the chest and was banned for 12 games and did community service teaching kids how to play football….whats the difference in what happened between the two players??Id say cantona’s is the more serious yes he got a ban for 12 games but the comminity service was a joke, that was not punishment….Im not saying I feel sorry for Barton in any shape or form….But He has served time for the attack on someone and has got a suspended sentence for the attack on Dabo……If the F A Are going to ban him why didnt they do it straight away….They are only doing it now because of the uproar the toon have caused by sticking by barton….which in my eyes they would do anyway because he cost 5.5million and its a business now….Just my opinion though….

  • 74 normski1930z // Jul 31, 2008 at 19:19

  • 77 micepie // Jul 31, 2008 at 19:34

Interesting that so far the Guardian “Is the FA right to charge Barton” poll is cutrently at 75% NO votes (maybe it’s us Toon fans that are mostly voting!).

Considering that we are short in mf right now, I really would promote Lua Lua (tout him up with positive words from KK) to greater prominence. From the little I saw last season he looked promising. In the middle that is., not to play out wide. If Barton is out for more time, attempts to sign 2 more players may become 3 though – not sure.

  • 79 lacedaemonian // Jul 31, 2008 at 20:37

The video that was bandied about showed Barton attacking a bloke. He was not sentenced for this though? I thought he was sentenced for punching the crooked teethed chav in the mouth.

  • 80 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 20:52

Quiet night on the toon front..must mean nothing happening zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • 81 scottynine // Jul 31, 2008 at 20:58

Why won’t people just let him move on yes he’s abit of a tw*t but he has served his time and now people just need to get behind him and hopefully he will do it on the pitch this season.
The FA are just making themselves look good to every other club and giving the F**king SUN something new to print.

  • 82 lacedaemonian // Jul 31, 2008 at 21:22

    Hope so mate.

  • 83 JC // Jul 31, 2008 at 21:34

Have we not made a profit this summer on transfers in and out? So much for ’spending big’…. Bull****!!!

  • 84 Michael A // Jul 31, 2008 at 21:48

Dontoon, What promises did he make? I don’t remember any.

“Thanks for saving our club Mike, any chance you could promise me loads of signings like the previous owner, he used to promise loads of things he did”.

“What’s that Mike, let’s try and get the house in order first because the previous tenant rented it to gypsies so no one wants to live here at the moment”

“Don’t be daft Mike, go and buy Arshavin because we nearly had him we did, I read it in one of them information books that come out everyday, only little Dennis does nowt cos as a self-made billionaire you like work-shy fops”.

Patience is a virtue, wasted on the winners.

  • 85 rab // Jul 31, 2008 at 22:00

Just remind me just what happened to Roy Keane when he took his revenge on that scandinavian player, who never played again.

That was on a pitch he took him out and finished his career. I dont think he even got a red card….

But he played for Man u

Not exactly the same situation but cuts and bruises are nasty, but Dabo never missed a game.

  • 86 beye the great // Jul 31, 2008 at 22:03

i asm glad we kept him as i realy think he has changes not just because king kev said so but because he has been to a clinic to get it sorted out but also 1 of the things that has teed me off is how the press are putting words in to newcastle fans mouths according to the bastien of truth the sun lol 90 % of our fans want him sacked now we all know by talkin to other newcastle fans and people on this site that is not true most people are in favour of keeping barton

  • 87 JC // Jul 31, 2008 at 22:03

Double Standards? Wait there’s no ‘?’ about it!

  • 88 bowburnmag // Jul 31, 2008 at 22:19

normski - Wise and Barton are both handy with their fists. Difference being Barton clearly has a few anger managment problems and a bit of a drink problem. Wise is just a little pr*ck. Personally, given a choice I’d choose Barton over Wise. I really don’t like the bloke from my experiences of watching him, listening to him and reading (admittedly) second-hand reports about him. lacedaemonian - Have you got me down on your list for my rant the other night by any chance?

  • 89 Frankieboy // Jul 31, 2008 at 22:20

Have said before barton may of been part of the reason we could not convince some of our transfer targets to sign.
Also stated earlier I hope he is banned for the season cos people will realise we DON’T need him.
That is also a good enough reason to get rid of him.
Would any of our employers keep us on and pay us full money while being suspended for any amount of time…I think not.

  • 90 Frankieboy // Jul 31, 2008 at 22:25

Yeh, can you imagine Wise having a word with Bartron about his future conduct.
“for f*/&ks sake Joey next time make sure there aint any cameras about or wear a makem top.Oh yeh and make sure he is not in any condition to recognise ya”.

  • 91 The Second Coming // Jul 31, 2008 at 22:50

    Steeley (#62)…

“I hope he breaks his neck during training and it ruins his career!”

That’s it ya yube, keep things in perspective.

  • 93 scotty // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:12

just more negative news which we don’t need!!!
I am truly resigned to the fact that it will take a long time for NUFC to become a great club once again.

It really is dark times when we can’t compete against spuds and pompey for players.

As for Barton - he had his chance when SA signed him and he blew it big time!!! KK is only standing by him as he knows the players coming in will be limited - fact.

  • 94 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:23

Totally agree with you scotty..I like Joey don’t condone his behaviour though and the way the FA have jumped on the bandwagon just shows what a bunch of knobs are running the F.A.

Ashley would not let Joey go as he would not be able to afford to spend 6m on a replacement.

  • 95 scotty // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:25

the second coming - or setanta

  • 96 MAG PIE // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:26

second coming - will that be free to watch?

  • 97 Oba // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:30

Another day, another boring one with no transfers. The days are just ticking away now, I expect some by the end of this week at least, but with us going to play in this tournament it might be unlikely. :(

  • 98 BenjiToon // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:31

Lets have some balance of the Barton issue.

    1. he has committed repeated apalling (and criminal) acts of violence that are not acceptable. No Toon fan with principles should excuse him.

    2. he was punished for each transgression by club or law, and took it without complaint. If the FA ban him then we should accept that too, regardless of our midfield issues. (I seem to remember several Toon fans keen to see Bowyer and Cantona punished - why is this different?)

    3. Barton comes for a background I’m guessing most people on this blog were lucky enough to escape. It’s likely this is the reason for the psychological and alcohol problems he clearly has. But he is getting help and any human being who’s accepted punishment, and is trying to do better, should be allowed to get on with their life.

Basically, the right thing to do is allow him to be punished by the FA without objection. Then he has comes back with a clean slate. In the meantime, and from them on, he keeps his nose clean, works hard and plays bloody well.

  • 99 scotty // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:32

Well you know it’s the sign o the times when the mackems are signing more players than us - albeit spuds rejects!!!

  • 100 scotty // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:35

benjitoon - these are all “big ifs”. I think he has a long long road ahead of him and i think the FA will give him at least a 10 game ban……

  • 101 Jim // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:35

    MAG PIE…

Aye, it’s free. It uses web streaming and you might want to read through the Beginners Guide first:
    http://www.myp2p.eu/guide.php?part=software

From this site (and the link on my name) you’ll be able to watch ANY match, all season, on your PC. Just install the software (SopCast, TVAnts), pick your match, get a tinnie, kick back and watch every game, all season!

  • 102 The Second Coming // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:37

    MAG PIE…

    What he said!

  • 103 BenjiToon // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:38

Scotty - they are big, that’s true. He has to prove that he wants to be a proper pro and a better person…not for a few months but for a number of years. I think his sentence for the Dabo thing is suspended for 2 years so he’d got to keep himself in check at least that long.

The Time are saying a 15 match ban:

  • 104 Gazzatoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:46

Aparently barton is looking at atleast a 8 match ban which may actually be a 15 match ban!!

  • 105 scotty // Jul 31, 2008 at 23:56

So if he gets a 15 match ban he’ll actually be classed as a january signing!?!?!

  • 106 micepie // Aug 1, 2008 at 0:17

There are about 50 articles on this on other sites now, but once I’ve heard the first I;m not remotely interested in the others. Only really interested in other stories, news from the camp in Spain, transfer speculation etc.

  • 107 canmag // Aug 1, 2008 at 0:39

enough is enough this should have done by the FA along time ago why now.

  • 108 nick // Aug 1, 2008 at 0:45

If the transfer of Coloccini to Newcastle United will finally take place, the operation must be completed during this day, because president Lendoiro has decided to travel to Venezuela on Saturday. If Depor’s boss leaves without any closed deal over the desk, the operation will not occur, at least in the short term.

Sportpaper AS was speculating on Thursday that president Augusto César Lendoiro might be using his trip to Venezuela as a ‘pressing manoeuvre’ over Newcastle United in order to accelerate the negotiations for defender Fabricio Coloccini. Now the trip of Depor’s president to the South American country has been confirmed. According to Radio Galega, the president will take a plane on Saturday and it’s speculated that if the operation isn’t completed at that time, the transfer will not take place, at least in the short term.

The positions remain clear: Lendoiro wants €12.5 million plus €2.5 million for objectives, while Newcastle United is just offering €11 million plus an additional million depending of the team’s achievements. Also, Depor Sport wrote on Wednesday’s issue the Galician club isn’t worry about the menace of Coloccini’s agent about using FIFA’s article 17 in order to obtain the player’s freedom. The cause is that any player wanting to use this rule, must inform FIFA about his intentions fifteen days before the end of the normal season, something that never happened.

Meanwhile, the rumours about possible replacements for Coloccini have continued to flow out. Now the main candidate is Diego Colotto (27). The captain of Atlas has been appointed as a primary target by sportpaper Marca and also by Galician paper La Opinión A Coruña. Lotina even talked about the case during an interview in Venezuela “We have looked the possibility of making a new signing and I already watched videos of him, more specifically two matches in which he participated. I watched the player in the plane that took us to Venezuela. He’s surely one of the candidates to replace Coloccini.” The Basque also explained why he likes the Argentinean players “They are aggressive and with a strong character.” The other two options that Lotina admitted as possible targets are Efsthatios Tavlaridis and Sotirios Kirgiatos.

    thanks nick - good work!

  • 110 Phil // Aug 1, 2008 at 1:37

when i first heard this i thought - balls, why are we getting screwed again.

but the truth is that we brought it upon ourselves when we signed him knowing that he was already in the shitter.

the FA are perfectly right to do this and despite what some people claim on here are well within their rights to do so. I know for a fact that if I did this then I would get fired on top of any sentence given to me by the courts. If this wasn’t legal the club would be trying to get out of it.

The worst of it is though that whilst he is not playing football he is only more likely to get up to more trouble and drag tus down with him.

  • 111 Chris F // Aug 1, 2008 at 2:11

ok, i know i’m late to the show, but my point is this:

was lee hughes served with an FA ban after his jail term?

    i think not.

and what did lee hughes do?

    he KILLED a man.

he got drunk, ran him down, then ran away.

and Joey Barton is everything that’s wrong with english football?

    do me a favour.

  • 112 Malaysian Toon // Aug 1, 2008 at 2:12

    Two things;

    1. Give Joey Barton a chance. KK is. So he’s an hot tempered prick but if he can change….who’s to say he can’t. If he blows it again then by all means crucify him. If he gets a chance to start the Manutd game cheer the lad. Show him we’re will to forgive if he stops being a prick. Not jeer him while he’s trying to get back on his feet. The FA is doing that already.

    2. We will get players. Most of the other clubs have got nothing as well cept Liverpool and the spuds (who seem to be buying everyone the bastards). We’re not going to win the league guys. Not this season. We just need to build our reputation again. That takes time and the right sort of players. Enough about the Mike Ashley is a wanker issue. I think most of you would be bollocking Abromovich if he was the boss. So just stuff it already. We get the drift. Go become a multi billionaire and buy the club then. Then w
