July 31st, 2008 · 53 Comments

Newcastle United striker Mark Viduka has been ruled out of being fit for the start of the new season.

Mark Viduka - misses start of the season

That’s about the last thing we wanted to hear about Mark, since he had an injury interrupted first season at the club last season, and has been plagued by numerous little injuries throughout his career.

It appears that Newcastle manager Keegan believes the striker will be missing for the first two or three games of the season, and it therefore could be September before the Australian can play again for the Magpies.

It was feared at the end of last season that Viduka would need an operation on his Achilles tendon injury, but he was able to get buy with an injection in May, but we had thought he would have been fit by now.

Keegan talked to the Evening Chronicle today:

“Mark will definitely not be ready to start the season, but he should be back in training in the next week.”

“With the catching up he has to do, I would say, if everything goes to plan, Mark will miss the first two or three games just because of match fitness.”

“Other than that, I don’t think there is anybody who I could say, at the moment, will miss the start of the season.”

Mark has proved he can be a valuable player for the club when fit, but we just have to get more games out of him this coming season  - somehow.

Comments welcome.

    some things just never change

  • 4 Tom // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:13

    And bad news for us.

Good news for a potential targetman transfer to newcastle though! Lol.

  • 5 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:13

How come we buy players like duke who had a great season at boro they come to us and they are knackered.

Love the Duke top class on his day but how many days will we see him fully fit?

If Owen and Martins and duke are injured who will be scoring the goals?

This tournament in spain you get a point per goal and 3 points for a win..be interesting to see who puts the ball in the back of the net.

how surprising eh???being saying for months we need to get another targetman coz viduka will only play 50% of the games at best…

  • 8 Nick Dryden // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:20

    There’s something I never thought I’d see.
Allardyce vetted his players so well !!!

  • 9 ObaFan2 // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:20

I thought this was already a fact and atleast he isn’t out ’till the end of the year like he would have been if he’d needed the operation.

Unfortunately Dukes is injury prone and we’d be lucky if he’s fit for 50% of the games this season. He is a class player when fit though.

  • 10 51times // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:20

I imagine he is cursing my name right now as he shakes with anger. A common theme with regards to the users of this blog.

  • 11 JonGoodwyn // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:21

I dont get why people are saying ‘oh again.. same as usual’
Hes been injured since before the end of the sesason - its the same injury.

  • 12 MattyDread // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:23

Imagine starting the season with only Smith and Ameobi up front…

  • 13 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:23

I am somewhat frustrated like many other fans about the lack of transfer activity at the club!
then we hear Keegan hopes for two more signings! Only TWO?? Can’t say this is filling me full of confindence for the new season!!
ASHLEY OUT BEFORE HE DISTROYS OUR GREAT CLUB!!!!

  • 14 ObaFan2 // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:24

Oba’s back with the squad in Spain? Good for him, so what’s the starting line up gonna be?
Oba up front? if ready and with who?
Defence? the same back 4 Beye, Faye,Taylor and Enrique?
Midfield? Is Spidey available? Guthrie , Milner n Zog?

  • 15 Ian // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:25

If we arent buying a good striker on our shopping list, which I do not expect we are, then really we need a fall back striker in case Owen and Viduka let us down, and Carroll is as bad as some of us expect, just a cheap older player the likes of Sibierski or Roberts they both did a job last year in the respective teams and we dont have anyone for that role.

  • 16 Ericles // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:33

Here we go again. Viduka is back in the treatment room. Is it not time we cut our losses on this sick note?

  • 17 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:35

We need a good forward say’n smith and Ameobi are a waste of money! viduka when is he fit? and Owen, KK said he was suffering from carf problems then it was the mumps now he has back problems!! the only player we can rely on is Oba and what happens if he gets injured!?
we need players of quality and fast! cert.. more than TWO!! its quite sad seeing KK say in january we needed extra players before anyone left, then we need replacements for the player that have left extra players to bulk out the squad now its only two! its a F$%£ing joke!

ASHLEY THE JOKER, KK’S LEFT ONE CIRCUS TO COME TO ANOTHER!!!

  • 18 The Second Coming // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:37

    Prawn… agreed.

Owen’s gone from mumps recovery to calf problems and now back strain. Selling him? We could do with investing in more than 2 players!

  • 19 WesToon // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:44

    HAHAHAHAH

From a sad TOON fan, reduced to laughing
all other emotions have come & gone

  • 20 craig chisholm // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:47

its like i have been saying for months on here, ashley aint going to invest in players of any sort of price tag - period. he is going to milk it, hope we struggle through this season and sell. either that or i just dont get his game plan maybe? i would have thought that if he is planning on sticking around then it would be important to stay in the prem……the way we are falling backwards is alarming and i do notthink for a second that we will get out ofthe bottom half of the prem next season. something else, if kk says he hopes to sign two players withon the next few weeks what does that tell us??? ittells us that they dont have any deals getting done now and that wisey etc are still wading through their long list of bargin basement buys in the hope of finding a half decent player that every other team has missed. Hey Nick Drydon……….many times over the last two months you have told me that i am very negative - thats cool. how do you feel now that the new season is upon us and we have what we have? are you still positive or has your head dropped too?

  • 21 ANON // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:49

if he’s missing just because of match fitness, surely that can mean he’ll do 15-20 min bursts at the end of the game, in order to gain ‘match fitness’

  • 22 ANON // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:50

    obafan, Faye didn’t travel

  • 23 Chris H // Jul 31, 2008 at 13:57

I must admit I’m starting to wonder what the hell is going on at our club. I’m not going to start slating individuals as I don’t know who’s to blame for the situation. We need players in. FACT. So why is Keegan saying that he now only needs 2 more signings.
At the end of last season we had a pretty small squad. Keegan stated that we need 4 or 5 QUALITY signings for next season. Since then we’ve seen 4 or 5 players leave and 2 or 3 (bassong pending) come in.

Now I’m no genius mind, but I can see that this doesn’t add up. We’ll end up in deep sh*t this season cause we can’t avoid injuries.
We don’t seem interested in strikers, yet Viduka is garenteed to be missing for at least half of the season. Owen is hardly garenteed to play every game. Martins isn’t too bad fitness wise but I think he needs the right type of player to play along side. Smith and Ameobi always get picked in front of Carroll (which is just WRONG). Carroll could be used in the same mould as Viduka if they’d just have a bit of faith in him. Smith is a waste of space and so is Shola. I’d rather see Caroll up front with either Martins or Owen or even bother in a 433.

Anyway, I have tried to stay positive about where the club is going, and I even thought it’s a slow process and any improvement on last season would be better than nothing, as long as you can see we’re making progress.

I’ve edited my last statment as i thought Keegan had said we only need 2 mor esignings, but he’s actually said we will have at least 2 more signing in the next week or 2.

I’m just going to sit on the fence. I’m not knocking anyone nor a I sticking up for anyone at the club.

Where are the Ashley brigade! “Ashleys the best! Ashley paid off our debt! Ashley will invest!” where are you lot now! over the months myself and a few others like normski, daiv, angryman etc have been slated but now thing weve said are coming true!

OUR MAIN PROBLEM IS ASHLEY!!! GET RID SELL UP JUST F%$K OFF!! WE NEED AN INVESTOR WHO HAS THE MONEY AND WANTS TO INVEST!! A TRUE FOOTBALL FAN!! ASHLEY JUST GO !!! WE DONT NEED YOU!! AND DONT WANT YOU!!

  • 25 gorskino10 // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:01

waste of space. Need I say more get rid of his 60k wages.

  • 26 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:03

It wont happen but we must get rid of SMITH, AMEOBI, DUFF, GEREMI, and start looking for replacements for VIDUKA and CACAPA!!

WE ARE IN FOR A HARD DISAPOINTING SEASON!!
JUST HOPE WE DONT END UP RELEGATED!!

  • 31 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:11

Feel the tension beginning to boil..I think come the end of the window very little will have changed..even if we get coloccini we still need to spend lots more.

The current squad is small, fragile and not entertaining…add to that some injuries, suspensions and we are looking very very poor.

  • 32 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:12

  • 33 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:13

Keegan bigging up Butt and Geremi…it is just spin to try and take us away from the fact that no investment will or has been made since ashley took over..apart from clearing a debt.

  • 35 Obafemi Martins // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:14

Just wait… patience is a virtue. Can’t believe some people are self-justifying their long-standing panic because they’re simply comparing our policies to Spurs. Not clever.

I’m not even going to go through the long list of why you are being unreasonable, it’s wasted on deaf ears.

One thing I will say - I’m glad you want the best for our club, but I’m REALLY glad you’re not in charge. We’d be screwed.

    PEACE.

believi it or not i have a good feeling about this season i think with kev at the club he can get the best out of the likes of duff smith n owenand every one else we have to realise that we have a brilliant squad ok its short on noumbers but i think high in quality we have worldclass players we judt need to get the best out of them and with kev as manager there could be no-one better to do that in terms of transfers be patient we have another month to go yet there is still a lot of time

  • 37 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:17

I just hope the Toon is not a glorified train set to Ashley to boast about when he is betting millions on black jack.

It seems we are just s trophy to him..take the fans money the 100m off sky and pacify the fans with lets be honest are not exactly transfers worth getting excited about.

  • 38 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:18

    Ashley’s just a devious, manipulative B@”t%&D!!

  • 39 sirjasontoon // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:20

Beye the Great..Smith and Duff are two of the most useless players we have signed recently, have you seen Smith’s goal ratio..exactly there isn’t one..that to me is a lad beyond help.

Duff..1 good game in how many years?

  • 41 bowburnmag // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:30

HPS - I hear you that it’s harsh to think we’ve got to put up with starting from scratch. I don’t like the thought either but I won’t believe Ashley doesn’t have a business plan that is intended to help us progress rather than to make money. I genuinely think we have to give the bloke some time. He’s had a year to get his feet under the table.

Another year of consolidation might seem unambitious but provided we’re making progress in the background for the following season, does this not lighten the anxiety? We’ve tried it with one regime and it’s almost crippled us and still not delivered.

I also hear all of you when you say we can’t afford to lose touch. We’re miles off now anyway. Taking a year out to get everything to gel in the background, come back sturdier, stronger and with a proper focus. Last year was about saving face and saving our league status. This season can be about re-building and getting the foundations in. We might even get some pleasant surprises. It’s not like it wouldn’t be just like Newcastle United to go and do something ridiculous like win a cup at a time when we least expect it.

I just remember this time last year, I didn’t rate Allardyce as an appointment but I hold my hands up and say with the lads we got in I was quietly optimistic and look at the shambles we were left with.

I just think we shouldn’t p*ss and moan too much until we really have something to p*ss and moan about. As much as I realise it’s easier said than done.

I’ve got my trust in Ashley until he fcuks up big time. So far, other than a ticking clock on the transfer window which might lead to the first concrete doubts, he’s done nowt to suggest he’s not doing things the right way.

  • 42 WesToon // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:32

Ed,where are my comments mate??? on all the threads??

  • 43 Bosck // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:47

Hate prawn sandwiches - i’m one of the pro ashley brigade, but i guess most like me havent bothered replying as we are bored of your negativity. if we have noone at the end of the transfer window then there may be reason to complain but i would far rather sign noone than spend £15m on someone like gomez who was utter tosh at the euros.

mike ashley is not super rich he has already invested approx 25% of his fortune in our club, he will pay out as is shown by the negotiation for collicini, but a) he will not pay above the odds as ffs did time and time again for players, b) he is looking for investing partenrs exactly for the reason of boosting transfer funs, c) he has just cleared the club debts, he wont be stupid enough to build them straight back up again. ashley is building this club slowly not trying to do quick fixes by buying expensive flops as we have done time and time again in the past.

  • 44 Cooper // Jul 31, 2008 at 14:47

Ashley is starting to do my nut like - reports hes gambling and all that a few months ago - why cant he gamble on his club and get some decent players in? wheres his commitment?

my doubts are starting to arrive, the appiontment of keegan was partly so he could clear out the shit that allardyce got like smith etc. well im still waiting

  • 45 Todd // Jul 31, 2008 at 15:22

Good thing we didn’t sign Crouch…oh wait…that was a bad thing.

    *Least surprising news EVER*

  • 48 AndyT // Jul 31, 2008 at 17:47

HPS - Who in? That is surely a much more important thing to work out. You’re basically looking for someone with about 500 Million to spend on a Football club. 400 to buy it from Ashley and 100 Million to put into players over the next couple of years - For 100 Million extra you could have a debt free Man Utd. For about the same price you could buy Liverpool.

  • 49 Stamford Toon // Jul 31, 2008 at 18:47

What starts as a report about MV finishes up as anti MA. I have to say that I think there is something wrong with what we are being told about MV. I have had both achilles injured (one partial and one complete tear). On neither occassion was I off the badminton court as long as MV has been off the pitch. I can’t believe what they are telling us. Come to think of it we are being told very little anyway, have we had anything from the new MD by way of a statemnt or comment?

  • 50 FrayBentos // Jul 31, 2008 at 20:48

Someone needs to ban this Prawn Sandwich poster, he just litters every blog with the same old shit whether the blog is related or not. Have some patience you idiot, its people like you that give the rest of us normal newcastle fans a bad name.

I cant wait until the season starts and we actually start playing well. Not because we have 10 new rushed big money signings (who disrupt the hamrony of the team and are only here for the money), but because Keegan has the current squad and few more well thought out transfers playing well as a team.

But i imagine that even then, Prawn Sandwich, you will probably still have somethign to complain about, your just one of them fans

  • 51 None4Toon // Aug 1, 2008 at 2:02

Duke out doesnt surprise me. but why dont we just give away Shola for free (well he costed the club no transfer fee anyway) and sign Zigic on loan as a potential replacement of Duke. keep Smith ok (well if we hv enough quick, skilful but diminutive FW or AM there’d better be someone run like hell and KO defenders for them). however negotiate a new deal that cuts big part of his wage if he still can’t score or assist in coming months …

  • 52 Jack // Aug 1, 2008 at 3:42

Yeah…I seriously think we should release Shola on a free as well…

Tell you what, we need to sign Smith on a new contract which has a much lower regular wage, but a big GOAL bonus!

Guess that can motivate him more and potentially save some money.

  • 53 Nick Dryden // Aug 1, 2008 at 9:15

Craig Chisholm - Many times ? Once or twice maybe

Mind you have to agree I am totally disillusioned with it all now.

KK has gone way way down in my estimation. The FA (finally) and Nike are doing Keegans job for him. If you look the other way over Barton, you don’t belong in civilised society.

Surely to god, we could have got Deriyok, Inler,
Larrson and Insua by now and introduced the likes of Krul, kadar and Lua Lua in to the squad
