Kevin Keegan has said he still hopes add another couple of players to his squad before the start of the new season.

Kevin Keegan - wants 2 new players before season starts
Keegan talked about this after completing today’s training session in Palma with temperatures in the mid-90s - which they are over here in Raleigh, USA right now.
Kevin said he was pleased that this weekend’s Mallorca Summer Cup would be played at night because of the higher than usual temperatures on the Island.
Kevin added:
“We will have two signings coming in – that is my feeling.”
“But nothing is 100% because we are all looking at the same players – and that includes the top clubs.â€
We wonder seriously if two players will really be enough, but we haven’t lost anybody this summer yet, apart from those we let go like Ramage, Rozehnal, Emre, Troisi, Diatta and Carr, who were sanctioned by Kevin to leave.
So we still have Charles N’Zogbia and Damien Duff, and it looks also like Joey Barton will also be fit shortly.
However, Kevin said he wanted 4 class signings only a few weeks back, and we’ve only signed youngster Seb Bassong since then, so the number he wants seems to be going down.
Keegan also said that captain Michael Owen had been left in Newcastle, along with Joey Barton to work at the club’s training ground, as he recovers from back trouble.
All Newcastle players in the squad, apart from Oba Martins, only just returned from Nigeria following the death of his mother – and Steve Harper, who has sustained a slight back injury.
Comments very welcome.

We do need more than two signings. A creative midfielder is essential imo.
2 harrier // Jul 31, 2008 at 15:22
Yes. We have 21 players already - we just need enough to challenge Manu etc until we can tie up more before the window shuts
3 toonfanjonny // Jul 31, 2008 at 15:24
does that mean before the first game or before the end of the transfer window because if its two before the first game and then more then thats good but is not NO! if that made any sense
4 ObaFan // Jul 31, 2008 at 15:25
I think two should be enough provided one is a creative midfielder. Apparently we’ve been given until the end of today to up our offer for Coloccini as Deportivo’s chairman will fly out to join the squad in Venezuela tomorrow. Although article 17 remains an option.

To be fair Ashley has invested more than enough, the lack of signings could actually be down to our depressing league position, no european football and the fact we aren’t situated in London? I’ll be quite happy with 2-3 more signings.

If we bring in 2 quality players obviously that will improve us with a centre half and central midfield a must. If colicinni comes fantastic but im not getting to excited, i still think we need four if we are to make a real impact but ashley just will not spend the money. I hope he makes us all eat are words before the end of the transfer window but if he doesnt i wouldnt recommend he goes drinking in the bulls unless he is prepaired for a few choice comments.

two isnt enough look at the state of our forward line, 2 crocks, oba and carroll, smith and shola a complete joke as there pre season performances have shown.
imo i would sell smith and shola and get a replacement in and if the best we could do was say kevin doyle or lita from reading i wouldnt complain.
collocini could be a key signing becuase of his versatility to play ch/rb/dfm, would still need a specialist lb and a cm to go with the striker and collocini. i would like to see larsson replace geremi
4 players minimum needed i reckon.
smith/shola/geremi/cacapa out
derdiyok/larsson/collocini/ a lb in

The last thing we need is to clutter up the squad with a bunch of signings that don’t fit in - whether they are ‘top’ or not. KK knows what he’s doing. When you’re building a team - whether it is in football, business or anything else, you need to establish a culture, style, agreed tactics and roles that everyone understands and then sign people who will fit in and add something. You improve the team little by little with a couple of signings a year - usually young enough to be trained up.
This is what Man U and Arsenal have done so brilliantly. They don’t even play new people until they’re thoroughly trained up in the team’s way of doing things. In his first year Ronaldo hardly played and even then was often criticised for showboating by Sir Alex.
We have still to establish the culture and style etc . Allardyce set out to do this - the problem was it was the wrong style for Newcastle. KK knows what he’s doing. He believes we have basically a good squad who need to be built into a team with a very few additions. It will take time to build a top team. Throwing money at the problem won’t build a team. And throwing abuse at MA won’t either
Keep the faith!

26 Chris H // Jul 31, 2008 at 15:48
As long as they’re quality players then fair enough. We will need some players to come in for back up though, like a LB and RB.
I really hope the Coloccini signing isn’t dead in the water yet. He would be a good addition. Plus a quality AM would be nice.
We didn’t get enough goals from our midfield players last season and the players we have brought in won’t get many more IMO. Though they might create more which is why they’ve been brought in especially Jonas.

I still reckon we need a minimum of 4 new players. Coloccini, Lennon, a LB and a striker. Warnock would be good, and as for a striker, who knows? Shola and Smith are shit, Oba and Owen are great but we need back up. Viduka won’t be fit and we are desperate for a high quality CF.
36 beye the great // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:02

37 JOeT // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:03
From KK’s quotes those “2 signings” sound as though
1) He knows who they are (well thats a relief
2) He feels confident that they will sign!
He didnt say that, we will only get two or that “two will be suffient” he just said that he thinks two will be in! He also stated that he wants them within the next two weeks (before the united game)
If that goes to plan and fingers crossed they will be exciting signings e.g. coloccini and a top quality midfielder the team will already be looking miles better.
Then we also have to bear in mind that there is a strong chance that ameobi/smith will move on and if this is the case and carrol gets put out on loan we could well be armed with a new striker!
Then if an offer for duff or unfortunately zog comes in that is too good to refuse, you never know we could end up with arda or zhirkov……………Expect the unexpected! It’s really hard to stay positive throughout times like these, but we’re all in it for the long term and despite what some people still think MIKE AShley is! He’s saved us as a football club and just doesnt want his money to be wasted, if the right player comes along and we are able to attract them (the latter being more important that the former) we will bid, of this im sure. However dragging heels in a transfer market will result in failiure, so KK and the wise squad fix up look sharp boys this is a make or break time for NUFC
38 azim // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:03
Inter need 22players and 3 GK..and
I think we only need 20 players and 3 GK..because we are not in the CL ….the 20 players are:
3 GK- Given,Harper, Krul
8 Defenders- Beye, Bassong, Taylor, Enrique,Faye,Edgar,Cacapa, and COLLOCINI
8 Midfielders- Jonas,Milner,NZogbia,Duff,Butt, Guthrie,Barton, INLER OR A GOALSCORING AM and Geremi( 9 in fact)
4 Strikers- Owen,Martins,Viduka, BIG STRIKER…
Our squad is not small in fact…
I personally think Keegan is trying to keep Smith instead of a new BIG STRIKER but I personally prefer a new big striker
Keegan will sell Ameobi for sure

41 harrier // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:05
Keegan said: “We are targeting a lot of players, but for every two or three players you go after, you sometimes get one and you sometimes get none.
“You don’t get all the players you want, and that includes the very top sides. It’s the same for everybody.
“But I’m sure in the next two weeks we will see at least two signings coming in - that’s my feeling.
“Nothing’s 100 per cent, however, and we’re all looking at the same players.
“They are all good players, and because of that a lot of clubs want them.”
42 Vitorbarbosa // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:05
From our squad now, it’s not much different than last year. So, I do not expect miracle from the team. We do not have big signings who will make immediate impact.
However, we do have KK style of play, replacing SA style of play. Which in this alone, will improve our squad a lot.
I really hope the team will play more and more attractive football next season. We might sign one or two star later. Let’s hope….
43 toonfanjonny // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:06
i think we need players who can play in a few positions due to our small squad size i’d have 4 from
LB and RB- Torosidis
CD-hopefully Collocini
CM-Larsson/moutinho/inler/skejelbred
possibly a striker- would love Pogrebnyak
44 Winn // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:06
If you look at it like this…
Martins Owen
Smith Viduka
Zogbia Guthrie Barton Gutierrez
Duff Butt Geremi Milner
Enrique Taylor Faye Beye
cacapa
given
harper
Thats what i consider first team players and its clear we are lacking in defence and weak in centre midfield.
1. defender
1. centre mid attacking
then anything else is a bonus but we need above two!!! what everyone think?
45 Ross G // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:07
Its clear that ASHLEY is limiting us more. Keegan said after the Guthrie signing we would get 4 more quality players. Now you cant class Bassong as a quality player as he is not proven yet. Coloccini and maybe Warnock yes, but that leaves 2 more. If we are really limited I would say we need 3 more at least not 2. If we get Coloccini then we should get a top LB, and a creative midfielder. As Blackburn are adamant that Warnock is staying and our money situation is so low, I would bring in Coloccini, and then at LB either Quedrue or Sorin on a free and then spend the rest on Manuel Fernandes. My team then:
Given
Beye Coloccini Taylor Sorin
Geremi Butt Fernandes
Gutierrez Owen Martins
46 Lionel // Jul 31, 2008 at 16:07
1. Given 14. N’Zogbia
2. Harper 15. Duff
3. Krul/Forster 16. Barton
4. Beye 17. Lua Lua
5. Taylor 18. Owen
6. Bassong 19. Viduka
7. Faye 20. Martins
8. Enrique 21. Geremi
9. Cacapa 22. Caroll
10. Jonas 23. Smith
11. Milner 24. Edgar
12. Butt
13. Guthrie
That is 20 that is definitely ok and and is better than the group that did so well at the end of last season, plus a bit of youth coming through and a couple more signings should be ok to push between 5- 8 over a season. Build it slow and then when we are in a slightly better position next year and the year after put the cash in, if needed. N’zog, Duff or Milner in attacking CM. Plus this is Keegan’s first full season back in, that is exciting in itself.

Obviously it is in MA’s best interests to keep the club in The Premier League, so I’m failing to understand why the investment in the playing squad is not forthcoming.
Since MA took over, how much have we spent on players ??
Bear in mind the playing squad is the most important part of the club, can you see why the natives are getting restless.

Toonfanjohnny - agree with you on those signings:
(DC) Collini - 10M
(DL/DR) Torosidis - 4M
(CM) Inler - 8M
(ST) Derdiyok would be my choice - 5M
After other sales our net spending would be 25Mil.
I would sell Ameobi for 2M, and Smith for 3M and that would be a total of 20 Mil spent for this squad:
———————Given————————-
——————–(Harper)———————–
Beye——-Collocini——-Faye——Torosidis
(Geremi)–(Taylor)—–(Basson)—-(Enrique)
Gietterez—-Inler——–Barton——NZogbia
(Milner)—- (Butt)——(Guthrie)——-(Duff)
——-Viduka/Derdiyok–Owen/Martins——-
Further youth: Spear, Lua Lua, Kadar, Krul, Carroll, Zamblera, Edgar, Tozer etc.
Not a bad looking set up if you ask me.
Definately capable of top six, young and hungry squad. And all for only 20M net spending………
What you guys think?

Here in sweden everyone just waiting until a bigger club in europe pick him up. I guess that he will cost between 1-2 million pounds. I think he is a good buy when NUFC can´t spend as much as we supporters want to. Check him out. He´s really good !

Why are players like Diego, Matias, Van Vaart, Huntelaar and Arshavin still being mentioned as potential newcastle buys? why on earth would they join our club.
With crazy thoughts like these, no wonder you lot have these idiotic views about the way the club should be run.
You will never know which players or how much money the club have offered to bring players to the club, all you know is what the papers say. For all you know we might have offered alot of money for a selection players which simply did not want to come to the club.

Word on the streets is that Collochini will be a Newcastle player within the next 48.
You heard it here first.

I still think that we have a decent chance of bringing in Collocini, it just may take a while. To be honest, I don’t care when we bring him and others in, as long as they come in by 23:59 on August 31st! No longer speculating as to who we should sign!!! Lol.
I’m as miffed as everyone else that we haven’t brought in more people yet (not that I’m unhappy with who we have signed so far, I like the 3 we have already!) but I’m not judging Ashley’s handling of the clubs transfers until the closing of the transfer window. Yes is frustrating and annoying but we HAVE to be patient.
85 harrier // Jul 31, 2008 at 18:20
normski - just says that Colotto is the player deportivo is eyeing to replace coloccini
86 Mad_Magpie // Jul 31, 2008 at 18:20
That’s just about Deportivo identifying a couple of players who could possibly replace Coloccini, wherever he goes.
87 NotAGhostToon // Jul 31, 2008 at 18:20
Its nice to see so many people backing the team, well done lads
be proud! As some have already mentioned with what keegans already done we can see that he’s not gonna let this side just flop, the players we’ve brought in and look as though we might bring in are players which can keep is a bit tighter when needed to bring a more creative side on the counter.
On top of that we’re going to sign two more within the next 2 weeks he seems confident about that, and i recon one will be coloccini (only about 52% tho) and then a creative midfielder if we get that we’re definately stronger. On top of that i wouldn’t mind a specialist left back and a striker in the mould of viduka, between 20-25 and we’ll definately be stronger, however i get the feeling that we’ll sell a midfielder and buy a midfielder instead of getting the tall striker.
Anyone in summary, get behind your team, i understand this is one way of showing that you love the team but you have to put up with things that you don’t want when you love someone or something! little soppy there but do ittttttttt
88 Tom // Jul 31, 2008 at 18:20
Its Italian. If I read it right, its talking about Diego Colotto, who they are lining up as a replacement for Collocini. Looks positive! M4rko, can you let me know if I’m right or wrong please?? Lol.
89 Shearer#1 // Jul 31, 2008 at 18:23
This is depressing man! We need 5 players at least. Viduka’s too old & injury prone, Butt’s past it, we’ve got no playmaker, no quality centre back & no cover for full backs. The only quality players we’ve got are Given, Beye, Milner, N’Zogbia, Owen & Martins. + maybe Duff (I’m willing to give him 1 more season).
90 normski1930z // Jul 31, 2008 at 18:23
cheers lads!!! the only language i speak abit ohter than english is thai and even thats not great…
91 Tom // Jul 31, 2008 at 18:31
The more I think about it, the more I believe that 2 signings might in fact be enough, for now! : ) If we got a top cb, i.e. Collicini, which would strengthen the defence (him/faye or him/bassong) and then went for a creative midfielder, then we might be ok for the top half finish pushing for 8th place.
I believe, as people have mentioned above, that it will be 2 signings before the first game with some to follow after, not 2 more signings and thats all folks! We shall see though!
92 SAMTHECAT // Jul 31, 2008 at 18:49
We wont buy any more strikers, yes we would all sell Smith but no-one wants to buy him and at 50000+ a week im not suprised.
A centre-half is essential and cover at left back, i do not want to see The Zog at left back next season.
Another 2 signings will give us a squad of 22 so the quantity isnt a problem, the quality is another debate.
93 Michael // Jul 31, 2008 at 19:08
Theres getting behind the team which is one thing and being realistic about the future which is another. I think the best that we can hope for this season is top 10, and that would be a tremendous result considering the team and their injury records/quality. That doesnt mean I wont get behind the team, it just means Im being realistic.
94 robertsa // Jul 31, 2008 at 19:10
wat is kev thinking we stil have only two fullbacks.
and only 2 good strikers.
and we still havent got collocini yet.
so id say we need 4 players.
burdisso and rat for fullbacks.
arshavin wud do for a striker.
and get collocini
kev mentioned the full back problem so he might just get 2 fullbacks. boring splash the cash mike
95 Irish John // Jul 31, 2008 at 19:19

99 robertsa // Jul 31, 2008 at 19:36

100 gorskino10 // Jul 31, 2008 at 19:39
Rob your dreaming mate, just get Colocini, Paquet as his team got relegated, and Bilyadinov from Lokomotiv Moscow, there all realistic buys I reckon.

why do people say we should buy derdiyok and inler? They’re not very good! Get:
Sorin (free)
Quedrue (free)
Coloccini (9m-10m)
Skjelbred(3-4m)
Humberto Suazo (7m)
107 Nenad // Jul 31, 2008 at 20:22
We need either a creative mid, or a destroyer a-la Engelaar so that the rest can do some attacking…
108 Spuggy // Jul 31, 2008 at 20:32
Ok lets get some perspective….
It takes a lot more than just buying the best players and hey presto you win everything.
1) The player must want to play for us, live in the NE, and do without European football (which 7 other premier clubs can offer!).
2) He must represent value-for-money otherwise we are potentially the next leeds if we win nothing or are relegated
3) He must fit into the existing team thats being built by the manager
4) He must be consistently fit and in excellent health
5)Ideally he must be hungry and add something to the dressing room - football is 70% about confidence.
6) Finally - our scouts must spot him, he must be available and not targetted by a club he see’s as better than ours!
So there’s a lot to it and it all takes TIME- I can’t tell you how pleased I am that KK is taking his time, not rush buying faded stars. Our youth policy is now nearing that of the top clubs which sorts out long-term success both on the pitch and financially.
So the moral is - be patient, keep the faith and wait until the end of the tranfer window - NOT the start of the season. A top quality signing at end of August should be able to slot into the team if fit.
I would be very happy with Coliccini and 1 top class CM. - thats 5 new players in total.
1) Gutierrez for Emre (creatively not position) - a top quality player by all accounts according to the x-manager, KK and Harry Redknapp. To nick him from Pompey is pure genius.
2) Guthrie - A good passer (we need so badly), young, hungry and ready to be moulded by KK.
3) Bassong for Ramage/Diatta - A bargain with plenty of potential who will provide good cover and competition for CB and Enrique (no risk signing for the money)
4) Coliccini for Rozehnal/Carr - A top quality CB, will significantly improve defense AFTER bedding in.
5) CM Playmaker for Emre - I think this will be our top and most expensive signing - c’mon we’ve lost Emre and this is KK for crying out loud.
Conclusion - a great improvement!! With regards to our strikeforce - we had no problem scoring last season when the supply started coming in.
A lot of people on this board forget we just come out of a relegation battle!
109 valle // Jul 31, 2008 at 20:33
“Ashley has invested more than enough”… Ashley hasnt started investing ANYTHING yet (hopefully he will soon). All the deals done so far gives the club more money than we have used, and last years net spend was about 10 million. A club like NUFC will get way more income than a 10 million net spend… Only money Ashley have used to far is the money to buy NUFC and then remove the debt. That wont do us much good if its at the cost of transfers will it?… No MA will spend… He has to, KK will demand it and the fans will turn on him if the teams hit dire straits (If not before). I think we will get Coloccini as well as Warnock and a creative mid, taking us to a total net spend of 20 million and 6 players in.
110 toonarmy08 // Jul 31, 2008 at 20:36
spuggy-quality post mate.could not have put it better myself!!!:)
111 Michael // Jul 31, 2008 at 20:38
2 signings could be enough as long as they are real quality, hopefully coloccini and a playmaker. However I can’t help but feel they will be a cb and a full back (left or right). If this turns out to be the case then we will have a decent squad with a week central midfield.
People need to shut up about how much money we and other clubs are spending. Yes sunderland and fulham have spent more than us. But both have overpaid for players and man for man their first teams are weaker than ours. How many of their signings would you honestly have wanted us to sign? I would have been furious had we paid upwards of 10 million for Andrew Johnson, or 5-6 million for Tainio.
