Kevin Keegan has said he still hopes add another couple of players to his squad before the start of the new season.
Kevin Keegan – wants 2 new players before season starts
Keegan talked about this after completing today’s training session in Palma with temperatures in the mid-90s – which they are over here in Raleigh, USA right now.
Kevin said he was pleased that this weekend’s Mallorca Summer Cup would be played at night because of the higher than usual temperatures on the Island.
Kevin added:
“We will have two signings coming in – that is my feeling.”
“But nothing is 100% because we are all looking at the same players – and that includes the top clubs.â€
We wonder seriously if two players will really be enough, but we haven’t lost anybody this summer yet, apart from those we let go like Ramage, Rozehnal, Emre, Troisi, Diatta and Carr, who were sanctioned by Kevin to leave.
So we still have Charles N’Zogbia and Damien Duff, and it looks also like Joey Barton will also be fit shortly.
However, Kevin said he wanted 4 class signings only a few weeks back, and we’ve only signed youngster Seb Bassong since then, so the number he wants seems to be going down.
Keegan also said that captain Michael Owen had been left in Newcastle, along with Joey Barton to work at the club’s training ground, as he recovers from back trouble.
All Newcastle players in the squad, apart from Oba Martins, only just returned from Nigeria following the death of his mother – and Steve Harper, who has sustained a slight back injury.
Comments very welcome.

Comment #1We do need more than two signings. A creative midfielder is essential imo.

Comment #2Yes. We have 21 players already – we just need enough to challenge Manu etc until we can tie up more before the window shuts

Comment #4I think two should be enough provided one is a creative midfielder. Apparently we’ve been given until the end of today to up our offer for Coloccini as Deportivo’s chairman will fly out to join the squad in Venezuela tomorrow. Although article 17 remains an option.

Comment #10To be fair Ashley has invested more than enough, the lack of signings could actually be down to our depressing league position, no european football and the fact we aren’t situated in London? I’ll be quite happy with 2-3 more signings.

Comment #13If we bring in 2 quality players obviously that will improve us with a centre half and central midfield a must. If colicinni comes fantastic but im not getting to excited, i still think we need four if we are to make a real impact but ashley just will not spend the money. I hope he makes us all eat are words before the end of the transfer window but if he doesnt i wouldnt recommend he goes drinking in the bulls unless he is prepaired for a few choice comments.

Comment #16two isnt enough look at the state of our forward line, 2 crocks, oba and carroll, smith and shola a complete joke as there pre season performances have shown.
imo i would sell smith and shola and get a replacement in and if the best we could do was say kevin doyle or lita from reading i wouldnt complain.
collocini could be a key signing becuase of his versatility to play ch/rb/dfm, would still need a specialist lb and a cm to go with the striker and collocini. i would like to see larsson replace geremi
4 players minimum needed i reckon.
smith/shola/geremi/cacapa out
derdiyok/larsson/collocini/ a lb in

Comment #18The last thing we need is to clutter up the squad with a bunch of signings that don’t fit in – whether they are ‘top’ or not. KK knows what he’s doing. When you’re building a team – whether it is in football, business or anything else, you need to establish a culture, style, agreed tactics and roles that everyone understands and then sign people who will fit in and add something. You improve the team little by little with a couple of signings a year – usually young enough to be trained up.
This is what Man U and Arsenal have done so brilliantly. They don’t even play new people until they’re thoroughly trained up in the team’s way of doing things. In his first year Ronaldo hardly played and even then was often criticised for showboating by Sir Alex.
We have still to establish the culture and style etc . Allardyce set out to do this – the problem was it was the wrong style for Newcastle. KK knows what he’s doing. He believes we have basically a good squad who need to be built into a team with a very few additions. It will take time to build a top team. Throwing money at the problem won’t build a team. And throwing abuse at MA won’t either
Keep the faith!

Comment #20We need to ship out the sh@t and replace it with quality..duff,ameobi,shola,milner,geremi,smith etc
These players would not even get in a decent prem reserve team that is why nobody wants to buy them.
Two players..if they are of the same type we have just got i.e kids and hopefuls I really wouldn’t even bother.

Comment #22Just seen the statement on the website in regards to the FA charge, this is a public relations exercise by the FA. When was the last time some one was charged with any thing in regards to the training ground if ever???? The FA are a joke always have been and always will be. No defence of what Barton did but how can they justify this?

Comment #24Was in Mallorca til wednesday and it was full of northerners and geordies and most of them werent even going. Their expecting quite alot over there this weekend i hear. But anyway we need that creative midfielder whoever it will be. Take it our interest in Derdiyok has firmly cooled?

Comment #26As long as they’re quality players then fair enough. We will need some players to come in for back up though, like a LB and RB.
I really hope the Coloccini signing isn’t dead in the water yet. He would be a good addition. Plus a quality AM would be nice.
We didn’t get enough goals from our midfield players last season and the players we have brought in won’t get many more IMO. Though they might create more which is why they’ve been brought in especially Jonas.

Comment #32Irish John, cheers for that link, looks like Coloccini definately won’t play for depo again, I just hope his new destination has been finalised, i’d be absolutely gutted if another team pipped us at the post now. Fingers crossed we will hear tomorrow because I read in a link someone posted on another thread that they had given us a deadline for tonight. Fingers crossed he will be a toon player in 24 hours time.

Comment #35I still reckon we need a minimum of 4 new players. Coloccini, Lennon, a LB and a striker. Warnock would be good, and as for a striker, who knows? Shola and Smith are shit, Oba and Owen are great but we need back up. Viduka won’t be fit and we are desperate for a high quality CF.

Comment #37From KK’s quotes those “2 signings” sound as though
1) He knows who they are (well thats a relief 🙂
2) He feels confident that they will sign!
He didnt say that, we will only get two or that “two will be suffient” he just said that he thinks two will be in! He also stated that he wants them within the next two weeks (before the united game)
If that goes to plan and fingers crossed they will be exciting signings e.g. coloccini and a top quality midfielder the team will already be looking miles better.
Then we also have to bear in mind that there is a strong chance that ameobi/smith will move on and if this is the case and carrol gets put out on loan we could well be armed with a new striker!
Then if an offer for duff or unfortunately zog comes in that is too good to refuse, you never know we could end up with arda or zhirkov……………Expect the unexpected! It’s really hard to stay positive throughout times like these, but we’re all in it for the long term and despite what some people still think MIKE AShley is! He’s saved us as a football club and just doesnt want his money to be wasted, if the right player comes along and we are able to attract them (the latter being more important that the former) we will bid, of this im sure. However dragging heels in a transfer market will result in failiure, so KK and the wise squad fix up look sharp boys this is a make or break time for NUFC

Comment #38Inter need 22players and 3 GK..and
I think we only need 20 players and 3 GK..because we are not in the CL ….the 20 players are:
3 GK- Given,Harper, Krul
8 Defenders- Beye, Bassong, Taylor, Enrique,Faye,Edgar,Cacapa, and COLLOCINI
8 Midfielders- Jonas,Milner,NZogbia,Duff,Butt, Guthrie,Barton, INLER OR A GOALSCORING AM and Geremi( 9 in fact)
4 Strikers- Owen,Martins,Viduka, BIG STRIKER…
Our squad is not small in fact…
I personally think Keegan is trying to keep Smith instead of a new BIG STRIKER but I personally prefer a new big striker
Keegan will sell Ameobi for sure
