Analysis Of Newcastle United’s Current Squad

Now that we’ve entered the last month of the transfer season it’s time to take stock on what our current squad looks like.

jonas-gutierrez-44.jpg

Argentine signing Jonas Gutierrez -  looking forward to seeing him play

We’ve signed 3 players this season in Jonas Gutierrez, Danny Guthrie and Sebastien Bassong and we’ve let about six players move on in Stephen Carr, David Rozehnal, Lamine Diatta, Peter Ramage, Emre and James Troisi. The players that left were all apparently sanctioned by manager Kevin Keegan.

So here’s the squad we currently have:

Goalkeepers:  Given, Harper, Krul, Forster  (4)

Defenders: Beye, Faye, Edgar, Taylor, Cacapa, Enrique Bassong (7)

Midfielders: Geremi, Milner, Gutierrez, Butt, Barton, Guthrie, N’Zogbia, Duff (8)

Strikers:  Smith, Owen, Martins, Viduka, Carroll (5)

We also have youngsters LuLua, Kadar and Tozer, who are very good but we’ll not include them here, although but we expect Kazenga LuaLua to get some outings this season, and the two 18 year-old defenders to be shipped out on loan.

Let’s go through the team and what we need:

Goalkeepers – great, no problem and we expect Forster or Krul to be loaned out for the season – but we’re very strong here and would expect either Forster or Krul to be loaned out for the season – probably Forster.

Defenders: weakest part of the team, as usual and it would seem at the very least we need a center-back and left back. If we can get Coloccini and a first class left back we should be OK, since a lot of our defenders improved dramatically last season under the coaching of Keegan and his new team.

If Kevin is serious about saying yesterday that he only needs two new players, we think he’s thinking of a center-back and left-back.

Midfielders  – not too bad given that we still have Duff and N’Zogbia, but the question marks over Barton, and that he may be suspended for a significant number of games should worry Keegan. We look quite good in this area, but another top class central creative midfield player is what we need.

Such a pity we couldn’t get Argentine Pablo Aimar.

As you know, we like Gokhan Inler of Switzerland, and 83% of over 500 readers in our vote, think he would be a good buy at £5M. So one more creative midfielder should do it.

Strikers: We’re in good shape here too, and we think young Andy Carroll will be pushing through this season – or should we say we hope Carroll will be pushing through this season.
But one worry is Mark Viduka, and the big man makes a difference but he’s always injured, so while Andy can fill in for him, we’d still like Newcastle to sign another big striker.
We like 20 year-old Eren Derdiyok, the 6’3″ striker, who would love to play with Owen. He’s good and will only get better, and he looks classy already and fits the profile of a good up and coming player.

So Kevin is right to say we’re not in too bad shape with the squad, but we still need a center-back, left back, central midfielder and big striker.

How about Coloccini (Deportivo – £10M), Nicolas Burdisso (Inter Milan – £4M), Gokhan Inler (Udinese – £5M), and Eren Derdiyok (FC Basel – £4M).

Those figures are just our best estimates, so it would be around £23M for them all – but remember we have brought in around  £7M this summer (Rozehanl £3M, Emre £4M) and paid out very little (Guthrie £1.5M, Gutierrez £2M?, Bassong £1.5M).

If those figures are correct then we have brought in a net of £2M in transfers so far this summer, and reduced the wage bill significantly since a number of high wage earners have gone.
If we bring in the 4 players above we’d have spent around £20M this summer, not too bad at all and good value for money.

Well, that’s what we think – what do you think – let us know.

Comments very welcome – but please keep them civil.

How about coloccini, Bullard, Warnock and Anelka? Total spend about 25 million. All are realistic targets.

Good analysis, Ed. I haven’t heard of half the players we are connected with but I’ll take your word for it; I hadn’t heard of half of Arsenal’s crop but look at how good they are – or were.

Anelka is not a realistic target.
He’d be far too expensive both in fee and wages – and I doubt he’d leave Chelsea.
I agree on the others though but I’m not a fan of Bullard.

I still quite like Zigic, but I’d settle for Derdiyok. I can’t argue with your choice for defenders though.

Apparently Arsenal are now in talks with Inler, which would be a shame. We should have pushed harder on that one, if we were ever infor him.

All in all, we’re really not in that bad a shape. I think Keegan will know how to get what he wants out of the team he has, but I doubt he’ll let us go into the new season without a couple of new signings.

    In short:

    No playmaker
    No Top Quality CB
    No Wingback Cover
    No replacement DM for Butt
No CF to replace the Duke/Ameobi/Smith

    in otherwords

    No top 8 finish

I wouldn’t hold out too much hope on anyone coming in at this rate, seems Ashleys pockets are very deep & he’s only got very short arms.. 🙁 I don’t know why he’s not letting the cash flow, as its not as if eh wont get it back in ST being brought!!
I heard the other day that they’re ringing people up & asking if they still want a ST, as there are so many going due to the lack of Players being brough this season.. 🙁

I am not after a 100m spend but he should spend at least 50m as nothing has really been spent since he arrived.

With regards the debt I don’t think any business man would pay it all off in one go it does not make sound financial sense so i don’t believe that story.

I think this team in its current set up will be battered this season..no depth, poor defence,no creativity and injury prone strikers as well as strikers that should have been put to sleep ages ago.

i’d be happy if we got them but i can only really see us picking up a couple of players and they’ll be defenders in my opinion.

It wouldnt suprise me if the ones we do get we didn’t expect or may even be unknowns (except by tom toon)

i’d take Coloccini for sure. decent experienced CB at right age.
Shorey is preferred at LB – just way more solid, natural choice and maybe cheaper at 3m.
Inler seems a good player but not sure he’s the creative skilful CM we need. how about Lennon (say 8m, with Bentley taking his place?) to play on the flanks and move Zog or Milner to the centre? also don’t mind Duff sold to generate half the funds needed.
second on Derdiyok, good young big striker. doubt 4m is enough tho. lets bid 5m max for him or else give Zigic a chance on loan? Shola the 1st one to go, even on a free. Smith may hopefully be useful when we need to bite or KO the opponent defenders.

Get off Ashley’s back – I’d be very nervous right now if I was a Spurs fan – they are spending money they don’t have. And are set to spend another £50 million on the two Russians.

Much rather have our current situation of building a team instead of spending over the odds for all players.

We will still finish above Spurs with KK in charge, and when we do you can all have a good laugh at Spurs for wasting sooooo much money

    @sirjason
How can u say paying the debt off in 1 go does not make financial sense, unless of couse you know exactly how the debt was structured, which I doubt. But I do agree that 1 or 2 timely signings (like now) would almost pay for themselves instantly in increased season ticket sales e.g. £1 million extra for Coliccini

Spurs are’nt really spending money they don’t have I don’t think.

I make it that they have spent 50m so far and made 36.8 in sales. Estimates – but a total of around 15mil expenditure isn’t much when you think of what you get for your league finish and TV money.

Even if they spend another 50mil on 2players – which I think is probably closer to 40. They will then probably sell Berbatov 28mil, Kaboul 6mil and perhaps Lennon 5mil.

Thing is with us we don’t have anyone that we can sell to raise funds at the moment because there is no way that we could attract better players than the likes of Owen, Oba and N’zogbia with the money raised.

Spurs will have a great team on paper next season but I can see them being lightweight in midfield, still pretty weak in defence and Pavlyuchenko and Arshavin won’t be as good as Berbatov and Keane in my opinion. Over rated and Overhyped after one tournament and neither particularly young.

Am I correct in thinking that Fenerbache had a bid accepted for Derdiyok by Basel last week?

Any updates on this as i think he would be a good signing, so is he therefore still available?

the thing is if we assume we’ll get coloccini (which i must say is looking dodgy, off topic but alan oliver broke this story 1st if u remember) then our first team fully fit looks ok and maybe 8th or 9th will be realistic. the problems would come if we got a couple of long term injuries then we’ll quickly be relying on youth.

Im not too concerned tho cos its in teams like this where you find good young players – cos they get more of a chance. I remember when we went thru that injury crisis about 2 xmas’s ago n we had to put edgar and a load of other younguns against man u n it didnt turn out too bad – entertaining at least cos they try their backsides off!

I think the big problem position is central midfield, where we have:

Barton (suspended), Butt (our best player, but can’t go on forever), Guthrie, Smith (no comments).

Other teams competing for same positions as us:

    Barry, Reo-C, Petrov, Sidwell,
    Arteta, Osman, Cahill,
    Elano, Ireland, Hamman, Johnson,
    Krancjar, Diop, Diarra, Mendes, Mvuemba
    Jenas, Huddlestone, Modric, O’hara
Noble, Mullins, Boweyer, Parker, Faubert, Dyer.

We don’t compare in quality or quantity to them. Never mind the top four, and even some ‘lower’ teams.

Right now, we can only field Butt, Guthrie and Smith. To play on the most important position in the field….it worries me.
