Bassong Is One For The Future – Keegan

Kevin Keegan and Newcastle have agreed a 3 year contract to bring French youngster Sebastien Bassong from Metz, for an undisclosed fee, but thought to be about £1.5M.

Seb Bassong – 3 year deal  for the youngster – now it’s up to him

As we expected Keegan has stressed the French Under-21 international, is one for the future, and will not be an automatic choice for the first team.

The Newcastle manager said today:

“I think he’s one for the future.” “He’s got good experience. We had him for a week, so we knew about him.”“The big thing was having him in for that week. If we had not been able to look at him, we probably wouldn’t have done it.”

“But we had him in, saw him around the players and saw his standard.” “We’re improving that layer just behind the first team with players who can jump in – and he’s certainly one of those.”

“He’s played a lot of times in the French First Division, so he’s got a lot of experience for a young boy.” “I don’t know how many games Tayls has played, but he would be similar to him in that respect.”

We think players like Sebastien are great buys for the club, because in a couple of years or less, they will be pushing for a first team spot, and presumably will be a lot better than they are.

We’d like to see a couple more youngsters brought in before the end of the month, and some could be even younger than Bassong.

But we think this is a wise policy (excuse the pun) for Newcastle.

Comments welcome.

Arshavin will go to Spurs, he was overpriced anyway, worth no more than £12m.

Anyway, it looks like we could have Coloccini in by tomorrow so let’s just wait and see.

Don’t want to throw a spanner in the works here but I heard from friends in Portugal that we have bid yesterday for Cardoza (Benfica striker) valued at £20million, and Benfica have confirmed they will be selling him.

its good that keegan says that he will be more of a back up player because that’ll leave a lovely space from collocini to move in

I have heard we are in talks with Real Madrid over the loan signing of Royston Drenthe who can play LB, he has struggled to get into the starting line up, and has been made available. We are apparently looking for a season loan into a possible permanent deal.

drenthe is a nobody – absolutely no experience in the league ….lets move for players we can afford, wants to mjoin, can excel with the club with a proven record…we need to get realistic..personally i would welcome all the names you guys throw in there the etooes, the arshavins, the van der varts..but realistic i would go for…James harper, nicky shorey (or warnock/baines) \Senderos, Cambell, players with experince and who dosnt have a long injury history

    It’s all hearsay…..and I don’t mean that crap band.

Looks like Newcastle are looking at the long term objective…getting us back in the Premiership, after we get relegated this season for having a small squad with any lack of real quality.

still he was a striker when he rejected us, im just saying that because Baines rejected us once dosnt mean that he cant have a future with the club – in fairness we all know we need a left back instead of that pie eating slow lazy spaniard flop called IcantpassaballEnriqueirathereatpiesanddrinklager

bassong can be a good player but i think and hope at the age of 21 he is more than just a signing for the future as the players that i assume would come in to that category are of the age of 18 and under

There is no link I can find as yet, but one of my best mates lives in Madrid and told me this morning. At the moment nothing is confirmed but he never rings me unless he knows something. He told me about Gutierrez before it was on the net mind you, so there could be some fact to this.

TOP SECRET !! I have this on good sources that he has been quoted in the spainish press – ‘Barcelona Today’ that he is willing to play for Kevin Keegan at Newcastle to help drive the club to European football next season ITS ALL COMING OUT ON SATURDAY MORNING figures state £12.5m with a further £7m next summer with other add ons and etc,4 year contract at £100,000 wit ha release clause (no figures for this) LETS PARTY GUYS THIS IS 100% TRUE***

    ——————————–

He has no previous articles or comments winding up any fans of any clubs.

But he DID predict the Geremi signing on there before he actuall signed.

I though nothing of it at 1st, but after looking at his other articles, its pretty damn wierd!!

If Wenger can find players from 17yrs and just above ready for the premier league why is KK talking about Bassong and our other young players being for the future and not pressing for a place now? Are they not good enough or does KK not have any faith in youth. I heard Bassong was just over 20 and he has first division experience in France. Surely he should be competing now for a place not being relegated to ‘one for the future’.

You have obviously never really seen Drenthe play , the lad is a real talent .He is a dutch international and a typical Keegan sort of fullback . Gutherie played a full season in the premiership for Bolton last season.
