Kevin Keegan and Newcastle have agreed a 3 year contract to bring French youngster Sebastien Bassong from Metz, for an undisclosed fee, but thought to be about £1.5M.
Seb Bassong – 3 year deal for the youngster – now it’s up to him
As we expected Keegan has stressed the French Under-21 international, is one for the future, and will not be an automatic choice for the first team.
The Newcastle manager said today:
“I think he’s one for the future.” “He’s got good experience. We had him for a week, so we knew about him.”“The big thing was having him in for that week. If we had not been able to look at him, we probably wouldn’t have done it.”
“But we had him in, saw him around the players and saw his standard.” “We’re improving that layer just behind the first team with players who can jump in – and he’s certainly one of those.”
“He’s played a lot of times in the French First Division, so he’s got a lot of experience for a young boy.” “I don’t know how many games Tayls has played, but he would be similar to him in that respect.â€
We think players like Sebastien are great buys for the club, because in a couple of years or less, they will be pushing for a first team spot, and presumably will be a lot better than they are.
We’d like to see a couple more youngsters brought in before the end of the month, and some could be even younger than Bassong.
But we think this is a wise policy (excuse the pun) for Newcastle.
