FT: Newcastle 0 Hertha Berlin 1 – Not Good Enough

nufc-crest.pnghertha-berlin-sc.png

Another disappointing result tonight when German team Hertha Berlin took all 4 points, with an 80th minute winning goal.

The game wasn’t very good and the display from the Newcastle side wasn’t much good either – in fact it was very disappointing.

If we don’t get more than two players in, there’s not way, on this performance, that  we can be in the top six, or anywhere near that next May.

It was a mediocre display from the Newcastle side with not enough bite, although debutant Jonas Gutierrez had a good game for around 70 minutes and got a good reception from the Newcastle faithful, when he was replaced by Jose Enrique.

The German side went ahead when Haartmann exchanged passes nicely with Pantelic and was wide open, with only goalkeeper Krul to beat.

The midfielder rounded the young Dutchman, and then crossed back across the goal for Maximuliam Nicu to head the ball into an empty net. Not a good goal for the defense to concede.

Well, this is not what we were expecting sand we suppose it’s going to be difficult, if not impossible to win the Summer Cup now.

Oh well – we hope to sign Coloccini tomorrow, and Radio Cadena Ser in Spain has been reporting tonight that the two clubs have finally reached an agreement for the player.

Coloccini is said to be traveling to Newcastle this coming Monday for a medical, and to discuss terms. We assume he will then sign if all is OK. That’s what the radio station has been reporting tonight.

Here is a detailed report of the game tonight, which was disappointing, very disppointing.

============================

1min – Milner crossed the ball and Shola Ameobi’s flick almost resulted in a goal as the ball goes across the goal and beyond the far upright .

2min – Steve Harper got his first taste of the action with an easy save from Cicero’s 22 yard shot

6min – Gutierrez and N’Zogbia work well together as Gutierrez played a nice flick that let in Charles N’Zogbia behind the full back, and he just reached the ball but his cross was blocked for a corner.

Milner took the corner which results in an injury to Bertha goalkeeper Christian Fielder,a nd he is replaced by Jaroslav Drobny.

Note: a famous name indeed – Jaroslav Drobny was the first left-handed tennis player to capture Wimbledon in 1954 by beating American Ken Rosewall for the title – now back to football.

13min – Newcastle look to be in control and very tidy and have a spell of prolonged possession after which Gutierrez won a corner. Milner’s corner was high, but keeper Drobny took the ball well.

15min – Danny Guthrie tried a 20-yard drive which went for a corner off Chahed. The Magpies took a short corner but Steven Taylor was penalized for pushing.

18min – Newcastle got a free kick 20 years out and young N’Zogbia struck the ball well, which was deflected for a corner. Milner took the corner which fell to Taylor, and his nice lob was only just over the ball – unlucky for Steven.

22min – So far so good for Argentine Gutierrez, who has looked full of skill and the Argentine won another corner but Milner’s corner is poor and blocked by Hertha Berlin’s first man – not good.

28 min – The German team are now playing better but a free kick get to Smith on the edge of the box, but Von Bergen intercepts and clears. Alan needs to start scoring badly if he is to get a games once the other strikers are fit.

35 min – Newcastle have yet another corner as Von Bergen blocked Taylor’s header on goal, but it looked like it could well have been a hand-ball by the German, but play was waved on.

40 min – The game was quite even at this stage, and then Steven Taylor took a bullet drive from Cicero’s right in his stomach. Taylor was down on the ground, but the Geordie lad is made of stern stuff – and he got up and looked OK, if in a little pain.

43 min – Newcastle were playing some nice football in the first half, but it was that last final ball that was letting the lads down. But the approach play was good in the first half and the team looked very organized and were keeping their shape well – the sign of a Kevin Keegan side.

45 min Referee Ivan Gonzalez blew the whistle for half time.

We look to Newcastle to increase the pace of the game in the second half, to get the breakthrough we need.

47min – Gutierrez gets past two Hertha defenders with a tremendous dummy (this boy has skill) but the Argentine’s shot with his right foot flew over the crossbar.

56min – The game has slowed down, possibly because of the heat, but the goal needs a goal to liven the game up.

59min – Damien Duff replaced Shola Ameobi.

61min – Duff seems to have picked up where he left off at Hartlepool and is in the action and looking for the ball. Damien drifted past three Hertha challenges after moving inside from the left, and then Duff shot at goal and the goalkeeper had to make a good save. Enterprising play indeed from the revitalized Irishman.

62min – Tim Krul replaced Steve Harper. In goal, which was obviously a pre-planned move by manager Kevin Keegan.

65min – It was Duff again, as his attempted cross was blocked, and Newcastle gained a corner. The Irishman took the corner himself but it was easily cleared by the solid German defense.

69min – Jose Enrique came on for Jonas Gutierrez, with our new singing getting a good reception from the Newcastle faithful – they like this lad already.

75min – Steven Taylor looked solid tonight and made a good block on Haartmann as he tried to send Pantelic away with a nice chip.

78min – Hertha’s Rafael took a shot at goal but his effort was wide of Tim Krul’s goal. It’s anybody’s game.

80min – Hertha Berlin went ahead when Haartmann exchanged passes with Pantelic and then found himself wide open, with only goalkeeper Krul to beat. The midfielder nicely rounded the young Dutchman, and managed to chip the ball back across goal and Maximuliam Nicu arrived and headed the ball into an empty net – where was our defense?

86min – Time was starting to run out and Tim Krul did nicely to save with his outstretched foot at the near post, after Cicero almost caught the youngster out with a pop shot from a tight angle. Surely it’s not going to be two defeats in a row.

88min – Newcastle were searching desperately for an equalizer and they cannot do it, and it’s the second loss in a row for Newcastle and a very disappointing result, to say the least.

Hertha takes the four points from the opening game of the Mallorca Cup.

Would be nice to see Colicinni sign but that really will not be enough at all, we need a QUALITY creative midfielder, another top defender and a few strikers because Ameobi and Smith would be away after that performance.

Cheers Ed – Spidey looked good in the first half but looked a bit knackered in the second and didnt do much till he was subbed – he’ll def come good and be a hit come the season
Guthrie looks a steal at 1.5 mil – our best passer in midfield
Duff looked a bit more like his old self and can hopefully take that form into the season

Milner and Zogs full of running but need to work on final ball and Zogs def aint a left back

Geremi hasn’t gotten any better at crossing and should be banned from free kicks and corners

Taylor and Cacapa is not a good combination – hopefully Collo will sign and be paired with Faye – with tayls / bassong as backup

We should sell Smith if anyone will buy him – he looks extremely short on confidence and actually dropped into midfield in second half leaving us with no striker up front

Ameobi is still wearing ice skates

Ameobi and smith are terrible! end of.

I was very impressed with guthrie, his passing was spot on and gutierrez was pretty decent, as was duff when he came on !

really hope we sign collocini because once again the newcastle defence looked shakey !

Glad to see tim krul get on, but maybe KK should have brought on a few of the young players on once we went behind?

anyone like the look of pantellic? he was very very good in this game, looked really sharp and always carried a threat! think the commentator mentioned he had score 20 goals in 3 consecutive seasons…worth a risk?

oh well, i still have faith in KK even after tonight! come on the lads !

    Plus Points about the game

    – GUTIERREZ is an excellent player and will start most games this season. He ran the left wing, right wing, centre midfield. He was everywhere and was shattered when he came off. Top signing

    – DUFF looks like the player he did at Blackburn. He’s lost loads of weight and has clearly worked hard to get back for the Toon. With him on the left and Spiderman on the right, we could have two very good wingers on our hands

    – GUTHRIE gets more impressive with each game. Does all the simple stuff well and makes the right decisions. Excellent signing. For me, a definite starter for the Old Trafford opener

    Bad Points

    – SMITH is the worst player I’ve seen in black and white for many a year. His lack of goals doesn’t bother me half as much as his lack of effort. He just stands still and shouts at the ref every now and again. Waste of space and not worth a penny of his £60K a week.

    – CACAPA awful defending against a poor team. Should have been sold.

    – GEREMI watching him is like watching someone after a few pints trying to run around with professional atheletes, has no legs at all. Worthless to the toon.

    – MILNER big shame Liverpool didn’t buy him cause he is so bad at crossing that I now turn away from the screen when he has the ball.

    – SHOLA please explain how on earth this lazy player is still collecting wages from the club. Went off injured at half time and is a third division player at best

Poor! Not good enough, if this is the type of performance we have to look forward to then god help us, we ll get murdered (again) of better teams. tonight showed we have no quality in depth to key areas when our first choice players(only choice) are injuried. Am tired of other clubs signing quality players whilst mr Ashley is penny pinching. top six finish my arse, not even top ten.

Anyone remember last pre season when we thrashed everyone?

Pre season is about fitness, not results, yes we need more players but theres 2 weeks left till the start of the season and we had 3 of our first choice strikers out today and, i’d like to see man utd’s or arsenal’s 4th and 5th choice strikers

ACD, I said to my cousin that Pantelic looked the business, I reckon that he’s worth a try, but at 29, I wonder if they would. Jonas, Duff and Guthrie look good, if they intend to play him DM, then he needs to work on his tackling and defensive work somewhat, apart from that he’s looking like an excellent player.

It looks like alot of us here see what’s wrong with the team, let’s hope they can get it all sorted before the start of the season.

Well lads not goin to sugar coat it that was TWATFUL!!! can smith actually shoot? surely as a prem league striker you must remember how to do that! Shola is worse than a pub player (no offence to any pub players boys) he is total crap! cant run cant dribble cant shoot cant score! defence looks shaky without faye there, we need top CB. We need LB as enrique makes stupid mistakes & Zog doesn’t want to play there. The only plus for me was Spidy running his arse off, he put more graft in within 5 mins than shola did the whole game! guthrie looks a good lil player, good passer good grafter also has good vision & can pick put killer pass, once we have strikers on the pitch who can score he’ll do well. We are so far off from top 6 quality now, we need to get AM in. Lets go for Arshavin, would give us the quality we need! We also need another CF as you can see with no Owen/Oba/Vids we’re stuck with the chuckle brothers! i think we’ll get spanked off mallorca on sunday with that team! INVEST MA NOW PLEASE!!!! for the love of god please!!!!

sorry but i am utterly depressed after watching that performance. Berlin were playing in Moldova last night in UEFA cup and we never threatened their goal all night. The forwards were crap, the midfield didn’t make a forward run all night, and we’re still rubbish defensively.

we are crying out for at least one creative playmaker and all transfer efforts should be made to fill that role(s). We are screaming out for someone who can make a telling pass and unlock the door because we toil and toil away with no end product. How many shots on goal did we have tonight? Less than 4 I would estimate.

cacapa – is not good enough for Premier League
milner – works hard but he is not class and can’t cross a ball or make a killer pass to save his life.
zog – is wasted at left back
ameobi and smith – should be sold but cos noone will take them they should be benched. They are both an absolute embarassment. They are Championship standard at best.

    One bright spot was Gutierrez.

I’ m having another bottle of Becks to ease the pain.

I think you’ve overrated Smith and Ameobi there.

We really need another Viduka-like signing and maybe a good general attacking signing, who can play anywhere in midfield or as a striker.

If we got those types of players and Coloccini then we’d be sorted.

Otherwise if we’re left with our current strikeforce at any point during the season then we might as well forfeit the game and give the other 9 players a rest.

Ah, come on – pre-season friendlies are meaningless. Need I remind everyone that we had a good pre-season last year, and look where that got us? It’s a long time ago and my memory is fuzzy but I don’t remember us being particularly s***-hot in pre-seasons in KK’s first spell. I remember beating the Scum on pens once, that’s about it…

The point for those saying calm down its only a friendly is this:

The players we all know are crap (Smith, Shola, Cacapa etc) that KK backed and decided to give a second chance to, are not repaying his faith but are being more lazy than ever.

    That’s why we are annoyed.

I don’t think too much doom and gloom helps. And KK signings seem to be a lot brighter than some of what we had before. Plus it’s best to highlight any shortcomings now, because there is still time to add a quality defender, mf and striker. Added to the returns from injury would mean we would be infinitely more solid, creative and sharper in a few weeks.

Thanks people very helpful. I must say that I am somewhat skeptical with all of these rave reviews on Duff, he was awful last season, maybe it’s the whole ‘having a fit preseason’ thing?

Seems as if Milner and Geremi will be up to their old tricks again. What I’d do for a young Solano!

And seriously we need a free-kick taker, Geremi has got to stop. I say give B’ham their 5M and employ Seb out there as our deadball specialist.

DC Magpie – I was one of the ones last season saying get rid of Duff, but not the way he is playing now. Everytime he gets the ball he runs straight at the defence and shoots. Constantly looks dangerous. Think of Joe Cole for Chelsea, thats how Duff has played in these opening friendlies.

Howay, KK is hardly giving a second chance to Smith and Ameobi, he’s got no choice but to pick them! And I don’t subscribe to the opinion that Cacapa is crap, he’s generally looked a classy player when I’ve seen him. One bad game when he was injured and some myopics have never looked beyond that. (Saying that, still ultimately backup)

Geremi… 4 (His crosses is better than milners, but he cant run)

Zog… 5 (He didnt do to well at left back, but he was lively at left wing without creating anything tho)

Cacapa… 4 (He was left behind each time HB countered)

    Taylor… 5 (Strugled alongside Cacapa)

Jonas… 8 (He was everywhere, one minute he was trying to create, the next defending)

Milner… 3 (Every ball he passed or crossed into their area ended up as a counter attack)

Guhrie… 7 (He did well, but didnt do anything extrodenary)

Butt… 4(Cant run, and he didnt break enough counter attacks for a DM)

Positives: Gutierrez looks a quality player, good signing. Duff looked sharp, dribbling past players like he used to at Blackburn. Negatives: Smith & Ameobi are woeful. With Viduka so injury prone I think we def need a big striker. Shame to hear about Inler to Arsenal 🙁 Maybe we can get Diaby or Denilson from them. & does anyone think we should go for Arshavin now Spurs aren’t in for him?

I think we should get an amc. I dont think butt and guthrie should be on at the same time. Our style of play is so predictable. Every time we get the ball we just go to the wing. There is hardly any penetration from the central.

We also need a good striker who can attack the crosses and get on the end of some corners. Lastly we need intensive work on our crosses. I hardly see any cross tonight that actually threatens hertha.

I can’t work out why he went for Cacapa over Bassong tbh. Enrique should have started at Lb, Jonas and Duff on the wings, and any of the young strikers we’ve brought (I assume we have brought some) over Smith and Shola. Those two are players in the exact same mould- god awful. Thankfully, Geremi is not our first choice right back, and we have a few people to come in, namely Beye, Faye, Given, Owen, Martins and Viduka

But who cares if we lost, it was pre-season. There were positives from Jonas, Guthrie and Duffer when he came on.

if we get a playmaker and play a diamand with either butt or guthrie in DM and then the playmaker in AM with owen and martins (or even owen in AM and get a new striker to play along side martins that holds the ball up well)
get coloccini in aswell and i believe that should do as we would have( not including youngsters)

    gk given/harper/krul/forster
    lb enrique/bassong/zogs
    rb beye/coloccini/geremi
    cb coloccini/faye/bassong/taylor/cacapa/edgar

    dm butt/guthrie
    rm gutierrez/milner
    lm duff/ zogs
    am owen/ new signing

    st owen/martins/viduka?/caroll??/smith???/
    ameobi???????????????????/ new signing

We were missing several first team players tonight; Faye, Beye, Owen, The Duke, Martins, Bad Boy Barton (have i missed anyone). That’s a lot of quality players missing, so let’s just relax a wee bit. Keegan knows we are short of quality and I’m sure we will be bringing people in, Everton manager David Moyes said he was looking for 5 or 6 players to come in so i suspect there is a lot of activity to come. Surely big fat Mike won’t invest all that money into the club and underspend on the most important income earning part of the business – the 1st team.

    Up the toon!

This game underscores how much Abdulae Faye means to this team. He’s extremely solid in defense, and when he got comfortable with Taylor the team took off. He’s great in the air, and is a constant threat off corners. I think his committment is excellent, look how he scored agains MANU when we were down 4 goals last year.
