News on Deportivo’s International web site today says that if Newcastle are to complete the signing of defender Fabricio Coloccini. it must be completed today, otherwise there will be some delay at best.
Col0cccini – patiently waiting to see if deal can be made
It turns out that Deportivo’s President Lendoiro has decided to travel to Venezuela tomorrow, and if the Deportivo Executive leaves without any closed deal for the defender, the Spanish club is saying the transfer will not take place, at least not in the short term.
Sportpaper AS was speculating yesterday that President Augusto César Lendoiro might be using his trip to Venezuela as some kind of a manoeuvre or leverage to get Newcastle United to quicken the negotiations.
The news according to Radio Galega, is that the President will leave tomorrow morning to travel to Venezuela, where the Deportivo team are in pre-season training.
Coloccini was not on the trip earlier this week, because he was going to work on his fitness in Spain, and also be available to decide his future.
Here are the official positions as the International Deportivo web site lays them out:
- Lendoiro wants €12.5 million (around £10M) plus €2.5M (around £1M) for incentives
- Newcastle United are currently offering €11M (around £8.8M) plus an additional million euro (£0.8M) depending on the Tyneside team’s achievements.
The bottom line is that Deportivo are wanting a total of £11M, including incentives and Newcastle have offered £9.6M – and that’s not a huge difference – around £1.4M.
We can still get this deal done – why not half the difference so we pay Deportivo £9.6M plus £900K incentives – that would be around £10.5M total. That would appear to be less than £1M additional that Newcastle are currently offering.
But of course, we just don’t know the details, and these transfers are never easy these days – we always have to remember that.
Also, Depor Sport wrote on Wednesday the Galician club isn’t too worried about Coloccini potentially using FIFA’s article 17 (Webster) in order to obtain his freedom.
Apparently any player wanting to use this rule, must inform FIFA about their intentions at least 15 days before the end of the season, and that’s just didn’t happen.
If we were to bet on this one, we still think he’ll be a Newcastle player soon, although admittedly our predictions in the past have been less than stellar. 😀
Meanwhile, there are rumors building in Spain about a possible replacement for Coloccini at Deportivo, the main candidate now being Diego Colotto.
There is still a good chance we can bring the player in, and we think the news yesterday that Spurs may also be in interested, was only mischievous speculation.
Comments welcome.

Comment #5This guy is a must!! We can almost start building around him. How come it’s only now that the F.A decide to stick their unwanted noses in to the Barton affair a 15 match ban would be a punishment against Newcastle for something that happened at Man City. Honestly it’s like we’re genuinely being conspired against

Comment #7I so want that curly colloccini signed up..seems like a game of cat and mouse to me..we are desperate for players he is not that expensive and our defence would improve bigtime with him in it.
I hope we tie this up today..I will still not be satisfied though as we need more than just him.

Comment #8If we sign him today I’ll be a happy man. Firstly that we’ve signed the best defender the club’s seen since the Smoggie Charver sicknote. Secondly because it will be very apparent that Vetere etc. are actually doing their blo*dy jobs.
However, I’m gonna expect the worst in the hope I’m pleasantly surprised!

Comment #10I’d be cautious about building a team around Coloccini. He’s a really good player, but you don’t want to be basing your defence on him for next season.

Comment #12If we don’t sign him after all this it will be a real kick in the teeth he is a class act end of story and better than anyone we have in our back four by a mile.
Get him signed Mike and then move onto the next target.

Comment #16You migth think we had learned over the years. Not the first time we are sitting on the fence, and allowed other clubs to pick up players we both need/want.
I`m not saying some other club are about to get him, but some papers are saying that spurs are in the hunt.
1 million, why cant we just meet there demands for once. We picked up Boumsong for 8, no qeustions asked. Just 6 months after he joined Rangers for free. but this time, nah, god damn it!
Just get the lad, he`s a brilliant player and a huge boost for the whole club, not just the leaky defence….

Comment #21Why is there all this rubbish just get the man in and get him in quick according to all reports he has agreed personal terms and for the sake of 1m come on we forked out 5m for joey barton so am sure 10m for Fabricio Collocini would be good business

Comment #22Well… If he can help our defense settle and offer us more power for next season, then i cant see why Coloccini shouldnt be worth the ekstra 1 mill.

Comment #23i posted on here that he was 100% not going to newcastle 24 hours before his agent said the same. This was because it was my understanding that he was having a medical at spurs on monday. This appears to have broken down after his club hiked up there price to spurs. It looks as though the player wont be going anywhere.

1. He is EXACTLY the kind of experienced CB we need. Could end up being our best signing for years
2. His Agent described the Newcastle move as a dream move because….we are doubling his current wages. That stinks of the Luque situation all over. Why can’t the Agent say he wants to come here for more reasons than just money

Comment #28New world interview up with KK.
Main points:
– Thinks Bassong is one for the future, but wouldn’t be suprised to see him push his way into the team very soon.
– Aim is to slip 3 or 4 signings like him in under 3 big signings. *Speculation on my part is that Spear will be another of those for the future, if it ever gets confirmed.
– No mention of any more incoming signings, but WASN’T asked.
– Raving about Guthrie and Jonas again
– Owen and Faye left behind to work on fitness because they’re a couple of weeks behind.
– Martins can’t play because of minor injury (and injection), but thought it best to bring him out with the squad for team building.

Comment #29No offence ED but why are you saying its on their official website when it isn’t.
This really bugs me as your just as bad as the so called national in the know papers, get your facts right and stop getting peoples hopes up or down for that matter with inaccurate nonsense, it takes 10 seconds to look at depo’s official website to see what you state is not on there.
Its on their unofficial fans website rather like this one, please stop the lazy reporting or we might as well just read The Sun and surely you want to be better than that.
Sorry to moan it just bugs me no end.

Comment #34Coloccini, Warnock and Källstrøm would be the 3 big signings from what the so called insiders would have us beleive… If thats the case and they aim to get 3-4 more like Bassong for back-up then i am VERY happy with our team for next season.

Comment #35On a side note, Everton are putting Leighton Baines up for sale after only one season because they want Warnock from Blackburn.
I think if the Toon wrap up deals for Coloccini and Warnock this week, our defence will not be an issue next season – we may even get credit for a strong defence on MOTD
