Skuy Sports is reporting that Newcastle United have confirmed that talks to sign Fabricio Coloccini are indeed at an ‘advanced stage’.
Fabricio Colccini – almost a Newcastle player
Reports in Spain last night, that we published here on this site, had claimed that Newcastle had already agreed a deal to bring in the Deportivo La Coruna defender.
The comments from the Argentine’s agent, Marcelo Lombillo, came after Deportivo had rejected an initial offer from Newcastle, which seemed a good one at around €9.5M (euro).
However, it very much looks like the versatile defender will be joining his Argentine team-mate Jonas Gutierrez, who made his Newcastle United debut last night against Hertha Berlin, on Tyneside.
Now all we need is to sign the Argentine left-back and their team-mate Nicolas Burdisso, the Inter Milan left back, and our squad will be in a lot better shape.
It’s just a pity we couldn’t have enticed Pablo Aimar to join us too – but shouldn’t get greedy – you win some you lose some. 😀
A Newcastle club spokesman confirmed to Sky Sports News that while a deal had not yet been completed, talks were continuing and were making positive progress.
Speaking after Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat to Hertha Berlin on Friday, manager Kevin Keegan admitted a new signing was imminent.
Keegan told nufcTV:
“There’s one deal which is ongoing at the moment.”
“Hopefully we’ll have something to tell you over the weekend.”
Kevin also managed to talk to the Shields Gazette today about Coloccini:
“It’s ongoing. I’m hopeful, but it’s not a done deal yet,”
“He’s played for Argentina, and not many bad players play for Argentina.”
There’s no doubt that Coloccini is a good player. and was said to have his best and most consistent season for Deportivo last season when he played around 35 times for the team.
And on the Deportivo fans’ web sites, the fans are not too happy at all, to be losing one of their best players – and that’s always a good sign for the buying club.
He also looked very good playing for Argentina in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and is a no-nonsense and physically strong player.
We think he will be an excellent signing by Keegan, and we need to give Dennis Wise some credit too, if this deal finally goes through, since the Spanish club seem to have put him through the wringer, more than once this week.

Comment #83Cacapa was also a great player loved by the Lyon fans. Let’s hope this deals completes and turns out good.
We should continue targetting players that no one else is bidding for. And looking at the market now, Zhirkov, Arshavin and Arda are still available if we would pull out the chequebook.

Comment #84Hopefully he continues his form with us. Have seen too many big money moves with huge expectations ending up in flops.

Comment #86we need strikers, ASAP, if possible, 2 of them!
bcoz apparently in case we’re playing a 4-3-3 formation, then clearly we don’t have enough strikers to do so. owen=injury prone, oba=lost inspiration, viduka=lost his head, totally waste buying him last season, too old, too slow too much injuries, should just retire and sleep on the bed. guess that’s all the strikers that we have, and apparently, they are all not very promising due to problems with injuries etc. carroll is good, but just not good enough yet, and we can’t be challenging a top six spot with NO strikers!
ps: smith and shola and not considered as strikers, they are more like spectators or a clown juggling their own b@#LS if you like..
