Ameobi and Smith Need To Be Moved Out

August 2nd, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 153 Comments

Shola Ameobi, who looked hopeless again last night, has had the misfortune to pick up an injury, when he limped off during Newcastle United’s 1-0 defeat to Hertha Berlin.

shola-ameobi.jpg

Shola Ameobi - will not be at Newcastle come September

This is bad news because the club want to unload Shola before the end of the month, and like his strike partner last night, Alan Smith, they are not good enough for Kevin’s squad - at least that’s our opinion.

Those are the only two fit strikers Newcastle have right now, and we could have done a lot worse than fly out Italian Under-19 youngster Fabio Zamblera, and given him a 45 minute run out in one of the games.

Ameobi apparently felt his hamstring in the second half, and was replaced by Damien Duff in the 59th minute. The good news is that Shola will be out just 10 days, so there’s still time to unload him before August 31st comes around.

Ameobi told the Shields Gazette today:

“I felt my hamstring tighten up, and, as soon as I felt that, I came off. Hopefully, I caught that in time.”

“I’m just hoping this little niggle won’t hold me back, as I need to stay fit.”

There are a few clubs that have tracked Shola, but there’s just two things stopping them, his transfer price is too high, and his current wages at Newcastle are too high.

That’s the real reason he hasn’t been moved out - sounds too familiar doesn’t it.

Ameobi added:

“I still want to be a Newcastle United player, and I still am. That’s where my focus is.”“I had quite a few injuries last season.”

“There were different things that kept me back, and stopped me being as fit as I should have been.”

“I missed a lot of pre-season last year with a thigh problem, and that’s what held me back. I wasn’t fit enough to challenge for a place in the team.”

“This season I’ve made sure I’ve been right. I’ve worked very hard. The manager wants us to be one of the fittest teams in the league.”

We heard the same thing from Shola before last season started, but he still managed to have his worst season ever at the club. Too much talk and not enough action, is what’s wrong here.

Newcastle are willing to let him go for the right price – understood to be £3M – and Ameobi is well aware of this.

However, we think we’ll do very well to get £3M for him, and we wouldn’t be at all surprised if we accept any offer over £2M that we get before the end of August.

Shola continued:

“I’m still a Newcastle United player, and I have to be professional about it,” “Whatever happens in the next month or so, I have to make sure my head’s right.”

“Football’s a frustrating game at times, but you have to keep your head up and hope for the best.” “This is the fittest I’ve been in a few years, and hopefully, that can translate into playing more games. I need to improve my form.”

“I have to look after myself, and, no matter how much I love the club, I have to satisfy my need for first-team football.” “I’m working hard. Fitness has been a big issue for me in the last two or three years.”

“I’ve made sure I’ve had a good pre-season by keeping myself fit over the summer.” “Regardless of what’s happening I have to be professional, make sure my body’s right, and that I’m in the right frame of mind.”

“It’s just about me keeping up my fitness – that’s the main thing for me.” “The last couple of years have been frustrating for me.”

“I need to be playing, regardless of how much I love the club.”

When you look at who’s left in the squad right now, the club have made an excellent job of getting rid of fringe players and those that were overpaid for what they gave back to the side.

Assuming Shola moves on, the only other player we’d still like to move out is Alan Smith.

Why?

Because he’s just not good enough for the team, and he’ll get very few games this season if he continues the very poor form he’s displayed this year.

What do you think - let us know.

Comments welcome - but keep them civil - thanks.

Im sorry but it happens EVERY SINGLE transefer window. Shola Bambi-obi ALWAYS claims he’s injured (cant sell an injured player can we, how will he pass a medical?) In the past the guys needed hip surgery, then when the window slams shut this pillock then makes an amazing recovery!

Get Out Of My Club you complete waiste of space!

  • 2 Rob Davis // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:48

Alan Smith is world class and we should definitely keep him.

  • 3 51times // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:51

Dondatta - You’re saying Ameobi got hip surgery he didn’t need just to stay at the club? Do you realise what a fool you sound?

And if it’s ‘your’ club because you support Newcastle, isn’t it his too as he’s a Toon fan as well? Surely he has more of a right to call it his club, as he’s actually played for the first team.

  • 4 Dondatta13 // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:58

No what Im saying is …. transfer window opened, he was in need of surgery. Said player didnt get surgery during that window. Window closed, said player suddenly feels better and makes himself available. I shall try and come back with dates and windows ..

  • 5 Sparky G. // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:58

Shola and Alan… what can I say… never have two people deserved moves to League One more than them. Put them up for sale. Let’s sell them and cut our losses. The longer they stay, the worst the season will go for us.

  • 6 Dondatta13 // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:01

51 Times, are you one of those silly seals that will clap anything wearing a black and white top? sounds like it. I pay good money to watch NUFC play football, I buy the tops and try and support them as much as I can. This tool is not worthy of that shirt and I for one am sick of watching him amble around whilst I help pay his wages!

  • 7 DC Magpie // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:02

no question about it…taxi bus for Smith and Strolla!

I am much more intrigued by this news:

Sources close to Rosenberg suggest that Newcastle have the player (Skjelbred ) on their shortlist but are waiting to see how other potential deals pan out.

A source from the Norwegian club told the Chronicle: “What is interesting is that Newcastle are still following Skjelbred and are preparing to lodge a £4.5m bid for him if their bigger transfer targets slip out of their hands.

“Which is also why Skjelbred is putting off signing a new deal with Rosenborg. He does not want to make things messy if Newcastle or another club he might find interesting comes in for him before the end of the transfer window.”

Seems Skjelbred is happy to be our back-up plan assuming we don’t land a better player first, Diego possibly? That works for me although the thought of not getting either makes me really uneasy!

Man i do like smith but im beginning to think you might be right ed, he was woefull last night as was shola

  • 9 elliston // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:03

i AGREE but i do like alan smith. I am constantly worried about our club at the moment we need 11 players to cover our first eleven and then next year the next loada players have got to be even better than them. I as a newcastle fan are started to give up on the game because our team is getting seriously boring. Im sorry but how many youngsters get that much better. Buy good youngsters young!!! Anderson nani cristiano. Players do not improve so talk about young ones in my opinion is rubbish the age for good
players is 18. Our new players are not even that good but collicini is awesome. Another john terry… Be excited by that

  • 10 I hate Spuds! // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:03

I would rather keep Ameobi who actually cares about the club than Smiff who is an absolute disgrace. We’ll be relegated if we have these 2 lethargic lumps up front. The excuse that Smiff gives 100% every game is tosh! I’d give 100% and more if I had the chance to play for this great club!

  • 11 Ross G // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:04

They both need to go, and I think Ameobi still might late on. I must say though I prefer Ameobi to Smith, at least he knos how to score ad can keep the ball. I watched the Berlin game and Smith was static, didnt contribute, and when he got the ball he lost it, the guy is trash I would offer him to Sunderland as Keano loves him. Get around £6m for both of them we can bring in Derdiyok.

the pair of them ruind a decent trip 2 doncaster with some abysmal finishing especially ameobi he missed 3 good opertunaties

  • 14 Ciaran // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:08

I’ve said before, Ameobi needs to realise he is a Championship player. He seems to think a move to Norwich is beneath him, tha’s whats infuriating about the whole mess. He sits around waiting for a Premier League offer that never comes, so he sticks around wasting space on the squad. Completely agree with you Ed, where’s the harm in seeing what we have in Zamblera instead of watching that lumbering fool mince around until he picks up another injury?

  • 15 Mad_Magpie // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:10

Ameobi always looked half-decent alongside Shearer, but playing alongside someone like Smith makes for a comical showing. They shouldn’t get any near our squad, let alone our first-team. Shola has always thought he is better than he actually is and it’s time for him to move down into the Football League to his standard of play. He’s a local lad so it is understandable how much he wants to prove himself, but he needs to face reality.
It will be a sad day for NUFC if those two play together upfront in a competitive game.

  • 16 Jeff // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:10

it can’t be better if Smith get offloaded …but is there any club potentially interested in him?

any club will pay us 3-4M and pay Smith 60K per week?

definitely, he has his price with no market…

  • 17 51times // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:12

Haha, Dondatta, you can’t afford to watch Newcastle at SJP, be honest.

And even if you could, you’d be the type to boo at half time. If you don’t like the way the team plays, just don’t clap them off. Those types sicken me by claiming to support this club.

  • 18 SINGAPORE // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:12

    FINALLY!
ALL newcastle fans have been waiting for this article for ages!
    Sell SMITH n AMOEBI@@!!
    KK, read this!!!!!!!!!

  • 19 Norway Toon // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:15

First of all. Sell Ameobi and Smith. Huge paycheck, and the play like crap.

Second: Skjelbred is one of the biggest talents in norway. A fantastic player. But 4.5 millions sounds a lot!
1.5 - 2 million should be enough for Rosenborg to sell him. After all, he wont sign a new deal.
And the best part is that Skjelbred is a huge Newcastle fan.
I would bet all my money that he will score more goals alone, than Smith/Ameobi combined.
I have said it before, his a mix of Batty and Lee and would adapt pretty soon to PL..
A suberb signing if we can get him.

  • 20 Michael // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:15

As much as I dont think Sholas good enough for Newcastle a few people on here need to wise up when it comes to questioning his commitment to Newcastle. He delayed hip surgery to play for us for a long time and despite his ‘lazy’ looking style that doesnt mean hes actually being lazy. Im not defending him in terms of quality because I agree we need better, but in terms of commitment I dont think he should be questioned at all.

  • 21 GraemeR // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:16

KK needs to get these two wasters into the office and ask them if they are actually pleased with their own performances or even effort. I cant imagine either of them having the balls to say that they have been trying.

  • 22 Tom Thumb // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:16

Sell em both for whatever you can get. This preseason was the perfect chance for both of them to shine (like Darren Bent at Spurs).
Hull sounds like a great place for Smith, and Norwich for Ameobi. If we can net $5m for the two you have to take it, given the high wages they are both pulling in.

  • 23 Clarke_19_rangers // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:17

Dc magpie : R U MAD???????? WHAT HAVE U BEEN SMOKIN??????
DIEGO??? i would be surprised if he signed for man-u never mind us! werder would never let him go!
get Smith and Amadonkey out NOW “KING” KEV! What a waste of our money

  • 24 Bmore // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:18

    They were bloodty awful!!

Our midfield looked clue less because these 2 nupties never ran beyond the defence, never tried to stretch them or move to create space for someone else.

Unless we get forwards in the team who are willing to work hard - then no matter which creative CM we have - they will be ineffective.

Must admit - I think Guthrie looked a good tidy player - seems a bargin. The spider shows promise too!

  • 25 GraemeR // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:19

OK after Colloconi we need Derdiyok (for Smith and Ameobi), Moutinho (for Emre), Larrson (for Emre), Inler (for Butt) and Burdisso (for Rozenhal and Ramage)

i think where stuck with them what other club is going to pay the wages that there on, they will just sit back and run down their contract

  • 30 sirjasontoon // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:23

    Hope so decent player.

Shola would struggle in the fizzy pop lge.

the day we get rid ov these two is the day you will see newcastle united improve

    personly im better then shola

what was the point in playing them /how my shots did we have? we neva even looked like scoreing

why not play kasenga lua up front /i went to school with him an played up front with him for benfield and hes a very good player

also i was impresed with jonas looks quick
WE HAVE GOT THE SMALLEST TEAM IN THE LEAUGE AND WE NEED A LOT OF SINGNINGS
ATT CARDAZO OR SOMEONE ELSE GOOD IN AIR
    MID TURAN OR INLA
    LB BUDDISO

  • 37 pontus // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:33

Ameobi sure get rid of him but smith needs to stay!! Give him a break he will do better trust me. you just need patience, wich is something we newcastle fans dont look to have very much of. besides he wasent worse then any one else last season. taylor, butt, geremi, milner, cascapa etc did you think these players were superstars last season and are good enough for the squad?
dont axe him just because he is a smudge:)

  • 38 Dondatta13 // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:34

Toon1978, I wouldnt feel too sorry for Shola. He’s lived the dream mate. How many people do you know who would kill to play in that team? He even played with Shearer, how many people will be able to say that!

He’s lived the dream, got payed well but it obviously isnt working out, time for him to jog on (pun intended)

  • 39 Big Ricks Black Nd White Army // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:36

even i am better than shola ameobi and im a goalkeeper, i probably have a better touch and a better finish than him, im probably better all around than him

  • 40 sirjasontoon // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:36

I agree get him and smith off the wage bill and get some hungry strikers in that can score.

  • 41 Black and White Blood // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:37

    What times kick off tomorrow..?

Keegan said he’ll not be playing Spiderman for obvious reasons….Oh, man…our squad is visibly short of numbers.

After yesterdays game, I would be happy if we signed the SJP ball boys, anything to bluster the squad…God, if things stay the same, we might have to play them!

  • 42 hgjfkd // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:37

TO PLAY FOR NEWCASTLE I WOULD GIVE MY LEFT ARM

  • 43 Matt // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:38

There was an interview with Roeder on Sky this morning saying how high he rates Shola but Norwich can’t afford the fee we’re asking.

Shame that both don’t go as it would free up a space for a new striker and keep our wage budget in check.

  • 44 hgjfkd // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:39

  • 45 Black and White Blood // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:41

  • 46 hgjfkd // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:41

BY THE WAY DID HUGO VIANA HAVE A RELESE CLAUSE IN HIS CONTRACT BECAUSE HE WAS A DECENT PLAYER AND MOVED ON FOR NOTHING HE WAS GIVING NO TIME TO SETTLE
AT LEST HE SCORD A FEW GOALS ANY WAYS AND HAD A GOOD FREE KICK

  • 47 Tom // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:44

Hugo was on loan at various clubs for a couple of seasons, Valencia and Sporting I believe, before leaving for approximately 1.5 million. I agree though, I never thought he was given enough of a chance, unfortunately!

  • 48 shearer4pm // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:44

Big Ricks Black Nd White Army - even though this is prob true its a lil disrespectful lol

    IVE GOT THE SOLUTION
i think loan smith and ameobi to norwich, let them do well in the championship like chopra did, then sell em to the mackems for 5m a peice badda bing badda boom

norich can spend the would be transfer fees that they cant afford to pay on the wages, they increase the value of our players and sunderland get two crappy players ;)

  • 49 Big Ricks Black Nd White Army // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:44

  • 55 lezb // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:52

I watched the game on a feed without commentary and just watching the game I thought Smuge was playing in a deep mid field role ,never once did he create space or attempt to get into a scoring position,as for Stroller Ambleoso words fail me .Neither player must have a shred of shame to turn in that type of performance.Time to take a long hard look at them selves.

  • 56 keltik // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:52

Reading boss Steve Coppell is resigned to losing England full-back Nicky Shorey, with an unnamed Premier League club set to return with an improved bid in the next few days. (Press Association, 1850 BST)

Do you think that could be NUFC? think they might want to make a double signing over this weekend, that would be amazing. I think if all this collocini talk is true someone like Shorey will add a bit more Prem experience to our defence.

Sirjasontoon – Yeah, I’d possibly go along with putting Smith out on loan, but Ameobi, who would really have him, one day spent training and they would realise what a monumental cock-up they’d made and send him straight back address to sender….

  • 63 domtoon // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:58

Is this skjelbred actually any good? According to wiki, he’s only scored 3 goals in 35 games. Not exactly blowing my skirt up. I know he’s young, but I’ve never seen him play - comments??

  • 64 Big Ricks Black Nd White Army // Aug 2, 2008 at 20:00

If Shola left now, he might, just might save face and be given a luke warm reception should he be a guest of the club in years to come.

The problem is he has no intention of going. Thus the bad feelings towards him getting stronger and more intense.

The longer he stays the more he will be hated

sick of hearing about that useless article shola,
the quicker he leaves the better.
understand we,ve got a small squad, and this will only happen if a good enough signing comes in this window.
i disagree with some comments on here about his commitment, his commitment is to his pay packet.
he had a good opportunity at stoke to show what he was made of,but he completely ballsed it up.why? because he,s been onto a good thing with the toon for years.his lifestyle is funded and he only has to turn up to training.
if shola had any ambition as a footballer he would have left for first team football by now.
he seems to have his speech rehearsed every year, must score more etc..etc..
shola amoebi in my opinion was never going to make it as a forward,i,ve always thought he would have made a good defensive midfielder in the patrick viera mould.

dondatta u r right the more he stays the more grieve we will give him, i think it was like 2 years or something since ameobi last scored wasnt it, and i think it was against wigan

  • 83 Tommy K // Aug 2, 2008 at 20:22

I think your all a little critical of Shola, remember when he was playing with injections when we had no fit strikers. He has done a lot for this club. Yes we all know hes not good enough, but surely hes ok as a back-up striker with injury prone Viduka and Owen.

As for Smith he doesn’t even look like a footballer anymore, i dont think hes ever recovered since he badly broke his leg, i think hes worse than Gui’varch and Anderson atm lol.

  • 84 Toon1978 // Aug 2, 2008 at 20:22

Robertsa i dont think we have enough players in the squad to do something like that. I’m not keen on Cuellar anyway after the Boumsong saga. Its was enough to put me off for life.

Ameobi will go to norwich for about £1 million - that’s more than he’s worth. Everyone agrees smith is useless but we’ve actually no chance of unloading him - thanks to the megabucks freddie agreed to pay him.
I agree that there’s absolutely no point in playing shola in these friendlies. He doesn’t want to be here so keep him fit and get rid.

  • 92 Toon1978 // Aug 2, 2008 at 20:34

I think the potential signing of Colocinni have everyone including myself expecting top drawer signing again ie Moutinho, Veloso. These guys are a litle out of reach until we can get into Europe. I do however think Dirdyok would be a likely signing.

  • 93 Dondatta13 // Aug 2, 2008 at 20:34

So Shola played with injections, Big deal man. Anybody on this blog would have done the same (IMO). I know I would have.

Tommy K, im not having a go here but have you been watching him play? I dont get it? I honestly hand on heart dont see how anyone can seriously say “we all know hes not good enough, but surely hes ok as a back-up striker ” Most of us dont think he’s good enough as back up striker.

Gui’varch is a 1998 world cup winner lol (yes, he actually has a world cup winners medal!?!) … how do these people get to where there going in life?

Yes i whole heartldly agree with issue of Smith and Shola- watch them hurts- as it did yesterday=

but i also think we should have a real discussion about Milner- i think we should sell him- the boy is very poor as a talent- he has a great shot on him- but nothing else really his crossing yesterday was crap- he cant beat a man- and he is not really intelligent with the ball either-

he shouldnt be ahead of Duff or Nzogs- in his current form- and i dont think zogs should play left back anymore- i hate it when he plays there- (fcuking fat sam)

  • 99 Toon1978 // Aug 2, 2008 at 20:44

Punk Skunk he would be a quality signing IF NUFC give him the right guidance. If they can do that i believe he could be a top drawer player who would end up a regular in the first 11. He would be more a signing for the future and getting a few games with Owen would be perfect for him.

  • 118 Toon Andy // Aug 2, 2008 at 21:09

Ameobi has been a decent player for us. Nothing more than decent, but he’s done enough to justify applause. He had a fantastic goalscoring rate under Roeder, when we were really short of strikers for long periods of time, and he had lots of potential before that. If he hadn’t had this recurring hip problem, perhaps he’d have gone on to be a big hit and regularly show what he did against Barcelona in the Champions League.

As it is, I agree that Ameobi needs to move on. As has been mentioned, I love his strong feelings for the club and think he was good for us in the past, but nowadays he’s a Championship player and the priceless ~2 years he’s lost through injury (and the yard of pace) won’t be replaced - time to move on, a Championship club paying £2m would be welcomed (Ipswich seem flush suddenly and were linked before - any chance there?)

Having said that, I wouldn’t want to lose Shola and Smith, as it would leave us desperately short. This is why, as the article rightly highlights, it would be good to have seen how ready Zamblera is.

With the time left in the window, do we have the chance to sell Shola and Smith AND buy replacements along with the other players we need? I don’t think so, so maybe it’s best to concentrate on the attacking midfielder and left-sided centre back we need in order to make sure we have a good squad. Then, if Martins, Owen and Viduka can get ready for the new campaign then at least we are in good shape.

    Given/Harper/Krul; Enrique/Bassong, Coloccini/Cacapa, Faye/Taylor, Beye/Geremi; N’Zogbia/Duff, Butt, NEW AM/Guthrie, Gutierrez/Milner; Owen/Martins, Viduka/Carroll/Ameobi

    Doesn’t look so bad…

At least Ameobi has committed himself to score goals in the past. KK can loan out Alan Smith to Hull City or else for him to find his goal instinct again.

Both Smith (especially) and Ameobi are both a financial liability and a massive liability on the pitch.
Neither are within a bull’s roar of what we need and need to be replaced ASAP and culled and cut our losses.

I couldn’t give a rat’s posterial orrifice if they were given away as any replacement would give us more hope and get them off the wage bill.

  • 134 Liam-NUFC // Aug 2, 2008 at 23:06

Thank god this was eventually brought up. Smith is just simply not good enough for us. Big Sam and KK have given him chance after chance and for a ‘prolific’ attack-minded player to not of scored a goal apart from a goal against Sampdoria in a pre-season friendly is a disgrace.
I’ve followed NUFC for many years and I am baffled to see Ameobi has not been sold by now. Fair enough he has scored some important goals here and there and I know he is our 2nd all-time leading goalscorer in Europe but I feel for a professional footballer, he is unable to run without the ball never mind with it. He stumbles over his own feet! I’ve read a few comments here and people are mentioning £3M for him but I think that eventually we will be that desperate to get rid of him we’ll send him out on loan again and have to wait another season to get rid of him. What I say is and in no way am I defending our former versions of Laurel & Hardy. Boumsong and Bramble but to be fair they had one terrible season and one by one they were out. Manager after manager have persistantly stuck by Ameobi and maybe it’s because we didn’t have the funds but we still play him even though he has been terrible for 2-3 seasons now. Another example would be Albert Luque. He was at Newcastle for what, a season or 2 and he was sold. I hope KK reads this because I speak for geordies worldwide when I say… Ameobi and Smith should never have the priviledge of wearing the black and white stripes of Newcastle United again.

The more first team football they get now the less they will get in the season. Smith is obviously being told he is only going to be used as a striker. That way He cant complain when we have a full midfield and no place for him. As a striker he can be dropped to make way for Owen, Martins and Dukes or Carroll so whilst he may be on the big bench he wont be coming on unless injury strikes…..Which is why we still need another striker Kev! Gudjohnnson!!!!!!

  • 141 ca66st // Aug 3, 2008 at 0:26

Shola has had plenty of opportunities to prove himself as a Newcastle player and, apart from a brief spell under Roeder, he has failed to impress. I think the thing that frustrates many fans is that he seems to have had a number of opportunities this summer to leave (West Brom, Ipswich, Stoke) and he’s still here - that just angers fans that want to get rid of deadweight and get some players in who can add quality to the side.

As for Smith, he’s not a striker, he’s not a midfielder - i don’t even know how to describe him!! Anyone thinking he has something to offer and will come good - please watch a replay of the Toon v Chelsea game - first half we were decent, then Viduka goes off, Smith comes on the team loses all shape and Smith runs around like a headless chicken , gets in everyones way and contributes to the two goals! Seriously that game should be enough to convinve anyone that Smith is utterly useless!!

I have a feeling niether will leave and that just annoys me, i really don’t want to sit at SJP next year and have the dread that Smith is going to be one of the options to come on from the bench - the guy is terrible .

Rant over, don’t normally comment but these two get me that worked up i couldn’t help myself!!

  • 142 tim krul // Aug 3, 2008 at 0:29

we need to get rid og both of them… pronto. we should be able to raise 5-7 mil from both of them which can go towards paying for 1 decent replacement. doesn’t even need to be that good, just back up for owen/oba/viduka. i reckon kevin doyle would be a good option. we could get him for 5 mil and he’d probably be happy to wait for his chance, knowing that he’ll probbly play every other game due to vidukas poor fitness record. his wages would easily be covered by smith and sholas. who knows, maybe we could even swap shola plus cash for him. we just need somone who has a bit of movement (steven hawking has better movement than shola) who can also score goals. aside from that, we desperately need a creative midfielder and although perhaps unrealistic, we should push the boat out for arshavin. way overpriced but potentially the difference between breaking into the top 4/6 and finishing in the bottom half again. he IS that influential. Guthrie looks good, butt too similar to wor nicky… perhaps his long term replacement. another left back is also needed, shorey or warnock perhaps. in my opinion, a creative midfileder has to be our top priority though

  • 143 TooooooN // Aug 3, 2008 at 0:38

I havent watch our pre-season but when i read the highlights - i never get thru alan smith nor ameobi involvement in the games simple because they are not good enough.

Ameobi- we gave him LOTS of chances to a championship player. cut his wages and let him play for us not because of the money.

Alan Smith-definitely one of the worst striker we had. never score. last he score was pre-season last year! never a good midfielder, can’t even find a room to shoot and always a waste on our starting eleven because he doesn’t involve much. i remember last season we start winning under keegan when we start dropping Alan Smith! i rather we play 5 in midfield than playing alan smith on the team.

as for a striker Diego Milito is avaliable for 14M a natural goalscorer and can provide something different than Owen and Martins ..

Smith cant give somethinb more than a squad play with high wage , and shola complete waste of time !!

“This is the fittest I’ve been in a few years, and hopefully, that can translate into playing more games. I need to improve my form.”

If he is at his fittest, then he needs to leave now, obviously a league one player.

Shola and Smithy both need to go imo. At the same time have a bit of respect for Shola. Yes he isn’t good enough and yes he never fulfilled his potential. But when we needed him he was there playing to the best that HE could. He never complained, sulked or bitched about anything to the press or anyone else. That’s more than you can say for a lot of players. And as for all of you who claim to be a better player than him get real. You’re all shite players. That’s why you have time for writting stuff in blogs and not out there playing for a respectable team.

And for those of you who claim you’d play for free ….. that’s just what u say now when u know you’ll never play for the toon. If u were actually in that position I’m 100% sure you’d like a bit of dosh.

The crap players we have are not half as irritating as you know it all, i’m a better player than so n so, rude wankers.

To be honest I think Shola has been plague by injuries. Remember the season when Shearer retired? When Glenn Roeder was in charge? Shola was fantastic. We were unbeaten in our final 9 games that season

Ed: what is the point of writing this article?…

so you think people (including you) didnt already criticise them enough in here, so you want to invite more?

every Toon fans know how good they are and criticise them every day in here, what is the point of writing more articles to criticise them more?…

and by the way, the club is going to sell Ameobi and consistently link with strikers…so there is a chance that if we sign the new striker, he could be Smith’s replacement

at the end of the day, Shola is a Geordie…Smith is still with us and both of them are willing to give their all in our shirt, shouldnt we give them a bit of support (even tho we know how good they are) rather than writing more articles to invite criticism every day

In my opinion smith going nowhere for the same reason that we’ve struggled to sell on ameobi, and who know’s the way it going we might be stick with shola for another season.

have been saying for a while there’s no way smith will be moved on, no one from the clubs even mention him have they and with his wage demands and us probably wanting that over priced fee for him back, not a chance. would like to hear your opinions on this chance to ed?

    not just other peoples.

shall we make an offer to REQUELME ?

if we signs coluccini than we can use him and gutierrez as a help to persuade REQUELME come to the toon.

at the age of 30 REQUELME can sign a 3 year contract and can still be a hit in england and europe

ameobi has become a bramble up front, lets hope he bags one tonight and impresses some of the poor schmos that are apparently interested.. we REALLY need to offload shola!

Anthony: at the end of the day, shola still sucks and all of smiths hard work and energy on the pitch isnt enough
