Skuy Sports is reporting that Newcastle United have confirmed that talks to sign Fabricio Coloccini are indeed at an ‘advanced stage’.

Fabricio Colccini - almost a Newcastle player
Reports in Spain last night, that we published here on this site, had claimed that Newcastle had already agreed a deal to bring in the Deportivo La Coruna defender.
The comments from the Argentine’s agent, Marcelo Lombillo, came after Deportivo had rejected an initial offer from Newcastle, which seemed a good one at around €9.5M (euro).
However, it very much looks like the versatile defender will be joining his Argentine team-mate Jonas Gutierrez, who made his Newcastle United debut last night against Hertha Berlin, on Tyneside.
Now all we need is to sign the Argentine left-back and their team-mate Nicolas Burdisso, the Inter Milan left back, and our squad will be in a lot better shape.
It’s just a pity we couldn’t have enticed Pablo Aimar to join us too - but shouldn’t get greedy - you win some you lose some.
A Newcastle club spokesman confirmed to Sky Sports News that while a deal had not yet been completed, talks were continuing and were making positive progress.
Speaking after Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat to Hertha Berlin on Friday, manager Kevin Keegan admitted a new signing was imminent.
Keegan told nufcTV:
“There’s one deal which is ongoing at the moment.”
“Hopefully we’ll have something to tell you over the weekend.”
Kevin also managed to talk to the Shields Gazette today about Coloccini:
“It’s ongoing. I’m hopeful, but it’s not a done deal yet,”
“He’s played for Argentina, and not many bad players play for Argentina.”
There’s no doubt that Coloccini is a good player. and was said to have his best and most consistent season for Deportivo last season when he played around 35 times for the team.
And on the Deportivo fans’ web sites, the fans are not too happy at all, to be losing one of their best players - and that’s always a good sign for the buying club.
He also looked very good playing for Argentina in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and is a no-nonsense and physically strong player.
We think he will be an excellent signing by Keegan, and we need to give Dennis Wise some credit too, if this deal finally goes through, since the Spanish club seem to have put him through the wringer, more than once this week.
Comments welcome.

Now we have got him we should begin to build are team around him and owen. Or at less he should be at the heart of our defence every match!! At least we have a point to build our defence around an essential problem finally solved?

Be completed by monday at the earliest, can’t wait!
I agree JC, we should build the team around him, at least the defence. However, I don’t think Owen can be 100% sure of his place, I personally prefer Martins! Just my preference though!

I am just wondering that we have 3 people involved with transfer dealings, so why do we seem to concentrate on one transfer dealing at a time. I am sure it would possible to araange negotiations between multiple parties when we have multiple personnel in charge of transfer dealings.
11 matt // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:33
great. i’ll believe it when i see it but my gut tells me it’s going through
now burdisso/warnock
skeljbred (sp)
derdiyok, who imo is the only striker we’ve realistically been linked with that would provide a true “foil” for owen and oba. during the euros he was everywhere, and not in a smith/shola way. he was fantastic. i dont think he’ll get us 20 goals a season, not even close, but i’d be willing to bet he knock in a good seven or eight goals and set up twice as many. best attacking purchase we could make.
to round it out, arda turan. then i think we’d be looking on the up, without a doubt. THAT’S a true team overhaul.
12 Bill F SPLASH THE CASH ASH // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:39
Is that him in the pic? What happened to the perm.
Seems to be getting dragged out this signing, makes me nervous when that happens.
13 Edd Case // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:40
Christ, I hope we sign him.
He is by far a better defender than anyone else on our books.
We still need at least one more quality central defender, a right back, a left back AND for crying out loud, a CREATIVE midfielder, in fact, TWO, in case one gets injured.
V D Vaart is heading to Real Madrid, so let’s get in Diego, Kallstrom or someone else like that, otherwise, we might be an improvement on last year, but we’ll be still a million miles away from playing some quality footy.
14 ONEPETERB // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:43
First things first - if we sign him let us see what he is like before we “Build a team around him”. Price paid means nowt , remember Boomsong

16 Tore Torell // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:46
This is great news, we need the lanky defender. I watched the match yesterday, and I have to say that this squad really need an attacking midfielder. I suggest Julio Baptista, he would add a lot to our side. 8m and he’s ours.
Smith and Shola were awful yet again, I honestly hope I never have to watch those two again wearing the Newcastle shirt.
17 toooooonfan // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:47
to be honest i have neve heard ofhim before we were linked but nevertheless he still looks like he could do reasonable job. te thing is we already have faye taylor bassong cacapa beye can also playcentre back what is the need for another one costing 10million
18 Jeff D // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:48
Arda Turan says he wants to stay at Galatasaray for one more season. So that is the end of that one.
19 Alex // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:51
Now that the club have spoken it must surely be in the bag . Now for a midfielder , How about Alonso ? Liverpool are looking to offload him to finance the Barry transfer . Its unlikely that he would come but you never know till you try . Derdiok for the CF position and i would be Very happy . Well you can always dream cant you .

21 JC // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:55
ONEPETERB- if we are paying upward of 10m on him and he has a proven track record. We would need to build our defence around hmi or it was a waste of money!!
22 Ross G // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:56
TWO THNGS TO SAY.
1. I was watching Real Madrid TV (dont ask me why) and they had a select 11 for La Liga last season. Coloccini was starting CB.
2. Im surprised you think we are after or could sign Burdisso. Firstly he is not a LB he is a CB, but can play there. Also if you kept up to date with the news they have Cordoba, Samuel, Chivu, and now Materazzi out for the season start leavin just Burdisso available, thats why they just signed Ferrari to help there injury crisis. He would be nice but its never gonna happen.
23 Ross // Aug 2, 2008 at 18:57
yas colo is defo a quality player and i think we will have a deal tomorow. i wish we would sell ameobi and smith and get derdyiok. i think andy carroll is 10 times better than ameobi
24 Alex // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:05
Toooooofan what world are you living in . The guy is a world class central defender and you are asking why we need him . Beye is a specialist fullback , Taylor & Bassong are good but still learning , Cacapa is well past his best , cant believe you are asking why.
25 harrier // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:10
I am really excited by this:
“What is interesting is that Newcastle are still following Skjelbred and are preparing to lodge a £4.5m bid for him if their bigger transfer targets slip out of their hands.
“Which is also why Skjelbred is putting off signing a new deal with Rosenborg. He does not want to make things messy if Newcastle or another club he might find interesting comes in for him before the end of the transfer window.â€
from the chronicle. If skjelbred is our fallback at 4.5mill - who are our top targets??
26 boater // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:11
I think we are all a bit daft when it comes to central defenders…. how many on here are so very positive about this deal because they have ACTUALLY seen him play.
1) Bassedas (although there was a rumour about mistaken identity) played for Argentina so I hope KK is basing this on more than just those national caps.
2) This is what we do at the toon - we sign ’saviour’ defenders; Boumsong, Marcelino, Dumas, Goma, Rozenhal, Cacapa and then build hate campaigns around them after a few mistakes…. THIS IS WHAT WE DO…
oh yeah then we all get excited about the next ’saviour’… the southern press feeds off this and talks about the toon’s awful defense…. continue, continue ad nauseum….
SO what is the solution?? If we’d defended more as a unit over the years and not singled out scapegoats we would probably have had more success with a couple of the above names….
lesson learned??? I hope so… because rozenhal and cacapa both have caps for very strong national sides and we have thrown them out with the dishwater…
27 Toonboy // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:17
Nicky Shorey will be sold in the next few days??
Is he Toon bound???
28 Tom Thumb // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:21
Hope it’s not the last signing. We need a left back, another central midfielder and a forward.
Sell Smith and Ameobi, maybe even Duff since one good preseason game doesn’t mean he’s back to full form.
The lack of goals is a huge concern right now.
29 LoonyToon // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:23
moving along nicely this one now innit…. v good signing….
wouldnt mind Shorey aswell mind ToonBoy….like him alot and quality at set pieces….something we are slightly lacking at….
30 chuck // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:26
Now that Coloccini is more or less secured who is up next.
Will this be THE big signing or is there any chance of getting a Moutinho or Veloso ?
Whats the point of getting, say Inlar, when for a few bucks more we could have the future of the club,I mean either of the above.
Not saying Inler is not a good player but these two guys are on a different level, young box to box players, can both fill that midfield enginroom role, good passers, we have no one to compare at this time.
Would love to see it happen
31 LoonyToon // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:26
agree with ya boater….we need to give players a chance to settle and not jump on their backs at the first opportunity….
I can remember watching Newcastle at Highbury around 3 years back not long after we signed Boumsong and he had a very good game against Henry, keeping us in it at times…He then made a couple of errors v Manure at St James at the start of the next season and it turned from there…you kind of got the feeling in the ground that people were waiting for a mistake to get on the lads case…unfortunately he didnt have the mentality to recover from that and was shipped out…
32 Michael // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:29
Shorey would be an excellent signing, he shone when reading had their brilliant first season and was still getting a lot of assists in their second season when they were poor. It seems Keegans highest priority is left back so it wouldnt surprise me if we were at least in for him.

34 Liffyourd // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:35
am i the only one who thinks shorey’s useless
the only reason he looked good for reading was because he was an average player in a terrible squad, rather have warnock or nobody tbh
35 boater // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:37
Loonytoon… exactly. It’s true that woodgate stepped up when he was with us but I think others would have done better if the crowd weren’t so nervy and quick to judge… I hope coloccini gets off to a good start because lord help him if he makes some early mistakes…. you can just see the ‘toon’s latest big money flop’ headlines….
Defending is a lot to do with organisation - not just financing big money deals on big names.
I hope we can start to do that more this season.
We need an attacking midfielder… part of me’s expecting a bombshell shearer-style shock signing - i.e. Arshavin or Alonso but if not that we desperately need someone with more craft supplying the forwards than what we have now.
36 normski1930z // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:38
chuck moutinho and veleoso are very different players.. give me the choice and it would be veloso all day long but the big question is would he come and would we pay 18/20 million for him,im not so sure…
37 Toon1978 // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:41
Normski i have to admit i have been a little hasty about Ashley and i think has proved a few critics wrong and i hope he continues to do by purchasing the likes of the players mentioned in the last few days. I think that the defeat against Doncaster and Hertha Berlin has shocked a few at the top of the tree at NUFC and they have realised that signings are needed asap. Lets keep the fingers crossed for now.
38 LoonyToon // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:41
boater…yep..a organised, steady back four is the key…
hopefully we can get a settled back four, who, given a little time to get to know each other will build up a good understanding therefore becoming more solid in the process…
someone to link the midfield and attack now for me…not sure who like however I am sure KK will have someone in mind…he did say two signings didnt he the other day…its pretty obvious who one is….

42 WIGAZ // Aug 2, 2008 at 19:54
Well lets hope it’s not another modric/aimar fiasco, we need this lad he’s quality! hope shorey is toon bound as he’s just what we need, although the bull is good young player still makes mistakes at the vital times. Shorey would help him become a better player as well as challeging himself to get in the team & stay there! i still say we need AM & diego would be gr8 buy if he’d come like, big if! CF wouldn’t go a miss as the usual suspects are injured now! Gomez for me like but derdi may be cheaper option.

Geordie Spiderman….???????
So 9 mill on boumsong, 7mill on marcelino, 5.5 mil on bramble don’t show a willingness to spend big on defenders to you????
This is not a joke…. NUFC have spent more on central defenders than any other team in the premiership since 1994/5….. other than Chelsea and Man united - both of which spent up to 20mil on one signing each.
If this is a lack of willingness to spend on defense - then I am finally going mad.

The fact that Keegan and a ‘club spokesman’ have gone public with this.
Either it is actually in the bag, minus medical or something, or they’re nuts saying anything.
Going public just means we are saying, “hey everyone, Coloccini is available”.

Forget about Ribery, Diego and players of that calibre, they would never sign for Toon at this stage.
Baptista should be a target, to strengthen the midfield are is far more urgent than up front. Our attackers never gets the ball if we play Butt, Faye, Geremi etc in midfield, so buying more attackers before bringing in someone to provide them would make no sense to me.

REALISTICALLY
- Pavuluychenko
- Arshavin - tho probably wants champ lge footy
- arda- skillful turkish/ galatasary winger/AM excellent aswell as creative ? goals goals goals something that none of our midfeild have in them
- gokhan ilner/ double of GARRY BARRY -amazing football wise
- Zhirkow excellent left or right back - versatile attacking gr8 crosser wot more could you want.
- Or WARNOCK
- Get cacapa out hes only good when hes confident
Beye is gr8 player and faye is quite solid to
jose enrique is not ready yet but could be good in time.
so sign shorey 4 competition

“I think that the defeat against Doncaster and Hertha Berlin has shocked a few at the top of the tree at NUFC and they have realised that signings are needed asap.”
Well, I beg to differ. Two losses in pre-season doesn’t “shock” the club into suddenly start buying left, right and centre. Just because a lot of us fans are very unpatient and worried with regards to our squad and have been shouting abuse towards the board (backed by the press) doesn’t mean the club have been doing nothing. I agree that we still need a few additions and it’s certainly frustrating that we haven’t signed more GOOD players…yet.
However - in my opinion - it’s very likely that the club has be working on numerous deals for a long time - but the “hit-rate” in todays football are not that great, especiallty not for a club without European football on offer.
Nonetheless, I do think/hope we’ll manage to sign a few more GOOD players before the window slams shut.
80 Rob // Aug 2, 2008 at 23:54
It does not matter which defenders we bring in, unless we have a forward line who can hold the ball up when it get played up to them, and a midfield who can pass and move and have enough quality in terms of touch and skill then we put too much pressure on our defence as things break down far to often when we win the ball going forward. If you watch our games in the past few years they are mainly played in the middle of the pitch, we need to play more of the game game higher up in the oppositions half. To do this we need midfielder who at a minimum are so comfortable with accepting the ball and they can 1st time pass with ease if needed. This is what we have been lacking. Guthrie is a start, and its obvivious we have been missing this as he is fairly limited in attacking sense but he looks good in our team as his touch and passing is pretty good. something none of the other mids have.
unless we have this thought the middle of the pitch we will continue to struggle when we lose the ball in poor ares of the field and get hit on counter attacks with our defence exposed. put Man U’s whole defence in with our midfiled from last year I doubt they would have done that much better than what we had.

jonny who Garry Barry don’t you mean Gareth LOL and how is he realistic at 18mill and Asharvin at 20mill your in another world. Skjebred is around 4mill and Sergio Garcia who’s around 5 if we can’t derdiyok or buy Adrien from Sporting a good youngster.

Cacapa was also a great player loved by the Lyon fans. Let’s hope this deals completes and turns out good.
We should continue targetting players that no one else is bidding for. And looking at the market now, Zhirkov, Arshavin and Arda are still available if we would pull out the chequebook.

Hopefully he continues his form with us. Have seen too many big money moves with huge expectations ending up in flops.

I really hope we’re not in for Skjelbred! Won’t make it in the PL…

we need strikers, ASAP, if possible, 2 of them!
bcoz apparently in case we’re playing a 4-3-3 formation, then clearly we don’t have enough strikers to do so. owen=injury prone, oba=lost inspiration, viduka=lost his head, totally waste buying him last season, too old, too slow too much injuries, should just retire and sleep on the bed. guess that’s all the strikers that we have, and apparently, they are all not very promising due to problems with injuries etc. carroll is good, but just not good enough yet, and we can’t be challenging a top six spot with NO strikers!
ps: smith and shola and not considered as strikers, they are more like spectators or a clown juggling their own b@#LS if you like..

The Toon look like a road accident victim. They have reasonable arms and limbs but its the vital organs that need sorting out.

Ok…Ok…. Its getting close to the end of the Business day and still nothing anywhere confirming that Curly has scribbled on the dotted line!! Is it possible that he has watched both poor displays this week and now has done a U-turn? God I hope not!!
