The Swiss International Eren Derdiyok has been linked with Newcastle United since he said in late April, that he would just love to join Newcastle United so he could play alongside Newcastle captain Michael Owen.

Derdiyok - let’s hope we can this player
The player, who is of Turkish origin but born in Basel, Switzerland, and only recently turned 20, was linked with Turkish side Fenerbehce just over a week ago.
We understand that a transfer fee had been accepted by his Swiss club FC Basel, and that Fenerbahce were allowed to negotiate personal terms with the player.
However, we’ve heard nothing since and that deal is reported to have fallen through, and there’s no mention of the player at all on the official Fenerbehce site.
His continued availability is probably why Newcastle are again interested.
It may also be because of the appalling form of strikers Smith and Ameobi in pre-season games, that is forcing Keegan to bring in another striker.
Keegan and Newcastle were initially put off by the £6M fee, and were willing to offer £3M, but it would be interesting to understand what fee Basel accepted from Fenerbehce.
It looks like Keegan is considering moving back in with reports of a £5M offer in the offing, in an attempt to get this impressive young striker on Tyneside.
Although just 20 years old, Derdiyok has an excellent record of 14 goals in just 12 games for the Swiss U19 and U21 sides and received his first full cap against England at Wembley this February - and scored a goal.
He has played 44 times for his home town club Basel, with 11 goals and stands an impressive 6′3″ tall.
As we have reported a number of times he went on to become the youngest player at the Euro2008 tournament this summer, and looked a very good youngster in the 3 games he appeared in.
We think this boy would be a great signing for us, and it seems he would be only too willing to come, which is also a good sign.
What’s another £1M or £2M to get a player in like this?
Of course once we got him, we could also sell Alan Smith at the best price we could get for him, and maybe even get Eren’s transfer fee back in the deal.
Good deal - if we can do it.
Comments welcome.

quality signing.
ive been saying for a few weeks that if we signed coloccini, derdyok and inler we’d be set for the season.
could be coming true
6 dougnufc // Aug 2, 2008 at 12:34
If King Kev gave me a chance to tell him 5 players that I want (realistically)
I would want:
-Larsson
-Inler
-Colocinni
-Warnock
-Derdiyok
7 Ed Harrison // Aug 2, 2008 at 12:35
Nick - agree - that would be great - but it looks unlikely for Inler - but you never know.
8 toon1978 // Aug 2, 2008 at 12:36
Get him now along with Colocinni,Burdisso, and we should have a sneaky little go at Veloso just to get the blood rushing for the coming season. CMON Ashley you can do this break the bank, get the players, get us into europe then you will see the money.
9 Tom from Aus // Aug 2, 2008 at 12:38
Would be a very good signing for us and a possible replacement for dukes.
And our other swiss target gokhan inler is apparently not for sale.

12 Tom // Aug 2, 2008 at 12:51
As I said on a previous blog, signing this guy would be excellent, just the sort of player we need; he can link with our little quick strikers, and also get on the ends of the crosses Jonas will be whipping in!
Kev, get him in!
13 jettson // Aug 2, 2008 at 12:55
would be a great signing, young, keen, eager wants to pull on the black & white shirt!!! all the ingredients u need with KK as the man to get the best out of him, remember Rob Lee!!?? much better prospect than smith and ameobi, both of whom have no quality! best shot of both asap!! then lets get a CREATIVE midfielder, someone who wil create and get you 8-10 goals a season, but who???? c’mon the toon, only another 3-4 signings from getting close to where we should be!!
14 Mac // Aug 2, 2008 at 12:56
dougnufc You read my mind mate they are the 5 players i would have and they wouldn’t cost the world. I’d say about 25 million for the lot.
Sell Smith and Ameobi for about 4 million Duff for 3 and cappaca for about 1, in my books that about 8 million off the price/ Ashley stumps up 18 million of his own money, Then watch us fly up the table

16 John B // Aug 2, 2008 at 12:59

Would be the perfect foil for owen / oba. Would mean no more smith or shola which is a must.
I would go as far to say that we will not win 1 game this season with either smith or (L)ameobi up front.

Not to mention the fact that Smith and Ameobi are just simply not good enough.

If the Coloccini deal is wrapped up today i would like to see Warnock & Skjelbred follow him in. Then i will be content with what we have signed.
Gutierrez looked the part yesterday, will be much better once we have our proper strikers in. Guthrie was ok, made a couple of really good passes.
37 dacvid toon // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:41
news from norway is that newcastle are after making an enquiry into buying skjelbred.not a bad player.really full of energy and he,s a newcastle fan to boost.hope we get colo in today.its dragging out too long for my liking.derdyok seems like a good signing.especially after suffering through that game lastnight.smith and ameobi were awful.thought duff did really well when he came on.

didn’t think derdiyok looked that special tbh
39 valle // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:46
Guys i dont think Skjelbred would be the AM KK wants for the first team, he would be one of those for the future that KK talked about bringing in, in addition to the 3 first teamers he wanted… With De La Red ruling himself out, it seems our AM target will be Källström.
40 sirjasontoon // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:46
Looks a good player to me..hope we can wrap some of these up pronto.
Happy days : )
41 Alex // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:46
Derdiyok would be an excellent signing then we could off load Ameobi to the first club that want him .Even 1 million would be a good deal for the useless git , he came through the academy so any fee is profit . Is Barnetta any good cant say i noticed him much at the Euros ?
42 Spyro // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:48
Barnetta is ok, he was average at best in the euro’s but he is a talent for the future if under the right coach, manager etc.
I agree Alex, Ameobi is an awful player who i have never rated. Some people on here should stop defending him just because he came through our academy, if your not good enough your not good enough, simple.
43 sirjasontoon // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:49
Alex agree mate shola and Smudger should be offloaded ASAP.
Feel really sorry for Smith as had really high hopes when he was signed now i am now resigned to the fact that he is a pile of steaming cow dung.
44 Spyro // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:50
@ Valle
personally i hope we buy Skjelbred and not an AM. I prefer two CM’s to a diamond midfield any day.
45 sirjasontoon // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:52
Spyro..look at it this way..Shola had the luxury of learning and training with the master Shearer not many players have that opportunity..I just think he must have been asleep at the training ground as he picked up nothing from him.
Shocking player let him go on a free transfer.
46 Pete // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:55
I’d still have Larsson. Geremi looked diabolical last night - I know it was hot but that’s no excuse for forgetting how to pass the big white round thing to a man in a black and white shirt
47 Spyro // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:56
slap a 2 million price tag on him and sell him to the first bidder, if a no show occurs, then bring it down to 1.5 million
48 valle // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:56
spyro… i know mate, but if the rumors have some truth we will be after an AM… But as with all rumors they might as well be made up… Time will tell i guess
49 Hertz // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:56
The problem is nobody wants smith and ameobi.
If both of them dont go i cant see MA willing to spend more on another striker.
U gotta know their wages cost us around 90k per week(nt sure about that), imagine how many hungry youngsters can we sign with that kind of wages.
Ps:its over 24 hours since KK said he wishs to announce a new player but yet nothing happened. Fingers crossed!
50 Spyro // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:58
larsson would be a decent signing and i would like him here. However, i do not think we will go after him as a RM/AM is not going to be seen as essential by the NUFC staff. It seems we are only buying just enough to provide competition for all places.
51 steve // Aug 2, 2008 at 13:59
I reckon we need to improve the coaching as well as bringing in better players - the whole team seem to just stand about waiting for something to happen rather than running into space and trying to create opportunitys - surely thats the idea of playing attacking football.
As for KK’s statements about being the fittest team!!! we look very leggy last night and Hertha took advantage by continually catching us on the break where our wooden legged midfield either wouldn’t or couldn’t be arsed to get back
52 BenjiToon // Aug 2, 2008 at 14:00
Valle - think you have underestimated Skjelbred. He has Champions League experience, and was rated as one of the top talents in world football by that Italian magaine…can’t remember what its called but they’re usually right.
I think he could and would be one for now, and just happens to be young - so has years ahead of him. Derdiyok is the one I’d be more concerned about - he hasn’t played as many games at senior level.
53 Toon_swede // Aug 2, 2008 at 14:01
Saw him against my beloved IFK gothenburg last week. He was totally invicible. the game ended with a 1-1 draw. Im not so sure about this one..
54 jeff // Aug 2, 2008 at 14:06
Lets get some action going in the transfer market….its far too quiet!!!! Im not wanting big named players because in the past they havent delivered but lets get some quality in…….we are desperate for a quality midfielder….Just my opinion
55 Alex // Aug 2, 2008 at 14:08
I think Smudger should maybe be given this season to try and turn things around .After all he did star in the Leeds team that got to the CL semis and scored a load of goals .He was used in the wrong position both at manure and last season something i will never understand . Maybe Keegan could kick start his carrier with us Viduka was his strike partner at Leeds so obviously he needs that sort of player to play off . ALthough he will never be as good as OWEN or Martins he would offer a different option
56 Shearer#1 // Aug 2, 2008 at 14:11
I’d get rid of Smith, Ameobi, Geremi & bring in 1 striker, 1 creative mid & 1 left back. With Van Der Vaart signing for Real Madrid I think we might get Baptista.
57 BenjiToon // Aug 2, 2008 at 14:12
Alex - I remember when Smith first signed last season. We all said what a committed player he was…no matter what poisition he looked like the kind of personality we wanted. Then he was messed around, moved around too much and left out the team.
Its worth remembering that when Man U demolished a very good Roma side in the CL he led the line…BUT he didn’t do that alongside Shola. He needs to play better with someone who has trickery and movement next to him - Martins maybe?
I certainly wouldn’t sell him yet. This season at least.
Shola on the other hand…..!
58 gorskino10 // Aug 2, 2008 at 14:15
skijelbred and dirdiyok would be amazing plus coloccini I would be happy if we get them 3
59 BenjiToon // Aug 2, 2008 at 14:15
The problem with Baptista is a) he won’t come cheap, b) he has a duff game about every 4th match, c) he’s not progressed since he left Sevilla.
That said he scored goals on loan at Arsenal and may like Keegans style of play. Worth a punt if not too expensive.
60 Black and White Blood // Aug 2, 2008 at 14:15
I’ve just looked up the definition for the word ‘Greedy’
It reads: Shola Ameobi.
if nothing else, Ameobi deserves as much crap as we can throw at him – I find it really difficult to swallow that a local lad who was given a tremendous opportunity to play for he home town club has done bugger all! Ok, if he was simply not good enough, but it’s the fact that I’ve never seen him give more then 65% effort in any game! He’s a little, sorry ‘lanky’ lazy AHole!!!!

64 Michael // Aug 2, 2008 at 14:49
Heres a thought for a striker we could get for next to nothing. Pizarro from Chelsea. Similar type of player to Viduka but not injured nearly as much. Presumably Chelsea would be willing to let him go at a low price.
65 Bill F SPLASH THE CASH ASH // Aug 2, 2008 at 14:53

70 Dan the Fan // Aug 2, 2008 at 15:23
I’m probably the only person who thinks this, but for some reason I think Alan Smith could still have an important role at the club.
Fair enough, his form is poor (to say the least), but I still think there is something there, that with the right attention and minutes on the field, could be nurtured. I think with him, its a mental game - not scoring, the fear of another major injury etc. Keegan is the right man to turn him around.
Unlike Ameobi, Smith has some inherent skill hidden under the bad form, and I think this season, with a well drilled and organised team around him, this will come to light.
Keep him on the bench for now, but give him a run out when due - his attitude and motivation can never be questioned.
As for last night, well, it’s only a friendly; a chance to see what works where. I’m not worried, it’ll take time for the team to gel and I feel we’re definitely moving in the right direction.

If he is available for £5m. or less okay.
Theres a chance he may develope into a decent player, but not sold on him nor Inler.
As far as Larsson and Skjelbred are concerned, do we really need two more midfielders of questionable talent, simply because they are young or one of them is a NUFC fan.
Say £9m. for both, why not throw a few more million (easy for me to say)and sign a real talent.
Moutinho or Veloso, makes more sense to me.
