News today that Reading boss Steve Coppell is expecting Nicky Shorey to leave and join a Premier League team next week, after receiving a new bid for the defender.
Nicky Shorey - a Premier Club has bid for player
Reading were relegated to the Championship on the last day of last season, and have today said that an offer has been received (and rejected) for the twice-capped English International.
But Coppell fully expects that club to come back with an improved offer, and Coppel seems willing to let Shorey move on, if a suitable offer is finally received.
The question of course, is that Premier Club Newcastle United?
A bid of £4M from West Ham was rejected out of hand last summer, but the player has continued to be linked with West Ham, Portsmouth, Newcastle and Aston Villa, who all seem to be after a left-back.
Coppell said today:
“To be fair to Nicky Shorey, he has made it clear from this time last year that he would prefer to leave and ply his trade elsewhere.”
“We as a club have an asset and it is a delicate balancing act between trying to satisfy the demands of the player and also trying to satisfy the demands of the football club.”
“We had a good talk yesterday, there was a little bit of interest last week and the chances are he will be gone by next week. I am 60-40 convinced that he will be gone.”
The left-back is in the final year of his current contract at Reading, so it leaves the Reading club in a poor bargaining position, whether they say so or not.
That’s simply because in a short 12 months, if Nicky wanted to, he could leave Reading for nothing and work a good deal for himself in the process - and there’s nothing the club could do about it.
So in that sense any money they can get for him now would be money in the bank.
Coppell continued:
“The offer was a firm one but we have no need to sell anyone and I’m not going to give anyone away,”
“It has to be a realistic bid in terms of market valuation, and bear in mind that 12 months ago he was coming off the back of playing two games for England against Brazil and Germany.
“I don’t feel disposed to let him go for nothing. I appreciate it is a year on from that particular moment, but as yet the valuation is not what we find acceptable.”
Coppell did not want to comment further on how close the secret bid was to their own valuation of Shorey, and Steve added:
“Two bob is miles away as far as I am concerned. If it is not meeting the valuation then it is a long way away.”
“I have been fairly fair with Shorey and he accepts the situation so clarity would be best for everybody.”
“We are in that ridiculous situation that if nobody comes in for him then he will still be here.”
“I would dearly love him to be playing for us as he is a significant player for us.”
“So there are about three balls up in the air for us and it is unsatisfactory for him, for us and for everybody.”
Shorey took no part in his side’s 1-1 friendly draw with Villa at the Madejski Stadium, and seems to be being wrapped in cotton wool, since it looks likeRreading think a deal is imminent, with this unnamed Premier club.
Could this be Newcastle?
We’ll have to wait and see, but if we can get the player for around £3M we think it could be a good deal - let us know what you think in our latest poll.

Answer: No, it’s Aston Villa. Newcastle are not willing to spend 4m on a fullback now, however I wouldn’t mind Shorey as he is better than Enrique as we speak. Enrique will come good though, but right now Shorey would be my choice.

This guy (shorey) is excellent attacking wise but im not so sure defensively. I do think he would be a great signing at 3M as he is a premiership proven player ( not some spanish/argentinian flop like luque) but i cant see reading letting him go that cheap. Id say 5M at the very least but o well.

RIGHT LADS, I’ll fill you in with what i’ve heard so far off somebody with an apparently very good source. Coloccini is on £35,000 a week. We offered £8.5M for Turan but it got knocked back cause Gala want £10M. We’ve bid £4M for Derdiyok and are therefore leading the race to sign him. We’ve went for an unnamed attacking midfielder (don’t ask, he didn’t know anymore apart from the club’s keeping it under wraps). And also we’ve put in a cheeky £15M bid for Xavi but it’s likely to be rejected, because Barca are having a clear out. Ameobi will be sold once over his injury. Smith plus £5M would be the bid for Cuellar but Rangers don’t want to sell.
Don’t start having a go saying it’s all BS because i’m just telling you what i’ve been told, I hate BS as much as the next person, and I apologise if most of that is already common knowledge.
Personally for the Turan and Derdiyok deals I think we should just cough up the extra £1.5M and £1M respectively.

Was looking at the sum up of all the prem teams transfers and to be honest most teams seem to be struggling. Only one of our rivals that seems to have been successful in market so far is tottenham. considering we have two top quality players in jonas and collocini (hope i havent jinxed this) and two really bright prospects with bassong and guthrie i reckon we’re doing pretty damn good! sure we could do with a few more but since our rival teams (blackburn, aston villa, west ham, everton, portsmouth) havent really inproved at all and some have actually gotten weaker i reckon things are definitely looking up!

Pavuluychenko is not that impressive to me. I’d take Derdiyok any day over Pav. He should thank Arshavin for playing so well the games he did.
and on the last blog, whomever inquired what world I was living in regarding arda turan, what makes you so sure he wont end up here? What other teams have seriously enquired about him lately? And he himself saying he wants to stay at Gala for another year means absolutely nothing. A comment like that holds as much weight as a player signing a new contract. modern football dictates that shorey’s position requires him to be an attacking full back. Arsenal have two of the finest in the business in Clichy & Sagna.
Beye already complements our team on the right side. He impressed me during both his outing in an England jersey esp. against Brazil. He played like a veteran leftback.
Now if we can sign Per Ciljan & a striker who can hold the ball.
Personally, I be happy if we sign Sibierski 2 hours before tranfer window closes. He be useful for the young strikers at the club.

As for the article, think Shorey would make a sound purchase, especially if it’s around £3m, but wouldn’t go any over £4m tops. Enrique, given a year or two will be the better full back, we just need to use him cautiously unlike last year throwing him straight in.

I’d be happy with a solid midfielder myself, someone like Appiah from Fener, and rely on the wings for creativity, abit like Wenger did in his team of Gilberto/Petit and Vieira in the centre with Pires and Ljungberg on either side. Could work a treat esp. as both Jonas and Milner are players of the type that do track back aswell. I think it could possibly work a treat…

Im with you on the Inler one, really thought he stood out for the swiss at the Euros, but havn’t seen enough of him outside of them. Although, there were rave reviews about him being best foreigner in the Serie A last season.
One player who really stood out at the Euros for me was Senna, but he’s way out of our bracket. The guy was quality.

Nick, i dunno if Andy’swords were hype or not, but what your on about with 3 deals at one is very much possible. It’s one of the oldest sayings in the book, don’t but your eggs all in one basket, no club would just be in touch with 1 player at a time. Teams do often bid for a number of similar players in the hope they can get far with maybe 1 or 2. Unless of course your Chelsea, then you pick a single player and purchase.

GG7, I was watching Arsenal today taking on Juve, must say they are like a conveyor belt just consistently producing talent. They have so many talented kids its crazy. I really liked the look of two of them. Vela who i knew much about but iv properly bothered to watch fully today, and Wilshere. The kid’s 16 but is immensely talented. I think he’s really got something about him. Iv also heard alot about a kid called Henri Lansbury in the youth team but havent as of yet seen him.
