Newcastle are trailing at half time by a single goal, which was scored after just 6 minutes.

Newcastle have a back four of youngsters on display, with an average age of just 21 with Edgar Taylor Bassong and Enrique making up the back-line.

Newcastle will need to increase the tempo of their game if they are get near to winning this, which they need to have any chance of winning this thing - the Summer Cup that is.

Here’s a detailed report of the first half.

It looks like Newcastle are playing Cacapa in a midfield defensive role with a back four of Edgar (20), Taylor (22), Bassong (21) and Enrique (22). That’s an average age of about 21 for the back four – we’ll see how they do, with the old man Cacapa (32) in front of them.

6 mins - Would you believe it. After just 6minutes Real Mallorca have gone ahead as the unmarked Mario Suarez puts home a free kick out on the left that gave goalkeeper Harper no chance.

Not a good start for the young defense.

11 mins – Young French central defender Bassong has under-hit a pass back to Harper and the goalkeeper has to come running out, and kicks the ball way into the stands – it’s a nervous start by Newcastle.

15 mins - Fernando Valero cut in from the outside left position and hits a shot that goes skyward – not hit quite right by the 28 year-old Spaniard from 20 yeards out.

20 mins - Miner’s persistence wins a corner on the right which James takes himself, but it fails to beat the first man and Mallorca easily clear the ball. Newcastle are finding it hard to get going.

24 mins – A deflected cross comes into the box but Jose Enrique clears up the danger nicely.

27 mins – James Milner manages to get in a low center, which is well placed and whipped across, but 31 year old 6’1” central defender José Carlos Nunes blasts the ball clear.

32 mins Milner gets in a wicked cross at the near post and Smith bravely goes in to get on the end of it, but is just beaten to the ball by Ramis, but the Mallorca defender receives treatment after a clash of heads with Smith – but he seems OK to carry on. Good aggressive play by Alan Smith

38min – Real Mallorca captain Juan Arango moves the ball forward and looks to pass it, but with the defense opening up in front of him he decides to shoot, but goes wide of Steve Harper’s goal.

39 mins - Oscar Trejo then tries a shot, but it lacks any real speed or direction and Harper saves the shot with consummate ease.

41min - Milner’s trickery wins a corner off the shins of Arango on the left. The winger crosses and the unmarked Bassong should open his Toon account but sees his downward header bounce wide of the target.

43min - Valera tries a shot from distance and it deflects off Seb Bassong and is rolling slowly for a corner before David Edgar comes across to kick the ball downfield.

The half-time whistle goes and Newcastle are still trying to get into this game.

  • 16 Brazilian Geordie // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:19

    Damn IT!

Flamengo lost 2-1 for Cruzeiro at home. Now, the NUFC are loosing another match.

  • 17 Toon1978 // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:19

When are we gonna have a shot at friggin goal AT LEAST.

  • 18 Jinal // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:20

    Watch Geremi waste this freekick

  • 19 Obafan // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:20

Bassong indeeds looks a good player; strong and good in his tackles. Duff also is quite okay, but the rest oh dear…

  • 20 Vaughany // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:21

GOD why does geremi take freekicks

  • 21 Toon1978 // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:21

    OOHHH dear me.

  • 22 Jinal // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:22

    Haway Foster!!!!

  • 23 Kevin // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:22

They just can’t be bothered. It’s just sad watching these “professional footballers.” I know it’s preseason, but I’ve a sinking feeling it’ll continue through next May…

  • 24 Obafan // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:23

Well taken Geremi; it is another sport tho’ that would have delivered a point not in football. We just can’t get a shot at goal.

    What a misery…

  • 25 Jinal // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:24

KK bring on some of the young lads into midfield. And Carroll for Smudge

  • 26 GraemeR // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:26

Any one think KK may walk due to the lack of transfer ambition by the club. I seem to remember that on his return he was promised funds to buy players. It is obvious that we are short up front, have no match winner midfielder and are already down to thte bare bones of the squad b4 a ball is kicked in anger

  • 27 Toon1978 // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:26

Problem with Milner is that he beats his man then stops and tries to beat him again but for me Smith is extremely poor and should not be playing but for a weak bench compared to the depth of Mallorca with 12 subs. We struggle to put a bloody team out.

  • 28 Geordie SPIDERMAN18 (GG7) // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:27

bad challenge on duff there, i want to see godsmark and tozer on

  • 29 Irish-Toon // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:27

I’d like to see some of the youngsters come on, Smith & Geremi have been bloody awful, give soemone else a chance it’s only a friendly.

The only positive so far has been Bassong

  • 30 Obafan // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:27

If KK is still positive after this performance then he really has lost his football brain.

They all need a good hard labour training, that they know what they are playing for, cause they just don’t care to wear the NUFC shirt. Sad sad sad.

    Toothless up front

  • 37 Jinal // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:32

KK looks so distraught by the type of play he’s seeing.

  • 38 Obafan // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:32

I hope they all wake up after this game and that the board sees they nreally need to spend to get the success they want (if they want it???).

  • 39 Geordie SPIDERMAN18 (GG7) // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:33

i like donaldson also, im glad we have bought him on

  • 40 Geordie SPIDERMAN18 (GG7) // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:34

    donnaldson is v good

  • 41 Irish-Toon // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:34

SPIDERMAN18 (message 33) a bit too negative for my liking. We still have Given, Beye, Butt, Martins, Viduka, Owen & Nzogbia too come in, and if the transfer goes through Coloccini too., so that’s 8 plus whoever else they pick up in the rest of the window

  • 42 Jinal // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:35

Did we ever get Aaron Spear?

  • 43 Danish_Magpie // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:35

  • 44 Geordie SPIDERMAN18 (GG7) // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:36

  • 45 si // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:37

We will be relagated i hate this
    something Must be done NOW!!!!!!!!!!

  • 46 Jinal // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:37

Now compare that freekick with Geremi’s?

  • 47 Obafan // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:37

That was a good free kick. Something which our team can’t.

  • 48 Obafan // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:39

I bet MA is not watching and doesn’t care at all.

  • 49 Jinal // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:42

Obafan, I think he does care. I can’t give you any proof because he certainly hasn’t started splashing the cash, but do you really want to see 11 money grabbing talented players wearing the black and white shirt?

  • 50 Obafan // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:42

Thank God Bassong is in our defence tonight. Play him alongside Faye and leave Taylor out forever (if Colo doesn’t come off course).

  • 51 ObaFan2 // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:42

    Bassong again great play.

  • 52 Danny G // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:43

    Now we have Coloccini….

All of our efforts must now go into finding another striker (One who scores) and a playmaker…

I have never really worried about the lack of depth in our squad until now!

We need at least 4 more bodies….Bassong has been really good, I would play him as much as we can…If not at centre half then at left back!

    Hes like a young Distin…

  • 53 Irish-Toon // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:43

I aint too fussed about friendlies, 2 weeks time is when it all starts. I’m not expecting miracles against Manure, but I’d like a decent performance.
If we get Coloccini I’d be tempted to go with him and Bassong, as Bassong has been one of the few positives to come out of this tournament

  • 54 Geordie SPIDERMAN18 (GG7) // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:44

I LIKE BASSONG ALOT, APART FROM THERE GOAL TAYLOR HAS LOOKED REALLY GOOD, BASSONG TO SCORE HERE

  • 55 Jinal // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:44

There is absolutely no creativity upfield. We just keep on playing the ball around in the hope that there might just be a gap somewhere or that the opposition might just make a mistake.

  • 56 Steeley // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:44

Since when have a team of people so young played so slowly!! I thought these lot were supposed to be the fittest players in the league! Hmmmm….

I hope to got Smith and Geremi are gone by the start of the season!!

  • 57 sirjasontoon // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:44

Alan Smith joined United on 2 August 2007, signing from Manchester United for an undisclosed fee.

The bustling goal-scoring striker agreed a five-year contract at St. James’ Park. Gritty and determined, he possesses great strength and is adaptable enough to fill a midfield role too with great aplomb.

This is on the official site stats so it must be true…needs updating I think : )

  • 58 Irish_toon // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:45

milner just hit a good cross!!!

  • 59 Geordie SPIDERMAN18 (GG7) // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:45

YEAR AGO YESTERDAY SINCE HE SIGNED, HOW NAIVE WERE WE EY?

  • 60 Jinal // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:46

And is Smudge still on the pitch? I haven’t seen him since just after kickoff.

  • 61 Dave Hill // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:46

This will finnish 1 all Milmer to score

  • 62 MikeNUFC // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:46

I know that this is only a friendly, and we have a young team out, but this its truely awful, we have nothing going forward. Donaldson looks bright, but you couldnt notice that Smith was on the pitch. Duff lively as is milner, but we look a bit slow and there is no energy about our attacks!

….will this change with Owen, Dukes and Oba?? On a plus point, Bassong looks very good, nice work KK.

    What does everyone think?

  • 63 Tommy // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:46

We’re passing the ball round o.k.. Bassong is playing well, in desperate need of creativity from the midfield though..

  • 64 sirjasontoon // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:46

Danny G where does it say we have Coloccini?
Post the link please I think I missed that one.

  • 65 Geordie SPIDERMAN18 (GG7) // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:47

where is risse when u need him to cannon one on alan smith

  • 66 shirts // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:47

I’m with Irish toon. Everything we’ve read says the team’s just been working on fitness. They haven’t even been doing ball work. So they’re probably just tired out and rusty. Not to mention the heat.

  • 67 Obafan // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:48

Jinal - I don’t know what to think anymore. If he really bought the club to get success then he would show more ambition in the transfer market and in getting a new deal with Owen. But it all seems to take ages and in the end nothing happens.

I’m really getting worried and I hope that he sells the club to the Indian, unless he comes out and says to all the fans that he wants to go forward with this club by making great investments.

  • 68 Ginkoh // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:49

Same old Newcastle. Our players still don’t know how to play football. Non tactic, non tecnique very bad football for us.

I think i see some standard devision1 team.

Duff and Milner grafting hard but poor last balls

  • 72 JEFF // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:52

ASSUMING OUR BEST SIDE IS SOMETHING LIKE ……GIVEN,BEYE,COLO,BASSONG/FAYE,ENRIQUE,SPIDER,BUTT,GUTHRIE,DUFF,OWEN AND MARTINS IT MEANS THERE ARE ONLY 4 FIRST CHOICE PLAYERS ON THE PITCH…..PLUS WE ARE STILL LIKELY TO BUY A COUPLE MORE PLAYERS. SO NOT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM.

  • 73 Geordie SPIDERMAN18 (GG7) // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:53

    duff playing really well

  • 74 Isaac Hunt // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:53

I’m sick of hearing about Doom and Gloom. get them signed ffs.

  • 75 Irish-Toon // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:54

At the moment we’re a mid table side. If we have a very good season we might push up as far as a Uefa cup spot, a bad season and we’ll be dragged into the relegation scrap, and an average season will see us end up where we were last season. Don’t expect miracles

  • 76 Geordie SPIDERMAN18 (GG7) // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:54

anyone here play a highish standard of football for any clubs?

    Good night everyone

  • 81 geist // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:58

Please lets sell Smith, he really is pathetic. Bassong looking very good though.

  • 82 Obafan // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:58

Smith just broke the world record: He was able to get 250 times on the ground during 90 minutes. He will be in Guiness World Record Book 2008 presented in the black n white shirt that MA wears.

  • 83 NotAGhostToon // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:05

Hmm only a friendly but frustrating. smith words dont do his brilliance justice…. better than shearer!

  • 84 Gooderz // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:06

Smith let everyone down again tonight. Is it just me or has he stopped running around like a headless chicken in favour of walking about gingerly for 90 minutes? And after all this talk of fitness.

Donaldson showed some good little signs. There was one moment when he came got the ball and then took up the open space on the wing. Now that’s good simple awareness and movement (Take note Smith).

And at least we know playing Cacapa in DM isn’t a good idea. The commentator was spot on in saying that he was more of a hinderence to our play due to his inability to pass (and not being able to run).

  • 85 GraemeR // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:07

Jeff - I thought we had gone away with the 23rd hour panic signings of old. We should have these players in long ago so that they can get settled.
We still are in need of 1st team players - one for the future is not going to do. As a club we have crucified many a fine youngster by putting too much pressure on them young - Jon DAhl Tommasson, Viana to name two - if we are not careful we will kill of all the current crop as well as get relegated - THERE I SAID IT - and normally my depression doesnt set in till November.

  • 86 shirts // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:08

It was probably Keegan’s instructions for Smith to hang around the box instead of running like a man on fire.

  • 87 M.Stockley // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:08

Unless Ashley does want to sell i pray he took a close look at the past 3 pre season performances! we have no quality in depth,no quality in midfeild and i just hope he realises this and with what we have 2/3 signings even wont be enough! im afraid he must spend or get lost and sell up to someone who will truley take us foward, cuz watching that tonight was depressing! SMITH AND GEREMI ARE CACK!

  • 88 Obafan // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:08

I’m very disappointed even tho’ it was just a preseason game.

It is already 1 year that I really get angry when I see these players play:
    1. Taylor: crap defender (but we never witnessed it cause he played alongside even more pathetic CB like Bramble and Boumsong). Plus the fact that he is more concentrated on talking to the press than getting a descent player.

    2. Milner: why didn’t we take the £9m???? He can’t cross, has got no intelligence at all; runs like a headless chicken; tries to dribble 1 opponent 5 times; thinks he is better in the center but isn’t at all.

    3. Smith: useless, I’m not going to spend more words on him.

  • 89 Stantos // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:09

anyone else think that this is the guy MA wants by his side at the club. Even if MA steps aside and becomes a miniority shareholder, with the money this guy has it’s gotta be a good thing right ?

bring in - Burdisso, Coloccini, Skjelbred, Inler & Shorey

Bassong stood out massively tonight….every1 else = Pure S**e!

  • 91 Craignufc // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:09

i know its only a friendly but we aint scored a goal in 3 games! not good enough.

  • 92 Gareth // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:10

Can’t really judge too much from that I reckon, given the cobbled together nature of the side. Our most creative players were on the wings, but there’s no point in that if you’ve only got Smith in the middle - it was fairly inevitable that we occasionally passed it around ok in the middle third, but failed to do anything where it mattered. I think the biggest improvement that can be made is to get some decent strikers on the field (and or a creative midfielder, or at least one who gets into the box.)

Biggest plus was that Bassong looked pretty impressive. Not entirely sure exactly how Guthrie will fit in; he looks like he wants to play a Carrick sort of role, staying deep and passing it around, so he either needs to learn to defend better or maybe play in a team with a 3 man midfield - him, a DM and an AM.

  • 93 JoshNufc91 // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:10

bassong was the only decent player
steven taylor is totally and completely s**te!

  • 94 Ivan // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:10

Really disappointing. We finish the tournament last in the group.

But look at the brighter sides, last season we trashed teams in pre-season and look at what we got when the season started and went on. Complacency!

At least now, the players have to push themselves with man u being the first game.

  • 95 Isaac Hunt // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:10

I played for the Boys Brigade (the ‘24th’ on Atkinson Road) - about the same standard as the toon’s second half

  • 96 Jinal // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:13

Obafan, Ambani is like another Thaskin Shinawatra.

  • 97 iffy // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:13

  • 98 NUFCFAN // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:14

wasnt much cutting edge when you look at Arsenals reserves against madrid to ours against Mallorca!

however signings still to come and players to return

  • 99 Jinal // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:14

Good point Ivan. The players will work harder (hopefully!) , and our expectations are abit subdued.

  • 100 Obafan // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:14

Stantos - Nice picture of maybe our new owner.

  • 101 Gareth // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:15

Haha, dunno Ivan, I reckon we might as well treat Man U as a practice match too, for all our chances of getting anything! I’m just hoping that as it’s the first game Man U won’t be in their stride yet so it won’t be a complete embarrassment. 2 goal defeat would do me - how’s that for optimism!

  • 102 Obafan // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:16

Jinal - Why? Has this guy also done some bad things?

  • 103 MAG PIE // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:17

Only saw 2nd half but thought Edgar looked canny. Duff’s effort has to be aplauded but as a defender of Smith in the past I have to admit he was shocking. He looked like Shola! Geremi was also very poor. Who was the other centre midfielder - I never spotted him !? Bassong looked decent and Enrique OK.

  • 104 GraemeR // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:18

I bet EMO is pleased he hasnt signed a new contract. 3 (PRE SEASON GAMES) and no goals to show. Hes got MA over a barrel - I think a 100% increase is what he will be after !!!!

If not he will go on a free (or even a Webster)

  • 105 Oba // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:20

Why are people on here so negative? We had at least 8 people out for this game, and had Smith in the side. We obviously weren’t going to score.

Just be patient, Colo will arrive tomorrow. Then two more will come during the week. I am in the know.

  • 106 Rubber Guard // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:20

If we get Coccolini signed, he and Bassong could do a good job as CB’s, Faye could be used as back up alongside Taylor. Bassong could also be used as back up for Enrique at LB. Edgar played a full game tonight and played very well I felt, all he needs is a bit of a run to boost his confidence. He would be very capable cover for Beye at RB. Good performance from the young defence, less said about the midfield and alleged strikers the better.

Again Something F**king MUST be done we will not last 2 minutes next season when we get hamered by man u i’ll be here to say i told ya so but you know what i wont want to….
I’ve become so disalousioned not even when kenny stupid no nothing dalglish was in charge did i feel so bad about football at the holy st. james’s park. every player on that team need to wake the hell up there not superstars they would get shown up at sunday league level ,
as for our management staff well actions speak louder than words, look at spurs and the moves there making they are what we used to be, its hard to hear but it has to be said we are not better than than teams like wigan and you now what at least there players have a bit of fight in them, a bunch of overated pre madona’s
I hate talking like this but you know what someone has to be honest
You can all stop dreaming of signing even half decent players just look at the rubbish we have signed compared to others in the league i mean it just makes me sick
look at what portsmouth are doing ten years ago they nearly went out of football all together,
what wer we doing ten years ago thats right fighting for a top four finish now we are but a mear shadow of what we used to be sometimes i feel like crying over it
    I LOVE NEWCASTLE
I hope to god we sort the mess out

Yes - alot! Besides, I know some Yids and Scousers who own shares in Reliance (which is Ambani’s company).

Do you know what that would mean for us??

  • 109 GraemeR // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:21

Oba - its a squad game and obviously our squad isnt upto it - the fact that they have failed to score in 3 games (one against he might of Donnie) is ample proof that we are way of hte pace of a Euro slot.

Edgar, 22, cover for Beye, Bassong, 22, cover for Enrique (who I thought had a fairly good game tonight). Taylor/Faye/Bassong and Coloccini in the middle. Our defence is already sorted. Now we need a playmaker or another CM to replace Butt and Barton. We need another striker, hope to god Derdiyok comes.

i’m getting fed up of all this doom and gloom s***e, ffs it’s pre season, probably 4 first team on pitch tonight. It’s all about fitness, we’ll see a different team wednesday (sorry if I got day mixed up)

It’s bad enough the media f£$%ing us up every chance they get without our own fans joining in.

We’re about to sign a £10m argie defender and Iv’e read in some places people aint happy cos it’s not a midfielder.

I wish people would just stf sometimes arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!

andy nufc- what is your opinion on taylor in the short term? would he start for you?

  • 113 AndyNUFC // Aug 3, 2008 at 23:28

Nope, my defence would be Beye, Colo, Bassong, Enrique. Taylor can be cover though and i’d keep him.

I dunno why but I was expecting us to preform good 2nyt but yet again we were terrible. I no it’s only a friendly but it’s embarrassing, I think the only player who really shined 2nyt for us was Bassong.

Geremi is terrible! I have always thought this and now he’s really startin to P me of he can’t take a decent free kick his touch is awful he can’t cross for S##T.

I really hope we improve in the league because I could really see us gettin relegated if we keep playing this bad :(

Blimey….I drove into my home town tonight to watch the game. Finally after a never say die search around the pubs I managed to see the 2nd half. Bassong was a big plus, Duff was good and not much else can be said other than I think the club are making good signings for the 1st time in a long time. I agree with most, once Curly signs we need to move push forward and get that additional striker and mid field meastro!! With those we can have a good season next year and a top 6 finish might be possible if our players remain fit, if no the striker and attacker are not purchased then we will likely finish around about the same as last year! I remain positive due to the new signings the way the club are working at bringing in decent sorts.

    Great Site Ed

    Hope so.

I WANT the BIG signings!! Lets get excited by big players

Agree with Andy. Beye, Coloccini, Bassong, Enrique. The only problem with it is no native English speakers - thus potential organizational trouble. I’m sure especially Beye is fine and probably Enrique by now - but don’t know how Colo and Bassong’s skills are. It can’t be underestimated how important it is for defenses to be able to communicate with each other and the keeper.
