Keegan Wants Big Response From Players

August 3rd, 2008 · 47 Comments

Kevin Keegan will impress on his players that they need to give the Newcastle fans something to shout about tonight, by going all out against hosts Real Mallorca in the Summer Cup.

Kevin Keegan - will urge his players to go all out

Newcastle, as expected, have been very well supported in Mallorca over the last few days, but the team performed way below par on Friday night to lose 1-0 to Hertha Berlin.

Newcastle came away with zero points while Hertha got 4 points - 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 1 point for every goal scored.

The odds are now well against Newcastle to win the Cup, and the defeat on Friday has certainly taken some of the shine off tonight’s game.

Real Mallorca’s opening 4-2 win over Hannover 96 coupled with Newcastle’s 1-0 loss to Hertha Berlin means that Mallorca has 7 points, Hertha Berlin 4 points, Hannover 96 on 2 points and Newcastle still on a duck ( for US fans a duck is a zero score by the batsman in that venerable game of cricket).

Only a low-scoring Hannover victory, and a taking apart of the hosts by Newcastle tonight, would  give Newcastle the trophy. We like the sound of that “taking the hosts apart’ bit there - maybe we can do just that.

That’s what we should be aiming to do, and that’s all we can do, and that’s what we should try to do.

Newcastle are also facing the embarrassment of finishing the game at the bottom of the table, so Kevin is definitely looking for a good response from his team, after Friday’s dismal display.

Kavein talked to the Sunday Sun today:

“I seem to repeat myself every year — but the problem at this football club has always been getting a team to match the supporters.

“It’s a massive challenge for anybody to do that and it’s my challenge to do that at the moment.

“That’s what I will try to do and I’m doing my very best to do exactly that.”

Newcastle had a light session today before tonight’s game at the Bilboni Stadium, and they are without striker Shola Ameobi, who pulled a hamstring on Friday night, and is out for around 10 days.

Not sure who we’ll be playing up front tonight with Alan Smith, but we could do a lot worse than play James Milner there, since he started his career as a striker.

He cannot do much worse than Shola and Alan did on Friday night, that’s for sure.

We also have teenagers Frank Danquah and Ryan Donaldson on the trip, but we think Kevin is unlikely to play either of them, unless one of them has really impressed in training.

It could be James Milner, Damien Duff or even new signing Jonas Gutierrez as a makeshift forward tonight up front with Smith, who just must start scoring goals.

Kevin was a little concerned about the team’s lack of penetration in the final third of the field on Friday and he continued:

“We didn’t create enough chances on Friday.” “It’s always good to test yourself against European sides in pre-season.

“Hertha Berlin were a different type of opposition for us and that was a good test and that will be the same against Real Mallorca tonight.”

“The main thing for us is to get time on the pitch and get the new players integrated and from that point of view it has been very useful.”

“Being away from home has been very good for us too.” “To come out as a group and be together like this is good.”

“The morale in the squad is much better than when I first came in.” “But it can build up even more as players get into condition for the new season.

“The players were tired on Friday night because it’s been so hot over here, as you would expect at this time of year.”

“With the game being later on Sunday that will help us too and the players will step their game up because it’s against the host club Real Mallorca.

“You cannot really judge anybody on pre-season results though.” “They are nice to get but results are only part of pre-season until the season starts for real.”

Good words from Kevin again, and we’d like to see the lads go all out for a big win tonight - anything else will be disappointing.
Comments welcome.

  • 3 Michael // Aug 3, 2008 at 19:19

It wont be Gutierrez up front because Kev already said ages ago he wont play him against his old team.

  • 4 Deepak // Aug 3, 2008 at 19:21

get a new striker , a playmaker and a winger and i wont mind getting a left back.it will solve the penetration problems also

  • 5 GraemeR // Aug 3, 2008 at 19:23

Its a shame that KK has got to tell the 11 that they need to step up their game - apart from Hartlepool they have had a very por pre season and tonight is not shaping up to be any better - Smith playing as a lone striker . Please KK do not play Smith - even Harper up front would be better

Without a genuine forward i dont fancy our chances, after saying that i was quite impressed with the new guys

  • 8 sirjasontoon // Aug 3, 2008 at 19:25

Can’t see this being a high scoring match, not for us anyway, just hoping we don’t pick up anymore injuries.

  • 9 toonfan1 // Aug 3, 2008 at 19:32

well we are not creating chances because we are playing our 5th and 6th best strikers. Owen, Martins, Viduka and even Carroll are better then Ameobi and Smith. when we have our 4 best strikers back, we will be scoring more freely and i am sure that smith will become a bit part player this season and then hopefully next season or this season- he can move onto a team such as hull/west brom/ sunderland who will be fighting at the bottom half of the table.

as long as we get the job done and win this tournament

  • 11 Clarke_19_rangers // Aug 3, 2008 at 19:35

Anything apart from a win will be dissapointing against mallorca
To be challenging for a uefa cup place ( at least)
i think we still need to sign:
1 striker : deriydok? Bendtner? Higuain?
    1 winger: Lennon? Jesus navas?
1 playmaker/Attacking mid: Inler? Maxi Rodríguez?
    1 left back: Rafinha? shorey?
not heard of some of these? just type it in google or youtube!
    Higuain:

  • 12 Spyro // Aug 3, 2008 at 19:39

Rafinha is naturally a RB/RM, but he can play LB/LM Clarke_19.

  • 13 joe // Aug 3, 2008 at 19:40

    what time is k.o. tonight?

dream on clarke, we could never sign rafinha, maxi or higuain

  • 14 Toon1978 // Aug 3, 2008 at 19:41

    2100 mate

  • 15 DC Magpie // Aug 3, 2008 at 19:44

will this game be available online?

  • 16 Spyro // Aug 3, 2008 at 19:46

Rafinha is not likely but not what i would call a “never” signing, “never” signings are players like VDV, Berbatov etc.

If we want Schalke players we should go after Pander as he is a decent LB and great LM, would be good competition for both Zoggy & Enrique who is a more defensive LB. Pander’s crosses and set pieces make Shoreys look average.

  • 17 DC Magpie // Aug 3, 2008 at 19:47

and what is all this BS about Faye leaving us? cannot be true, he is our ROCK!

  • 18 azim // Aug 3, 2008 at 20:02

  • 21 Irish_toon // Aug 3, 2008 at 20:05

berba is an alan shearer fan

  • 22 Toon1978 // Aug 3, 2008 at 20:06

Joe apparently that is bollox about Berbatov being a Newcastle fan. It was spoken about a while back and it turns out his favourite player was Shearer but he was no NUFC fan i think that’s what was said anyway.

  • 23 daiv // Aug 3, 2008 at 20:06

NOTW printing utter rubbish again about MA selling the club. He’s publicallystated that he has no intention of selling the club and we should accept him at his word. Ihave no idea why some of us are getting excited about this story from the garbage press. Have they got nothing better to do than make up stories. At most I reckon Mike wants to sell 1% of the club to an investor and I cannot see a multi billionaire wanting to buy 1% of NUFC. Total rubbish story. Otherwise Mike’s a liar. We must stick with MA and his cautious approach. Within 10 years we will have success.

  • 24 Irish_toon // Aug 3, 2008 at 20:07

Get your money on Alan Smith to score a hattrick. 1000 to 1 with Ladbrokes.

  • 27 Danish_Magpie // Aug 3, 2008 at 20:10

Does anyone know the starting line-up/where one might find it?

    Clarke_19_rangers

that navas video, great tune lol, but 1min.20secs, if you look closely he slotes 1 in the bottom corner againest deportivo, whoo have colocini in defense lmao

  • 30 daiv // Aug 3, 2008 at 20:15

Any sort of response in the final third would be nice. Alan Smith to score a hattrick at 1000 to 1 is inviting but he has to remember that he has to shoot at the goal first before he can score. He seems to have a problem understanding this concept. The football will not fly into the net of its own volition Alan.

  • 31 WIGAZ // Aug 3, 2008 at 20:31

Ed, Mallorca are not a team of part-timers who make their living fishing and selling olive oil to tourists, ya knaa…

I don’t see where did you get the idea that we should be aiming to stuff em. They are a serious team man…

ANY win at their stadium would be FANTASTIC!

  • 45 Geordie SPIDERMAN18 (GG7) // Aug 3, 2008 at 21:01

we have said nothing about the take over, also they say collicini bid has been rejected???

  • 46 Bill F SPLASH THE CASH ASH // Aug 3, 2008 at 21:56

I did a long post suggesting Taylor as a makeshift CF. Also saying that it’s strange that MA might accept a much smaller offer than the American one. Also that the new bidders are apparently prepared to match Chelski in spending. I’ll believe it when I see it.

The post dissappeared into limbo however so this effort is much shorter in case it happens again.

  • 47 Marguerite // Aug 3, 2008 at 22:07

Jeez that first half was painful.
