Ambami Sees Magpies As Massive Club With Massive Potential

August 4th, 2008 · 241 Comments

While we still think the news that Indian Billionaire Anil Ambani is on the brink of buying Newcastle United is untrue, it’s also interesting what his people are saying about our club - some good stuff and true too.

mike-ashley-6893.jpg

Mike Ashley - owner of Newcastle United

The sixth richest man in the world was reported yesterday to have given a one week deadline to Mike Ashley, for him to accept a £260M offer for the club.

Ambami and his company denied this was true, only this morning.

Ambani is said to be worth £21B and a source close to the proposed deal told The Daily Telegraph today:

“Ambani has twice as much money as [Roman] Abramovich and his intentions are deadly serious,”

“His people will put a set of proposals to Ashley and if they don’t like them they will say ‘that’s it’ and turn their attention elsewhere.”

“They won’t be messed about.”

It is understood that English clubs with large fan bases, have attracted interest from Ambani, and Yorkshire clubs Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday are also interesting the Bombay-based Billionaire, and Everton are also said to be within his sights.

But it looks like Newcastle United, with their terrific and passionate fan base is his number one choice, as the source continued:

“They see Newcastle as a massive club with vast potential,”

“They know they already attract 50,000-plus crowds and wonder what would happen if they get back into the Champions League.”

” But they also see India as an untapped market as well.”

This billionaire seems to know what he is talking about, doesn’t he?

Now let’s think - wonder if there is any truth in this story? :D

Comments welcome.

I still think he may buy our club ….

Business moguls, dont do their business in the press, so of course this was always going to be denied.

  • 2 normski1930z // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:43

please please let it be true!!!!!!!!

  • 3 xfer // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:44

Would love to have him here.

  • 4 dylan2k7 // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:44

hope this is true ashley is just not the man to take newcastle forward this man makes cashley look poor

  • 5 yet_another_indian_toon // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:45

    not happening. roobish.

  • 6 paul // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:48

i think it is true and i only hope mike ashley sells because lets face it hes spent no money in the transfer market but he his now only to track buyers so he can sell the club so thats the reason he will sell.

  • 7 Spyro // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:50

oh god, more quotes made up by scum bag journalists with no real stories

  • 8 Spyro // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:52

lol, look at the quote about Ambani having double the money of Abramovic, why the hell would a “source” close to Ambani say such a thing!? lol

  • 9 Midjew // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:52

Its a good person to want to buy us.

He seems like a good business man who isnt stupid like Man Citys Owner.

And to have all that money is just what is needed cos without it we can never push for Champions League as ALL the teams in this day and age require rich RICH owners to compete.

    Man Utd
    Liverpool
    Chelsea
    even Spurs

are spending up to 50m a Season on players and 20m + on 1 player we cannot compete forever on CHEAP youth players.

Even the brilliance of Wenger cannot keep up, he NEEDS to spend big SOMETIMES,

    COME ON BUY US PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 10 Dondatta13 // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:53

Lets just say, for the sake of argument that this conjecture was true. How would everyone feel if Ashley DIDNT sell 100% of his stake, sticking to his guns and was only willing to sell 49% share.

Causing Anil to then turn his attention to Leeds/Everton/Shef Wed turning one of them into a massive footballing force.

    Id be well gutted.

Poor Ashley, he’s darned if he does and he’s darned if he doesn’t

Well said Spyro - nice one :)

  • 12 Mikey24 // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:53

I dunno what to believe anymore!! So many different stories about this, just hope it leads to some form of investment and fast! 2 weeks ’til we start the season with pretty much the same team we’ve been playing with in friendlies!!

  • 13 Matt // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:53

Ambani’s people have rubbished these claims by this ’source’ so why bother taking the parts out that this made up source has said that makes us look good?

  • 14 WesToon // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:54

I dont know what to say anymore…. PLS KK..save us from this nightmare….bring on ANY FEKKING investmen
FFMA(Fat Mike Ashley) needs his money,to stuff his fat face..FFS

  • 15 Beatski // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:55

sell him a 49% stake or something,

ashley says he wants investors, and you dont get much better than this guy

good point that he may only want to be the sole owner of newcastle though Dondatta13 (if these rumours are even true)

  • 16 Matt // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:57

Profitable Group operations director John Nordmann has come out and rejected any takeover claims.

“It is not accurate at all. There is no truth whatsoever with the report. Yes, we are doing some promotional work with Newcastle. But we’re not in talks with them about any takeover. People just put two and two together and came up with five.”

  • 17 Drago // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:57

cmon guys are there really all you want is money ? M.Ashley is a good lad and Football Club should be the one which makes money, not like chelsea, where everything is about money, money, money and there is no need to think… Im very pround that our owner is M.Ashley and i want him to stay for a long long time

  • 18 valle // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:57

Ed… This is yeasterdays quotes, before people close to him denied it all today… I dont see any reason to keep the story running after it was ruled out and i think you should be a bit more carefull not to get the hopes up of the users.

  • 19 Tom // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:59

Whether this is true or not, I don’t know, I believe its unlikely.

I just hope that, if it is true, we can carry on strengthening the team during this window, and not wait till the next one because MA won’t spend with a takeover imminent.

  • 20 Dondatta13 // Aug 4, 2008 at 14:59

Spyro, now im not saying these quotes are real or not BUT someone might say such a thing like “He has twice the money of Abramovic” becasue he (Abramovic) is the bench mark/ most famous Billionaire owner of a premiership team

    Just a thought ;)

  • 21 sirjasontoon // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:02

We will never move forward under the present regime or we might but it will take years and loads of luck along the way.

Ashley just seems uninterested in spending money on players…hopefully if we do get sold they can get rid of the recruitment team who have managed to sign one senior player between them so far.

Any news on coloccini and the signing that was promised in “24 hours (on friday)?

Nothing has been spent on players since Ashley came here…and the squad is fragile and very thin.

  • 22 Ben_BKK // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:03

He may have money, but if he were to take over, would he be investing in the club, or loaning us the cash, like Abramovich has done at Chelsea…

Chelsea actually owe him over 500 million, as he was only loaning the club the money, he expects it back.

  • 23 sirjasontoon // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:05

Mike needs to prove himself in this window that he is serious about our club…so far I don’t see this happening and we just drag our feet or buy kids.

  • 24 HeronMag // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:05

Personally I want Ashley to stay. He seems to have a genuine interest in the club and financially is getting us back into the black. If he wants to find other investors I’m all for it, but I think he has an emotional connection to the club now. I can’t see him leaving the club completely.

  • 25 Punk Skunk // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:05

    Apparently!..
…If ANY of this is actually true!..

  • 26 Aaron // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:05

hopefully this happens then we can be chelsea of the north. this collocini transfer is dragging up hurry up and get it sorted. Keegan most recently interview said he will defo sign 2 players and maybe 3 so thats changed from 4 2 weeks ago.

  • 27 Bill F SPLASH THE CASH ASH // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:06

Dunno about everyone else, but the whole thing feels a bit sordid. I have this picture in my mind of the club posing like one of those Amsterdam ladies in their windows trying to get a rich punter. And it also feels that MA having had a one night stand has got what he wants and now wants to dump us. On the other hand we could be misjudging him, it’s up to him to prove it and show some real committment. i.e. Splashing some real cash for starters.

  • 28 Tony // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:08

If he’s worth £21bn don’t you think he would have offered a better deal for Ashley if it were true? £260m would never be enough to convince him to sell so why bother? the answer is-he didn’t bother. If he wanted the club that badly then he would have made an offer Ashley couldn’t refuse–he can afford it after all. Ashley probably asked for investment in the club if anything but even that is doubtful as he’s already said he’s looking for investment from the north east NOT the far east. don’t believe a word of the NOTW scumpaper, or it’s big sis the Sun.

  • 29 dsr // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:10

has anyone wondered if a source close to him would circulate comments like this in the press in order to cause fan reactions just like the ones on this message board and thus put pressure on ashley to sell?

  • 30 dick // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:10

Dont understand ashley not wanting to buy players after last seasons brush with relagation. How much will his club be worth if toon go down, only thing I can think of is he must be desperate to sell before that happens

    Load of rubbish!!!

  • 33 Black and White Blood // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:12

Guy’s seriously, there will be no truth in this; I’ve become so worried at the lack of transfer activity at the club, that I have been questioning the role MA has at our great club, without actually stepping back at evaluating things rationally.

MA does not want to sell the club. I firmly believe he loves this club dearly. It’s just human nature for us the fans to question his intentions, more so when things don’t appear to be progressing as we had hoped. I for one, am rather pleased with his actions, it shows the club means more than just financial gains to him. However, I do believe MA realises that he requires additional funds to further the club, therefore, rather then sitting back and doing nothing, or taking out excessive loans to purchase players and destabilising the club with huge debt, he is proactively looking to invite investors. For this reason, from what I can understand, associates have approached this chap and offered him the option to invest in the club. If this is the case, then surly we must all respect MA for that.

I think we all need to be realistic, we all are aware Keegan is a man of principles, and if something wasn’t quite right he would walk – Well why isn’t he walking, maybe it’s the fact Keegan knows exactly what’s going on in the behind closed doors.

  • 34 sirjasontoon // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:16

If Keegan has to work with his current crop of players he is not going to stay.

When he was signed by mort and ashley surely he was told that he would be backed to build his own team..instead he is stuck with Allardyce rejects, strikers who can’t score and a transfer pot the size of a thimble.

    Wot No Collocinni yet???

Not another one the Super team of Wise and Jimenez have F###ed up on is it???

The clowns of the toon and Cashley are doing a mighty fine job of bolloxing up my team I think!!!!

  • 36 Graham // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:18

sirjasontoon - we have moved on massivley as a club since Ashley took over… were not on the verge of collapse for a start!

For the first time in years the club has an agenda other than a trophy signing just before the season starts to keep the fans happy.

Maybe its just me but if this Indian guy does take over (and I wouldn’t blame Ashley for selling at a profit as half the fans are on his back to open his wallet every 5 mins) and he does spend £150m on players - will that not take out some of the passion of our club just as it has at Chelsea.

And what happens when he gets bored and walks away leaving us in the brown stuff? Who comes in and picks up the pieces then?

  • 37 Davies // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:20

    You’re a bunch of whores.

Ashley has poured £280m into our club and has turned it into a decent business. He’s proved that he wants to invest by making offers for the likes of Modric, Arda and Aimar. That we haven’t attracted the players you all want is not down to him, it’s down to our finishing in the bottom half of the league for the last two seasons and the lack of European football.

We have secured some talent this summer, and we’ll buy more.

Honestly, the first person to wave a bit of cash at our club and you lot drop your knickers like a cheap hooker.

I hope this is just more press drivel. I, for one, would like to see Ashley stay and live up to his committment to “win something” other than fickle supporters contempt.

  • 38 Black and White Blood // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:21

Sir Jay - That’s my worry, however whilst Keegan remains at the club it’ll give me confidence that work is going on behind closed doors to improve the club. Otherwise he will go… :-(

I’m hoping these hard times are a short term problem!!!

  • 45 harrier // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:26

Sirjasontoon - you just made that up. How do you know Keegan’s intentions, moods, feelings except from the interviews we have. From the interviews he is cheery and optimistic and looking forward to the new season - so what you said is a complete fabrication of the Daily Mail kind - not based on fact.

  • 46 Nick Dryden // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:26

  • 48 antz // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:28

ok, ive watched and watched the comments regarding this and i now feel i have to say something, after listening to that prick rob shepherd, from the NOTW being interviewed yesterday he said some valid points, (even though i still think he’s a c*nt!!) the main one being that they have had dialogue and they have also signed a non/disclosure agreement (someone please feel free to correct me on the terminology of that) now by signing that, this means that neither party can comment upon it or dicsuss it in any form regarding details of a takeover as is stated by the city in such circumstances, yes i know we are no longer a publicly owned company but these things still happen within the private sector to stop any other bidders becoming aware/making counterbids, so if we are to believe this then neither of them are LEGALLY allowed to give anything away

  • 49 Punk Skunk // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:28

    Sounds ominous!..

  • 50 Dondatta13 // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:30

Davies, I dont think for one second Ashley has, as you put it “poured £280 Million into the club”

He bought NUFC for £130 Million and he discovered we had £80Million debt (because he apparently DIDNT do due diligence, checking the books).

You seem to be £70 Million over on your estimations.

  • 51 Graham // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:32

    well said B&W blood.

Angry Man - Other thanSteve Gibson at Boro and Abramovich, name me another owner / chairman that isn’t in it for the money?

    Open your eyes man

  • 52 harrier // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:35

Dondatta - as was explained to me - we had an overdraft of some 80 million pounds on the club bank account which could be paid of in some obscure year in the future. However, during the takeover - the bank had a clause in the deal to allow them to demand the loans be repaid within 60 days. Boom, 80 mill gone. Because the income of the club is less than the operating costs, we have a negative cashflow - and so banks will not lend to us either. So it costs Ashley money each year to maintain our wage bill while then adding more cash for transfers.

  • 53 9 Shearer // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:35

As i said earlier, I dont care about Ashley what i care about are his policies. When he goes and that is what I want we should stay to what he has left like Wise and co. , they jst knw how to spot young talent. We shouls stay with the policy of young lads hungry for success not money hungry players. Let KK and OWEN LEAD THE TEAM. Now am in with tthe Indian, without that he should leave.

  • 54 Graham // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:36

  • 55 Macas // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:36

It’s a good job no one on this blog has completely over reacted to a few friendly defeats with an injury hit squad. The only person of any note that we have shipped out since last season is an injury prone Emre, and we have added a quality winger, a promising midfielder, and a very promising CB with one experienced CB to come in. And there are still over 3 weeks left in the transfer window. We are surely doomed.

  • 56 Punk Skunk // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:38

    Perspective!..

  • 57 Black and White Blood // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:39

Angryman the Angry Fan - Hey mate I completely respect your opinion, although I merely chose to believe that MA will be good for our club long term.

What gives us the right to expect instant success, would it not be wiser to lay a solid foundation which would then allow building over the coming years, as Everton Portsmouth have done so. Can you imagine NUFC run as a stabilised club, like everything else stability will bring success.

Personally, if I had a choice of watching our fantastic club play Championship Football or go into ‘Administration’ through paying exorbitant wages on pre-madonna’s, then it would be Championship Football every time.

What more can MA do, in my opinion, he love the club, therefore doesn’t wish to relinquish control so that he is able to ensure its run diligently, hence he’s looking for investors to inject cash – Good on him!!

  • 58 antz // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:40

well said Davies….wait until abramovich leaves chelsea n they end up gettin removed fromt he league cuz theyre debt and ull see why the billionaire money thign is bad….remember what goes up must come down….

until im a billionaire and buy the club….

  • 61 valle // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:41

Davies… You do have some valid points, but calling anyone who disagree with you for whores is kindergarden discussions… MA only needed to spend a bit to get the supporters fimrly behind him and it seems that he is close to proving his ambition with Coloccini taking our net spend to 10 million. 2 players more of a proven standard and there will be happy faces all over i reckon… HOWEVER… MA making NUFC a good business should please no one but MA’s bankers, so will people please stop using that as a point to prove their case. The 80 million debt was NOT cripling. If that was the case, you could bet your house on the southern press making a meal of it and almost all clubs have debst these days. What MA DID do was to help us get rid of fat fred, make a long term plan that makes sense and get KK back to steer us back. The money he used to buy NUFC got himself his own private EPL club, and that shouldnt be a point to earn supporters trusts and the money he used to clear the debt made sense since he had the money to clear it and thereby wouldnt have to pay rates anymore. But again, that has nothing to do with the team and will neither help us gain a place in Europe or save us from relegation… So when defending MA, keep it to all the football related stuff he does will ya?

  • 62 Dondatta13 // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:44

Im sorry Harrier im not in no way shape or form good with numbers.

I was under the impression that :-

We get money from TV revenue (I think we got around £37.5Million this year).

Season ticket sales (I have no clue how much the collates to, but that has to be a huge amount).

    Shirt sales …

    Sporsorship deals….

    Finishing position in the league….

When all that is accounted for, I still dont see how Ashley has injected anywhere near the amount mentioned by Davies.

Do you think Ashley has injected another £70 million into the club on top of the £130 Mill purchase and £80 Million debt?

  • 63 Chris H // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:45

It’s good to see Ashley getting some praise on here for a change. Things are improving at the club. It may seem slow but he’s only been here just over a year. He hasn’t been given a chance to show his true intentions and I certainly don’t think he’s here for a quick profit.
I’ll be happy to stick with Ashley and I’m sure we’ll see a few new faces before the transfer window closes.

  • 64 Todd // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:49

A nondisclosure means just that. No talking about the matter. Two things strike me about this article:
    1. It is in the British Press so it has 5% chance being partially true at best. (If it were in America that number would rise to a good 12% or so)…
    2. It quotes a “source close to the deal” which is press speak for “I just made this stuff up.”

Moreover, as the comment above stated, for all the huge crowds at the home games, it certainly appears that the club is money-losing proposition for any owner unless the team gets into Europe and goes far or does well in the three domestic trophy runs. Not that having an investment that loses money is a bad thing if the owner has a holding company for lots of enterprises and loss on one is a tax advantage that sets off earnings on others. Recall that M.A. came out in the press recently and basically stated that
    1. He was losing money and not happy about it.
    2. He would welcome a small percentage investor.
    3. He would prefer that investor come from the Newcastle business community.

None of this squares with “sell entire team right before the season starts to Indian guy who is very savvy at looking for investments that make money.”

On the other hand, what wouldn’t be bad would be a joint venture between the two and an injection of liquid funds as a result. Indian guy gets a brand he can market to 1.1 billion people with ties to English culture already and M.A. gets some relief from the losses and some free advice on how to set up sportswear shops in the aforementioned 1.1 billion person market. That is a lot of Slazenger tennis balls…

JC - I read it before but didn’t want to upset anyone

  • 68 harrier // Aug 4, 2008 at 15:58

Dondatta - look at it this way - if we charged all 52000 fans at premium season ticket prices - 800 pounds - then our total ticket sales would be around 800*52000 = 41 million (remember, we only make money for 19 games a season and alot of the tickets are as cheap as 300). If we sell 250000 shirts on top of that (which would require every single person in newcastle to buy one) we would get another 10 million. That is a total of 88 million with tv revenue. We have no more sponsorship money since all the Northern Rock dough paid Michael Owen’s transfer fee.

Michael Owen makes 5.7 million a year alone with lots of players on our books not that far behind. In fact if our 24 man squad had an average wage of 50k a week that would cost us 62 million per year! Thank god for the cheapos on our team like Milner and Taylor. On top of first team wages are things like - electric bills (for a huge stadium) and maintenance costs, as well as the training grounds. Our acadamy teams as well as our staff wages. Travel and other various expenses. It is a costly enterprise. Then you ask where the 50 million for transfers are? Well Mike pays for those himself out of his own pocket.

No dick - I factored in the 37 million in tv revenue

    Ticket sales - 41 million
    Shirt sales - 10 million

    41 + 10 = 51

    Tv Revenue - 37 million

    51 + 37 = 88 :)

  • 71 Dondatta13 // Aug 4, 2008 at 16:10

Cheers Harrier, I can see now how the cost of owning a club like NUFC would be a strain on finances, add on the cost of paying the police on match days and the cost rises again.

Im still scepticle that the cost over the year or so Ashley has been in charge adds up to £70 Million LOSS for him, if so, maaaaaaaaaan, NUFC is one big hot potatoe lol

  • 72 Tom Toon // Aug 4, 2008 at 16:13

Its still that hot over here in Espana that I am still sat at the PC with me nadgers hanging oot me troosers!

  • 73 harrier // Aug 4, 2008 at 16:13

I don’t think it has been 70 mill so far. But alot of people here seem to think NUFC is Mike Ashley’s “cash cow” But making a profit on a football club, especially one like ours which has a history of paying too much wages, is increasingly difficult. If all TV revenue went straight into transfers - then ticket, merchandise, and sponsorship would have to equate to our wage bill just to break even. As you can tell, even with a big stadium we would have trouble. That is why teams like boro, westham, and city have decent youth setups.

  • 74 antz // Aug 4, 2008 at 16:13

also pies and pints! :D u think, say 50,000 supporters buy a pie/snack and/or 2 pints/drink, id work an average of £8 per supporter x 50k ppl = £400k if we can say they make 50% profit on aforementioned thats £200k per match x approx 25 matches per season = £5million (and thats without getting into allsorts of merchandise and catering)

just thought i’d put a slight fun side to the math! ;-)

  • 76 JC // Aug 4, 2008 at 16:14

Thanks graham…. I didn’t want to put it up either because everyone seems to be a bit on edge today. I’m undecided on the takeover thing. The way I see it is that if its true and he does take us over it could go one of two ways he could build us into a ‘Big 5 Club’ or we could experience the ominous ‘Chelsea Fate’ a period of success funded by ridiculous amounts of money spent on big transfers then one day he will pull the plug and want his money back (just like Abramovich could call in his 500m loan to Chelsea and by this time tomorrow Chelsea would be no more) so we will go into debt and ‘fold like a pack of cards’. We wil see ths in the coming yars to Chelsea mark my words…..

  • 77 harrier // Aug 4, 2008 at 16:16

True antz - but remember - i charged 800 pounds for every seat in the stadium, which increases the revenue alot to start with. Drop it down to 600 and we are down to just 31 million in ticket revenue

  • 78 Dondatta13 // Aug 4, 2008 at 16:20

It was just Davies comments that got me thinking. Someone making a statement that Ashley has poured £280 Million into the club erks me somewhat because they cannot back it up or prove it. I guess some folks just make some rash statements at certain times. In the heat of the conversation and with the passion that boils below the surface of all NUFC fans

  • 79 Beatski // Aug 4, 2008 at 16:20

i read somewhere that newcastle made a net profit of 11mil last year but dont quote me on that

  • 80 SteveM // Aug 4, 2008 at 16:22

I think all this shows is how broken the premiership has become as a fair sporting competition. There is no relagation system from the top four champions legue places and every season that passes the top for move millions of pounds ahead of the rest of the league. I seriously doubt whether Liverpool could financially survive not getting into the Champions League. The current format was devised to placate the top teams and stop them forming their own super league and unfortunately it has lead to a severe imbalance in the game. It is going to take serious investment - probably around an extra £500 million or more to break into the top four - unless we manage to do it the arsenal way. How many seasons of the same 4 teams being in the champions league are the ‘lesser’ clubs like Newcastle Everton, Villa, Man City, Spurs going to put up with before the penny drops that KK was right. Our club is in danger of becoming a motherwell or a Hearts - team to make up the numbers in a league that is loaded from the start. The best we seem to hope for is for another suger daddy to spend money to make us Newcastle Global Business corperation. I dont want a world where Newcastle win by default because they have soo much money - I want Football, I want the Beautiful game, I want a level playing field.

I have a solution that will reintroduce fairness in the priemier league. All clubs get equal money! Champion goes into the champions league together with the winners of playoff games. 2nd plays winner of (5th v 6th) and 3rd plays winner of (4th vs 7th) all matches with home adavantage. Any team that was in the CL the previous year must win their final playoff or be disqualified form taking part next year (this enforces a reglegation style rotation of CL places) If a decision is needed between two teams that have done equally well in the playoffs is needed the decion is made in favour of the highest placed team in the league.

Similarly the same happens at the bottom of the table - last place relagated. then loosers of the following playoffs ((7th from bottom vs 4th from b) vs 2nd from b ) and (( 6th vs 5th) vs 3rd)) - home advantage on the basis of league position. The league should be rescaled to 19 teams with parachute payments being increased. These propasals would do a lot to making football a great competive sport once again in this country. Please can you post serious comments.

  • 83 Graham // Aug 4, 2008 at 16:34

SteveM - I mentioned this a month or 2 ago (not the play off though).

There is no chance of the remaining 16 clubs in the premier league making an impact on the top 4 as loing as they are getting in more TV money. Prize money is slightly different but the gap should be closed from 1st to 20th

  • 84 harrier // Aug 4, 2008 at 16:35

  • 85 Izitme // Aug 4, 2008 at 16:35

I like many other toon fans, have met Mike Ashley, he is as he appears in his photo’s a genuine man who is indulging himself because he can afford to do it, he admits himself you dont get into a EPL club to make money, I for one will be surprised if he sells out, I won’t be at all surprised if he takes on a partner(s) willing to pump money in the club in turn for worldwide exposure in a few years time.

I WANT ASHLEY TO STAY !!!

Contray to what a lot of people are saying the club IS GOING FORWARD. Ashley is an absolute legend.

also I dont support Newcastle United for the glory, I support them cause I think the club are rudy bloody brilliant and have the best supporters in the league, if not the country. Went to Arsenal last year and even when we were 3- nil down a 3000 strong toon army brigade was outsinging the rest of a ghost town like emirates. ‘4-3 we nearly won 4-3′ was the chant at the final whistle

supporting the underdog is the british way and having banter with arm chair supporting friends who all favour the big 4 is part of the fun. i would not have it any other way despite the times when we get dicked on by the likes of Man Utd 7 -0. Just keep telling myself how sweet it will be when we beat one of the big four in the league, let alone when we win the carling cup or FA cup, the feeling will be indescribable !!

now that feeling wouldnt be there if somebody came in and poured in loads of cash and brought us kaka ronaldo and whoever else.

    anyway jsut by two cents,

ps any news on colo ??

pps arshavin would is a rip off at anything near £20m he is 27 and has only ever played anywhere except the russian league (to my knowledge) he did have a good euros but that does not quite justufy the price tag.

Dondatta13 makes a good point, it is a private business how would any of us know how much he actually put in to the club??

The fact he paid £134 million for it if there hadnt have been any debt would make it difficult to ask £250m a year later for it, it seems funny that he is happy for everyone to know he missed £80m when adding up the value of the club when it was only worth £134m.

Anyhow like Valle says it is the football team that interests me and at the moment I am worried but I will wait until the end of the window and see what happens.

what a bunch of fickle tw@ts some of yous are.

I remember when Ashley took over all the fans thanking him for getting rid of fat freddy.

Ashley has not put a foot wrong since he came here.

We’re about to sign a 10 million quid centre half and you don’t know who else is lined up and all you lot can do is look for the next man to come in.

Big Sam was right about a big chunk of our fans being short sited, with ambitions above their station.

We went the road of spalshing stupid money on 2nd rate players for years and won nothing.

We now have a guy who has put 200 million of his own cash into a club he had no allegiance to, but wants to and all you lot can do is blast him and look for his replacement.

I have to say I think the whole story is crap anyway but its certainly brought the sh#t out of the closet as far as some of our fans go.

I truly am sick to me stomach with some of you lot and you’re only adding fuel to the fire in respect of what other fans think of us.

    Thanks Graham for responding.
I dont think the march of the big four is unstoppable just that it may be unstoppable on the football pitch. I think we need to recognise that the big fours commercial interests are totally opposed to our own. I believe that the 16 remainning clubs still have more weight than the top four because of our existing fan base. We dont have to play ball with the big four - i would be more than happy to give them permentant CL place and kick em out of the Premier league. Playing Man U is one thing Playing Man U Global Investement Corp. is another. In monetary terms their current team is worth over twice our team. I think there is a window of a few years in which the rest of the teams in the premier leauge still have the fan base to force the big four to go against their comercial interest. You could market the new league minus the four big corperate teams as a revolution and a rebirth of football. It may take the destruction of another team to make this happen - probably spurs seeing the amount of money they are spending - but I can see a movement taking shape. Would people on this board welcome the exclusion of the big corperate 4 from the league and the return of a competivie league?

  • 114 Toon1978 // Aug 4, 2008 at 17:22

Mag pie Dave you are right mate but i think the fans are worried at how slow we are bringing new players in and watching NUFC the last few nights has not helped Ashley one little bit. Major investment in the team is needed because we are way short in numbers and we need at least 3-4 if not 5 more players to give us any chance of competing for a top 6 position.

  • 117 Punk Skunk // Aug 4, 2008 at 17:32

I think the only way to break the top 4 (not big 4) stranglehold is by introducing a socialist system like in the states!..
    …i.e. No relagation!..
    …”2 leagues…Prem & champ…
…The 2 other leagues become college based, full of kids, learning football & other skills…
…Therefore creating bigger interest in them, ‘cos their players will become future players for everyones teams & the national teams…Therefore, becoming 2 leagues of up & coming stars that would be actually be worth goin’ to see play…& also stop them getting their young mitts on too much money, too soon!..
…It would also probably do away with the transfer system & lead to draft picks for teams to trade in!..

    …My little scheme!..in a nutshell!..

Example Chelsea!!! Or is that not want you meant?

  • 128 daiv // Aug 4, 2008 at 17:55

Mike Ashley may be having “fun” watching Newcastle play but I am certainly not. The guy is too arrogant to talk to the fans. Asked if he had anytging else to say at a time like this when there is all this speculation, he came up with”no.”
What is clear is that there is too much smoke for there to be no fire. Either Ashley is looking for investors or more likely he wants to sell. Why couldn’t he say yesterday that he has not been in touch with this Asian guy?
The squad is paper thin and poor. The players waiting to come back are injury prone so we will be playing some of the players we saw against majorca. Fun football Mike? and some of us call that progress?
What is fairly clear is that the attitude of even people on thius blog is turning against Ashley. Six months ago most would have rubbished the press story immediately. Now most of want to believe it. Why? Well, because we will win nothing with Ashley (and we know it really, don’t we. How can we compete against Man N Chelsea Liv etc when we are buying reserve players) whilst the Asian guy gives us a glimpse of buying world class footballers, not cheap players who might develop into good players and then not be good enough. Real quality costs money. Even a genius like Wenger (much better than KK who I will always hold in high regard) is struggling to compete against mega rich clubs. We should hope this deal is real because it offers NUFC the opportunity to compete with the world’s best. Ashley offers us mediocrity and obscurity.

  • 129 Hobs // Aug 4, 2008 at 17:56

To those who think we’re going slow in the transfer market, here’s how many players the other premier league clubs has brought in. INcluding youngsters but not loan deals:

    Arsenal: 3
    Aston Villa: 4
    Blackburn: 1
    Bolton: 2
    Chelsea: 2
    Everton: 0
    Fulham: 8
    Hull: 7
    Liverpool: 4
    Man City: 2
    Man Utd: 0
    Middlesbrough: 2
    Pompey: 2
    Stoke: 3
    Sunderland: 6
    Tottenham: 5
    WBA: 4
    West Ham: 1
    Wigan: 3

Mind that many of these transfers are low profile players, or youngsters. So apart from Hull and Stoke and especially if we sign Collocini then we’re signing just about as many if not more players as the majority of other PL teams. Be patient!

We are slow. We’ve signed two players for peanuts. Just look at the list and the numbers man. You are arguing against yourself. We’ve also released six so we are 4 down on last year. Really top notch squad!!! KK has every right to sound cheesed off. Weakest NUFC team since 1990/91. Open your eyes and watch the last three games we’ve played.

Now that would have tipped me over the edge!!!

    thought I had missed something.

  • 140 Momo // Aug 4, 2008 at 18:12

I’d do anything for this guy to buy us. Atm MA is probably just sitting in his office drinking beer. Also Ambani is the 6th richest person in the WORLD and he knows what to do with money. At least we can laugh at Chelski when they find out that theyre not the richest club anymore

  • 141 hgjfkd // Aug 4, 2008 at 18:13

    pppppppppppppllllllllllllllllllllllllzzzzzzzzzz buy us

  • 142 Nasko // Aug 4, 2008 at 18:20

  • 147 Hobs // Aug 4, 2008 at 18:36

My comment about the number of transfers was not intended to make anyone beleve that we’re having a big enough squad, my point beeing that we’re still early into the purchasing part of the season, the majority of all transfers is still to come.

Then about spending. Any club that is going to win big trophys must spend big. A team can throw £100mill into players and still not win anything.
Mike Ashley knows this and is obviously not going to couch up this sum right now. If anyone want to buy us up to a trophy winning team then they’re welcome to do so, but it must be regarded as a pure gift from whoever that might be. Roman Abramivich let Chelsea shop for more than £200mill from his own pocket, that’s money he’ll never see again. Chelsea is a rich man’s toy and we’re gonna be pretty lucky if that indian guy choses to have some fun with our club.

But if the Indian comes here just to make even more money for himself then he’ll be just as hard on the Cash as Ashley.

We offered more than £20mill for Modric which shows that the club is willing to spend on the right players, but not buy over the odds as we have done in recent years.

To many people here fails to appreciate what Ashley has done for this club. Calling him broke is just not a serious comment. We’re buying Collocini for more than £10mill, and who knows, maybe there’s a £20mill striker coming in next week?

  • 155 daiv // Aug 4, 2008 at 18:56

Who would you rather have Ashley or a mega rich Indian. He is so rich that £250m is peanuts. How can anyone say he would buy NUFC to make money out of us. To make £100M? He is so rich it would be a toy for him like Chelsea is to Ab. We would exploit him. Not the other way around. But we would sell our soul.I’m for selling the soul for a while to win something. MA offers us no trophies and silence. take the real money.

  • 156 magicman // Aug 4, 2008 at 19:00

cmon man…Ambani has to buy newcastle..
he’s a big figure in india..his company reliance is everywhre and him to newcastle means alot of signings.
mike ashley’s got 2 go. all the big players we have seen on this site and we targeted have gone…somethings got 2 b done.
i watched the nufc mallorca game. even thogh missing alot of players, we have got problems. sell smith and ameobi. get big guns in. ambani can do that 100%. if he goes everton…then we will regret it totally

  • 157 harrier // Aug 4, 2008 at 19:03

hitman - the chronicle sources three quotes from people whose tickets may have risen that much - i sourced the official club season ticket pricing page - i know which i trust more

  • 160 hitman // Aug 4, 2008 at 19:15

harrier my mate has just paid £934 for a season ticket

  • 161 Punk Skunk // Aug 4, 2008 at 19:17

  • 162 harrier // Aug 4, 2008 at 19:18

hitman - does everybody pay 934? Or only a few? Because if the majority are paying 660 for tickets then the point is irrelevent

  • 163 normski1930z // Aug 4, 2008 at 19:20

well i paid £574 for mine….but would have paid £509 if taken over the three years.

  • 164 scottish mag // Aug 4, 2008 at 19:23

wasnt there two companies, the indian guy and the guy from singapore or something

currently there has been a statement saying that the indian bloke doesnt want to buy but we have heard nothing from the singapore guy have we??

does this mean that they are actually in for us just everyone jumped onto the richest owner an assumed it was him out of the two

there has been no mention of anyone on here saying how the want the singapore man when that was reported so why is everyone going on about the indian guy????
