Let’s Lift The Doom And Gloom On Tyneside

There doesn’t seem to be much new news today relating to Newcastle United Football Club.

Kevin Keegan – his undying enthusiasm can ignite players

The two defeats in Mallorca and the poor performance at Doncaster the week before, have caused some fans to think that the club is just not serious enough about giving Kevin what he needs.

But we’re really not too many players short of what we need for this coming season, and the squad we currently have is much improved over last year.

We’ve let some fringe players go (Emre, David Rozehnal, Stephen Carr, Peter Ramage and Lamine Diatta) and brought in Gutierrez, Guthrie and Bassong, who have looked very good signings.

It also seems we’ll bring in Coloccini sometime this week, but he must be walking over from Spain, because  it seems to be taking so long.

That would then be four good signings, although to be fair, three of them are untested in the Premier League, and that’s a bit of a risk.

But other clubs haven’t made many moves yet either, so we can expect August to be busy again, and it may go down to the wire, as it did last year.

We remember going past midnight last August 31st, and then the club announcing they had indeed captured Beye and Faye, and those two turned out to be two of our best signings last summer.

Don’t let the gossip press get us down about the club – because it does seem as if they think their job is to bash Newcastle just as often as they can.

The squad we have is good, and a possible team at Manchester United on 17th August:

Given/Harper
Beye  Coloccini Taylor (Faye)  N’Zogbia
Gutierrez Butt Guthrie (Milner) Duff
Owen Martins

That’s not a bad team at all, and there are several other formations Kevin could choose that would be just as good, if Enrique came into that team.

Let’s get Coloccini in this week (get him a taxi), and then say 3 more players in the next 3 weeks or so, and we’re in pretty good shape we think.

Keep the faith lads – we’ll get there.

Comments welcome.

Ed Stop automatically pastng Taylor in to the first 11, he is not good enough for first team (yet) and Faye should definitely be ahead of him

And N’zogbia played at left back against Man U last season and he was awful and cost us one or two goals. Enrique is better at LB

we’ll never go anywhere further than 8th place, i guess, with our current form.
the best thing that i can ever imagine us doing at the moment is get owen signing a contract(he have’nt, has he?) and then clarify oba’s status in the squad before saying tata to viduka coz his too old to kick a ball and with his speed, i doubt he can even play in championship(or even in league 1).. BUY STRIKERS, WE’RE SHORT UPFRONT!!

Interesting this ambani thing is still kicking around a couple of days after the sunday sh!!te. I think it would probably be every Geordie’s dream to have some multi billionaire take over and spend loads of money but you’re right Ed we’ve signed some good players and are only 3 or 4 short of a very good set up which has been done on the blind side of the media for once. People will obviously panic after the pre season games (and forkin out £500+ quid a year it’s understandable) but players seem happy, Kev seems determined so things’ll happen i’m sure. A bit of communication from the top would be nice tho!!!

I agree with Spyro, Taylor is a canny lad but he’s once again shown that he’s not quite good enough – just yet!

Guthrie and Butt in the middle also shows lack of creativity and I’d personally put Zog in there from what we have.

The doom will hopefully go when the season starts and the speculation stops. The problem being that we kick off with two tough games in our first three. After that we should go on a winning spree and if we don’t amass a good number of points until we play Chelsea we should be worried.

    Not long to go now!!

aqmin I agree about the striker situation.

Shola and Carroll cant be counted as first team strikers, ones for sale and the others no good, Viduka is an old player on free transfer who is a cheap addition, an excellent player if he plays but we cant expect him for every game, that leaves us with two full time prime strikers, not enough for a premiership club, we need one more otherwise no matter how the rest of the team may improve under Keegan we are gambling on fitness at the front, because we already have Carroll and Zamblera it shouldnt be another youngster either otherwise we could have three which amount to nothing.

Zamblera should be tried in the next friendly we have nothing to lose by giving him a go.

Riquelme is not a perfect signing for us in the middle, well past his best

we need another CM who is a deep laying playmaker and is comfortable defending aswell so that BUtt can be removed from the starting 11 e.g. Cigarini, Dessena, Biglia

Butt is good defensively, but he takes so much away from our creativity it is unbelieveable. I do not understand how someone who played for Man U never learnt how to pass a ball

i don´t think we should be to worried about our preformance so far. It’s been better than the last seasons in the defense. We must remember that we haven’t had a striker in the team last two games.

what do you think about us singing derdiyok? i think he’s not ready yet in the premeirship. i’ll prefer baptista over him. derdiyok is good, but not for more than 3mill. baptista’ll be a snap at less than 7mill, not more too. wonder who’ll be our signing of the season….
btw i have a sneaky feeling that we’ll play a 4-5-1 formation this season.. one lone striker, nzoggy at AM, guthrie, geremi, butt, miler at centre, with duff and gutierrez on the flanks.. hrm..

The three Wise men aren’t doing a great job at the mo. I totally agree with bringing in young players so just bring them in lads. Squad depth is a must for us. I think two more signings in Coloccini and a striker is a must by the end of this transfer window. Let’s just keep praying.
Smith can’t be let go at the moment unless we bring in a replacement for him, our squad is just too small. Think the Mallorca summer cup has done a good job of showing that.

CM definitely should be our priority as Barton will miss half the season and we will only have Butt and Guthrie, whats the point in good strikers if our CM cant supply? We will be relying on Gutierrez to create everything.

I would rather Bendtner to Derdiyok and Baptista

Assuming we get Coloccini, I think this should be our starting lineup for the Man Utd game…

    ————Given/Harper—————

    –Beye–Coloccini—Faye–Enrique–

    —Jonás—Butt–Guthrie–N’Zogbia–

    ———-Owen—-Martins————–

Subs: Harper/Given, Taylor, Geremi, Milner, Smith, Duff, Edgar

Not brilliant, personally I think with the lack of creativity in midfield we ought to go back to 4-3-3 when Viduka is back to match fitness. N’Zogbia is horribly wasted at left back and while Enrique made the mistake against Doncaster I still rate him and he has to be our starting LB.

Milner has been woeful in preseason and at least N’Zogbia and (from what we’ve seen of him) Jonas are actually capable of creating things going forward. Butt is still essential in midfield as well. Not much to choose from in the way of strikers but at least Oba and Owen can score…

I have to agree that, whilst Jose Enrique is still young and has made a few mistakes, there is no way N’Zogbia should be playing left back.

Enrique has genuine promise and will be fantastic in left back if he is given enough run outs there. He’s already got lots of quality and with a CB like Coloccini calling the shots he’ll come good quickly.

N’Zogbia is not only dreadful in LB, but he doesn’t like it there. One of the reasons he always seems to want to leave the club is that he doesn’t want to play outside his natural position(s) on the left wing, or just inside the left winger. Why don’t we just stick to playing him there, he’s very good at it.

I think that, if we had Zog and Milner in central midfield between Gutierrez and (possibly) Duff, our midfield would be a genuine threat. I’m also thinking Guthrie will make appearances there, and I’d like to see young Lualua getting more first team action.

Can’t see Keegan going for the 4-3-1-2 that worked so well at the end of last seasson, we don’t have the strikers for it unless he’s prepared to give Zamblera a run out.

Still got lots of quality in the team, even if it is depleated.

Oh yeah, and for my money, if Coloccini does sign, Taylor should always be second choice after Faye for the other CB spot. I like the lad, but we need to start keeping clean sheets. It’s also possible that Bassong could put him further down the pecking order.

Other clubs seem to target, sign and deliver within days.
Agree with selling Smith but here we go again losing millions: in for 5/6 million and sold for peanuts. If NUFC are going to do that again then why not tear up Bartons contract and cut his losses as well.

Coloccini is flying to Newcastle today to sign. It is talked about in todays issue of the Official Deportivo FC newspaper. Link: http://www.canaldeportivo.com/servlet/es.iris.servlets.DeporSport/5/2008/08/05/1

One of the posters on their message board says it only needs his signature to be complete, but other sources say he still needs to have a medical.

I think Bendtner would consider us a step down in truth, but with Vela arriving and Eduardo soon to return to a strikeforce that includes Adebayor and Van Puss, he will know that he is not going to be a first team regular. He isn’t exactly a crowd favourite over there either. We could play him in AM and ST and it would boost his current low confidence

6 or 7 million bid is worth a try, any more than that and it isn’t worth it IMO.

We all know from last season we need a CREATIVE MIDFIELDER more than anything else.

Coloccini will be a brilliant signing.

But I’d want a CM, a young Striker, and a left back before the deadline.

Take away Owen and Martins, and our three best players at the moment are our three new signings.

Hitman 16 – “so where all agreed the squad isnt good enough at the moment”

Good enough for what? We’ve got no European competition to worry about so we do not need a massive squad this season.

Yes we’re a bit light in some areas, but we had 9 first team players out on Sunday night – all of which (Viduka apart) will be back in the next week or so. Coloccini should be here in the next day or so and there’s still 3 1/2 weeks of the transfer window left – in which will undoubtedly sign another couple of players.

We have young players coming through so I say the future is a hell of a lot brighter than it has been for the last 10 years or so (during which time we have spent silly money and got no returns)

When are we finally going to sign Colloccini ffs. It takes ages, that is just not normal. Every transfer we have done seems to take ages and other teams do it immediately. Where is the ambition?

And we desperetaly need a creative player, cause we haven’t got anyone.

If I could choose i would pick those:
    1 Colloccini
    2. Shorey
    3. Arshavin
    4. Derdyiok
    5. Inler

At least 5 quality players to bring in and they will all strengthen our squad. Let SMith go to Everton so we recover £1.5m from the incomings.

Is it so hard to get 1 of those? What is happening?
