Midfield Star To Arrive At Newcastle - But Who Is It?

August 5th, 2008 · 320 Comments

We believe that Newcastle will be bringing in another central midfield player before the end of the month, but we have no idea who that may be.

gokhan-inler.jpg

Gokhan Inler - good central midfield player

Our best guess would be Swiss International Gokhan Inler, and we’ve reported on him a number of times this summer.

Since it now looks like Joey Barton will be banned for some number of games, it’s almost certain Newcastle will need another central midfield player before the end of the month.

We reported this morning, in our transfer news piece , that there were reports in Swiss newspapers, that Inlier’s agent was traveling to London to speak with Arsene Wernger, the Arsenal boss, but it’s not clear he’s first choice for the London club.

It seems like he may be their back-up choice, in case they cannot get Xabi Alonso from Liverpool.

But the Swiss International seems to be interesting English clubs, but that’s coming from his agent, so that may not even be too accurate.

However, there has been no official offers from any club yet, and that includes Arsenal. His club, Udinese Calcio, are saying they would rather keep him, but that’s the normal response from a club to increase the price.

The player’s agent Dino Lamberti told Setanta Sports:

“In the case we received an official offer we would carefully study it with Udinese’s permission.”

“The Premier League is interesting for him, and they are one of the best leagues in the world with the Spanish and the Italian ones.”

“We didn’t speak with Arsene Wenger, but yes, some English clubs asked for information about the player.”

This situation may heat up in the next few days, although we’re a little surprised Newcastle haven’t moved more quickly for a player who looked really good at Euro 2008, and had an excellent first season with Italian club Udinese last year.

Who else could Newcastle bring in this month for central midfield?

Comments welcome.

ed that headline got me too excited. thought some mystery midfielder had agreed terms. i wouldnt bank on a midfielder coming even though i think we badly need one. we have guthrie/butt/geremi/milner vying for two spots and KK loves those 4 players.

  • 2 keltik // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:16

as things stand i am very worried for the new season.

i gave Ashley the excuse that we werent that active last summer because Allerdyce was not his choice, and he had just bought the club and some said he was getting the clubs finances back in order, then i said last Winter that we didnt buy anyone because the winter window is tough and Keegan wanted to tough it out until the summer and save the cash.

Now their is almost 3 weeks left of the window and we have bought:

    Guthrie (unproven, backup player, imo)
    Guttierrez (hopefully new start winger)
    Bassong (unknown youth)

we really need at least 3 top quality signings before the new season starts, probably 2 defenders and 1 striker.

without these 3 key players we will have to play Enrique left back who i hope will adapt to the english game and step up, we have Faye & Tayls in CB although when one gets injured we will have to go to Bassong, who is unproven and young.

Then the strikers, Viduka is injured (suprise S
suprise) and now Owen will miss the new season. We all know Oba can pick up the odd knock but lets hope not because even with him upfront on his own we struggle, and if we dont have him we will have to play say Smith upfront with Milner or something.

if you look at our options and then look at the teams we are supposed to be competing with, Spurs, Portsmouth, Villa, and only a couple of years ago Liverpool… i remember Liverpool being a grate rival cuz we had a few tustles for 3rd and 4th sport under Bobby Robson but now when you talk about those days people look like your mad.

anyway, the only thing that annoys me more than no signings is that we have employed at least 3 ‘executives’ to do these sorts of deals, i mean why not go out and seal some deals before the end of the season like Spurs did with Modric?? surely the 3 new ‘executives’ had the time on their hands.

i mean whats going on? i know the market is tough but even Sunderland are more active than us, and thats depressing.

sorry to vent im just getting worried about the state of our club, we dont have much longer…. i feel this could be a very serious season for us unless we sign a number of key players.

    Collocini ……..????

Signing a player over the weekend ??

    Bull pizzle.

With no investment, we are down.

  • 7 Leo // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:19

bit of a sensational headline, have you heard something ed?

i agree though we do need another midfielder due to mister barton

damn it, maybe we will get a good midfielder then we will find out barton is not going to be further punshed- SCORE

  • 8 Michael // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:21

There was no need to have a headline like that. The last thing people want now is false hope.

  • 9 GraemeR // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:21

OK - the truth is I am signing tommorow and will be rolled out a Half Time.

47, cultured left foot - not one for the future - especially with the arthiritis. Can run all day providing you are buying the diesel and at 5 foot 1 ” will not be picked on by the likes of Terry or Ferdi

i agree we badly need a cm who can create perhaps joao moutinho would be a good buy thats if we could get him but i genuinly believe that after colloccini comes in wem ay bring in a lband that will be it though in jan we may wait to see if there is an unknown some where who can potentially be world class ok its a bit ambitious but i am only thinking this year if we had bought arshavin in jan we may be a lot better off maybe there is someone like that who we can bring in coz knowing kk if something is nt right he willtry and get some one for the job

You’d better be careful Ed You might be The Sun’s next sport’s editor…..

  • 14 Mad_Magpie // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:24

Great post keltik. I don’t see us buying 3 players in a fortnight, although maybe by the end of August. I know transfers take long in the modern game but we’ve had plenty of time, things have been too slow. As soon as the final whistle blew at Everton, we should have been searching for what we need, maybe even before. New arrivals needed to have come before our tour of Mallorca ideally but there is no point in dwelling on that now. Get the players in sharpish!

  • 15 hitman // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:25

second that paddyq, bang out of order

  • 17 Alex // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:25

Howie I thought the same thing .Was starting to get excited .Inler would be a brilliant signing but somehow don’t think we are interested or surely we would of at least put a bid in by now.

  • 18 joe // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:25

ed that headline is a disgrace - i’m in marbella and out of the loop a bit - i reckon you need to alter it a bit!!! Benayoun would be the player i went for - especially as Liverpool want Barry.

  • 19 Toonboy // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:26

Dunno about a midfielder, whats going on with collicini???

I think it’ll be annouce it aboot 5pm tomorrow so it’ll still give people enough time to get a ticket for the match and see him unvailed, what you think???

  • 20 Leo // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:28

i dont actually think its the investment thats the problem i think it is the recruitment, they have no ability at closing the deal, something strange about wise being the head of recruitment when he has not done it at any level that would excite anyone

can they seriously only work on one deal at a time,

i asked the question tomyself about the weekend, what happened to finishing a deal within 24hours, do they work with a spanish watch, no offence but the attitude of the recruitment must be like a spanish building site everyone lying back on their chairs chaning ah manyana (spelling isnt right there)

  • 21 GraemeR // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:28

Here is my dream day - 6th August

At 1pm the club announce a press conference for 3pm.
Anal Oliver cant make it (YES)
Sky give a live feed and there is 7 chairs behind the conference table with KK in the middle. After the normal chit chat KK announces that he is here to present new signings for NUFC and proceeds to roll out Inlar, Derdiyok, Moutinho, Colocconi, Burdisso and Riquelme. After teh normal chat with each of hte players and photos KK announces one more player and open the curtains to reveal KAKA on the SJP pitch juggling and generally wowing the rest of the squad.

    Cumon Ashers make it so

  • 24 Ciaran // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:30

I’d imagine we’ve made an offer for Inler but he’s waiting to see if Arsenal come in for him. If the situation goes on for too long hopefully Skeljbrad is lined up as an alternative. We really badly need a creative midfielder. It’s so frustrating to have lightning, intelligent strikers like Oba and Owen but nobody to play a killer final ball to them. Milner is average, Geremi goes missing constantly, Guthrie is a squad player with promise and despite a lot of support from this site, Butt is very close to finished.

  • 29 GraemeR // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:34

Do u thing hte open day is a trial for the Geordie wannabees - remember Alan Shoulder and the Waddler were found in the local lower leagues

  • 30 Edinburgh Mag // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:34

I think we need 2 central midfielders. Our current midfield is far too stagnant. There is no urgency whatsoever when any of our CM’s pick up the ball. Everything is so slow and one paced. A ball winner & a creative midfielder is where i think we should be looking. Our current CM’s should be squad players at best if we’re wanting to make any sort of improvement on last season, in my opinion.

  • 31 chuck // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:35

Dont want Inler, let me clarify that, dont want him if we can get Muotinho or Veloso instead.
I see an unhealthy approach here in our dealings
looks like we are not going for top quality, that price is the deciding factor and we will accept second best.
Well thats fine if your ambitions are to just survive in the PL, with the hope of getting lucky and getting a UAFA spot.
Now if the ownership want to challenge for a top spot, going to have to go for top players.
Dont have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one.

    ED

I’m not a one for criticising but i really did think that we were close to a good midfield player and the first name that sprung to mind believe it or not was XABI or XAVI from Barca cant remember which one, i know a stupid thing to think but my hopes had risen only to be dashed lol anyway not to worry :)

  • 43 daiv // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:55

Amid all the turmoil Ashley has spoken and said…….nuffin. He has contempt for the fans and treats NUFC as his cheap plaything. We will sign a player worth £10 mil or more because season ticket sales are rubbish and he knows it. He does not want a stadium one third empty. He will buy because his hand has been forced. bring on the Asian guy please. MA is a dud.

any one agree that promises keep bein made like signings need to be made beginning of season so they have time to gell in kk press confrence when he became manager he said the chairman had the same ambitions and that we wanted to be back where we were when he left and he’d get the funds to buy the players, no funds. new signing in 24 hrs, what a load of rubbish. even sunderland make more signings than us and newly promoted clubs this is a joke we r definately gonna get relegated also all our best players are injury prown so u can forget about them for half the season. e.g owen, viduka, martins ish duff . in my opinion we need 3 players to finnish like we did last season and 5 if were gonna get a uefa place but none will come so well be relegated great. any other views

Agree with sensational headline comment. Let’s face it the club is poor and all the muppets under 18 expecting kaka signings need to p*ss of and support manure or chelski. More cuts to come and further falls in the league.

  • 66 sirjasontoon // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:23

Maybe Rangers will sell Cueller on the cheap now.

  • 67 Graham // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:26

you lot want to go and stand in the corner and have have a word with yourselves.

Yes we need a couple more players in but we’ve over 3 weeks to do it.

Yes, we were crap last season but that was largely down to a fat, tactless, egotistical manager whoput his own reputation above the clubs - even to this day!!

We would all love to have the players in now but how many other clubs have signed more than 3? Not many! And of the ones that have, only spurs have added on a par than the likes of Guttierez and Coloccini (when he signs). These two Argys will be immense for us this season.

And as for the Ashley bashers, our club is set for the future not for administration, unlike the previous regime. He has bought and stabalised the the club (but not the fans by the comments above), why not use the clubs money to bring in players? I would rather have a season or two building from the ground upwards than Ashley spending his own money and then calling in the debt, just like what Ambramovich will do at Chelsea if things dont right over the next couple of years.

Have some confidence in your club, have some faith in what they’re doing.

How often do you here Ambramovich speking to the press? You don’t so why do you expect Ashley to publicise his affairs?

I had to give up my season ticket a couple of years ago for several reasons, but i’ve decided to go and renew tomorrow - show the faith that makes us Geordies famous and stop acting like a bunch of drama queens.

    Thank you, rant over

  • 75 Mad_Magpie // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:38

People have to be patient on Colo, he’s probably traveling over today, as reported in Spain, before doing his medical and signing a contract tomorrow morning before being presented at SJP at tomorrow’s game.

  • 76 Bmore // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:39

Is there any news on Arda signing for anyone yet? Last I heard he was interested in moving to Italy?

  • 77 SniffyPants // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:41

Midfield isn’t the real problem now, is it - fitting our best midfielders into a formation is more of a problem, along with the current enforced reliance on our weaker strikers, and the need to settle on a preferred back 4. We now have wingers a plenty, though only Zoggie has any real pace out wide, Butt, Guthrie, Barton and even Smith to sit in the middle… a couple of seasons ago we made the same mistake of snapping up every midfielder that came our way. If Owen, Oba and Viduka stay fit we have limited options, if our midfield stay fit we have limited options, and even if our defence stays fit we have limited options there too. A creative midfielder won’t support a weak back 4, a creative midfielder won’t find a killer pass to a slow winger, and a creative midfielder won’t be able to thread a ball through to unfit, misfiring strikers. Never mind a creative midfielder - we need a goal-scoring, mean, selfish midfielder, who can run around to beat the band like a devil in tight little shorts and bang them in from the edge of the box himself. Or failing that, run into the box at pace and fall over, playing for penalties like a one-trick pony.

  • 78 fraser 2k8 // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:43

Bmore, the last i heard on Arda was that KK had renewed his interest in him about 2 weeks ago, though i doubt that he will go to Italy as he prefers the PL. Also Matias F, wants to go to Lazio (finished 12th last season so not in european football), newcastle should choose him as the creative midfielder.

I don’t think that is necessary. I am sure that Geremi could perform well in a defensive central midfield position. KK also wants to try Milner in the centre. An attacking versatile midfielder/ forward may be a really good option though.

  • 82 mart // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:47

There may be 3 weeks left but I’m concerned to say the least, when we’ve had the whole summer. Ok the European games got in the way but we were expecting things to move on the transfer front as soon as that tournament was over.
KK said at the end of last season his main priority was getting MO signed up on a new contract. Well hasn’t that all gone quiet.
We had too small a squad last season to cope with injuries. Now we have less players and seemingly more injuries.
I tell you what - I hope someone is working hard behind the scenes to get more new and better players in, cos I for one have seen this all before and really am worried about next season.
To those who say stop panicking there’s plenty of time - I hope yer right.

  • 83 Broadsword // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:48

I really wish you would quit it with the misleading headlines. You’re not newcastleunitedmad.co.uk you know.

Its sad if that’s how you think you will attract visitors.

  • 84 Tore Torell // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:49

What’s with the heading, Ed… Very The Sun-ish!

I think Toon should focus on an attacking midfielder as well, and a double swoop from Real Madrid should be considered. 12m for Baptista and Saviola anyone? Real Madrid fuc..d us on the Owen-deal (17m for a super-prone player…), so now they should offer us a bit of discount.

  • 85 Leeg123 // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:50

do u beleive dc mags comments about moutinho to newcastle being leaked

  • 86 mozza // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:53

anyone here reckon we’ll have signed 3-4 players before the start of the season, because if we haven’t its another season doon the sh**er, come on man ashley prove me wrong

  • 87 Mark malta // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:55

I think we need another 6 first team and a dozen res!!! And hopefully we be up there… like we are now it’s relegation struggle once again.

  • 88 Dondatta13 // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:56

Tore Torell, swings and round abouts, we sold them a croc (woodgate) who took months and months to get fit for Madrid, then in his first game, he scored an own goal and got himself sent off!

Doubt we will be spending 10-12 Mill a player after (if) we get Coloccini mate, Think more “shrewd” signings might take place thou’

  • 89 ronaldeano // Aug 5, 2008 at 20:59

To the ‘i love Mike Ashley mob’….

At the end of this window, if we havent got they players we need, will you still think he is such a godsend?

Or will you think that he is just a cheap skate conman thats using our club for his own financial gain?

I hope we get the players we need

  • 90 STF // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:01

I personally am happy with the work being carried out regarding signing new players. We have brought in players so far that improve the team / squad and while I have been concerned over the time its taking Curly to sign I am now confident it shall be announced tomorrow before the game, if not then my enthusiasm takes a beating and I will lose all hope of Colo singing for us. Yes we do need more and I think they will come however the Toon was not built in a day and neither is the completion of a clubs footballing transformation.

    Regards

  • 91 tino97 // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:06

A few people have mentioned Cuellar from Rangers, the reason he wanted to stay was to play champions league football. I think he would leave now. He would be a good signing along with Coloccini. (whenever that happens)

  • 92 Rikki // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:06

What ever happened to the intrest of Arda Turan (Galatasaray) ? I think we badly need a creative midfielder for next season.

  • 93 51times // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:06

normski - Hey, at least we (we being Rangers in this case) got this far, this only means we’ll win the league. You fenians will be too busy abusing children.

    Big Jock Knew.

  • 94 harrier // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:07

ronaldeano - have you ever thought there might be a position in between?

  • 95 Leeg123 // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:07

opinion of dc mags comments regarding moutinho saying info has leaked

  • 96 samvil // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:10

Graham - I agree with you.

And as you say, we do need to bring players in and i’d love an AM, but i don’t think that’s gonna happen.

KK has said there are enough players in midfield and up front and that he hopes to sign ONE or TWO more.

I think it’s Coloccini and a left back, but I hope there are more to follow.

  • 101 Shearer#1 // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:15

What happened to our interest in midfielders like Turan, Sahin, Giles Barnes? There are lots of good midfielders still available like Moutinho, Veloso, Inler, De Jong, De La Red. We need 1.

  • 102 Tom Cairns // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:17

sunderland may be active but not one of them would make it into our first team, name a team outside the top 4 that have made signings superior to ours.

With deportivo I have everything arranged, correct, so I do not need to go to the club, the only thing i need to sign will be in Newcastle.”

NEEED C.B (COLLOCINI) … L.B (WARNOCK) … C.M (INLER OR BAPTISTA) … C.F (DIRDIOK) … NOT 2 MENTION A FEW YOUNG PLAYERS IF WE ARE EVEN GOING 2 COMPETE WITH THE TOP 8 BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL BUYING LIKE MAD … AM NOT INCLUDING BASSONG BTW ;)

  • 109 Tom Cairns // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:22

and STF i agree with you, this is not a quick fix, tried before and failed miserably.

i do really enjoy reading all the comments on this blog but quite often i wish some people would stop dramatizing every story that comes out.

  • 110 ToonEskimo // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:23

    Toonboy,
I speak fluent Spanish, Curly’s not coming, something about wages being a stumbling block…… :(

  • 111 toon up // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:23

There is still not a lot going on in the transfer market lads. I know its frustrating because we all know we are short of players. I’m getting a bit frustrated for the first time because of the collocini signing (or lack of it) its just the silence from the club that is annoying, at least a short update to keep us all relaxed would help. We will sign because we must sign. I honestly think KK is looking to shift a couple of players out and we will surely have bids in for a few players where the selling club is trying to drive a hard bargain. It will all kick off nearer the end of the transfer window imo. We are after quality not el haj, Tainio, Malbranque et al who are imo average premiership players (although they will move sunderland on a bit this season, because they are so crap)

One thing is for sure Ashley and KK will be totally aware of the high levels of frustration amongst the fans so they know if we dont sign there will be hell on in the toon, absolutely hell.

  • 112 Toonboy // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:24

  • 115 nick // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:28

    toon boy

“The day that this be finished and all be signed i would like to say good-bye of the fondness as corresponds, but when be the moment, when be all resolved. Now what I want is that be finished as soon as possible, and alone later to say good-bye, but for now I prefer to be tranquil and a little to the margin. When he be done do not I know if some days will give me to come here, and if I will not say good-bye through the press”, commented Coloccini, that desires to be said good-bye of the fondness of the Sports one of the best possible form.

On the current situation of its acquisition by the Newcastle, the Argentine said that itself “they have to confirm it now, after the training, but tomorrow or past I will pass recognition in Newcastle, but we are waiting for that the two clubs finish its agreements, because they remain pending details, so I do not want to speak a lot since this is not finished”. “With the Sports one I have all fixed, correct, so I need to go for nothing by the club. The unique thing that would have that to sign would be in Newcastle”, added to explain more in depth its situation and thus to conclude its statement.

haha sorry eskimo - i was too quick for ya ;)

@toonboy - no probs, he said similar things yesterday, and he has said he expects things to be done by tomorrow. Maybe we are busy tieing up another deal at the same time :o

  • 118 boater // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:29

There is so much speculation on here… I can’t believe half of yees.
We really don’t know what is going on, if we are actually interested in Derdiyok, Iner, Arda - Or why we are failing to get them if so…. Wise, Ashley, KK… who knows anything for sure??

KK and mcdermott have both gone on a limb to promise signings… so they will come.
We still have oba and owen - touch wood - and that wasn’t looking too good at one point.

it’s depressing to see you all referring to Milner as a central midfielder all of a sudden… but it’s true we are grasping at straws at the moment…
we were crap in midfield last season - and that was with Emre (occasionally albeit).

I think what KK said about only bringing in top quality is the most important thing…. if the 3 signings are anything to go by… he’s looking for players off the beaten path that he can motivate in his own way…. we could end up 3rd or relegated next season… who knows… the toon is so daft you can’t predict owt.
