There were some deriding cheers from the Newcastle fans on Sunday night, when the 27-year-old Alan Smith attempted a shot at goal, in Newcastle’s match against Real Mallorca.

Alan Smith - striker hasn’t yet scored in 37 senior games for the club
The Yorkshireman was signed by Sam Allardyce last summer for £6M from Manchester United, and hasn’t scored yet in a senior game for the club.
Many of those games, to be fair, were in midfield, or out on the right wing, when Big Sam was manager.
Kevin talked about Alan today:
“Alan’s confidence is okay but he will always work hard,â€
“But we haven’t done a lot of finishing yet, not much work with the strikers. Now we will be able to do that.â€
On Sunday, Smith was Newcastle’s only fit striker, and it’s not surprising we failed to score for our third game in a row.
As we had suggested yesterday, we’re just not sure what’s wrong with Alan right now, because he’s a much better player than he’s been showing for the club recently.
Usually that’s a confidence thing, but if Kevin thinks that’s OK, it’s got to be something else. But now Smith is in danger of being shipped out with Ameobi, before the end of this month.
If we do transfer him, we’ll lose quite a bit of money, and Everton had the cheek today to offer £1.5M for him - but we need more than that to let him go, that’s for sure.
Comments welcomed.

am i the only one getting sick to death with hearing news about Alan Smith everyday? IMO he is a pointless player therefore news about him is pointless. Even news about him leaving is pointless because even when he is here he actually isnt if ya no wat i mean. waste of space (sorry if that sounded harsh but its the truth)

He needs to prove to all of us that he can do a job, that he’s actually useful to the team. Based on his performances since we’ve signed him I would put most of our teenage reserves in the side before him! Since he’s been here he’s been a hopeless midfielder who gives free kicks away in dangerous areas, picks up needless yellow cards for badly executed challenges and has played as a striker who can’t even get a decent shot on target.
Why is he in the team? I would so much rather have lazy/injury prone/etc players who occasionally pop up with something awesome, e.g., Dyer, Emre than him.
He’s had his chance to prove to us that he deserves to be in the starting lineup while his competition is out injured, so as far as I’m concerned he’s got until Martins and Owen are fit again to prove he’s up to the job, else he can f**k off somewhere else for all I care.

I would rather see Taylor stuck in as a make shift striker, at least the opposition would know he was there and he has scored some good goals. Which is more than you can say for the Invisible man
12 t-g-w // Aug 5, 2008 at 12:27
I do actually feel sorry for the lad. Was a great player at Leeds, got a big move to Man U, played very well for them at first and had an excellent goal-scoring record. But then Van Nistelrooy walked back into the team having been injured. And then he was never the same player after Sir Alex tried to convert him into a midfielder and after that injury.
That said, he is no longer good enough to be at this club. Get rid even for £1.5 million.
13 domtoon // Aug 5, 2008 at 12:28
It’s cos he came from Man U and has now lost trace of any form he once had.
Whoever said we should stop reading about Smith is correct - he is a nothing, pointless, waste of space and anyone defending him, please direct me to 3 defining moments he has made a difference to our squad.
Even with the some of the dire performances we put in last season, the other players contributed in some way, but this man Smith, he just runs and runs and runs. Energetic, hard-working yes, but productive and of utility to the squad - NO!!!
How long has it been since he scored a goal?? Looooong time.
Sorry - rant over.

17 Ian // Aug 5, 2008 at 12:37
Our problem isnt Alan Smith, our problem is that when we have injuries we do not have a player who was originally employed as a first team striker to step in to the role.
Alan Smith was employed as a midfielder because he was better in that role and no good as a striker because he didnt score enough goals.
None of the midfield players score enough goals, KK has identified the problem and is working on it, we need all of our midfield to score more goals and Smith to start scoring goals, it may be us the fans getting on their case putting them off, other players or just historic poor coaching but it needs resolving.
Look at the list of low first team scorers, Parker, Emre, Duff, Milner, Barton, NZogbia, Smith, Ameobi, Carroll and so on, we have a historic problem which needs sorting.
18 Ian // Aug 5, 2008 at 12:39
looney toon and Sibieski was a midfielder!!
Again looked upon as a low scoring striker!! He should have been given a two year contract and moved back in to midfield.
19 faustino // Aug 5, 2008 at 12:40
Realistically they’ll give him another season. The chances he’ll be in our 09/10 squad will depend on the next 12 months. But he will be here next season.

It baffles me to think that he used to play for Man U. That wee lad not only played but started a lot of games, the other players loved him, praised him and such. The games he played he was actually pretty impressive, especially that 7-1 win, he inspired the other players, because he’d be running down the ball and such, working really hard..etc..
He was a good enough player once upon a time, just one wee question..
What the hell happened?!?!
24 domtoon // Aug 5, 2008 at 12:48
Ameobi is a bad joke. Ideally we need to replace them both, but I accept your point Faustino that Smith will stay next season.
Thing is - Smith was once great, but like I said - I can see no trace of any of his old form. The best footballers make do and score goals no matter the circumstances, but he, just, does, nothing!!
It’s so infuriating because I just want the team to do well :’o(.
25 Michael // Aug 5, 2008 at 12:49
Alan Smith was overrated at Leeds because he was young and English. Peaked in his early twenties and has only reached double figures in the league once. Ferguson tried to convert him to a midfielder to save his career, but it failed. I bet Fergie couldn’t stop laughing when we bid 6 million for a dreadful midfielder/ below average forward.

Yes Smith has generally been very poor for us but he was man of the match against Arsenal at home, and scared the life out of their defenders with his commitment. As for Keegan backing him, what’s he supposed to do?? Slag the lad off? I’m sure that will improve his confidence! We have FIVE strikers injured at the moment so we will have to put up with Smith and support him when he is on the pitch. Unfortunately its entirely predictible that he will get booed by a large number of fans which helps no one.

Ok so Ernie and his crew have brought in some good (we hope) prospects for the future but which league are they going to be playing in?

Players will only get boooed if they are playing rubbish. If they are playing ok even if they do not score then they will get cheered.
Most of the booing last season was justified as it will be this season if we get more of the same.
We geordies are very passionate about our team but we can only respond to what is happening on the pitch. If Smith suddenly changed from a duck to a swan, as Butt did last year, then the fans will be right behind him. I wouldn’t be putting money on this happening though.

Keegan must be holding out for a bit more to see if he can reproduce some sense of the ability he had that got him to ManU in the first place. I imagine he’ll hang around till January as a last chance and then be sold off to Hull or Stoke if/when he doesn’t come good.

The point i’m making is that it’s not his fault he’s crap. But we dont have any other alternatives, unless we throw in kids in their nappies. He will always give 100% so there is nothing to gain from booing him on the pitch.
51 toon toon.... // Aug 5, 2008 at 13:51
he’s simply not good enough if this club wants to improve on last season. when he signed ive got to be honest I thought it was a decent signing (had a cracker against roma in the champions league for man utd which came to mind). i also cant remember many people at the time criticsing the signing, however after watching him all last season he seems to be versatile enough i.e. willing enough to play in different roles but doesnt make enough impact to change matches. if everton or any others showed interest then kk got to be seriously considering it even if just to get him off the wage bill! if no money available then loan signings would have to be used otherwise gonna look bigger jokers away to man utd than last years debacle.

Smith has always given 100% in a toon shirt and I respect him for that. I agree he wouldn’t be in my starting line up and yes, I’d probably let him go once we’ve brought some more talent in. But come on, he earned the captain’s armband at one point. Give the lad a break.

Either that or sign beattie from Sheff utd & tell them they can have smith! both these guys are much better than smith! why are we not going for crespo? he hasn’t got a club has he?
61 Ian // Aug 5, 2008 at 14:20
Bill F, Cisse is available for £8m but his club do not want to let him go.
Last count he scored 6 goals in 7 pre season matches. He is for buttons compared to others in the market.
We need someone such as him, have Viduka as the ‘older’ player to be brought on to replace someone injured or to try and turn a match, then a youngster to try and make something of, I dont think Carroll is the man but he is all we have at the moment.
Cisse is easily the best player avaialble for the money, he has the same goals to appearances as Owen but is younger, if the player isnt recommended on the Sun back page managers and scouts dont seem to want them, Hughes is messing about trying to get him on a loan, now is our chance.

He was injured for a chunk of last season and Marseille were struggling but once he came back and regained match fitness they shot up the league.
I know a lot of people on the blog don’t rate him because of his prior history but he has had some bad injuries and bad luck. Admittedly he might be something of a gamble but if we got the real Cisse he would be a diamond.

I really do not understand it, all of his matches are televised and providing you dont read the wrong statistics that some dodgy websites issue and look at official figures all of his appearances and goals are logged!!
It doesnt take a genius to calculate up his goals and his value to a club. He doesnt do bad things he is just an extrovert with dodgy hairstyles and clothes but he is French and Ginola used to do the same!!
I know you like him you said before, he would turn next season round when combined with our current line up, no problem at all.

81 Ian // Aug 5, 2008 at 15:28
DC Magpie in a poll of Liverpool supporters they rated Torres, Gerrard then Cisse as their best goalscorers!
They appear to think the same as some of us, Rafa dumped on him after he took over because Cisse was the previous manager’s signing and stuck him out on the wing, like Allerdyce did with Martins. Cisse broke a leg and Rafa used it as an excuse to get rid of him, if he hadnt he wouldnt have had to spend £19m on Keane!! As Kuyt didnt work out for him.
Cisse gets a very warm welcome off the Liverpool fans even though he wasnt there long due to Rafa.
He has scored one out of every two matches his whole career and is third top striker in the French league 1 (top league).
The quality football press always speaks well of him, the main press sound as if he couldnt kick a ball.

93 Eyeball // Aug 5, 2008 at 15:45
Im with you there Mozza, Larsson is quality, good engine and was one of the PL best at Freekicks last season!! he can take over from geremi on freekicks and milner on crosses (whose were shocking against Mallorca)
94 Bill F SPLASH THE CASH ASH // Aug 5, 2008 at 15:46
Mozza you never now, there might still be stuff going on in the background. Bit like a swimming duck again.
95 Punk Skunk // Aug 5, 2008 at 15:46
mozza, yes Larsson would kick ass for us!..
96 C // Aug 5, 2008 at 15:47

97 MMNUFC // Aug 5, 2008 at 15:49
Along the headlines on nufc.co.uk a test page has just come up…something about to go up me thinks!
98 CRAIGG // Aug 5, 2008 at 15:51
I would take Cisse over Smith anyday.
Its actually quite a significant day as its the one year aniversary of Alan Smiths only goal in a newcastle shirt.
Antoine Sibierskis birthday showing you can still get players who give their all, care for the club they represent and put their families happiness over money.
Also the aniversary of Terry Hibbitts death showing wingers from yorkshire used to be able to cross a ball.
99 harrier // Aug 5, 2008 at 15:52

104 mozza // Aug 5, 2008 at 15:58

105 DanToon // Aug 5, 2008 at 15:59

106 Ian // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:02
When Smith first came to Newcastle where there any fans who copied his hair style??
just thinking, if Cisse arrives and he WOULD score goals so he would have a lot of fans like Martins, there will be some odd looking flamers down the quayside!!!!!!
107 mozza // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:03
right lads of for me tea back in a bit
108 steve // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:05
AT LAST - SOME GOOD NEWS
Rooney out of opener with Toon!!!
So thats, Nani (suspended) Anderson (olympics) Ronaldo injured and Rooney (virus)
It’ll still be tough but if we can get Martins / Owen fit get Collocini in and poss creative midfielder we might actually get something out the game - wahooo
109 ObaFan // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:06
Rooney is out of the united game, along Ronaldo, Andersson and Nani-maybe a draw is on the cards….but i doubt it!
110 fraser 2k8 // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:07
@ Dantonn no. 83, love the team lad, hopefully we will buy baptista and fernandez and the 4-1-3-2 is good formation.
111 CRAIGG // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:10
Ian i never copied his hair but i stupidly got his name on the back of my shirt.
I honestly had a vision of Smith and Viduka linking really well like their days at Leeds and it looked like i was right on his debut when he scored but…
I certainly cannot hate smith as i watched him murder our CBs for leeds but he must be sold he brings nothing and we should cut our losses if Everton bid.
112 steve // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:13
I reckon we could prob get Everton to stump up 3 million maybe we could get 4.5 mil if we offer shola and smith as a forward pairing and hope he’s never actually seen them play together
113 Ian // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:14
Craigg, I honestly think with the right coaching he could get it back, but like you we have to concentrate on this season,
well if Cisse came and they copied him, this is what the quayside and club hairstyles would be like!!! Look for the one with the blue number 9 shirt made for us that one!!

114 Punk Skunk // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:14
steve,
but if they don’t have their ‘best’ team out, it clearly states in the manure/fa rules, that if we beat a depleated manure, we only get 1 point!..
…Legend!..
115 Macas // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:25
My mate is a Liverpool fan and he thought Cisse was awful, a total headless chicken
116 CRAIGG // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:25
IAN
I would love him to get it back but he is a pale shadow of that player, He did have the odd highlight last season the Arsenal Bolton and Everton matches where he looked decent but he’s just hit an all time low with the matches in mallorca.
117 Ian // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:38
I agree Craigg Smith is better moving on.
Cisse on the other hand!!
Macas, he was brought in as a striker but shoved out on the right wing, he isnt a winger even though he looked good and fast it wasnt the right position for him, I follow the player when I can on TV, there is loads of stuff on youtube if you watch him in a more central position he is an excellent player (look for the matches not the fan club stuff). If you judge him as a winger he isnt brilliant, but that would be the same as judging Martins as a player on the wing when Allerdyce shoved him out there. If you look at his goalscoring record compared to a winger at Liverpool it is decent. Away from Liverpool match it against strikers. That is the problem, Shearer is right, move about on the pitch and it knacks up your career.
Cisse plays best just right of centre, an Andy Johnson type of position.
He has an amazing goalscoring record almost identical to Owens but Cisse is younger, I also think Cisse is getting better with age not worse he seems to have looked after himself better than many footballers.
118 Ralphy B // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:44
This is my first time on this site, so hi. Was just wondering if all the fans on here slating Smudge are the same fans that slated Butt after his first season? The lad nearly lost his career putting his neck on the line for Utd and he gives nothing less for the toon. Give him a chance. Kev knows what hes doing and AF knows a player when he sees one. Keep the faith and give the lad the support he deserves. He will come good.
119 Macas // Aug 5, 2008 at 16:56
Well he couldn’t be worse than Smith, although I doubt we will have the money for another striker, I kind of think we will end up with Coloccini, another LB and a creative midfielder.
120 azim // Aug 5, 2008 at 17:03
get rid of him at 2.5m and further 1.5m depending on his performances ..4m good deal
121 Ian // Aug 5, 2008 at 17:45
Macas maybe not even the creative midfielder I guess.
There isnt long now till the end of the window.
122 normski1930z // Aug 5, 2008 at 17:49
transferwindow now= 3 weeks and 4 days.
123 DC Magpie // Aug 5, 2008 at 18:27
@ Ian (and other Cisse advocates)
I have a lot of Scouse friends and while they liked Cisse’s eccentric hair styles and freakish acceleration they all joked about how useless he was in front of goal. I mean in terms of composure in front of goal he makes Dyer look like Gary Lineker! We already have a Martins at the club and I just don’t see how the two would work together.
Much rather spend the money on Derdiyok, Larsson, Inler, Moutinho, & Constant Djapka or Tawio
124 M. Stockley // Aug 5, 2008 at 18:32
milner and smith in ex for lescott wouldnt be so bad! everton have been reportly intrested in milner some time ago…. if they want smith then this is a deal id go for tbh, id throw in half the squad if they gave us lescott and cahill!
125 Ian // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:09
DC Magpie there is no one you could buy for £8m who has that hit record, his composure is excellent if that is from other sources then your sources are rubbish.
3rd top scorer in French League 1?? Come on. Scored every other game, fast strikers score out of a few attempts, no-one can be that fast and score 100% of the time out of every attempt, that is what he relies on speed and instinct, I watch that player a lot and often you have to replay a few times to see how he put it in he is so fast.
Another wind up I think!
126 irish_toon9 // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:13
Eamon Dunphy on Cisse..
“Here we have Cisse, right wing, attempts to put in a cross, BANG…hits the full back, again BANG hits the full back, BANG…off the full back again, and once more, BANG…smacks the full back again…. Millions of euro and he can’t clear the first man, I mean…what’s he trying to do to the full back here, Kill him??”
For laughs il throw in a few more from him…
On Sergio Ramos:
“He’s a nothing player, he’s like Paul McShane on steroids, costs more but just as likely to get you shot in the head.”
On John Hartson:
“Bill, Hartson is not a 7million pound player…it’s a disgrace, a shambles! This is the state of football today Bill. I have a clip here of why Hartson is NOT a £7million player….Roll it there Bill!(literally 1 second in to the clip) OKAY, HOLD IT THERE BILL!!! (draws a circle around Hartson’s arse) Bill, that is NOT the arse of a £7million player!”
On the very hostile boardroom at Real Madrid:
“Bill, Bill… those directors over there are on another planet. They’re on mushrooms or something…THEY’RE ON ACID BILL!!!”
On Harry Kewell:
“Kewell should have been yanked off the pitch at half time and put in a hot bath, a boiling hot bath.”
“Fat and a clown. A fat clown for all to see”
127 Ian // Aug 5, 2008 at 19:23
Have you seen the advert where he strikes the wall about 5 times, they were brave I wouldnt have stood there!!!
His scoring is unbelievable the list that DC gives there is crap compared to Cisse’s record, it is an incredible scoring record, it matches Owens appearances to goals ratios and Owen’s problem has never been scoring it is appearing through injuries, Owen has an amazing scoring record and this player matches it, for £8m.
I think he will probably stay at Marseille one more season, be a top three scorer again, win back his place from Gomis or another player in the French team, then he will come to England for a silly transfer fee. If another club buys him this year we can sit and watch him and someone can tell me again about this composure problem he has!!
What should he be doing averaging a goal per game or two???
128 Obafan // Aug 5, 2008 at 21:39
Still Smith gets credit, for what for doing nothing than taking a big fat pay cheque. It is a disgrase that a player of his level can earn so much money. And that other players like Owen have to earn less than before. It is not fair. Get Smith on a lower pay cheque, better get rid of and invest the money in other players and give it to the players who really are valiable like Oba and Owen, so that they sign a new contract.
129 Ryan // Aug 6, 2008 at 8:00
Ian, what we are saying is not that Cisse is not good or anything. But have you ever see him play in EPL last time in Liverpool? He’s just an average player who can’t adapt the leaque. I don’t really sure but he does not comes into those liverpool fans’ mind last time. Prove me wrong if you can.
