Coloccini Deal Drags On And On

The Evening Chronicle is reporting today that Fabricio Coloccini hopes to fly into Newcastle today and join Newcastle United, as we reported earlier today.

Fabricio Coloccini – flying into Newcastle today

The Evening Chronicle is saying there are still some small things to work out before Coloccini finally completes his £10M move from Deportivo La Coruna.

We really hope they can be worked out today, so the lad can sign on the dotted line.

Coloccini is said to be desperate to join his international colleague and friend Jonas Gutierrez on Tyneside, but the deal is certainly taking an inordinate amount of time to be completed, that’s for sure.

Coloccini was still in Spain when he talked to the Evening Chronicle:

“I went into train with the Deportivo players who were left behind to keep up my fitness and pace.”

“There are still things to be discussed with Newcastle, but hopefully I will be there soon for a medical and I will be able to sign for them.”

Quite honestly we have no idea why it takes this long to sign a player.

Yes, these contracts can be complicated these days, but it just shouldn’t take this long.

Let’s hope he signs soon – so we can be off signing other players we still need before the end of this month.

Both Coloccini and Gutierrez have just been named in the Argentina squad for a friendly with Belarus in Minsk on August 20th, but since it is only a friendly, don’t be surprised if Keegan wants both of them to stay on Tyneside.

That’s assuming we do eventually sign Coloccini of course.

Comments welcome.

I’m quite happy to see that Newcastle are targeting this kind of player. Our defensive problems in my opinion have not always been so bad simply because our defense wasn’t any good. Newcastle for many years have failed to defend from the top, and as a team. In the days when players like Ginola and Asprilla played for the toon, our defensive woes were down to too much pressure being put on Shay and the back four. From what I’ve heard, Chris Houton is doing a fantastic job of getting the team to work for each other – defending from the front. Guittierez, for example, is known for his hard-working for the team and more important, his tracking back and defending as much as going forward. Collocini would be a fantastic addition.

All we need then is a central midfielder who can create chances. I think we should consider a swap deal with Everton – Mikel Arteta for Alan Smith + some cash to Everton. Left back for me is not a major issue – Enrique looks decent and with a large part of season’s premiership experience, he will grow and show some good form this year round. Young foriegn players always need a settling down period. Plus N’Zogbia can always drop back if he has to.

Next season looks like this for me:

    ——————— Given ——————-

    Beye —– Collocini ——– Faye —— Enrique

    Guittierez — Butt — Arteta —- N’Zogbia/Duff

    Martins —— Owen/Viduka

Keegan says 3 players but probably wants 4..
In the end though i do get the feeling it may only be 2.. As has already been mentioned on here on numerous occasion we are crying out for a central midfield player who gets beyond the front man..
Yes a play maker who puts his foot on the ball and creates would be wonderful but there arent really that many around. To be honest as much as i hate to say this we have really missed a dyer in the middle who is prepaired to take players on at pace and drive past the front man.

Its not that dyer was ever prolific it was just his pace pulled defenders all over the shop and this left more space for are forwards to work in, it was similar with rob lee not as quick but he was always third man running and would be breaking onto or past the opposition defence.

    Any opinions?

Plus KK has said today 2-3 more to come so that’s Coloccini plus at least one and maybe two.
I’ve been pretty pessimistic on our prospects, but if it turns out to be Coloccini plus two more quality signings that’ll be six in total. Get a few injured players back too, and we might just have a half decent squad.

I still think we are in for Nicky Shorey, if we aren’t then we must be mad. Good player and available. Coloccini, Shorey, Benayoun and Inler. 25 million for the lot and we would be ready to go. Try to get a back up striker before window shuts and we would be flying – other teams are spending this level of money so we should too.

Please people dont start with the random dennis wise attacks, is he such an easy target? Do people on here complaining actually know what his job is? I think his job is recruiting young players. Something that we have done quite well so far. The moaning seems unwarranted

By the way, Ljungberg been released from West Ham. Wonder if he would be worth a 1 year deal? Only 31 and still good when he wants to be. Just didn’t want to play for West Ham – can’t blame him really.

If you look at the spine of the team now you could say 3 out of 4 are world class, or european class anyway, (1)Given (2)Coloccini (3)Owen, potentially Martins. We now need a quality cm to complete the spine. I think Inler would be great, hope we get him. He can dictate games from midfield & defend, we’ve got no one who can do that.

2-3 more signings. 1 is Coloccini, 1 will be a LB (which Keegan has said all along that we need).

That leaves 1.. I wonder if he will bring in a CM or a striker? My guess is a CM. If Smith and Ameobi go, then he might plump for a striker too. If so, we will have bought:

    LB
    CB
    CB
    CM
    CM
    Wing
    Striker

and we really can’t complain about lack of transfer activity…

NO to Ljungberg. He has been CRAP for a couple of years now. He was terrible for West Ham, terrible in the Euros and injured and poor last season at Arsenal.

    No no no.

Coloccini, Benayoun, Inler, Shorey all in for 25million. doubt that very much

    Coloccini – 9.1million
Benayoun – 9 million at least as Rafa wants him
    Inler – 8.5 million
    Shorey – 4 or 5 million

More likely to come to around…31million, which is probably 11million more than we intend of spending

I think as we’ve seen with Hleb etc. that for the time being transfers take a long time. Due to the fact the early stages are better publicised and the deals actually just taking longer.

Shorey would only cost £3m, & £1.5m add ons & Benayoun would cost £6m, Baptista’s agent is saying he’s available for £7m. So those 3 along with Inler could cost around £25m. We could get half of that by selling Milner, Smith & Ameobi.

Smith was called to the training ground this morning and had a 20 minute meeting with KK when he was informed that the club had accepted a bid. He will therefore play no part in tonights game.

Colocinni deal will be confirmed today.

The deal should have been completed already, it was problems at Depor’s end that has slowed it down. Hopefully we’ve been working on other targets during this time. Hopefully when KK says ‘2 or 3 players’ that is including Colo, otherwise just one more addition after the Argentine won’t be enough to provide sufficient confidence for the new season. However, KK is going to try and keep things low key in the media, especially after the Modric saga, so don’t be surprised to see plenty of more activity.

i agree we do need a AM, but i don’t see anything wrong with the formation we used at the end of last season…and with our strikers injured we could easily just slot wingers (milner, zogy, duff, spiderman) in there. And with young guthrie a ready made replacement to barton we shouldnt have TOO much to worry about. as long as we get our signing of course (not much faith in the 3wise men) And am i the only one who doesnt want to be the next chelsea…money is good but too much money can kill a team…4get tyhe indians – keep it english. ; )

shearer#1 i agree. Shorey is cheap and so is Benayoun – Pool are desperate for cash to buy Barry so will let him go – he’s been linked with Roma. Inler has a 5 million buy out so that’s the price. 25 million would get them so sorry Spyro but i’m defending my case!

Shearer Benitez will not let Benayoun go for 6million, what are you smoking?! He has already said he has no plans to let him leave. Tottenham apparently enquired and were told to p*** off!

Shorey for 4 or 5 million is just my opinion.

If Baptista is available for 7million i suggest we jump at the opportunity. He is a class player who was unfortunate at Arsenal.

guys its a longshot but what about Afellay, he will probably be on show tonight and he fits the bill of what we are currently after. Young, versatile (plays AM/RM/LM).

Would take a lot to get him from PSV, 11-12million plus, but he is a player who shined in the Euros when he played but hasn’t been mentioned thus far in terms of transfer speculation. If we were smart we would try and nick him on the sly eh.

    Opinions?

Spyro he is a great player – your estimate is about right. The thing the Prem can offer is big wages, the Dutch league can only pay meagre wages compared to us. I would love to see him here, you never know – i hope Big Willie is right and Smith is missing tonight – if he is then the Everton thing is about right
